My entrée, Chicken Parmesan, almost filled the entire plate. The outstanding sauce even made the spaghetti side a topnotch choice. My husband, a rather fussy eater, was effusive about his delicious Shrimp Scampi and Pasta dish. Both entrees were rather reasonably priced. Because we had a birthday cake awaiting us at home, we skipped dessert. We did go on a Friday night so there was a guy in the bar area (but overlooking the dining area) singing Frank Sinatra songs. He sounded just like Sinatra. I asked the server what was on the cheese platter, he said "different cheeses." the staff should really know what is on the menu. The cheese platter by the way was terrible, 4 paper thin slises of apple and 3 grapes cut in half to go with three differnt very robust cheeses. It was up to me to guess what they were, still not sure but they were all very strong. The dinners however redeemed the appetizers, I had the parpadelle pomodoro and my husband had the chicken parm, both were great! All staff including the bartender, server, hostess, managers, and the musician seemed to go out of their way to make sure everything was a good experience. The food and service made me think of the old world charm of good solid food made like they did generations ago and service that you don't see today - not overly formal, but there to make sure your experience is great. My wife had the Chicken Parm and I had the Veal Parm. Both are a great deal when you consider how big the piece of chicken or veal was. I also had the Mussels in White sauce and it was probably one of the best I've had in years. We were pleasantly surprised at how wonderful the food and the service were. We shared an appetizer, and 'dipped' the plate clean with the crusty bread. We each had fantastic entrees - black lobster ravioli w/scallops, stuffed pork chop, wonderful chicken marsala, and we shared two desserts - cannoli cake and tiramisu. There were several wait staff taking care of us. They were friendly, but left us alone for time to talk. The room was modern and open without the normal tight quarters of old Italian restaurants. Everything was done perfectly, and the bill was less than expected. If you know the storied past of Ralph's in the city, you should not expect old world charm or historically quaint decorations. My daughter's filet mignon was delivered very well done when she had requested medium rare. The waiter said it would take a while to get a new one. The manager happened by and saw she had no plate and asked why, so I told him. He went to the kitchen and returned in a few minutes with a perfectly cooked steak. Then, when the bill came, there was no mention of the incident, no apology, and no discount. Also, I was charged for a side that I asked for instead of the regular side. However, by the time we left, we weren't able to hear each other because of the additional noise from the other tables. We arrived early so got a couple of drinks at the bar first. My martini was made perfectly, dry with extra olives. Nice ambiance at the inside bar.
For dinner, we split the calamari which was really tasty although the sauce was a little oily. We also split a Caesar salad, which was pretty standard, nothing really remarkable. For our entrees, my husband got the scallop and pasta special and I got the linguine with red clam sauce. We both devoured our dinners. Very good.
Overall we both enjoyed our meals. Portions were generous and it was nice to go out for a nice dinner in K o P somewhere that's not a chain restaurant. I went to this restaurant for my birthday dinner with my family. We were told by friends that we had to try this restaurant. There are two Matts who waiter there. I was told to ask for Cousin Matt. He was wonderful. Attentive. Great service. My table was thrilled. We never needed for anything. The service was amazing. We will make this our new place for special occasions, and we will certainly ask for Cousin Matt, whenever we go. From the mussels red and white, and the Sicilian calamari, Veal Chop, Veal Picante, Veal Parm, a special (with shrimp, broc, in a mussels white sauce over penne) amazing. The entire staff came out to sing happy birthday. If you don't make Ralph's your place to go, you are crazy. Our waiter and the entire staff went way out of their way to pay special attention to our children and make them comfortable.
