Diner Reviews
  • "This was my first trip to Mississippi and specifically to Hattiesburg. I inquired of a few locals their favorite place to dine and Purple Parrot kept coming up. It was a pretty slow evening being mid week and with school out but the service was impeccable and the food was great. I started with the foie gras and a dozen gulf oysters. For my entree I had the shrimp and scallops served with truffled gnocchi. The seafood was cooked perfectly and all of the flavors melded together well. We split a white chocolate bread pudding that was different than what i expected (consistency was more cake like) but very good. The biggest surprise was the extensive wine list with gems like Martinelli, Siduri, Novy and other great CA wines."

  • "From New York and do not expect to have high quality food when traveling outside a major city. The food was excellent. Had the shrimp appetizer which was tasty and fresh. We shared the sirloin which we both thought was one of the best steaks we ever ate. Space is very pretty . Service was not great. I think their intention was not to rush us but servers rarely came over."

  • "A wonderful dining experience in every sense. Innovative menu; plenty of options to choose from; the wait staff was superb, mastering the fine line between over/under attentiveness and best of all my teenaged son LOVED the "funky" black truffle sauce on his steak...which was cooked to perfection. In fact, we both left the restaurant completely satisfied in every sense of the word. We look forward to our next visit!"

  • "As usual, the food and service were OUTSTANDING at our recent business meeting lunch. Our out-of-town guest requested the Purple Parrot for the lunch location."

  • "We enjoy the Purple Parrot experience routinely. Order the tasting menu and try some new things...unwind with the wine pairings. It's a great treat!"

  • "One more time we loved the food. I took my husband to dinner to celebrate his birthday. The food & service were excellent."

  • "This has been the best meal that we have had in Hattiesburg. "

  • "The service was absolutely wonderful. The food was fantastic and there wasn't any disturbances or any problems what so ever."

  • "Whenever we are in the Hattiesburg area, the Purple Parrot is a "must dine" stop. Whether for lunch or dinner, their menu always offers some favorites as well as few creative new fares with unique blends of flavors. They have an adjacent bar that is lively and has a broad variety of beers and drinks. The abiance of the restaurant is wonderful and never disturbed by the bar. Great food, relaxing atmoshphere!"

  • "Ate on a Saturday night. High expectations since we've always enjoyed our meals there. My Bloody Mary was weak. Chef's lagniappe was so small only one taste bud was needed. Gumbo was good as was the beet salad. Both diners had red fish and it was cooked perfectly. Dessert was a king cake/whipped cream confection, it was very good. Service was not up to the usual attention level. Had to ask for things - water, bread - that normally would be taken care of instantly. Only saw the waiter sporadically. I was a little slow choosing a wine, didn't see the waiter again until the main course was served, so they lost a wine sale. Background music was '50s/'60s jazz, was intrusive and was such a fast tempo that I felt like the goal was turnover."

  • "Being a native of Mississippi, the Purple Parrot has got to be one of, if not the best in the State. If you are anywhere near Hattisburg and you do not stop shame on you. Sweet Potato Blondie with homemade ice cream and caramel sauce the BEST!"

  • "We traveled to Hattiesburg for the Southern Miss Holiday Spectacular and planned the trip to facilitate a nice dinner beforehand. We selected the Purple Parrot for a number of reasons and were thrilled with the meal and service. Everything was top notch and we will look forward to another excuse to get on I-59 and visit again."

  • "The service was unbelievably slow and negligent, especially considering hardly anyone was there. We waited 20 mins for our first round of drinks, and to order food, and we were never offered second rounds of drinks with our meal or later. Disappointing service for what is supposed to be our city's nicest restaurant."

  • "The Purple Parrot was a pleasant surprise that I didn't expect to find in Hattiesburg. I had the sea scallops and my husband had the ribeye, accompanied by a bottle of pinot noir. Everything was fantastic, and the chocolate truffle layer cake was to die for. I would recommend this restaurant for date night or special occasions, but leave the kids with a sitter!"

  • "White chocolate bread pudding was worth the visit!!"

  • "There was only 3 tables with guest and we were there 2 hrs. My food was good (redfish) but the other 4 in party were disappointed. They had steak-one which was supposedly prime but was tough. Crescent City is much better."

  • "The service, food, and attention to detail are outstanding at this restaurant. While it is expensive, it is well worth visiting at least once. The only negative is that the menu's primary focus is seafood. So, the menu options are limited for those that do not want seafood."

  • "The entire experience was great. The wait staff, the food, and the atmosphere was all excellent. I had the Maui Maui and lump crab meat and my girlfriend had the scallops. We also shared a half dozen chargrilled oysters. The only slight complaint was that the oysters veryied in size a little too much."

  • "A wonderful dining experience that was well worth the price. The staff is knowledgeable and efficient. We will definitely eat there again."

  • "Outstanding service, outstanding wine list, outstanding food. Thoroughly enjoyed our evening. Would highly recommend the Purple Parrot."

  • "We had the chef's tasting menu with the wine pairings. It was great!! And we had a wonderful waiter and sommelier. Both were young men, easy to talk to."

  • "We stumbled on the Purple Parrot one day at lunch thinking that we were entering a nice sandwich shop. To our surprise, we found a first class restaurant in Hattiesburg, MS. We now schedule our trips so that we have an evening in Hattiesburg and dinner at the Purple Parrot. They have an amazing wine list and some of the best seafood on the gulf. You can always depend on an inovative meal with impecable service. We will be back."

  • "The meal was fantastic, but the service dropped the ball twice. I would go back, but will probably go to Table100 in Flowood because they have never dropped the ball service wise."

  • "The menu was great. The wine list and pairings, outstanding. We had decent service (the waiters could stand a little more wine education...we were sent the wrong vineyard on a wine). The only real problem of our night of 5 (2 couples and a child) was the duck. It was breast, and should have been med/rare to med.Iit was sent well done. Totally well. We asked about it, and they quickly cooked another. This time, rushed and RARE. everyone else was done by then. So I gave up. It was all left on the plate, and they could clearly see it wasn't eaten and no one said a word. All of the other apps and entres were fantastic! With a little education for the staff, this place can be a gem!"

  • "Took my wife and her sister there for her birthday. My wife is vegan and the staff not only accommodated her but went out of the way to find ways to make food she could eat and enjoy. While they did not have Muscato, her favorite wine, the manager introduced us to some new wines that we had never tried that she loved. It was a great experience."

  • "The service and appetizers were good but the entrees were not."

  • "A place of this quality in a town of this size is just unheard-of in the U.S. Brilliantly conceived, managed, cooked, and served. Multiple daily Gulf fish specials are incomparable anywhere in the region, and the standard menu has fabulous novelties such as spinalis, an absolute must-try for carnivores. Wine list, which would be impressive in New Orleans, seems impossible in Mississippi (just ask Tom Wolfe in Pass Christian). Come here any & every time you have a chance. Best in the State, including Oxford and Jackson."

  • "The Purple Parrot was not up to St. John's standards of old. Ihe portion sizes have been reduced and the service was cafe-ish. We also ate at Tabella and Creesent City, also St. John's restaurants during the same trip. They were outstanding."

  • "Always love the service. While the updated interior is visually attractive, we do think removing the unique booths that PP had was a mistake and interrupts the intimacy that diners could enjoy...especially couples. Now, tables feel expose to neighboring tables...and best we could tell no additional seating was gained with the new design...only a loss of privacy. Food great as always, of course...and the service!"

  • "Great as always - brought my daughters aged 11 and 8, they were treated like special grown-ups. I didn't check the kid-friendly box above mainly because I don't think this would be a place you should bring young children, but well behaved older kids like mine who enjoy "fancy" occasionally will fit right in and felt very welcome. Thanks again for a great meal!"

  • "The food and service was outstanding. We had the tasting menu with accompanying wines and everything was excellent. Many exquisite dishes one would expect to find in a NewYork five star restaurant or European eatery. Impeccable service. We will definitely dine there again."

  • "The PPC certainly changed my impression of what's available in Hattiesburg. The menu and quality was comparable to any "big city white table cloth" restaurant. When/if I am ever back in H'burg again, I shall make it my first stop--and I shall recommend it to friends"

  • "I booked this restaurant on a Sunday for my husband's birthday lunch. We were very pleased with the entire experience and will definitely visit this restaurant again. We were also very pleasantly surprised at the reasonableness of the cost of the Sunday Brunch."

  • "Everything was wonderful, except we weren't crazy about the striped marlin. It was rather bland. The duck, lamb and filet were outstanding as well as the deserts. I have travelled extensively, and Purple Parrot is consistantly one of my top 5 favorite restaurants in the U.S. and the best I've found in Mississippi. Great wait staff, easy reservations, great food and drinks. Couldn't ask for better."

  • "Great restaurant, recommended by Cat Cora!! It was awesome food and service. We went back to the Bar a second night and it was awesome as well. You have very good staff and an awesome bartender in Terry!!"
