A word from R J Grunt's
The first Lettuce Entertain You restaurant, Grunts still exudes the funky, devil-may-care lifestyle of the 70s in its style, décor, music, and menu. Happily for all of us, the best eating of that day continues to be some of the best today.

While there"s a huge menu that's as much fun to eat your way through as it is to read, many of Grunts' old favorites spark return visits. The burgers are arguably the best in town. The salad bar boasts more than 50 ingredients daily. Giant malts and milkshakes are hand scooped and come in a rainbow of favors. Oh! Don't forget the barbecued baby back ribs and pulled pork sandwiches!Continued

  • "Brought my nephew from Madison to RJ Grunts as he was in town for some training. There are many great restaurants in Madison, so was anxious to see what he thought. He was impressed with the burger and the salad bar. The waitress brought a free dessert to him as it was his first time there, but we had eaten so much food, we couldn't do it justice."

  • "RJG was the first of the mighty LEYE chain. And, judging from the crowd on a Saturday night, it is still as popular as it ever was. A great place for good comfort food at reasonable prices. Valet parking available in an area where it is often difficult to find parking."

  • "Grunts can be counted on to provide good food with a healthy dose of nostalgia. Nothing like seeing the hundreds of black and white pictures of women from the '70s and music from the same era to remind you of how things used to be!"

  • "Convenient to Park West , Grunts is a good place for a meal before the show. Great salad bar and the food is all you could want. Nothing fancy, just good eating Chicago food. Has a friendly neighborhood feel. Can be a little tight around tables when crowded , but just need to work around this. Would go there again next time at a show at Park West."

  • "Our niece is a college student downtown and we wanted to take her out for dinner to visit. She was craving a salad bar. Looked on the web, read other reviews and found your spot. Great spot, great salad bar with tons of fresh toppings. Perfect spot to fill the craving. When our server (who was great) got swamped all of a sudden with extra tables, her manager stepped right in to deliver our dessert without missing a beat. Service was seamless. First visit here, but won't be our last."

  • "We had a great time at the restaurant and the food was very good. Due to heavy traffic in the area yesterday, we were a 1/2 hour late on our reservation time. Our table was ready and the staff was very understanding about the traffic situation."

  • "Great salad bar, extensive (and expensive) sandwiches."

  • "We had family visiting from Texas and they have some small children. The hambugers and shakes are wonderful. The service was a little inconsistent, We had to wait for a part of our order to arrive, while others had their main course for over ten minutes. We also had to wait a awhile to great our check and the young chilcren were becoming restless. The server did bring complimentary ice cream for the kids which they really appreciated."

  • "Five of us had lunch/brunch here to celebrate a friend's birthday. The food selection was good, with sunday brunch also offering a good option. Service was outstanding and friendly. The sandwiches and fries are large helpings. After lunch, Second City was just a mile away."

  • "The thing about Grunt's is they have a great burger, very nice wait staff and the place is most everything on the menu is consistently good. Exactly what a neighborhood place should be. It's never going to be "amazing"--its always going to be the same, wonderful place."

  • "It's close, it's got a bar, it's noisy enough so my kids don't bother anyone, the salad bar is unparalleled, and the staff is always nice to us."

  • "Although our party was seated on cold blustery evening in the line of the door, the place hasn't changed much since it opened in the early 70s. The music is the same, great classic rock. And we still had the same great personalities we had then:)!!!!! French Onion Soup is the way to go. The Nachos with Guacamoli was fantastic! The Burgers are amazing."

  • "Known for their salad bar, this restaurant lives up to their reputation! Great salad bar with some awesome unique options, cool and comfortable atmosphere, and friendly wait staff. A little on the pricey side, which is par for the course for Lettuce Entertain You restaurants, but great service and great meal made the price tag a little more bearable. Good fit for most occasions, light enough for an informal meal, but sophisticated enough for a date setting."

  • "I am an avid fan of the lettuce entertain you empire how ever I have never been to the original. Now I have and it delivered the salad bar is so great that I barely touch my burger. I did enjoy the bite I forced down and it was fantastic as well."

  • "We went to RJ Grunt's before an evening play not far away. My husband had waxed poetic about their burgers in the past, and I had never been. He warned me it is a small place without a lot of room and it certainly was! But we were given a booth and even though crowds normally make me a bit anxious, I was very comfortable. The salad bar lived up to the hype and it's a must-have when you go. The nachos were huge and more than enough for a group of people. My husband's burger was perfectly done as were his homemade chips, and such generous portions he couldn't finish despite how good they were. I am very glad we reserved with Open Table, because by the time we left the entire waiting area was SRO with others who wanted to dine."

  • "I loved our waitress but the food was undercooked and we basically ate raw meat. The waitress was so kind to como the meal and offer us free dessert but I did not feel good after we left the restaurant. Bad experience for my first time being there."

  • "Had a group of 5+ in town, and this restaurant fit our needs perfectly. Great food, wonderful service, and really enjoyable experience. I'll be coming back for sure, and I imagine that my out-of-town friends will want to come back every time they're in Chicago! Thanks to our great hosts and hostesses!"

  • "After two years of living in the city, I finally made it to the original lettuce entertain you resturant over the weekend. I absolutely loved it - great food, the staff was attentive and even though it was a packed house, you couldn't really tell. I loved all the photos of former employees on the wall."

  • "This LEYE favorite will always be a fave of my husband & mine. This is where we got engaged 41+ years ago. We went back to celebrate our 4oth. Although I had specifically called to tell them of the event (& the special significance) they didn't do anything to acknowledge same, very unusual for a Lettuce restaurant. When we told them it was our "special place" they brought a hot fudge sundae to the table. Still, a good place & special for us."

  • "Our waitress was excellent. The one hamburger at our table was way undercooked but otherwise the food was very good. We really liked the turkey burger."

  • "We love RJ Grunts. It's comfort food, if your comfort food is burgers, salad bars, nachos, wings, and milk shakes! From the 70's vibe to the AMAZING Kettle chips to the half-price burgers after 10PM, we always are satisfied with our indulgences. Tips: Add bacon to the peppercorn burger and you have the perfect blue-cheese-bacon-onion burger. Also, ask for the kettle chips to be crispy and add Cholula hot sauce ... YUM!!!! Finally, the salad bar is a great option to a burger or entree!!! Friendly servers, good, simple food, right near the zoo. We love it!"

  • "My husband and I were frequent diners of RJ Grunts in the 1980'2. We took our 2 sons (20) and (24) to celebrate my son's birthday. We all had burgers which come in enormous baskets which kinda take over the table. The burgers were tasty along with their "chips" and sweet potato fries. The burgers were a little messy eating due to the bun. I think they need a firmer bun to hold everything together. Malts were consumed by my boys, as always, delicious and generous size. If considering dining, I would HIGHLY recommend making reservations."

  • "As a Lettuce restaurant I was expecting more from RJ Grunts. As a bar serving food it was good but as a restaurant serving alcohol it was not great. Everything was clean, well-lit & well maintained but it comes across as a bar atmosphere. Menus are worn and servers are overly lax and casual. Restaurant was over half empty but service was super slow. Soup came in a tiny cup - not worth the purchase but tasty. Onion rings were over battered but also good. Burgers were prepared as ordered but Green Chili burger which said it was spicy most certainly was not. Almost like they had used a green pepper instead of a hot one.The brunch buffet looked plain and not very appetizing. Server was perfectly pleasant but not very fast or efficient."

  • "The restaurant is very tight. The salad bar is delicious with lots of options. I do believe the salad bar was a little expensive. My husband ordered a burger that was a special and he thought it was pretty good."

  • "Love this cozy place. Food is excellent - no doubt! The 80s/90s music makes it fun, and the seating is lovely. The crowd says it all - a nice burger place for everyone! The only thing is parking. We always have to valet, but it is worth it."

  • "I try to go to Lincoln Park Zoo on New Years Eve with my entire family to see the lights and we stop at RJ Grunts before the light show. Weather was bad and we were never going to make the time we had reservations for yet they accommodated me and my family for a late arrival. Last year on NYE they were exceptional because of some customers that did not want to leave and my family had to wait to get our table. All I can say is RJ Grunts Lincoln Park Zoo and New Years Eve make for a great family tradition. I will spread the word on how well RJ Grunts service is!!!!"

  • "There's a reason this place has been running so long- excellent food and excellent service! Our waitress, Tempe, was very knowledgeable about the menu and helpful with suggestions that we loved! Friendly, and willing to make us all feel welcome on a bitter cold day. Looking forward to coming again! Also, Liz at the bar was a friendly face ready to pour a drink to shake off the cold. :)"
