Range features a menu of Californian local, sustainable, organic fare served in delectable small plates, & well composed entrees that perfectly contrast flavors. We shared three appetizer plates: local sardines; the fresh daily soup (ours was a carrot compote made with coconut milk); & a house-favorite, glazed duck wings with pickled chillies. Each plate had a perfect balance of tastes: sweet to savory; light or rich textures. We each had an entree: Local halibut & a vegetarian dish of squash & white beans over ancient grains, then shared the homemade apple, white chocolate tart for dessert. The wine list is inexpensive (full bottles for <$100) mix of Californians, Italians & a smattering of others. We hope to be back on the Range soon.

Read great things but did not think the food was out of this world as some other reviewers have implied. Pricey for what you get, including the drinks. My coffee rubbed pork shoulder was a little on the salty side, albeit very tender. Atmosphere was nice, though tables so close that people can eavesdrop or overhear other conversations, so much so that one group had to give into conversation with the lone man sitting next to them. Server was superb and knowledgable.

We had a lovely meal from an outstanding looking menu. The only course that wasn't 100% what we'd hoped was dessert, which didn't seem quite as stellar as in previous visits. Be forewarned, though, that the room is noisy and would be challenging for older diners to have a conversation.

Of all choices along the Valencia corridor, this one is by far one of the best. And if not the most expensive, it's definitely on the top of the price scale too. It would be hard to walk out for less than $120 for two, even with a split salad and dessert, and one drink per person. That said, this really is amazing food. With a constantly updated menus, we've never been disappointed. The fish dishes (two per night!) are especially exceptional, with layers of complex flavors and textures. Their variation on corn cake desserts (gluten free) have been exceptional every time. Service (or maybe the kitchen) is slightly sluggish, but always professional and friendly. Highly recommended for a celebration or splurge.

We hadn't been to Range in quite a while, and had decided to go back. Our take away from Range is the same. The room is much too loud (our ears were ringing afterwards) and the tables are too close to together. As a result, we found ourselves shouting at each other, and hearing the table next to us shouting at each other too. The food is very good, but the ambiance is a deal killer.

The cocktails were quite good, however the food was overdone in all respects - overly salted and cooked. The arugula salad was the only item that tasted fresh and without excessive salt. The desserts we tried were also unexceptional. I was disappointed after having heard so many great things.

We went in with high expectations, and were a bit disappointed. While the food was good, the menu was limited. In truth not much looked good to us. The service was mediocre, he seemed put off that we wouldn't have a higher tab, as we didn't order drinks or an appetizer. We were very disappointed and my wife commented as we left that we wouldn't be returning. However we did have two other fabulous meals while in San Francisco.

My husband and I were first time diners at Range. When we arrived, we waited about 10 minutes for our table. There were two seats available at the bar so we ordered a drink. The bar tender was a fun, friendly and efficient. When we were seated, our table was in the corner of the dining room. The dining room was packed and the table felt quite crowded. It was loud. We were served right away. Our food was delicious. We choose two different salads for a starter and for the entree we both had the vegetarian option. The food was absolutely delicious. Fresh and bursting with flavor - all served at the perfect temperature. Our server recommended a wine to go with our food - and her recommendation was fabulous.

We took a friend here for a group birthday dinner and ordered practically the whole menu for family style sharing. The craft drinks are terrific and if you want to skip the booze they will make you crafted non-alcoholic treats to drink as well. For starters, the purée of cannellini bean soup was awesome and the egg noodle pasta with manila clams is to die for. Even friends that don't like clams were scraping the plate. Our favorite entree was the poached flounder. Our waitress recommended the rubbed pork shoulder but I thought it was a bit dry. We finished off with a two nice plates of cheese and the chocolate peanut butter mousse cake which was perfectly dense and rich.

The food was fine, but expected more for the price and the hype. The best part of the meal was the bread. Damn, that bread was good! Other than that, everything tasted great, but was not outstanding. I also got charged $100 dollars more than the actual bill. Thankfully I was paying attention and had them correct it. One more glass of wine and I might not have caught that one!

Every dish was delicious. Great pacing, we were there for 1.5 hours but never felt like we were waiting for anything. The drinks are good, but a little expensive. I think we lucked out and got a good table. Our corner table was far away from everyone else. Some of the side 2-person tables looked like they may be a little too close together for comfort. For a SF restaurant with great reviews, it was surprisingly intimate and not packed. This is a huge plus. The service felt very personal. They aren't taking on more work/tables than they can handle.

Range is one of our favorite restaurants in SF. Been going for special occasions for a long time. Last week was the first time it felt a little less than. The menu used to change - it seemed to be the same as it was when we were there a few months back, main courses did. The desserts used to be outstanding. They really were not this time. The starter salads were a little weird; something with a kind of tasteless apple was odd. It's hard to not feel spoilt in this city, we are lucky, even spoilt, to complain! The waiter was great. But the food just seemed more mediocre this time for such a great place. Sorry, Range. We'll try again, but....bit underwhelmed this time.

My wife and I ate here for a special evening out. I guess I just missed the boat on this place....despite many positive reviews I'd read online, neither one of us were very impressed. We both thought everything (appetizers, main courses, desserts) were overpriced by at least 30-40% given the food quality, ambiance, decor, service and neighborhood. My steak arrived barely lukewarm and was a small portion (as were all our portions, despite the prices). Service was only "OK"....our waiter tended to be rather scarce. All in all, it's not a bad restaurant, but all things considered, there are plenty of better options in SF, especially for the prices Range is charging.

Restaurant was good but imagine my shock when I got my parking tab in as NEIGHBORHOOD at 14.75 for 2 1/2 hrs. Limits my probability of a return: 3 block walk , $15 parking, no valet, and too noisy. Michelin Star? ambience? etc. how do you spell overrated? Restaurant was stuffy and needed a drafty door opened to cool it down. No salads to speak of.

The food was excellent and unique with great flavor, everything we had was delicious, but our bill was $350.00 for 4 of us. The back room was a bit crowded and stuffy with low ceilings-I felt a little claustrophobic but they did have the back door open which helped. It seems they did turn on some air because it seemed fresher and not so stuffy after a while. Now granted, we did order 3 apps, 2 bottles of wine, 3 entrees plus another app as an entrée, plus 3 desserts, but it still seemed expensive to me. Perhaps that's the SanFransisco way??? The service was excellent-couldn't have been better. Very attentive and timely. The front entry is inviting, so if you can sit there, I would suggest it.

The appetizer of halibut had two microscopic shreds of halibut in a tasteless watery liquid. My date had the beef entree that tasted like nothing more than mouth fils of salt after 5 glasses of water he asked for something else of which they brought out chicken. My entree of coffee rubbed pork also tastes of nothing but salt. During the course of the evening of you set your fork down for a moment one of the staff was trying to wisk away your plate even though clearly you were still eating. They rushed you the entire time. Poorly trained staff, cooks that shouldn't be allowed to prepare food for even the homeless people if you like any of the above chart erotica of a resturant then go to range otherwise steer clear very clear.
