A word from Raincity Grill
A lot of restaurants can claim they use local produce, seafood and meats, but Raincity Grill marches further: we tell you the name of the farm. A few examples? Raincity Grill is proud to serve you vegetables from North Arm Farm in Pemberton (98 miles away), pork from Sloping Hills in Qualicum Beach (80 miles away), chicken from Rossdown Farms in Abbotsford (50 miles away), Salt Spring Island Mussels and Salmon (off the waters of Vancouver), and greens from the Fraser Valley (86 miles away). Taste the locavore difference at Raincity Grill, the restaurant link to the best ingredients in the world: Vancouver’s own backyard. Located in the West End, on shimmering English Bay.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "We did enjoy the staff, but were surprised at the limited menu choices. I order the Pink Salmon and my wife ordered the surf and turf. The most disappointing thing about the restaurant was portion sizes, I am comfortable with the usually smallish portioning in Fine Dining but this was a bit ridiculous, the pink salmon was two inches by two inches and a half inch thick. The salmon was over cooked and the placed some material on the crispy skin which made the skin soggy. My wife's surf and turf had 4 scallops, a small piece of pork belly (very high fat even for Pork belly) and a bizarre side. The Chocolate mouse had been scooped by the tablespoon and the meringue consisted of a few broken up pieces again no more than a tablespoon. "

  • "I made reservations for a group of 6 of us for a Sunday brunch. Our table was terrific, the service excellent and the food delicious. The one disappointment was that on a menu of 5 brunch items they were out of French toast as well as one of the 4 desserts. When the choice is so limited, it's hard to have a back up. However the food was delicious and well prepared and worth the slightly upscale prices. I hope they get over the "deconstructed" phase pretty soon though. It doesn't need to try to be hipster, the food speaks for itself"

  • "In the words of Arnie S. "I'll be back" My wife and I had the tasting menu Saturday eve. The food was fanfrikkentastic. Eat there."

  • "We had the seven course tasting menu with the wine pairings and it was truly an unforgetable experience! We HIGHLY reccommend Raincity Grille in Vancouver!"

  • "great setting near the beach, have always enjoyed the food - would go back again and anytime."

  • "We went there partly based on this restaurant's reviews and reputation. This place is definitely trading on its past glory. For a restaurant in a great location, the room is dark & dowdy. The service was attentive but nothing remarkable. Did nor match the price point for the food. The food doesn't live up to florid descriptions on the menu. Our table had the salmon which didn't look great; the beef tenderloin which was accompanied by a mish-mash of stuff that cluttered the plate, and the special . Cooking was more to the standard of a talented home chef than a professional chef. The recent reviews on Open Table - are spot on the mark.. Vancouver has some great restaurants, this restaurant from my experience isn't one of them."

  • "When I looked at the web site, this place looked REALLY nice! It IS nice, but not stuffy. It is LOVELY. It is small and cozy! The food was amazing, the service was amazing and the setting in English Bay ! Go to this restaurant!"

  • "Great find, even if it has been there for years. It was my first experience and I will definitely return. In the area of English Bay there are dozens of restaurants, with 3 big chains within 1 block of Raincity Grill. The menu is small but there was something for everyone. We were a party of 6 and tried all 5 entrees, 2 starters and 3 desserts. The service was great, efficient but not intrusive. It was a great place to take out of town visitors as the menu showcases local products."

  • "Had an outstanding brunch at Rain City Grill. Cannot believe how this long-time gem still maintains highest quality of food in city. Service was pleasant, food outstanding! And very reasonable compared with the chains that are so much worse."

  • "The food was very good for the 6 course Groupon tasting menu that we had. The only criticism of the menu would be that it had very little in the way of vegetables in any of the dishes, and a couple of the dishes were not exactly as described, e.g. "clams in broth with tomatoes and chorizo" had one small piece of tomato and no chorizo in the bowl. Other than that the food was delicious and the service was great. On the night we were there, they had a kitchen staffing issue, so it took a very long time to receive our first dish. However, the server was so communicative and apologetic that it didn't bother us much at all."

  • "We have been to rain city several times, for special occasions. This time we found a groupon special with a 6 course tasting menu. The food was absolutely fantastic, every course, and the service impeccable."

  • "We were off to a good start with the appetisers -the pork belly was beautiful. However the main course was a different story. The cooking of the duck was the worst I have tried including home cooking- it was grey and fatty and so tough that you couldn't chew through it. The service was robotic and fluctuated between good and bad- good up until main course was delivered - then disappeared after this. There was no chance of returning the duck and when the table was cleared of our dishes not a word was mentioned by the waitressas about my full plate going back to the kitchen. The dessert of deconstructed cheesecake was a "try-hard-to-be-trendy"dish and smeared completely across the plate-not enjoyable. We will try elsewhere next time."

  • "We went with a Groupon for the tasting menu. It was absolutely delicious with intense flavours and top quality ingredients. The service was immpecable"

  • "Dinner was generally very nice; with a good value set menu, although I now recall that I've had the dessert from the set menu before, and I don't get it: it seems to be comprised mainly of salty bits of merangue and chocolate cookie, although the ice cream accompaniment was nice. Waitress forgot my partner's dessert, but then provided it free of charge. The cornish game hen and little quail's egg was lovely; nice crispy skin on the hen."

  • "We took friends from Toronto to dine here recently and everyone at our table thoroughly enjoyed their meals. The only small annoyance was that two people at our table ordered the slow cooked ribs only to be told they had run out. This should have been mentioned when we given the menus. The only disappointment was with the dessert menu. We were surprised to find that all the desserts are served deconstructed. Our friends both ordered the chocolate dessert and found the presentation left them eating some dry & crunchy bits instead of the creamy texture traditionally used in the mousse."

  • "My husband and I went to the RainCity Grill for our 5th annivesary and it is clear the staff either do not read the special requests or they don't care. Service was overall terrible - They had us seated at the loudest table nearest the hostess stand even though a table at a window was available (we asked to be moved). My bread plate was removed and never replenished. We ordered a wine pairing to go with our preset menu and the server forgot to bring the wine with our main course- we had to flag down another server to bring it to us and got no apology from our server. Our coffee came after our dessert despite asking for it with dessert. Overall the food was good and given it was Dine Out it was good value for the spend in that regard."

  • "Dining at Raincity Grill on Valentine's Day was an epic endeavour. We spent 3+ hours at the restaurant (not by choice) after arriving ~25 mins late for our reso. We called ahead to let them know we'd be late getting there (angry toddler), and they told us that it was no problem, they were running quite late on their first service. We arrived (parking nightmare) and waited 20+ mins to be seated. The $76/person prix-fixe menu was unspectacular. Food was tasty but uninspired, but not what I'd expect to pay that much for. Main problem was the service - pleasant, but we waited ~45 mins for our appetizers, and over 30 minutes between courses. After arriving around 9:30pm, we didn't get out until after 12:30am. We were exhausted by 11pm. Ho-hum."

  • "Well a great restaurant dropped the ball, Beyond slow service , average food and not one thing done to make up for it ! Everyone in the place wanted to walk out and I am sure if every place in the city was not booked they would have . Waiting an hour for the first course and then wait , wait , wait more for an incorrect second to show up ... I know it was a busy day ,but they have just lost a repeat customer"
    Dined on 2/14/2014
  • "The overall experience was extremely poor because of the wait. We waited 3 hours and that was only because we rushed the server. In the end, we had to get our dessert to go because we were tired of waiting. There were tables beside us who waited longer then us and they did not get their appetizers yet. You would expect the staff would be better prepared for a set menu Valentine's evening. Food was being delivered in the wrong order and to the wrong table. There was a table beside me who got the wrong order 3 times. It took about 30 minutes to get our clams (first course), 45 minutes to get our appetizers, 90 minutes to get our entree and 30 to get our dessert ordered to go."

  • "Raincity Grill is our favorite restaurant -it's the reason we chose it for our Valentine's Day dinner. The food is absolutely incredible, but the hidden gem is that all the food is from BC. I'm proud of this fact and brag about it to out-of--towners."

  • "Dine out Vancouver .....so thought we would try Raincity Grill. Everything went well. Short ribs were excellent. Barley was great (except I am in the process of reading Grain Brain and feel that I ruined my gluten free diet)! My husband had the salmon; that was very good but he didn't like the custard-like sauce. Entrees were good. I had the artichoke and the other was chili rub tuna...excellent. Chocolate dessert was delicious. Great service."

  • "Really great evening. Only complaint was from the rutabaga ravioli ... I know one can take creative liberties but for our vegetarian friend this 'entré' lacked a bit of girth; namely the pasta. Interesting take but they should forewarn that the ravioli was a take on ravioli, it was a bit deceiving. That said, everything else was incredible -- shortrib was the best I've had -- and I'm really happy we picked this place for dineout."

  • "I took my mother her for Dine Out Vancouver as I've previously enjoyed the food and experience here. Neither of us have a big appitite but the portions were tiny. Every order required an extra (at charge) to actually make it a meal of any kind otherwise the food was just veggies. The dessert was so small the whole thing could have fitted on a dessert spoon in one go! I apologized to my mother for such a poor experience as she's visiting from out of town and we wanted a nice meal out together. What food we did have was good. The service was average as our server seemed very rushed and was possibly serving too many tables."

  • "Although the menu was more vegetarian - our server told us it had been designed that way - I loved the food! I was able to order things I would never usually order and it all tasted delectable! The mushroom soup was creamy and rich. The ravioli I ordered wasn't what I expected, but it had a unique taste. Again, it's not something I would order on a regular basis, but it was fun to try. My company had the risotto with the added short beef which was very flavourful and tender! The desert items were great as well. We went on a Saturday, so it was a bit busy. It took a while for our server to come and take our order - probably around 10-15 minutes wait. That was probably the only downside to our dine out!"
    Dined on 1/18/2014
  • "Worst experience had out in a while. Service was slow which was understandable due to it being so busy but the food was repulsive. We both started with the mushroom soup which smelled and tasted so awful we couldn't eat it, entrees also weren't the tasties..... The risotto was flavourless and the ravioli was too over powered by the rutabaga. The beef for the risotto was pretty good and the scallops were nicely done but could have used some more flavour. Best part of the meal was dessert by far!"

  • "I had the beet carpaccio as a started, rutabaga ravioli, with scallops (perfectly prepared) and the panna cotta as a dessert. I would order all again, as they were visually appetizing, as well as delicious. Portions could have been larger, which may simply have been a factor of how much I enjoyed them and wanted more..."

  • "Went to Raincity Grill for didine-out and ordered the Artichoke for the appetizer, the Risotto with the short rib and the pear for dessert. The Artichoke was good although I question what temperature it should have come out as. It was cold throughout. Apparently, it was seared but had no taste of searing in it. The Risotto I ordered was very mushy and tasteless. Worse risotto I've ever had. It also looked very unappetizing. Looked like oatmeal with peas and cherry tomatoes thrown in. The braised short rib was delicious. The pear dessert I ordered was just ok. Wouldn't order it on it's own."

  • "I went for my birthday during Dine Out Vancouver. My hubby, friends and I had never been. The menu online looked good, but when we got there we were told it was a vegetarian dinner with the option of adding on protein for an extra cost. This defeats the purpose of Dine Out. It felt like false advertising. We also got the wine pairing for an extra $20, although I felt even that was poorly executed. We were asked if we wanted the omnivore or vegetarian wine pairing. I was under the impression that it would be decided upon by the waiter/waitress depending on what we meal option we chose. The food itself was ok, but quite rich and fatty tasting, and a couple of our orders were messed up. I have no interest in returning, nor do my friends."
    Dined on 1/18/2014
  • "Emphasis on local, fresh ingredients. DOV menu, plus meats and wine pairing is a great value. Portions are a little small, so if you are an omnivore pay the extra to add the meat."

  • "I first ate at the Rain City Grill about 20 years ago, and the food was superb then. I don't live in Vancouver, but because of business, I've been there twice in the past 6 months. On both occasions I made a point to have dinner at this lovely restaurant. The food and service is outstanding. On my most recent visit in December 2013, I had the duck. It was flavourful and done perfectly. The interior is a bit tired, but I think that is part of its' charm. It is not at all pretentious, and is suitable for both casual or more "occasion" dining. The location (right by English Bay) is an attraction as well, and very conducive to having a lovely meal and then going for a stroll. I highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "My husband and I went for a date night and overall we were happy with our choice. The chef was kind enough to make a custom vegan platter which was delicious. My husband had a tuna starter that he loved but was a bit disappointed with his squash risotto which was too cheesy for his liking. He did appreciate the generous portions."

  • "Raincity's new years pre fixe menu was outstanding + delicious! Lots of impressive seasonal, local & organic choices for everyone, fantastic service & super knowledgeable servers. I would compare Raincity to Chez Panisse (Alice Waters) - I much prefered Raincity Grill. Would totally go back, the brunch menu looks outstanding too! #YUM"

  • "When two of the choices on a 'tasting' menu are a burger and fish and chips, I call that cheating. Yes, it's early bird, so cheaper, but really? Also interesting that the wine pairings with only three courses was a dollar more than the regular five-course tasting menu. The food was good - don't get me wrong, but we had hoped for an economical choice, not a choice of pasta or pub grub."

  • "We've been here before and were always impressed with the food and service. This time however after being seated promptly, we waited and waited. No one came to offer water nor a beverage for at least twelve minutes. When the server did come he offered an inadequate apology. In a restaurant of this type, if a server is busy, others on the team should assist; diners should not be left dangling. Yet that is exactly what happened in our case. Once the process did begin, it was satisfactory but slightly uneven. Food was great, as usual, but the overall service lacked the seamless kind of feeling that we had experienced in the past. Yes, we will return, but only slowly (like the service)."
