Diner Reviews
  • "Nothing interesting about this restaurant. The food was ok, not bad, but there are so many other great places to go. The only highlights were the really good bread basket (for $8) and the salmon tartare appetizer. The roasted bone marrow was a generous serving. Avoid the fried oysters since they are so bland you could be eating cardboard. The pizza was limp and flavorless. Top that off with 2 servers bickering with each other the whole time, the ambience wasn't great either."

  • "Food was good but not great. Quite expensive for the quality. Service was good but noise level when busy would be high."

  • "The service was great, spectacular wine list, but the food was lukewarm. Cornbread and pork rinds are a must try and great dinner accompaniment!!"

  • "We went for lunch and an excellent time. Food and drinks were all wonderful and the service was excellent. Ask for the server who has a little sister that also works as a server. She was splendid."

  • "The staff were great but the foods was only adequate. I also didn't like the location in a mall."

  • "3rd time dining at Range since january, first time awesome, second time awesome, this time most of the nine kitchens were dark, restaruant was 1/3 full, service was spotty, probably because so many of the kitchens were closed; menu was 1 page, nothing to excite you, no chocolate offerings for dessert, etc. sommelier had an know it all attitude, tried telling me that the wine list was basically retail. Now the list is fairly priced, but it's not retail. My prediction, this place is hemoraging money and will be closed by Jan. 31, 2015."

  • "At first blush the menu seems somewhat pedestrian for such a mod place, but the dishes were beautiful and the flavors complex and rich."

  • "Excellent dinner. Knowledgeable waiters. Beautiful plating and food design."

  • "I love the food but the service needs help!!! The food itself can't carry the restaurant - it must go hand in hand with service. The sommelier should be a little less arrogant regardless of his knowledge. I would not go back because of the service alone. Also, the restaurant is quite noisy, not in a good way. I have to say though, the food was fantastic!"

  • "We took friends to Sunday brunch, and we were all pleased with the food and ambience, despite crazy loud construction noise from the adjacent Embassy Suites. The staff was unfailingly friendly, and the brussels sprouts were so good we considered them our dessert. We shared an asparagus, pecorino and prosciutto pizza: thin, crispy crust topped with a delicious mixture of toppings. Our chicken salad sandwiches were excellent, but nothing special."

  • "Had to wait 40 minutes, with reservation, for a table with a view of the H&M Kids storefront. Food was very good, but waitstaff was very disorganized. Second time visiting Range, maybe last?"

  • "I took my friend to celebrate her new job and I was really hoping for a much better experience. I had a reservation and still waited a little over 30 minutes for our table, which was nicely salvaged by the manager when she gave us champagne. However, we then ordered the skirt steak and half-way through eating it noticed the hidden pieces of ham mixed with the greens that the steak sat on. We are allergic and there was no pork description on your menu and the server failed to mention it when we asked about the dish. Sure, we got new steaks, but dinner had already been ruined and the server never did anything to alleviate the situation. The food is very good, brussel sprouts, corn, even the steak was good once they got it right!"

  • "My guest and I returned to this restaurant after a year or so. We were a little disappointed to find that the menu on July 19, 2014 was no longer the "tapas"-style, smaller portions, to share, which would have allowed for us to sample a wider variety of the Voltaggio-inspired cuisine. Mind-you, the food was still delicious. The heirloom tomato salad and scallops were wonderful. The hangar steak, per dining partner, was the best ever. The salmon tartare was good but not memorable. The wine list - Sauvignon Blanc selection - was fabulous. Desserts - custard with blackberry gelato was very good and ice cream sandwiches were difficult to eat, and did not seem as enjoyed by other guest. Oddly enough, the coffee was served relatively cold."

  • "It is not worth the money. It is over the top trendy the second you walk in you can tell that they are trying too hard. You sit down and open the menu and nothing looks good. The portion sizes for entrees are not consistent, one person could get the lamb and have triple the food as the person who ordered the pork. They don't have healthy options. Even their brussels sprouts are fried. The place is a joke. The waiter was fine enough but the "wine specialist" was completely rude to my mother. My mom is one of the most polite, friendly people on earth which makes the rudeness even more ridiculous. We could have saved 200+ dollars and have gone to Petes Pizza, which is down the road, and had a much better dinner."

  • "Overpriced, unpleasant ambiance for a couple, noisy. Food was ok but menu choices weren't inspiring; the feeling was 'well I guess I'll get this because I certainly don't want that'. And that's not something that happens to me much. Was supposed to be nice evening out without the kids. Instead, it was a lingering feeling that we should have walked out the door while we could."

  • "Great food, good service, awesome cocktails. It would have been bit better if our server had provided more information on the food. It was my husband's first time at Range and I was hoping that he would get the same spiel I got the first time I was there (explanation of the restaurant's concept and menu, etc). Overall, the service was good. Thanks for the great food and cocktails! We'll be back."

  • "This restaurant may have seen better days. The staff are not well-informed about the menu and there appears to be a communication problem with the kitchen, at least when we dined. The food sounds better on the menu than it tastes."

  • "We were expecting high quality given that it is a Brian Voltaggio restaurant. Boy! Were we shocked. We got warm white wine, cold fried oysters! My husbands pork dish was not hot. Our server Remy was lovely, but the whole food experience left us disappointed. Too bad. We are foodies and we expected so much more."

  • "Hit Volt twice & thankful this place is closer. (1st time we went to Volt it was amazing, 2nd time not worth the price or drive). Very modern space. Light and simplistic, but the details of the decor show class and thought. Went with the Goat Cheese Ravioli ($21 - braised pork & lamb ragu, smoked pecorino romano). Ragu was hearty; goat cheese gave a light/sour note to offset richness. Crusty bread a nice touch. Short Rib hash ($18 - soft eggs, beef, red onion, fingerling potatoes); another flavor star that was savory but not heavy. We did, however, add on the skillet of corn bread ($6 - chive butter & bacon marmalade). You need to 2 courses or a side unless you are going with the omelets or burgers. Servers and staff were great."

  • "I liked it better when it was small plates. It is now a regular menu."

  • "Had the pizza for starters. It was fine, but not great. Then had the Halibut with gnochietti. It was okay, the pasta was kind of heavy. My companion had the langoustines. Didn't seem to like it at all. We skipped dessert because of the annoying menu. You are supposed to pick individual candies at $3 a piece. Who wants to do that? We thought it was ill-conceived. It was a birthday dinner that fell flat. Will not ever go back."

  • "This was our first time at Range and I am so happy we chose it. Great food and service. Definitely surprised that the presentation was so meticulous and the entrees were unique in their design. I will be returning to try a few other things I saw on the menu."
    Dined on 7/6/2014
  • "We ordered the pork rinds, which were delicious. For our meal we both ordered the lamb shank with corn on the cob, mashed potatoes, and fried brussel sprouts. The trio went well together and we ate long after we should have stopped. We finished with the lemon dessert which was a great ending to a heavier dinner and hot day. I must say, while the food was delicious and service impeccable, I have been to Volt and Ink which are still among my favorites. I was hoping for more, but in comparison to those to delectable adventures I left Range wanting more. Don't get me wrong- I really can't say anything negative... it just didn't land among my Voltaggio favorites."

  • "The food was exactly what we expected-outstanding. The baker's basket with bacon jam, pepper jelly, and maple butter is definitely worth getting. I had the duo of pork and my partner had the scallops we shared everything potatoes and Brussels sprouts. The Brussels added fried onions and were crisp and flavorful. Everything potatoes left everything to be desired-so bland. The pork was tender and delicious. What really bummed us out was the unenthusiastic service. Our server was pleasant, but didn't explain a thing about the menu or restaurant concept, didn't make any suggestions on the menu or wine list. It really took away from the experience that we had to look up the restaurant online to find out what specialties were recommended."

  • "Range was much better, more fun and more worthy of the very high prices, when it was a small plates restaurant. The food is still good, but now it's just another place with fancy food and inflated prices. Sharing lots of small plates was our main reason for eating at Range--without that interesting social aspect, it's just not worth the huge check."

  • "We made a reservation for the 4th of July -- it was easy to get in. Since it wasn't crowded, the service was great, as was the food. We particularly liked the cornbread, roasted oysters, beet salad and the skirt steak with tomato grits. The scallops with coffee and popcorn foam worked! They were perfectly cooked and the coffee flavor was not strong, it just gave the dish some earthiness."

  • "Terrific food and very interesting cocktails...hard to choose what to order! We thoroughly enjoyed the evening! Servers were wonderful too."

  • "The food was delicious & our server was fantastic. She was enthusiastic and very attentive! Would definitely return! Too bad they don't validate parking though."

  • "Once again, Range succeeds in providing all the ingredients of a memorable meal. If there are two or more of you dining and you like bread: Get the mixed basket of breads and spreads -- hard to stop eating! The scallops were excellent, cooked perfectly and plated with a soft foam and accompaniments on the plate -- delicious. Recently, I or my party have had the pizzas which are some of the best in DC."

  • "Nothing spectacular comes to mind except the prices. Decent menu but nothing outstanding. Open kitchen was entertaining to watch. Prices for what was served on the other hand were more than a bit steep."
    Dined on 7/2/2014
  • "Everything on the menu looked great, and it was hard to choose one thing. We relied a lot on recommendations from our server, who was knowledgeable about the menu. We followed his recommendations and were really pleased with his suggestions. Ended up having a fantastic dinner, and look forward to returning. The question for next time is whether to order the same items again, or try something new..."

  • "We had a great visit to Range. The food was superb and we enjoyed the unobstrusive, but attentive, service. It was a wonderful splurge. The mall setting is a little strange, but it is a beautiful mall (newly renovated) and the view within is interesting. We had a wonderful time and hope to visit again soon!"

  • "Absolutely delicious birthday dinner with small group of friends. The cocktails were fabulous, food was spectacular, and dessert choices so interesting including bites of different chocolates and sweets. The only (minor) detraction was the mall location - I ate my meal facing a neon sign of H&M clothing store."

  • "I really was looking forward to dining at The Range. However, though the food was good, the experience did not match dining at the Volt. First, the Range is in a shopping mall. The view of people coming and going up and down the escalator is not very exciting. Second, the food selections were minimal for lunch, and not as interesting. Plus, the portions were small. My friend and I both had the ravioli stuffed with goat cheese. The pasta was chewy. The lamb and pork sauce was flavorful. The whole dish was small, with no sides, and pricey. Third, bread was an extra price. There are lots of other choices that provide better food, service and ambiance. The restaurant is trading on the chef's reputation at The Volt--there is no comparison."

  • "They have gone out of the way to make the food and atmosphere different and timely. They succeed in making it a fun place. Focus on Domain beverages a bit too pricey. Service is well meaning but novice. Hope they ripen."

  • "This was our first time at Range. We had heard about Voltaggio's cooking and were eager to try it. All of the food was good and looked beautiful on the plate, but some mixtures of flavors didn't work. Coffee coating on scallops? Why put such a strong flavor on something that is already tasty? More generally, the best dishes were the ones that let natural flavors shine through. This restaurant could use a tasting menu, or an early bird special, or some small plates, so that diners can try out more offerings."
    Dined on 6/28/2014
  • "I heard good things about the restaurant and the chef's reputation with Voltin Frederick precedes his new restaurants. I had high expectations. Food was flavorful, no doubt but prices were extremely on the high end. Most entrees were above $30 and the limited offerings were not really worth coming back unless I want to spend $$$. The sofa type seats were not comfortable and noise level was high once the restaurant got crowded. There were 2 specials, which were both meat entrees but our waitress did not provide enough info that is think that spending $69 and $99 for these entrees were worth the price. Our waitress was very friendly, however, she was not attentive. There were many men and women in suits but their purpose was a mystery."

  • "sorry, but service was slow, food was lukewarm at best, it was cold, dark and noisy. Liked the old menu much better."
    Dined on 6/27/2014
  • "This is my third visit and I was dissapointed. The menu had no changes. Last time there was a lobster salad that I was looking forward to. And it was very noicy at 1 in the afternoon. Prices were high for what we were getting. I had a beet salad which was basically beats -no greens,"

  • "Our lunch was to be a birthday celebration - Range was a poor choice. Very limited menu - we wondered why they bother to open at lunch. Our lamb burgers were not prepared as we had requested - had to send them back. Won't be returning to Range."
