A word from Range
Nestled in the heart of the Mission District, Range is the creation of husband and wife team, Phil and Cameron West. Since the summer of 2005 Range has welcomed diners into a warm, inviting space furnished with wood floors, zinc table tops, leather banquettes and art deco elements.

As the seasons change, the food and cocktail programs follow suit. Chef Phil West’s compact menu offers locally grown and sustainably cultivated ingredients with succinct flavors layered into sophisticated fare. Pastry Chef Michelle Polzine’s thoughtfully hand-crafted desserts provide an innovative yet classic finish to the meal. Specialty cocktails reflect the produce market’s bounty and every day a new cocktail is created by our talented bartending staff. Range’s entire front room and full bar are set aside for diners without reservations to have anything from a quick drink or dessert to a fully coursed meal. Continued

  • "Good, but not spectacular. Service was absentminded. We had to ask for our drinks and for bread twice before either arrived. The server unapologetically spilled part of my husband's drink. Cucumber nectarine slaw was ok. Mostly cabbage, it was a salty, far less creative dish than I had hoped for. Same for the bean salad my husband had. The entrees were solid, but not better than what I make at home. The pork shoulder was tasty, but fatty. The accompanying creamed hominy was mush and the collards tasted old and overcooked. I look to restaurant meals to bring out the best in their ingredients. This meal, although rich, highlighted the mundane. Neither my husband nor I remember his entree. The strawberry dessert wasn't worth the calories."

  • "When Range first opened it was by far my favorite place. Amazing food with a relaxed atmosphere and reasonable prices. Sadly, the last couple of visits, the food hasn't been nearly as good. It's still fine, but not the level it was a while back. This last visit, everything was very oversalted. I like salt, but the leak soup (for example) tasted like flavored salt water. They just need a little more care in their food, and they can get back to where they used to be. Right now, I can't recommend them."

  • "Really nice scene. A great place to show our Williamsburg Brooklyn dopplegangers the Mission vibe as we did that night. Starters were excellent and well-conceived. However...my main, a confit duck leg was dry and the 'granola' topping for the farro bed on which the confit sat did not work (i.e., maybe it really was granola). Otherwise, recommended for a great little dinner."

  • "I came here with my partner to celebrate his birthday. It was a special occasion and we haven't been disappointed. The food was very skilfully made. These type of restaurants tend to overdo (foam, sauces, emulsions etc.), while Range was quite simple yet very tasty. I would definitely recommend."

  • "Would I recommend Range to a friend? Well, sort of, yes. I'm hoping the entrees were just a QC issue, and perhaps we were there on a bad night. We really wanted to LOVE this place, we really did. Great ambience, great service…..a fun neighborhood place to be, for sure. Our Trout Appetizer was fabulous, and we were excited for what was to follow. Sadly, Salt and luke warm food, at best. We had the salmon & the steak. Wouldn't order either again. Fit for foodies? Maybe, on a good night."

  • "We really enjoyed Range. Their dishes were creative yet approachable. They use ingredients in unusual and surprising ways, like a savory granola made with rye, cherries and hazelnuts as a garnish for duck breast. Our dessert was a peach cobbler that was refreshingly not-sweet. We loved it, but it’s a pretty daring thing to serve to people used to cloying American desserts. This was one of the better meals we’ve had this year, and I’m eager to return."

  • "We had 6 for dinner which is a pretty large group for this space, but it was excellent. The food here is amazing -- not big portions but just as it should be. Great beer selections and really tasty entrees, "foodie" yet not pretentious. It's a little noisy here but that's what we wanted."

  • "We had heard about Range, but hadn't managed to get a reservation. However, we needed an early dinner before a show at the Marsh, so succeeded in seating a party of five at 6PM. The decor is understated but attractive, the service friendly but in obtrusive. Great cocktail menu. All the food was PERFECT! I had an escarole soup, and my husband had a wonder cabbage, cucumber, nectarine, pumpkin seed, and vinaigrette slaw that was out of this world. All the main dishes slammed it - steak, salmon, and halibut. Divine chocolate dessert. Noise level rose at the end of the meal, but conversation was still doable. Could use a tad more acoustical dampening. We like to talk."

  • "Love the ambiance at Range: low key but hip without the overdone minimalism. Service was attentive without being overbearing. But the food was a little hit or miss. The escarole soup was flavorful, but the nectarines and pistachios tasted odd in contrast. Maybe corn or something a little less sugary? The baked gnocchi as actually a giant rectangle; not the small, bite-size pieces I was expecting. the vegetables on top were nice, but heads up that the broth is really, really strong and salty. It overpowered most everything on the plate. Would have liked a second vegetarian entree option, but at least there was one!"

  • "We returned to Range after having a monumentally disappointing meal there a few months ago. They regained all of that lost ground and then some. The service, which had been dismal, was perfect. The food reminded me of why San Francisco is such a great city for food. Sand dabs -- which have been absent from most menus of late, were back -- and perfect.   • "I had never been to Range but wanted to take my friend to a special place to celebrate his birthday and I wanted it to be in the Valencia Corridor for the energy. This was a great experience. The place looked great, very well designed and well-laid out. The serve was exceptional and our server couldn't have been more pleasant and helpful. The food and wine were outstanding and it was one of the best evenings out in SF either of us had had in a while. And in SF, that's saying something."

The wine, which we selected as the waiter appeared unfamiliar with the selections, was good. However, given the price we paid for dinner, the apparent disarray of the staff, the unclean bathroom, unyielding noise level and surfeit of establishments in the area, I would not recommend this restaurant."

  • "Went for an expectedly nice dinner with out of town friends. My friends said the Loin and salmon were good. But the 2 of us that had the Duck, were very dissapointed. The description listed nuts as a garnish, but actually it was almost 1/3 of the meal. Argh... The waiter said it would be lean meat, and it was actually extremely fatty. Also, at the end we were overcharged. They corrected the bill right away, but it just left an additionally bad taste. With all the amazing restaurants in SF I won't be back for a long time; and don't think I would miss out if I never go back. "

  • "We had a wonderful dinner here celebrating my partner's 30th bday. I ordered the Bee's Knees (delicious) and my partner enjoyed the Barbarella. For an appetizer we shared the spring vegetable salad w/ lolla rosa lettuces, fresh goat cheese, & champagne vinaigrette. This was a light & refreshing salad- perfect way to start a meal. For dinner I ordered the oregon king salmon (wild!) w/ cilantro rice noodles, squid, pickled vegetables, aioli & chili lime vinaigrette and my partner ordered the strip loin roast w/ hasselback potatoes, lacinato kale, pecorino & rye breadcrumbs. We both finished our dinners so I'd say that's a sign of how tasty they were. We don't live in San Fran but it's on our list to return to during our next visit!"

We maybe should have ordered a few more appetizers than one per person. My only complaint is they could have provided a bit more bread. otherwise great spot to try."

  • "Range was the perfect choice for dinner with a friend whom I hadn't seen in far too long. We chose to sit in the middle section instead of the fuller back section so we could talk and be boisterous. Our server was delightful and her wine recommendations were great. Starting with margaritas (excellent tequila list) worked well. The slaw and the trout were perfect starters. We both had the steak because I knew it would be great. It's nice to know that Range is still the ultimate destination for a great dinner with flawless service and excellent food. Oh and don't miss the goat cheesecake - it's beyond good."

  • "This was a belated anniversary dinner with my wife that did not disappoint. We went there early so that the restaurant would be less noisy and give us a chance to talk. The service was extremely professional yet still friendly and the waiter made great recommendations for both of us. I like the pared down menu with only a few choices, but still something in every category. The two fish dishes that we had were outstanding and not too large. The cucumber salad was refreshing and crisp. The escarole soup - a bright green bowl with some goat cheese hidden inside - was light and pleasant. A memorable evening closed with a luscious panna cotta."

  • "On a recent Monday 2 of us dined at Range. Our table was ready when we arrived, although the hostess was luke warm when she noticed our less-than-Valencia-hip clothing. The dining room is cozy if not a bit cramped. We had the trout starter, which was lovely. I had the halibut with spring peas: genius and flawless cooking, perfect textures and flavors. However, my portion was so small that I left the restaurant feeling hungry. My date had the loin roast and he loved it. The wine list is great. We chose a Barbera from Piedmont, and it was lovely. Our server, like the hostess, was just shy of warm, and perhaps a bit flustered. Overall, it was a nice experience, but given the cramped dining and cool-ish service I probably will not return."

  • "Range has always been an excellent restaurant. But a change in chef and dessert chef has it going downhill some. Parking in the area has gotten very bad the last year of so to the point that they recommend you don't drive yourself there. It needs to attend more to food quality."
