Diner Reviews
  • "This place is great to sit on their patio, in the middle of the Distillery, and just people watch. Their food is great, I wouldn't say super creative, but it is very tasty. We went for summerlicious, so of course the price was reasonable. However, their regular menu seems like average pricing (not like the ridiculous Tappo next door)!"

  • "had a super time, albeit with 8 women (some being really quite oTT high maintenance) the staff remained stoic and lovely and very efficient. Thank you very much! Your Albarino on your menu was quite the hit - several of us have sourced it out at LCBO - tell your wine rep!"

  • "We waited 90min for our food then decided to leave - we would not recommend this place"

  • "The atmosphere was not unwelcoming but I didn't feel that it was welcoming either. Food took too long, esp for fish and chips and overcooked, so my lunch was hurried. The waiter was pleasant enough. My experience wasn't good enough to recommend to others but neither so bad that I would steer people away. May be it was an off day for everyone involved."

  • "A very solid choice in the distillery district. Service was top notch and very professional. Timing was perfect as we were seeing two shows at Soulpepper and we got out in time for the second with no problems at all. Will definitely go back."

  • "Our experience at Pure Spirits was excellent. It is truly a neighbourhood gem. Our server was superb. She was professional and most accommodating. We let her know that we were attending the theatre at 8 p.m. She governed the service accordingly. The food was exceptional. The patio is fabulous and great for people watching. There is also adequate space between the tables. I will definitely be returning this summer."

  • "We went during Bacardi festival. The line was massive but we has reservations so that don't matter in terms of getting in. Our food was really good! We defiantly loved it. The service was slow but I think we just had a waiter that was having an off day....we're all entitled to that. He tried his best but he took too long to see us (waited 25 min for a slice of cake and 20 min for him to greet us)"

  • "Appears to be a kitchen problem here. Good wait staff but unusually long times for food delivery. Pre-theatre rush is a problem they haven't solved. Other places have. Food isn't good enough to offset the consistent service shortfall-- have been here at least 10 times. Finally decided to record my disappointment."

  • "Food is good, service better. A good spot for pre-theatre dining"

  • "Limited selection of oysters (the recommended special was not very good). We waited over an hour to get our main dishes. The mussels in my linguine had a funky taste and my husband's paella had a soury kick to it. The kids' meals however were brought out promptly and they enjoyed it. The server was really kind and apologetic about the wait. Didn't want to send the food back and wait another hour. Disappointed with the quality. Maybe our last visit there - too bad - I really liked this place in the past."

  • "If you want fish or seafood this is the place to go - everything was delicious from apps to mains. Great oyster selection. Beat dish we had was the pappardelle with lobster and mushrooms."
    Dined on 7/2/2014
  • "Tried the bucket o'fish last time and the calamari most recently; there's way too much breading and not enough fishy goodness. Also the calimari were tough. I will steer clear next time. The chop salad remains a favorite, and we love the fries. Service is good; love the patio!"

  • "We lingered over a wonderful meal on the outdoor patio, soaking in the ambience of the District, and thinking we'd be back. Food was just right for the occasion. Have already been back once for a drink while wandering in the area."
    Dined on 6/28/2014
  • "It's probably our 4th time going and every time it is the same - appetizers (including oysters) are VERY good but the main is just "good". the service continues to be outstanding and the ambiance (both indoors and out) are lovely. Will be back again."

  • "Had an opportunity to be downtown and was able to book a table even though it was pride week. Great time and food."
    Dined on 6/28/2014
  • "We ordered 9 oz wine but were charged 12oz on the bill. We were not asked if we wanted dessert/tea/coffee and were brought the bill instead. Felt like they were rushing us to get the table filled for new customers. Food was good but the overall experience was far from outstanding."

  • "Before seeing a show at Soulpepper, it was an ideal spot to sit outside, share a bottle of wine, and share a few smaller dishes. Fried calamari is prepared in a lightly fried tempura style that was less greasy than usual and very tasty. The oysters were good. And the service was excellent."
    Dined on 6/27/2014
  • "Oysters are great and ALL of the appetizers I've had are great, but the mains seem to fall just slightly flat of that. I've had the salmon, tuna and the halibut and I'd say the same across all. Maybe they taste a little frozen - not sure. The service, ambiance and the appetizers keep me coming back though!!"

  • "We had a wonderful lunch here. Lovely big patio, lots of umbrellas for shade. Beautiful pots of flowers. Great summer spot. Fresh oysters were delicious. Great service too!"

  • "We had a great lunch - my dining partner had the mussels which were plentiful and and, according to him, very delightful. I had an excellent lamb sandwich. The menu has a good variety of items which makes it easy to recommend this restaurant to others. There is a good sized patio dining area with lots of shade area. Service was a bit slow to start, but vastly improved once there was someone available to attend to us."

  • "Hi I got a call to confirm reservation yet when I called back they had no record of it. I did get a confirmation by email. Luckily I was able to make another reservation with the restaurant."

  • "Great little place. Menu was limited but then again who wants so many choices where it would be difficult to decide. Many seafood dishes but very little chicken or beef. Love the gluten free options that are clearly indicated. Service was good but a little slow at times. Server was friendly, pleasant and polite. All servers were neatly dresses in clean and wrinkle free uniforms. Restaurant was clean and ready for business. Booth seating was comfortable enough however the centre seating had metal chairs that did not appear comfortable. Had a good visit."

  • "I was worried about poor service and average food, but was pleasantly surprised. The food was great, service was excellent!. Would recommend getting a booth inside since the tables outside were metal and seemed uncomfortable to sit on and it was cool that evening. Had the oysters and BC halibut, very good. would recommend this place."

  • "I ended up going to Pure Spirits two nights in a row and I liked the ambiance (hence going there twice). The location is great, right in the heart of the Distillery District and the staff were also good. However, I found the dining experience inconsistent. On the first night, we were not offered bread before dinner, but were offered it on the second night. Both nights our table ordered the sweet potato fries. On the first night, I had to ask for aioli for dipping, but on the second night our order came with a spicy aioli. Despite, the inconsistency, I would go back as overall we had a good experience."

  • "Not worth the money. And if i recommended anyone, i would NOT recommend them to get the steak. to thin and rubbery"

  • "our dinner was delicious....our service sucked!! but will definitely head back ....then we can see if rest of the wait staff is the same"

  • "expected more. Tasted like I was eating everything with Mayo. The bread basket that I had to ask for, got two bus, was the best of the meal."

  • "Brought my wife out for a nice dinner, made reservations for a booth, was a bit disappointed when we were initially seated at very uncomfortable metallic chairs and table next to a large group. The greeter came back, apologized and moved us to a nicer table... good service ! We like trying different recipes and this place did not disappoint, the food was great. Our waiter was very informative and the service was good. We will go back... but get rid of those metallic tables !!"

  • "We have been going to Pure Spirits about once a month for 5+ years. It is convenient for our theatre nights at Soulpepper. It has always been an uneven experience with some nights quite good and many less favourable. This week was one of the worst. Their wine selection is limited. We chose a bottle and after 10 minutes were told it was not available. So we chose another bottle and 10 minutes later it was also not available. One of our dishes was cold and the waiter did not come to ask us how our meal was until 10-15 minutes after it was served. Although they compt the one entree we left feeling a need to find an alternate destination for our next theatre stop. "

  • "The restaurant supposedly didn't have what I ordered and didn't give me any substitutions. Even though 10 minutes later several tables received the order that I had asked for after I received my order. Also, it took about an hour to receive my main meal from time of ordering and about 40 minutes to receive a half a dozen order of oysters. Service was lacking and when I wanted to speak to someone they could care less. They just shrugged their shoulders. Don't sit in the middle tables as you will be constantly be knocked by servers. Not their fault , they hardly have any room to maneouver. I was very disappointed with the service and lack of respect for a diners opinion. "

  • "Whew, good thing we had a reservation, as they line up to get a table. Lots of waitstaff hustling between tables and very loud; made it seem frantic. Our waiter initially took care of us: got our drinks, took our orders, brought us delicious bread, then it took a while for our dinners to come. Once he came & said they were coming right up, but then we saw him setting tables, talking to the bar staff, etc. Our entrees were eventually brought to us by another server. Husband had the paella: black cod & squid in a slightly spicy/smoky tomatoey rice. I had the salmon done Mediterranean style with 3 types of olives, sliced sweet onions with a dollop of mashed potatoes. Very good. We skipped dessert, figuring it would take too long. "

  • "My husband I live in the neighbourhood, and went here for his birthday dinner because we love oysters. Dinner for two with a bottle of wine and an appetizer (but not dessert) was nearly $200 after tax and tip. Our meals were good, but uninventive. The service was polite and efficient, but didn't blow me away. For the same amount of money, I would choose somewhere else. "

  • "I reserved a table for four of us to get reacquainted, and I must say that I was a bit skeptical about the service before going there after I read some of the reviews, however our waiter was extremely pleasant and attentive, and the food was also quite good. I'll definitely go back another time."

  • "the location is good and the decor is very cool, fits into distillery district well. the service was acceptable and the food was just fine. I had a dozen oysters that were poorly shucked (2 still attached to shell and too many bits of shell fragment in oyster). I had mussels that were good, the broth was thin and not much flavour. I had to order and pay for bread as the Mussels did not come with a spoon nor any bread to sop up the broth. No complaints, it was fine but not very good nor impressive. "

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our pre-theater meal at Pure Spirits. Although too cold to use the spacious patio the restaurant had a cozy feel created by decor and especially the service. Portions were well plated and yummy. Oysters fantastic! We will be back for sure. "

  • "We took my mom out to Pure Spirits for a late lunch on Mothers Day, and she absolutely loved it... as did my siblings and I. The servers were extremely attentive, friendly, and very efficient. The seafood was very fresh and flavorful; we ordered their B.C salmon, oysters, mussels, and it was all so very fresh and delicious. My little sister ordered the Mac 'N Cheese with smoked salmon and seafood and it was SOO good! We'll definitely be going back there again soon. Being located in Toronto's Distillery District just makes it that much more appealing and certainly a very enjoyable experience all around. "

  • "The food as always was amazing. Service was fast and well coordinated, lacking in charm and charisma. I chose Pure Spirits, as I was taking clients from Egypt who had never been to Canada before and choice of seafood and fish was required. They were very impressed by the atmosphere and the food. Always a good idea to put your clients on a plane to go home with a warm belly full of good food and a lasting great experience. Only down fall is the price vs the portion size. Their prices are a bit steep. Almost $100 per person with no alcohol _ ouch! Keep making fabulous food though!"
