Diner Reviews
  • "We received recommendation for Rafele from our food tour. We were told to try the chef tasting menu. What a pleasant surprise! Not only did we receive one-on-one attention from the chef...we had a terrific selection of food. Rafele is a cozy, neighborhood gem. We will make it one of our stops from now on."

  • "Finalamente un autentico ristorante italiano! Finally, an authentic Italian restaurant. I felt transported home to Emilia-Romagna. The Gnocco fritto were heavenly puffs of dough covered with prosciutto: a must have. The pastas were all homemade. The tagliolini ai funghi, the pettole ragu and the ravioli di spinaci were delicate and savory, all at the same time. Wonderful Tiramisu. Everything has an absolutely authentic flavor and presentation. Go here if it is a true taste of Italy you desire. Il cibo, il vino, l'atmosfera-assolutamente perfetto. The food, the wine, the atmosphere-absolutely perfect.La ingrazio molto per una spendida serata di ottimo cibo."

  • "Ok, reasonable for NYC. This is not a cheap place, by any means: $150 for two, shared ap, 2 mains, 2 sides, 4 glasses of wine, 1 dessert. However, the quality of food is equal to the really pricey places. Best pizza ever! The brussel sprouts were golden and sweet. The strip steak tender and flavorful. The molten chocolate cake was excellent. The server's wine recommendations were right on. A great evening, and the only down side is it is so popular, it becomes quite noisy. A vibrant atmosphere more than a romantic one."

  • "Good food, so-so ambiance, poor service. Our waiter did his best, but he was handling the entire dining room alone!"

  • "Rafele is a place with great service, a good wine selection and wonderful cuisine. The pace of the service is attentive, but not in the slightest bit pushy. Food selections are rich and varied with a good mix of specials and standard menu fare. The portions are just the right size. And the desserts were fantastic. We loved it."

  • "We found Rafele after doing some online research. This would our last night in the city and made a reservation several weeks ahead. The room had a nice neighborhood buzz and was warm and comfortable. The food was unique and outstanding. This isn't just another Italian joint. We'll never visit NYC without a stop at Rafele. Thanks for a memorable experience!"

  • "I return whenever I can and bring new people who tell me what a great restaurant Rafele is! I agree! I'm Italian and must say that the food is like my mother's....and that is the highest compliment I can pay the chef. Keep up the good work."

  • "Terrific interesting menu with lots of unusual but still solidly italian dishes. Unusual flavors, lots of vegetables, great sides and salads. Excellent wines by the glass. generous portions. Ate till stuffed!"

  • "the food was stellar. but the otherwise successful efforts to create a warm, inviting italian ambience were totally thwarted by loud classic rock playing very loudly. as much as I love American Pie and Hotel California and Dylan - it's not what I want to hear reverberating in a small Italian cafe during dinner time. just a total mismatch. it was also challenging to get wait staff attention though the restaurant was not busy.."

  • "Had an excellent meal with a buddy of mine. I had a halibut special, my friend had the branzino, we started with artichoke appetizer-all excellent. Wiater was great, letting us taste two different wines, so we could pick the best. Good warm decor."

  • "Recently dined at Rafele after reading numerous positive reviews online. Booked a table for myself, husband and two children ages 13 and 10, for a Saturday evening. We were greeted warmly and taken to the downstairs dining area. It is much quieter than the bustling upstairs, but perfect for our family to enjoy the comfortable surroundings and conversation with each other. Our server was prompt, courteous and helpful with menu selections, including the impressive wine selection. We all enjoyed our dishes which included the fried artichoke appetizer, mushroom and truffle pasta, pasta amatriciana, and the pork chop. We would definitely recommend Rafele for a nice West Village dining experience."

  • "- Food was a little pricey - Service was too fast. Done in 40 minute with apps. - Arancini was very good but slightly cold in the center. - Carbonara was good, but the pancetta was a little undercooked for my liking. I like it well done. I would go again!"

  • "Could've been so much better (my pasta was pretty badly/over cooked), but my main course aside, it was cool vibrant spot worth checking out."

  • "I brought my wife there on her birthday. The staff was extremely friendly and was doing their very best to make us feel comfortable. The Capolata's were just out of this world!!! It was the first time we had some. The main meal was good as well. I would highly recommend the place for a romantic dinner or for a night out among friends."

  • "It was Valentines Day and I have a shellfish allergy. Many of the offerings on their menu had shellfish. The staff made sure I had substitutions which were great. Their attention was appreciated. Everything was delicious and a good time was had for all."

  • "Rafele came recommended to me as a favorite in the neighborhood, and it did not disappoint. The beet salad special with warm goat cheese was spectacular! Delicate, fresh and delicious. The gnocchi was a standout. The pizza, fired in a brick oven from Italy, was incredible! The funghi with truffle oil was my choice, and it was rich with a light crust. The scent alone made my mouth water. When our waiter heard it was my birthday, he brought out a ricotta cheesecake - candle included - that was sinful and worth every bite! Leave room for dessert, if you can spare it. I would not have selected this dessert from a menu, and I've never tasted anything so light and creamy. A new favorite!"

  • "Since it opened my wife and I go to Rafele's every month or so, sometimes alone or with friends from all over the metropolitan NYC area, the USA or who live in other countries. While we obviously never tire of the restaurant we are getting worn out raving about it on Open Table.(Just kidding, really and truly because everything about Rafele's is very much worthy of endless raves. )"

  • "Excellent Italian food. We had the chef's taster menu on a Sunday night. Five courses of nicely prepared and presented pasta, fish and shellfish. Very tasty and very, very filling. The host/maitre'd/head waiter was excellent and made sure that we had everything we needed and explained how each dish was prepared as it was brought out to us. The restaurant is in a great location on 7th Ave in West Village. There was a pleasantly jovial atmosphere in the restaurant, possibly because it was Xmas/New Year time of year. The restaurant has a typically Italian theme to it and has an open kitchen where you can watch the chefs at work. All in all a delightful experience at a reasonable price. I'll go again next time I'm in NYC."
