A word from R Bistro
Executive Chef/Owner Regina Mehallick opened R bistro in 2001, blazing a trail for local, seasonal cooking in Indianapolis. Anchoring the east side of dynamic Mass Ave arts district, R bistro features a menu of brightly flavored, approachable dishes that changes weekly to emphasize Mehallick’s dedication to serving what is ripe in Indiana, including produce from her own restaurant garden. R bistro is a fiver-time James Beard Foundation Award Semi-finalist for 2010 thru 2014. The New York Times, The Washington Post, Southwest Airlines Spirit Magazine and many Indianapolis publications have touted the restaurant as a true gem. Mehallick is an active member of Slow Food USA and Slow Food Indy, and won the Catherine Brandel Fellowship in 2009 from Women Chefs & Restaurateurs. The sauce for our chicken was exceptionally tasty but did not overwhelm the bird. The dessert was fabulous. The service was remarkably attentive and friendly. The wine list included excellent wines at reasonable prices. This was far and away the best restaurant we visited in Indianapolis but it would compete for best anywhere."

I thought the atmosphere of the restaurant was a bit like an airport dining establishment. The space lacked character - long and narrow with no defining features. The interior could use a face lift, but overall the food was very nice."

Located on the rediscovered Massachusetts Avenue along the Cultural Trail, R Bistro has a frequently changing menu, a respectable wine list, consistent wait staff and a very comfortable atmosphere. A great place to begin a night before heading off to one of the nearby theaters or a stroll down the avenue to visit the galleries, shops, bars and dessert cafes. Very close to Indy Reads Books, The Best Chocolate in Town and the Phoenix Theatre."

  • "Filet topped with bleu cheese and duck breast were both sublime. Red velvet baked Alaska sounded better than it tasted. The large amount of ice cream kind of overwhelmed any chance at enjoying the red velvet cake at the bottom. The meringue was unique - perhaps a hint of lime, which bothered us a little bit because it didn't seem to go with the red velvet flavor well. Large group next to us was loud (probably 20 people), but no worries. Good food and good company, right? Everyone was pleasant, and our waiter was wonderful. We love coming here to celebrate...well, everything."

  • "We love R Bistro so much we consider it "our bistro". It's our go to restaurant. Chef Regina never fails to amaze. Besides a rotating menu, she uses local growers and vendors. She doesn't overwhelm you with entrees, but instead focuses on a few individually spectacular options for each course. Dessert is always a must. A personal favorite and one I recommend to JW guests daily."

  • "We had not dined at R Bistro for quite some time, and I am not sure why because our experience on Friday night was outstanding! Our reservation was for 6 people. The ambience of the restaurant is warm and cozy. Our party of 6 love wine and had stellar options to chose from on the wine list. Options for meat lovers as well as vegetarians with entirely fresh, local offerings in incredibly creative preparations. I started with the Corn Blini…it was decadent, a great mesh of flavors. I had Arctic Char as an entree which was the best I have ever had, served over a mashed parsnip and fennel? (I think). Cliff was our waiter, and was a true professional! Overall experience…. a Perfect 10!"

  • "My wife and I visited R Bistro for the first time as a married couple on Friday (her first ever, my second). As avid Devour Downtown diners, we were excited to try this highly-touted restaurant as part of a romantic evening. Our expectations were met in the following (but not inclusive) categories: menu creativity, freshness and taste, portion size, wine list, and neighborhood feel. Our main dishes were the most flavorful and satiating. The dessert, in second though, was equally as interesting - a chocolate beet cake. Extremely moist. We were a bit disappointed by its Devour menu. Slaw, chicken soup, and a biscuit was the only trio. Pretty banal and uninspiring. Sadly misleading but we were happy with overall experience."

  • "We've been coming here for years and have always had an incredible dining experience. The food is beautifully prepared and plated. The restaurant tries to deal with local products and everything has a fresh clean flavor. While the selections are somewhat limited, there is always something delectable to choose. Our server has great personality and the service is non intrusive. The timing is perfect as you are able to carry conversation with minimal interruption. The ambiance is quite pleasant though the chairs are a little hard. When things are hopping and the restaurant is full, the noise level goes up. It feels as if you are in the best restaurant in town and you are!"

  • "My husband and I went to RBistro during Devour Downtown and it was wonderful. We had a 9pm reservation, but the restaurant was still pretty full, so great it had a ambiance. The dining room is small and fairly casual for the type/quality of food being served. Our server was very attentive without being over-bearing. The spring rolls were amazing; winter slaw enjoyed by hubby who doesn't usually like it. Red curry shrimp over rice was good but nothing amazing. Chicken soup with biscuits was absolutely wonderful! Great for a freezing cold month like this. The banofee sundae was slightly sweet and quite refreshing. We'd go again, but prefer the funkier vibe of Black Market and Bluebeard."

  • "We went for the first time & liked it. We tried the fish & the vegetarian pasta dish. It was satisfying & tasty, but our particular flavors were not bold; a very Indiana type of dish. :) The fish was very rich & after a while, I was wishing I had something to break it up a bit...salad or an additional non-cheesy veg (it came with delicious cheesy potatoes). Made me wish I had tried the steak instead. We would return again for a special night out."
