Diner Reviews
  • "I specifically booked this spot because of the view of the wharf that on their website is advertised as just opened. When we got there we were made to wait outside because the kitchen only opens at 11am, yet on there website they say they open at 10am and we were told the deck area on the wharf was under construction."

  • "Ordered an "artisan pizza" as an appetizer and it came out stone cold--the cheese wasn't even melted. I had it returned and it took another 20 minutes for them to get our app. After finishing that, it took another 30 minutes from that point for our food to come out. I ordered a shortrib grilled cheese sandwich. Took two bites out of my grilled cheese only to discover that there was NO shortrib in my shortrib sandwich. My server apologized and told me he would have the kitchen fire up a new one, but by that time, it had already been well over an hour since we'd walked in the door. Also, my Diet Pepsi was completely flat. Despite all of these issues with the service, not a single visit by the manager to say sorry. Unacceptable."

  • "Aside from the building renovations our meal was wonderful. Service was prompt and friendly. Drinks and appetizers set the mood for the Ahi and scallops that were both terrific. Would like to eat on the dock when the construction is over but we will go back sooner to try out the bar snacks."

  • "We've loved this place in the past but, this dinner was NOT good!! We went for the food AND to sit by the water. First, people need to know they are under renovation and MOST of the place is closed off, and just the front bar room is open. Second, that's no excuse for bad food!!! And EXPENSIVE food! We won't go back."

  • "I can't recommend this place and I won't go back. I expected this restaurant would take full advantage of being near the water - but that is not the case. The front bar is looks like any other sports bar and was quite loud. The large dining room is windowless and claustrophobic - and it was stifling hot. And.. the last hope was dashed as the dockside dining was closed. The food was also bad.. I got mussels and they were completely rubbery. A waste of a location ... don't go."

  • "Food and service were pretty good but nothing stood out."

  • "The restaurant was almost empty when we arrived, but it took 10 minutes to even see our waiter. My first drink had a fly in it and had to be sent back, and the food was just okay. Their green salad is literally just lettuce, a dash of dressing, and a few croutons...certainly not worth $6. We chose the location because we wanted to sit in the atrium to watch fireworks, but it was closed for a private party."

  • "We were disappointed on a Friday night visit. The front bar was happening and busy, the back patio had an event, but the dining room was nearly empty. They were extremely late in our order as it was taking extra long to cook my husband's porkchop. When it did come - it was still not cooked properly. The server and manager could not have been more apologetic and offered us a free drink and money off the bill, but bottom line - when you offer this on the menu, your chef should be competent in cooking it. It was also a hot/stuffy atmosphere when hoping for a cool place on a hot night. Even when we got our ice cream for dessert, it had melted. Considering there were only a few tables dining, you would not expect these issues."

  • "nothing special. Pretty small menu. Heard the seating in back on the river is where you'd want to be but they had a private function the nite I went so that didn't work out."

  • "We've heard great things about Quay as a up and coming location. I was pleasantly surprised by the amazing ambiance and enjoyed the service. The staff was also flexible with our group and we did enjoy the option for the lounge after dinner. It was a very slow night for Friday evening and I party made up the majority of the restaurant but it was nice and private which was perfect for the occasion. I look forward to visiting Quay in the summer again."

  • "The beet salad was good. The blackened shrimp tacos were not blackened at all and since I couldn't use the sauce that had sriracha in it, I had a squeeze of lime only. It was dry and mostly cabbage. The scallops were tasty but hardly any squash which was listed. The biggest downside was that there was overlapping music. We had modern jazz in the dining room but could hear the bar pop music just as loud. The two together were terrible."

  • "This was my second visit to Quay and I was surprised how much the restaurant had changed to a more bar type atmosphere. It was ok because I wanted to watch a sporting event and was able to do so very easily. Our food was good, but not great. Our server was very attentive and friendly. We were told the restaurant was changing its focus."

  • "When making the reservation, we were not told it was only brunch. The selections were minimal. The service was inept. The food (our party of six) agreed was virtually inedible and was not even prepared as stated on the very limited menu. We were extremely disappointed. "

  • "I went with my girlfriend, and we had a really good experience. There weren't a lot of people there (kind of gave us the feeling that this place would suck) but the food was very good. However, it is overpriced in terms of the amount of food you get for what you're paying for."

  • "A local reviewer gave it high marks and we were there because it was close to a theatre venue. The place is really a sports bar. We were sat at a table near the back bar looking out on the "quay." Water was forthcoming, but never any bread. (Server told my wife that she could have some "leftover baguettes" that they use with the mussels, if she liked. She didn't like.) The server was nice, but reminded us 2x that the menu was for "winter" and then didn't know what the soup of the day was. The dinner menu was very small: it seemed to be all pub food; the by-the-glass wine menu was an embarrassment. My soup du jour, a salmon chowder, came nearly cold; my seafood pasta had two shrimps. Wife's salmon was good. Wouldn't go again ever."

  • "The city was in the midst of the St. Patrick's Day insanity that is Chicago, but most of the inebriated celebrating was going on elsewhere. In fact, Quay was nowhere close to full when we arrived and was still sporting empty tables when we left. You never would have known that by the lack of service. Staff could not have been more pleasant or less competent. Seated promptly and welcomed warmly we then waited for at least 10 minutes for the offer of something from the bar. Sensing from the lack of attention that this would be our one chance, we ordered a bottle of wine and one other drink. The bottle of wine took another 10 minutes to arrive and still no drink. The meal was marred by incorrect orders and unbelievable slow service."

  • "This was recommeded by a concierge and were excited when we walked in. I loved the feel of the place. However, the food was just ok. I had the scallops and he had the short ribs. Not enough sides on the scallops, I liked the short ribs better. Coffee was bad and dessert not good, I would skip that course entirely there. Dissapppointing considering that we only had one night to splurge in Chicago."

  • "This place is right next to the space that house the River East Art Center, and down the street from AMC River East, so its great for pre/post movie dining. There are 3 separate dining areas to suit your mood. A large bar as you enter for pregaming before the movie, or relaxing after work drinks, a formal dining area for impressing your date, and an area in the back for private dining. I like the latter area best. In the summer time, it overlooks the water, and creates quite the impression for introverts like myself who want to recede into solitude while dining on bar food & grabbing a cocktail and still feeling connected to the extroverted characters in the background scene. The service has been great every time I go & drinks are potent!"

  • "My boyfriend and I had a dinner here and had a great time. I made a res. two days before and had no trouble getting a table despite it being Saturday night. I was surprised how big the inside is! There are several dining rooms and diff environments: vibrant bar area, intimate dining room, and at the back there is a gorgeous atrium right on the river with an additional bar. Our server was Jessica - she was great. Very friendly and had a great sense of humor. The cocktails, appetizers, and entrees we ordered were all delicious. The only draw back is the speed of service -- it did take quite a while for our drinks and food to come out -- the quality of both were great and worth the wait though. We will definitely come back to Quay!"

  • "Seven of us had dinner there. Service was good but the food was mediocre. My cocktail was not bad. I remember having some good sliders back in the summer, but the sweet & sour shrimp sliders I ordered last night was really not that great. The only dish I enjoyed was the Soup de Jour (sweet potato soup). House cut fries? Not good. Crab cake? Spicy and pricey. Blackened Shrimp Tacos? Wasn't excellent either."

  • "Went out for a relatively early dinner with a friend and, as it turns out, this was an excellent place - the mussels are perhaps the best either of us have had in Chicago and they did not put a food wrong all night. Interesting cocktail selection, strong wine and beer list, solid menu excellent prepared and served - easy to recommend!"

  • "We had a very enjoyable meal in an otherwise deserted dining room. Elegantly casual setting, very attentive and congenial service, satisfying food in substantial portions: ahi tuna, scallops, Amish chicken. When out of the wine we ordered, they offered a more expensive bottle at the same price. It was a snowy evening the day after New Year's, and the location (near Navy Pier) may appeal more to warm-weather diners, but it impressed us as a restaurant good in all seasons."

  • "We came into Chicago from Kansas City to do something different for Thanksgiving Day. Our reservation for Thanksgiving Dinner at Quay was a hit. They served the traditional meal with gourmet touches for a reasonable price. I cannot speak to their regular menu because this was a set meal, but all of it was prepared to perfection. I would go back to check out their regular fare based upon this meal. Also the wait staff was exceptionally kind and competent. Give Quay a try!"

  • "Great location and dining room but the food was only ok. My friends had the lamb shank and the pork chop. Both were overlooked and meat not very tender. I'm a vegetarian and had brussel sprouts and the eggplant and ricotta polenta. The polenta was not savory at all. Terrible. The pear salad on the other hand was delicious."

  • "My favorite aspect of Quay is that it is Seed to Plate. Everything's I've had here is great (the abundance of space and variety of venues is a great feature). Corn and lobster bisque, mac n cheese, kale & artichoke dip (could use more kale), truffle potato pizza (has a ton of cheese on it, which the menu omits), and my FAVORITE SIDE: kale and mushrooms. Steamed mussels are incredibly tender and a very light color, which I haven't seen before. The broth is fantastic, but we had to ask for bread for dipping...and received 3 pieces....really, you don't have more bread? Great drinks as well, overall great restaurant!"

  • "The food here was excellent. I had the blackened catfish and it was fabulous, as were the hush puppies. The polenta had too much kale for my taste. It's a nice downtown bar, close to Navy Pier, so a nice alternative to the tourist spots there. The service was attentive and helpful. The waitress knew the menu pretty well. I'd return if I'm in the area."

  • "I wish I could give this restaurant better rating, but the food is just not great. I left with the same sensation the first time I went there, only to corroborate my opinion the second time around. The service is really good, but I think ultimately you go back for the food. The most disappointing dish we had this time was the tartare duo: the salmon was OK, but the beef was plain bad, it seemed it had been washed with bleach, the color was not right; the flavor completely absent. All the main dishes we ordered leave you wanting more, especially for the price. In general, the dishes are completely overpriced, even for the location."

  • "Great looking place and menu but everything was pretty gross and over cooked. Burger was SUPER oily and greasy and the beef didn't taste that good. Chicken sausage didn't taste like a true cured sausage--just boiled hot dog. Desert tray came out frozen (literally, the cheesecake had icicles and the cookie was so hard had to use my back teeth--clearly keep in there pre-prepared for a week). On top of it all, place is pricey! Pricey is fine, but not for such poor service and quality."

  • "Very disappointing Sunday brunch. Pork Belly Chilaquiles and Amish Chicken Hash. In both cases, the featured protein was nowhere to be seen. On the Amish Chicken Hash, the “crispy hash cake” was a sort of fried potato cake that was flavored with chicken stock and some herbs. I pictured “chilaquiles” as sort of a huevos rancheros on tortiallas, but they were actually just a bowl of nachos. Instead of crispy tortillas, it was chips; I found a few bits of pulled pork and scrambled egg, but had to search for them. Also, the entire dish was warm in spots and cool in others and had soaked the chips through (not crispy at all), so had clearly been microwaved and probably made ahead."

  • "Loved this place the first time we were here, but very disappointed this time. One order of lamb chops was virtually raw under and the fish was very dry. We researched the online menu before our visit but when we got there we found a totally different menu, we asked our server about the difference and was told the website hasn't been updated in several months. Disappointing evening."

  • "Was excited to try Quay with my best friend for brunch. We met on Sunday at 1030a and were the only ones there the entire time. Still, it took the server quite a while to take our order (although he did bring water right away). It seemed promising and the McQuay breakfast looked great but it took at least 35 minutes to get--like I said, we were the only people there and our meal consisted of an English muffin, eggs, and bacon. I would not choose this place again. I can't imagine how long it would take with other customers!"
