Diner Reviews
  • "I had the steamed striped bass which was the cheapest cut and as thin as paper. The Aspen Martini was a tumbler full of ice. If on your drink menu you list a martini then serve a martini. The servers made my table feel as if we were more of an inconvenience than patrons overspending on lousy food. I would not recommend this place to anyone and I am still apologizing to the group that trusted me with Planning a great night of food and drink."

  • "We went there for a birthday celebration and were not disappointed. The waiter was attentive and friendly. The place is pricey but it was a special occasion. If just dropping by, could have some appetizers only. I had requested a special table and although it was busy, they did accommodate us."

  • "The one very notable dish is the dozen-oyster platter. It gives you 3 varieties and they all have different flavours. Service was so-so though."

  • "I know, it is oyster bar, but I love steaks there. Just a couple of months before we were in other high end restaurants (more expensive) but couldn't enjoy so well prepared meat as in here. Definitely favourite !"

  • "We always go back when visiting from Vancouver and Pure Spirits always delivers. The chopped salad, Parmesan fries and ravioli were SOOOO good."

  • "My wife and I dined here for our anniversary and we enjoyed our experience. Their oyster menu was the highlight as they had oysters from PEI, NB, BC and Washington. We enjoyed our main courses and the service was excellent. The setting and atmosphere is great - especially for the summertime. Overall we had a very good experience. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants to have a quiet meal in cool neighbourhood where you can relax and have some good seafood!"

  • "We arrived late because it was difficult to find the restaurant, the host was very understanding and held our table for us. The food was amazing. Best oysters I've had in town. Service was decent. Make sure you reserve a table during weekends because it gets pretty busy."

  • "This was the third time we dined at your establishment. We love the food and normally the service is very good. Two things we need to mention: First,we were placed at an open table even though I specifically requested a booth. I reserved online at least one week out and there was no indication on my confirmation indicating that would be a problem. We were celebrating an important event and it made us feel like we were eating at a cafeteria. Our waiter was nice however, he was absent and not very attentive to our table. We waited a long time between courses and had to track him down for the bill. If he was more attentive and efficient you would be better able to do more "turns" and give people the requests they make ie: a booth table."

  • "Pure Spirits was booked for a special date night, but it failed on the food. Ambience, service, and the main courses were all good. The restaurant itself is very comfortable, although we were seated right next to the kitchen even though there were many other tables free. Dessert in particular was a disappointment. I would recommend saving your dessert appetite and going across the lane to Soma."

  • "Great spot in the Distillery! Oyster selection was excellent and fresh. We ordered mostly appetizers and shared them as a group and the quantity was sufficient. Quality was above par. Perfectly cooked and seasoned. Tuna Tartar, grilled calamari, muscles were all fabulous. The cheese plate was lacking for the price that was paid. Small servings of fairly common cheeses. Overall, great dining experience. Will return."

  • "I came with my Mom for a pre-theatre Friday night dinner. I got the tuna tartar app, 10 oysters, and a Sapporo. The oysters were delicious. The tuna tartar app was a bit on the salty side, but still good. My mom got the wild bass entree, and she also liked it. I will try to go back next time and take advantage of one of the specials (cheaper oysters on Thursdays). The place is a bit pricey, I think it is most ideal for special occasions. I think the menu could be improved by adding sorbets/ice creams, in fruity flavours. we wanted to get dessert - but none of the desserts really jumped out and made us want to order them! the only ice cream option was a very decadent sounding choco-vanilla sundae with a lot of rich toppings & sauces"

  • "Love coming back here! Menu is great, oysters are always fresh. Hubby loves the beer very much too. Service is very attentativ. Can't wait to come back to Toronto once it is warmer and enjoy the al fresco dining."

  • "We were warned several times by one person who had a bad experience with the service at Pure Spirits. Well that's just one person right? We must have waited a good 45 minutes until I caught our waiters eyes and asked about our meal...he said THEY FORGOT ABOUT OUR ORDER!!!!!!, my blood was boiling and our meal later came with a bonus dessert, no apology. I was laughing sarcastically as I was thinking about the warnings that we had not to go. Confirmed, we enjoyed our experience but will probably not be back to this restaurant. For the price, I expect better service, way better service."

  • "If you like oysters, this is a good place to eat. The outside dining makes the restuarant. The distillery district is always a great place to eat, walk, shop, enjoy. Parking is a bit expensive (1.75/ half hour) but the food and location soften the cost."

  • "Guess I shouldn't have thought to order a French beef stew in a restaurant specializing in fish, particularly oysters. However, one does expect that when an item is on the menu, it will be cooked as expected. Not so...tasted burnt, with a healthy helping of fishy tasting rice accompanying...not what I'd expected. The server did report to the manager...who offered a replacement...short of time, so asked for the clam chowder...which I expected to be special given the whole fish deal...again, not so...thick, gloppy, salty...pretty well inedible! My sister ordered the fish special...fluke?...tasty, but having been expecting PARSNIP puree, was surprised to see a sea of green...PARSLEY puree...who knew?? Overall, extremely disappointing!!"

  • "Honestly the hostest was awful. She almost ruined the whole night. We had a reservation and the hostest made us wait 15 min. Without giving us a seat at the bar or any reason why we needed to wait so long. There were about 15 tables free and she made us wait with a snob look on her face. Luckily our server was amazing."

  • "Went for a romantic v-day dinner. Everything was perfect, they definitely know how to set their customers. We had the lobster pasta and the black cod paella. Both were great!"

  • "It's too bad the service is so poor at this restaurant, the food's pretty good. We waited a fair time just to be seated. Then we waited 1 hour and 10 minutes for our food. During that time we had to ask the waiter for a cocktail menu and although he promised one, it never materialized. We tracked down a hostess, she gave us one. Then we waited patiently to place our drink order. Our waiter never asked us. After at least 20 minutes we tracked down the same hostess - she ordered our drinks. After more then 45 minutes some of us wanted another drink. No one asked us if we cared for another. So we didn't get one. Our waiter walked by our table many, many, MANY times as restaurant is narrow. Not ONCE did he check in with us."
    Dined on 2/17/2014
  • "Service was slow, although they were very busy so I do sympathize. However, the food was just average. Drinks were great, appetizers were good, main meal was poor. My meal had unbalanced flavor and fish not well cooked. My husbands lobster was below expectations. I will say the deserts were fantastic."
    Dined on 2/15/2014
  • "Tables are way too close to each other, could barely hear my dining companion. Ahi Tuna Tartare tasted only ginger, nothing else, taro root chips tasted stale. Lobster pasta contained only small pieces of lobster (not worthy of being called chunks) Place is advertised as an oyster bar, no mentions of the oysters by our waiter that were available that night and written on black board."

  • "My wife and I dined at Pure Spirits for the first time and were quite pleased. The calamari / tempura and smoked octopus appetizers were a very pleasant surprise; the main dishes were very hot (which is great - especially for seafood) and had a modern twist; and the cocktails were spot-on. Well done!"

  • "Great experience with good friends. Met an old friend who works as the Sous Chef and received even more of an excellent service and evening together. Loved the oysters. Best in the city!"

  • "Just wish we could have had a booth as the stand alone tables were a little tight and the chairs were not the most comfortable. Overall, we loved the restaurant and had a great experience."

  • "Our meal at Pure Spirits was outstanding!! The positives include the amazing soup, delicious fries and battered fish, and delicious apple crumble dessert. I only have one negative. It was a cold day and we arrived a little after 12 for a 12:30 reservation. We live an hour and a half from Toronto, so gauging the time of arrival was difficult. When we got there the sign said that the restaurant opened at 11:30am so we went to go inside but the doors were locked. There were servers inside who could clearly see that we wanted in, but continued to ignore us. I am a server and have been for a few years and my suggestion to Pure Spirits is to retrain your staff on customer experience."

  • "This was the first time my friend and I took part in Winterlicious. We found out about Pure Spirits online based off their menu and were not disappointed! The restaurant was gorgeous and the service was great! We knew what to order but were so impressed of the quality of our food when it arrived. It was delicious and presented in such a way that didn't make us feel like our meals were just a “packaged deal”. Instead we had a great dining experience! Our server was also great giving us input of what wine to order that would complement our meals. I know this is typical but she went through the whole menu with us with patience because we did ask a lot of questions. I definitely plan on coming back again to check out other items off the menu."

  • "I've been here several times and always very satisfied with the food. Winterlicious was just "OK" for me. My spouse had the ravioli which was wonderful but the fish and chips were disappointing. Lots of batter, little bit of fish and mushy fries. Appetizers and desserts were very good though. I'd recommend going here when in the Distillery District and I'll definitely w return but will continue to order from regular menu."

  • "Went here for Winterlicious, the restaurant was very nice and the staff quite friendly. The food was ok, some of it arrived cold and the taste was a bit bland."
    Dined on 2/8/2014
  • "Our waiter never introduced himself to our table. We thought he was the bus boy as he filled our water glasses without a word, then returned to take our dinner orders? Apparently they take your drink order and dinner order at the same time??? We were not impressed."
    Dined on 2/8/2014
  • "We have come back several times to Pure Spirits, we are big fans. We love love love the oysters and lobster papardelle dish. This time we were both slightly disapointed in the amount of lobster in the dish, very little, as compared with our previous experiences."

  • "Server messed up my winterlicious order menu, wanted onion soup but brought me salad instead thought it was cause he knew we wanted to split the food, but no never came. Server was an African American decent that's bald with being tall and skinny. I ordered wine too but asked for white wine on the menu and showed me red instead"

  • "Wonderful place to diner before seeing a play (Alumnae Theatre just up the street) - which we did. Service (which is an integral part of the ambiance) was engaging and attentive, and the food was wonderful. Also the sound-track/muzac was nice and at an appreciatedly low level so conversing amongst ourselves was not an exercise in shouting and mime. And the location is great. Thanks for a wonderful part of a great evening."

  • "I have been to Pure Spirits several times for both dinner and lunch. Always so delicious, along with great service. Very nice patio for Summer dining and cozy restaurant for Winterlicious. Planning to go with a group on a Monday night for the Mussel special and taste-test the Distillery District made saki selection."

  • "Despite booking for winterlicious, and telling our server 3 times that we would select from the winterlicious menu, he continuously pushed other items to us and was obnoxious. Management was nice and the ambiance in the restaurant was nice, playing jazz and blues music, but i wasn't happy with the service or the quality of the food. The portions were very small and the dessert tasted like it was pre-packaged."
