RangeGreat new spotI know it's not brand new, but it was new to me. The wide variety on the menu typically spells disaster but with 9 kitchens dedicated to one section each the food was great. There are some standard fares there like steak, but we opted for some of the slightly different items. They were all great (though not all to my personal taste). The wait staff was attentive without being pushy. ll while being very helpful. The Soms (there are actually 2) are fantastic, especially with such an expansive wine list, and will really narrow down your choices to whatever you are in the mood for or just help you pair with your meal. I highly recommend giving this place a try.5/15/2013 12:00:00 AMRange: Pricey & SaltyWe are not opposed to spending money to eat out. But knowing how talented Chef Bryan Voltaggio is (we're huge Volt fans) we were sadly disappointed that the food was very salty. I've had burgers at BGR that were better than the $45 steak. The restaurant is very pretty and the service is outstanding, but for the price, the food just isn't worth it. Disappointed.5/15/2013 12:00:00 AMVery goodThe food was great. Our sever was a bit distracted throughout the meal. We got there early and the staff was still I there meeting. The punch was a great way to start off the evening. Great prices on the wine list. Pass on the broccoli don't miss the bread sampler , mushrooms, salted Carmel ice cream. I will be back Easy to get to easy to park.5/13/2013 12:00:00 AMBV does it right!Great concept and menu! Staff is terrific and helpful. Definitely worth multiple visits!5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMExtremely creative preparationsExtremely creative preparations and presentations. Everything we ordered was very good to truly excellent. Service and advice as to what and how to order were outstanding. We will be back soon!5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMInteresting and DeliciousVery fun dining out experience. The house cured meats are delicious. Very interesting menu items. We ordered about 6 things and definitely hit or miss in my opinion. Depends on your taste. Some dishes were outstanding, others I could go without. Meat pizza, kimchi linguini, beef heart, octopus delicious. Seaweed foccacia, brussel sprouts not so good (sprouts were very very greasy).5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMFoodThis another very good small plates establishment. One is expected to order several items to share with fellow dinners at your table. You will fill up before you leave. The skillet cornbread is a must. Ask for more butter and perhaps honey.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMFantastic service. Was a pleasureFantastic service. Was a pleasure to get a tour of the kitchen as well as meet the chef. Service was prompt, informative, and attentive.5/8/2013 12:00:00 AMexcellent food and serviceOne of the best dining experiences I have had in Washington in a long time. The menu is long and complex but the waiter was well trained and explained everything. We ordered a bit less than recommended by the waiter and still felt we had over-ordered, but every dish was delicious. The shared plates and multiple kitchen concept could be a real disaster if the service were not perfectly timed, as it was for our meal. The appropriate dishes came together and there was enough time in between to savor the dishes, The bread basket and spreads were a great treat. The grilled octopus was amazing, as were the mushrooms. Some of the small plates (like pastas) are not so small. A very good value for the quality of food and service.5/8/2013 12:00:00 AMAmbianceWe had a wonderful evening! The food was amazing - we started with the cheese board, jalepeno and cheddar biscuits (amazing), cornbread - moved into the ham, then had a couple of lobster dishes. The brussel sprouts were delicious!
The wine list was extensive; it was nice to see many options for bottles as inexpensively priced at $16, upwards to $5,000!
Our server was perfect and the other staff that assisted with food delivery, from the 9 different kitchen areas, were very knowledgeable and attentive.
The hostess was not the most friendly when I called with questions about parking/location from the metro. Outside of that, it was a perfect experience and I have recommended Range to everyone!5/7/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food, great service,Great food, great service, can't wait to go back. Only thing that was off putting was call from the hostess that morning. She seemed to be suggesting that if I hadn't called back they would have cancelled my reservation. That is crazy. What if I hadn't heard the message? Her story, they had a table assigned, blah, blah, blah seemed made up. I have never been a no show for a reservation and using Open Table should confirm for the restaurant that this is legit. They need to rethink the policy or retrain the hostess.5/6/2013 12:00:00 AMNot just for carnivoresYou MUST get the brussel sprouts! It's easy to create a wonderful vegetarian meal here.5/5/2013 12:00:00 AMSpecial Occasion Foodie SpotRange was my choice for an anniversary dinner, as we had been to Volt earlier in the year for a birthday. Food was outstanding here and our server accurately rated the menu. The only drawback was that she was overwhelmed. While she responded well to my first bit of feedback, it happened again and this time another waitperson came to our rescue. My sense was that they had given her too many tables. I would definitely give this place another chance regarding the service. By the way, it was cheaper than Volt, but still a special occasion meal.5/5/2013 12:00:00 AMAwesome experienceLove the "tapas" concept and that you have the option to order a full meal if you like.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMRangeOur meal was excellent and every course was wonderfuly prepared.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMWell worth tryingThe food at Range is outstanding. The wine selection is outstanding. The idea at Range is to share dishes and order about 3/person. Our server also told us that she would control the flow of food. This was a bad idea, and when we return we will order only a few dishes at a time, and we will control the flow since food came in an inappropriate sequence, with all the larger dishes at the end. By the time we got to the end we had eaten enough so if we had ordered a few dishes at a time we might not have gotten so many larger dishes. Moreover, food came at a very fast rate, with 4 large dishes at once. For the future, we will order a few dishes at a time and mix dish sizes. And then, order more if wanted.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat restaurant. I dine thereGreat restaurant. I dine there often and have never been disappointed!5/3/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat spot!Everything was really good. Really liked the lamb dish and grilled octopus. Brian Voltaggio was actually behind the stove which is always nice to see going to places like this. Go with people who like to share and request a table in the front by the window. The back dining room is a little stuffy.5/3/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat experienceThe food is outstanding, just what we expected from Voltaggio. The tuna and steak were "melt in your mouth" delicious. The fish and veggies were fresh and high quality. And the dishes were creative. Don't miss the fried brussel sprouts. With so much else on the menu, skip the pizzas.
The concept of the small(er) plates to share that come out as they are ready keep the waiters hopping. The busy noisy atmosphere was offputting at first, but everyone was having so much fun, that we got into it. It was a little different restauarant esxperience. You can sit in the quieter back room, but I recommend sitting in front for your first time.5/2/2013 12:00:00 AMService was excellent. AllService was excellent. All the plates we ordered were delicious. The only thing I wouldn't order again is the broccoli. It was rather bland.5/2/2013 12:00:00 AMgreatBeen there several times. Love it! Only down side is that there is too much noise.5/2/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent!Have been twice for lunch and enjoyed my meal both times. The menu us very large, offering something for everyone and every taste. Servers are knowledgeable and helpful. I look forward to returning to try more things!5/2/2013 12:00:00 AMDefinitely should try it !!!The service is outstanding -answered any and all questions regarding drinks and food. Great guide and not pushy or condecending. Refreshing! You do need someone to decipher as the menus are overwhelming.
Great cocktails. We were advised the bread basket was too much for two so we passed.
The cheese tasting was outstanding. The ham was good, if very tame. All dishes are beautifully appointed.
The lobster mac was a disappointing mush and the boutain of seafood was an odd consistency.
The lamb shank (and I am not much for lamb or meat in general) was fantastic! So were the brussels sprouts (not usually a fan but these would turn you into a devotee) and the mushrooms.
A great meal. Looking foward to going back and experimenting5/1/2013 12:00:00 AMmy 8th visit and always great!my 8th visit and always great! I've impressed friends and coworkers coming to range...4/30/2013 12:00:00 AMRange covers the full "range"Range covers the full "range" of Bryan Voltaggio's many talents as a chef. The menu must be studied before one can truly appreciate what this top level restaurant has to offer. The pasta's are incredible, especially the lobster mac and cheese. This is not a place to skip veggies. The brussel sprouts, which I normally wouldn't avoid like green eggs and ham, were close to the highlight of the meal. Do not skip dessert. Not only are there may delicious options, but they have a candy store menu with two dozen options, all homemade. I highly recommend this to all of my foodie friends out there. This is a required spot to keep your foodie ID card.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMThe service was very attentiveThe service was very attentive and we really enjoyed our waitress, Carolina. She had great recommendations based on what kind of food we liked and the rest of the staff was great as well! We sat at the counter in front of the chicken and fish station and really enjoyed this option. The chefs were fun to watch and even took the time to answer a question we had about their prep despite being really busy. It's clear that they are very attentive to the details of each dish. The food did not disappoint! We had the kale ceasar to start and also ordered the chicken, grilled octopus, cauliflower and broccoli rabe. The broccoli rabe was a little bland but everything else was amazing! We will be definitely be back soon!4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMFood is amazing. ServiceFood is amazing. Service is only ok. Sit at the bar for better service.4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMFinally a restaurant thatFinally a restaurant that has lived up to its hype. Food was excellent, innovative, and well presented. The servers did an excellent job explaining the restaurant's concept as well as each dish. Jalapeño biscuits were to die for. Although they have an extensive and impressive wine list, there needs to be a better selection of wine by the glass. Will return, if we can get reservations!4/26/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent food High priced,Excellent food High priced, but worth it. Great atmosphere. Dishes are very creative. Excellent waiter and excellent service.tell those driving that valet is on Military.4/25/2013 12:00:00 AMThis is a great place withThis is a great place with excellent food ,interesting and well executed cocktails and good wine list. The noise level may be a little bit too much that is why I am rating it very good and not outstanding4/24/2013 12:00:00 AMBacon marmelade!Went to Range with my husband for a special occasion...we were seated in the noisy front room, where we had to raise our voices to speak. Next time I will request a back room table. Food was fabulous as was the service...do not miss the bread basket: as an appetizer it is wonderful, with 5 different spreads for 5 different breads...bacon marmalade on cheddar jalopeno biscuit, anyone? We had the lamb tasting dinner and shared it, with a variety of sides, most noteworthy the roasted cauliflower with za'atar. Definitely make room for dessert; the house made chocolates and the Meyer lemon tart were divine. Cannot wait to return. Loved our serverTim, who is also working in the kitchen so he really knows the dishes well.4/24/2013 12:00:00 AMRange more than meets high expectatWe decided on a late lunch, instead of waiting for weeks to get in for dinner. The menu (don't know if it's the same as for dinner) is very creative and everything we tried was spectacular. I know it sounds silly to rave about a bread basket, but this basket (which comes with different spreads) is fabulous..To me, the other outstanding dish was pasta...but the salads, a main course of chicken and the desserts were all very special. Since we arrived at 1:45 and didn't clear out for 2 hours (!), the dining room went from fairly full to mostly empty. I fear that the fairly full noise level is more than the moderate rating I provided. Service?? We started with one waiter who was only fair and were passed on to another who was much better.4/23/2013 12:00:00 AMGot too noisy around 8 PMGot too noisy around 8 PM no carpets, very cavernous space. Limited whiskey choices, ie no Canadian Club or Crowne Royal which some in my party wanted4/22/2013 12:00:00 AMAnother hit for this young chefWe opted to dine at the bar. The restaurant has a very contemporary feel to it. The food is superb, we tried the Lamb Shank (absolutely succulent), the kale caesar salad, and the Bone marrow (my husband love the bone marrow so much , he ordered 1 to go). The menu is very diverse. The pizzas looked fabulous, although we did not try them. For dessert, go for the lemon custard , very tangy and flavorful. With the all the windows at this restaurant, it doesn't feel like a hotel atrium (even though it is located inside , overlooking an atrium). We can't wait to go back.4/21/2013 12:00:00 AMWhat a Great Experience!!We had the pleasure of spending a friend's birthday at Range for brunch. I was wowed. From the amazing ricotta ravioli bathed in a rich ragu to the earthy beet and goat cheese salad, every bite was delicious. The amazing ingredients are treated with care and the preparations highlight them rather than drown them out. I don't even like pizza but I would go there specifically for another bite of zesty sausage pizza with fennel seeds and enough heat to make it truly interesting! I cannot wait for my next visit, congratulations!!!4/21/2013 12:00:00 AMThis was my first time tryingThis was my first time trying Range, and it very quickly became one of my new favorite restaurants in DC! We had about nine or ten dishes, and everything was delicious, all the way down to the simple dishes like roasted turnips and carrots (who doesn't love root vegetables?). The cocktail menu was packed with inspired, original drinks (our favorite was "what's with all the tattoos"), and although we had a reservation for a table, we ended up just staying at the bar to eat because the guys behind the bar were all really helpful and attentive. Highly recommend the chocolatey peanut butter dessert. I don't know what the name of it is, but it's worth seeking out.4/21/2013 12:00:00 AMHad a great time at Range,Had a great time at Range, with super flavorful food and great service.4/20/2013 12:00:00 AMWe had a great dinner at Range. We had a great dinner at Range. The waitress was very knowledgeable about the menu and made great suggestions. She was funny and engaging. The food was excellent. The portion size was small, but we enjoyed that because we could try many items on the menu.4/19/2013 12:00:00 AMWashington has a new hit!Washington has a new hit! Food was outstanding. The quality was that of a New York eatery. Everything is hand done down to the cut fries and desserts. I went 3 days ago and I am still dreaming of the food.4/19/2013 12:00:00 AMJust GOOverall fabulous. Another Voltaggio spectacular. Food was exquisite. Service warm, efficient and personal. Not easy to establish. Beef nothing short of perfect. Would love to re-visit soon. Even pizza to write home about.4/19/2013 12:00:00 AMThis is my second visit andThis is my second visit and I love RANGE, but it is loud, and the tables are so nice and big that it is hard to lean over and keep up a conversation.
BUT- the food was astounding, and the staff was just as great.4/19/2013 12:00:00 AMThis was my third trip, firstThis was my third trip, first for lunch. The food is just amazing. A bit pricey, but really good.4/19/2013 12:00:00 AMwonderful lunch; great suggestionswonderful lunch; great suggestions and overview from the server4/19/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat placeWent to this place not knowing what to expect, but all I can say is they did an amazing job4/18/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat and welcome to ChevyGreat and welcome to Chevy Chase. BUT PLEASE!!!! can something be done about the noise?
We came as a group of four old friend reconnecting after a long time, but were real tired having to shout at each other because of the deafening noise4/18/2013 12:00:00 AMWonderful place. I have dinedWonderful place. I have dined here many times and have yet to be disappointed. The food is great, the wine choices are good. Everything that I have tried I have liked! I highly recommend it!4/17/2013 12:00:00 AMI eat brussels sprouts allI eat brussels sprouts all of the time and Range's version are a stand-out! The server was friendly, enthusiastic and helpful. Dining here by myself (out of town visitor) was so pleasant. I look forward to returning when I am in DC again.4/17/2013 12:00:00 AMI was very impressed withI was very impressed with every aspect of our dining experience including the management intervening to switch our table from the outset to the knowledge of our server to the quality and presentation of the dishes themselves. Would HIGHT reccommend and will repeat with frequency given the opportunity. I also might add that my wife and I dine out VERY frequently and do so at upscale restaurants. Exceeded my expectations all around! Thank you for making our 35th anniversary a memorable one.4/15/2013 12:00:00 AMThe whole experience was awesome! The whole experience was awesome! The food was outstanding and all of it was recommended by our exceptional waiter, Ben. I will definitely return.4/14/2013 12:00:00 AMWe ordered the shaved asparagus,We ordered the shaved asparagus, cheese, and bacon pizza and the striped bass with bbq hazelnuts. The pizza was an excellent thin-crusted version. The crust was crispy on the outside and airy on the inside with a nutty flavor. The robiola and ricotta salata cheeses added texture and flavor. My only quibble was that the bacon which should have been lean and smoky, was just grizzly cubes of flavorless fat. The striped bass was perfectly cooked and delicious, but the accompanying hazelnuts were awful. They were in a tomato-based sauce which overwhelmed the flavor the nuts which were soft rather than crunchy. It made no sense to pair them with the delicate flavor of the fish.
I would return to try other offerings.4/14/2013 12:00:00 AM
