A word from Rajvilaas
Crystal chandeliers and Burmese teak, plus an enormous painting of a noble 18th-century Indian family, all serve notice that Rajvilaas Fine Indian Cuisine in Piscataway has a serious ambition to "celebrate the best of Indian and British royal heritage." (Cody Kendall, Star Ledger 26th April 2013) />But it is the effectively spiced whole Tandoori Pomfret ($16.95) that clinches the deal, a specialty setting a standard for the other dishes, which happily do not fall short.
The Chicken 65 ($7.95), aka "fiery fried chicken," is an example of a dish that should be taken as is. The recipe for the chicken, conceived in 1965 in Madras, involves generous participation from cayenne pepper, ginger and vinegar. That’s its nature, so don’t go for this one if you like your Indian food to be less assertive. Hint: Order some cooling raita ($3.95) with it for dipping and the yogurt with cucumber will ease the sting.

  • "In addition to excellent versions of the usual Northern India items, they have many fine Southen dishes. Try Chicken Chettinad; Tandoori Salmon; Chicken Methi; Chicken Hariyali; and chickpea dishes. BYO. Reasonable prices for good portions. Some staff members are not fluent in English, although they work hard and are very nice. This leads to some service issues. Nice decor; good space between tables."

  • "Me and my wife had been here for dinner on Valentine's day. There were just a couple of employees and they had to take orders and receive people as well. The food was served after 35 mins of waiting which really ruined our night. Also though they claim to serve south Indian food most of them were North Indian based. When we were fed up and asked for the check it never came. I had to walk to the Billing desk and request them. The prices were also high compared to other restaurants around the place. In short, horrible service and pathetic food."

  • "This is a restaurant that wants desperately to be good but too many things went wrong during our meal. First off, the place smells funny, not like food but like cleaning and incense. The server was very pleasant but the wait for the food was too long. One of the dishes was just awful. When I didn't eat it the owner came and apologized saying they hadn't had time to properly marinate the chicken and took it off the bill. That was nice but you can't put on your menu what you aren't prepared to serve properly. I would happily have chosen another dish if I'd been told that one wasn't available. Clearly they want to succeed but they will have to get their timing issues worked out. I might go back but for now I'll stick to Moghul."

  • "We went to Rajvilaas because it is close and we were in the mood for indian food. The restaurant was empty when we arrived and we were seated immediately. I have been to several Indian restaraunts before and was aware of the wait for the food, but it was extremely a long wait, but the food was worth it. The waiter did apologize and said that he hoped we would return which we will... but we will make sure we have the evening clear."

  • "No being familiar to Indian food but adventurous, we when to Rajvilaas for dinner. We found the staff very healpful and axious to see that we had a positive dinning experience The restaurant was spotlessly clean, wait staff nicely dressed, and well versed in the menu. Food was prepared fresh so the wait at the table was a little longer than normal, but when it was delivered it was worth the wait. The food was tasty, our request for limited hot spices was followed and we enjoyed our meal We will revisit the Rajvilaas and recommend it."

  • "We are vegetarians and the restaurant caters more to the non veg crowd. There are veg options and the chef is more than willing to make any special requests which was nice. The staff was great and the restaurant was clean. There is a weekend lunch buffet that sounds promising for approx $12. We may try that at a later date. The food is a little pricey and consistent with other comparable restaurants in the area where you have to buy rice and bread separately. BYOB is also an option as the place doesn't have a liquor license."

  • "The service is superb, it makes the place worth visiting. The staff are super friendly and helpful and they take care of everything promptly and it feels "fancy." The food is good, but not great, it is somewhat average as far as Indian restaurants in Central Jersey go. We had the Chale and Paneer Makhani, safe choices and prepared safely (meaning, plain and typical). The roti and naan were very good, however, and the kulfi for dessert was tasty. I will probably return for the lunch buffet to sample more of their dishes, but dinner may not be in the cards."

  • "I went with a group of 7 co-workers who were visiting NJ from all across the US on a Monday night. The service was impeccable and food was great. They allow BYOB and conveniently a liquor store is next door. This will definitely be a place to bring co-workers for dinner."

  • "Food quality was very good but unfortunately they had a birthday party in the main restaurant space the night we ate there and we were seated in a relatively stark and narrow side room for dinner. No ambient music added to the starkness of the meal environment. The food justifies a return visit and hopefully we will be seated in the main restaurant space."

  • "We tried this new Indian restaurant in late July. I really enjoyed all their dishes and will definitely go back. The quality and quantity of the entrees, meats and sauces were better than most I have tried in Edison. The ambience and decor was great. The restaurant was clean. The staff helpful and quick. Just wish it was a little closer to where we live."

  • "We went to this new place and had good experience. We were 8 of us so we got to try lot of item’s. My favorite is paneer Makhani and I loved it. My mom tried tandoori pomfret. The ambience and food gets 5 out of 5. Our second order of naan got late and had to wait."

  • "We had been going to the restaurant that was previously in this space and thought that food was wonderful. The new restaurant is just as good with a much improved decor. The waiter was helpful, and the food was delicious, served in very pretty metal serving dishes. There is no bar, so you can bring your own wine, which is always a plus. We went on a Thursday and no one was in the restaurant except our party. The waiters did say it gets crowed on the weekend, so we're hoping that's true because we'd like to see this restaurant do well."
