A word from Range
Nestled in the heart of the Mission District, Range is the creation of husband and wife team, Phil and Cameron West. Since the summer of 2005 Range has welcomed diners into a warm, inviting space furnished with wood floors, zinc table tops, leather banquettes and art deco elements.

As the seasons change, the food and cocktail programs follow suit. Chef Phil West’s compact menu offers locally grown and sustainably cultivated ingredients with succinct flavors layered into sophisticated fare. Pastry Chef Michelle Polzine’s thoughtfully hand-crafted desserts provide an innovative yet classic finish to the meal. Specialty cocktails reflect the produce market’s bounty and every day a new cocktail is created by our talented bartending staff. Range’s entire front room and full bar are set aside for diners without reservations to have anything from a quick drink or dessert to a fully coursed meal. Continued

  • "3rd and last time at Range. Service was casual and somewhat negligent. The server seemed distracted/disengaged throughout and would leave the dining area for prolonged periods. ex: 45mins for entrees to arrive, despite lack of crowd. No apologies or explanations about delays through the courses. Food was very good(!) but not good enough to expunge the distasteful service."

We celebrated my partners birthday and both of us continue to enjoy the memory of the dinner.From the exquisite nettle soup, beet and kale salad, trout, and the dessert of buckwheat chiffon. The service was impeccable. Warm and knowledgeable. We can't wait to return. This is a restaurant to treat your palate. Enjoy."

I have been coming here for many years, perhaps 2 or 3 times per year for special occasions or to bring friends or family who are visiting from out of town. The staff are lovely, the food is memorably wonderful, and over the years the place seems to have just got better and better."

  • "Snooty hostess, crowded bar. Seated on time, quick arrival of best chicken liver mousse ever, then 45- min wait for next course with no evidence of our server. Finally got very good nettle purée soup and spectacular lamb with complex Harissa based sauce. Entitled thirty-something Tech vibe meshed with Important feel from staff to mar great food. Wouldn't return on a Sat night but would consider for midweek. A 45-minute delay to get main course really does require some intermittent contact wot wait staff and an apology somewhere along the line."

  • "We will definitely return. The food was fresh, innovative and hearty not fancy done up with foam and architecture. We had great cocktails and shared their amazing melt in your mouth ribs. Then we each had a salad. I loved the littlest gems salad with pled paprika sunflower seeds. My husband had the salmon with a smoky sauce and I had chicken with pea tendrils artichokes. So so delicious! Great wines by the glass and a yummy carrot cake dessert. The help was friendly attentive and the place has a friendly neighborhood vibe. Highly highly recommend this place."

  • "We've been to range quite a few times. The drinks are AMAZING and the food is really good... but the service is pretty lackluster. The hostess on our most recent visit was having worst day of her life I have to guess.She did not smile. She did not have a single ounce of energy in her body. She was worse that usual, but not out of the ordinary. Our server was slightly better than the last couple of visits, but still far below what we expect from a restaurant of this caliber. Slow to greet us, slow to take our order, slow to do anything. She did smile though, which is better than we've had in the past. I don't know what is wrong with the employees at range, but an infusion of joy would make the world of a difference."

  • "This restaurant deserves its outstanding reputation, with many main dishes (the harisa lamb entree, the gnocchi, the halibut, the short ribs) really extraordinary, and all the appetizers we tried also really excellent. The service is also excellent, and the ambiance better than most Mission District good-food places.it is nice that the noise level is only moderate (particularly in the long corridor opposite the kitchen with only one row of tables), or perhaps on the high side of moderate; most "happening" restaurants are much louder. This is a great place to spend 3 hours dining, talking and drinking good wine if you have $80 /person to spend."

  • "Dont get me wrong, Range is a good restaurant. Sat in the very back this time and it was loud. So loud that half of the time I could not hear my date. The food was good, but nothing so amazing that we will be rushing back. Service was fine, but not remarkable (but with such a loud venue, it is hard for them to really shine)."

  • "It seems as if Range has slipped. We have enjoyed it for quite a few years. This is a destination restaurant, and after the hassle of driving in circles to finally land a parking spot, one really expects the food to knock your socks off. It used to. Oh, and with all the excellent Pinot Noirs we have in CA, why pick a French one that is soooo light and tasteless. Our main courses were good - the trout and the halibut. However, I would not order either one again."

  • "Range is a nice little place offering a sophisticated dinner menu and fabulous cocktails. There were a few mistakes made on the night we visited: we had to ask for bread although we noticed others received it without asking, and there was some sort of problem with their computer which delayed being able to pay with our credit card by about 20 minutes. But our waitress was sparkling and the liquor helped things go much more smoothly."

  • "we have been to this restaurant before and liked it. this time was a complete disappointment. the service was very slow. we had to remind them to bring our entrees some of the entrees arrived cold and had to be sent back. all of the food was loaded with salt the noise was overwhelming the prices were inappropriately high"

  • "Three of us ate. My wife and I had a salad (fine), some crab rolls ok (underseasoned) and some cod in tea dashi. The dashi was cool (temp), oversalted and didn't evoke tea at all. The cod itself was fine, but nothing special. The try hard (everything sounded good and was well plated, but somehow it's missing the love. Our friend had a lamb dish which he liked. We were early on a Friday and the place wasn't full so I'm not sure why everything was a little off."

  • "wow-this was so incredible from the moment we walked in the door. Great service, food was so unusual- this should get a Michelin star. And the wine- great value and fabulous. We can't wait to go back. had the crab role, lamb , cod and goat cheesecake. Impossible to describe the flavors - we went early 5:30 because we knew it would be quiet then- and it was - we sat near the bar and although the bar was full the noise was comfortable. and there was no intrusive music to overcome."

Well, went back today and service is the number one reason why I would recommend range. They have down how to run an dining establishment.   • "Located in a hopping section of San Francisco's inner Mission district, Range lived up to it's billing. The cocktails were innovative and delicious. I tried the Remedy, a spicy blend of rum, ginger, chili pepper and bitters. The clams appetizer came recommended and it was my favorite course of the night. Crispy croutons and tender clams in a sumptuous broth with greens and boutique bacon. My wife had the short ribs and I had the chicken, both were delicious, but I prefered the richness of the short rib and it paired a little better with the Italian red wine we were drinking. The chocolate tart with earl grey ice cream we had for dessert was rich and generous enough to share. Service was great, all in all a wonderful experience."

  • "This restaurant has got a lot of great attributes! Creative & delicious drinks, excellent food, creative menu, attentive and pleasant service...however, the atmosphere is just a bit off. It needs to be "warmed up", perhaps some partitions/trees to create ambiance & privacy to counteract the noise level...more art?...the back room is quite austere with no special attributes for a restaurant of this caliber."

  • "After waiting to check in, the hostess looked up at me & didn't say a word - no 'hello', no 'how may I help you', nothing. I gave her my reservation info & she said our table was finishing paying their check, so it would be a couple minutes. 20 minutes later she unapologetically took us to our table. Our server was not much better - slow to take orders & simply unfriendly. The food & drinks all took a long time to come out. However, they were good, but not good enough to compensate for the bad service."

The cocktail selection seemed actually to trump the food menu in our view. And while the service is very professional, we felt rushed through our meal despite having explicitly said to the server that we wanted a slower pace. The main course arrived virtually the instant the first course was finished -- not classy."

  • "I have been to Range once a year for the last 4 years and have been impressed every single time. The food is just wonderful. They pair flavors together wonderfully, always putting just a slight twist to the dish. Their dessert is always tasty! We tried the goat cheesecake. My mom who doesn't like cheese tried it loved it! It was perfect with the lemon curd. Light, tart and unique! The service is amazing. We were given just enough space to have uninterrupted sessions of conversation. Our water glasses were filled constantly and plates cleared in a timely manner. When I told our server that we would be having our dishes family style, he and his staff set our table with all the appropriate silverware and sharing plates. So impressive!"

The only problems were the noise level, which is VERY loud and the lighting is really low. A person in the group could barely read the menu."

It was so loud we couldn't have a good conversation, and the person next to me was so close we actually rubbed elbows. They are really uptight about reservations, requiring a credit card to hold a week night reservation - and then they kept calling me to confirm - left no messages - but called multiple times."

  • "Not too elegant, not too casual,very cozy. I think this place shows how the mission district, particularly Valencia Street, is all about. And they cover all three basic yet must-have elements of restaurant, flawless services, tasty dishes (especially the short ribs were so good) and nice wine list. Meanwhile, it is extremely loud inside the dining room so that I had to almost keep shouting for conversation. I would like to repeat coming to Range while I am energetic enough to enjoy 90 minutes' non-stop shouting-listening-eating match."
