Diner Reviews
  • "We had mutually decided on this place a while back. The menu items seemed interesting and a friend said the food was worth the trip. The outdoor garden was lovely until it started to drizzle but the waitress was very attentive and very helpful. We both chose dishes that were flavorful, delectable, and lovely. The indoor space was a little loud and it made listening to my partner very difficult. We both decided we would go back and in the end decided it was a perfect choice for the 2nd outing together."

  • "I had been trying to try this restaurant for a long time, normally when that happens I end up having very high expectations with the possibility of being disappointed. THIS WAS NOT THE CASE! We went there for Brunch on a Sunday, sat in the garden, everybody was extremely pleasant and helpful with recommendations, we had 4 dishes to share and they were all delicious. Highly recommend the brunch muffins, small but SUPER tasty and rich :)! Will definitely be coming back."

  • "Although expensive, the food is pretty good and some dishes are quite innovative. But, the noise level is almost unbearable. Must be due to low celilings."

  • "I have been a vegetarian for 16 years and Pure Food and Wine is an absolute gem. My husband, who is not a vegetarian, also thought it was phenomenal. The food is extremely creative and so unexpected. We selected the 5-course tasting menu which is by far the way to go. I can't wait to go back again."

  • "they took us through the kitchen.... very goodfellas like..... very romantic. The food is hands down the best vegan, raw , organic food in the nycity. Thank you for a memorable time!"

  • "We liked the food and found it surprisingly filling"

  • "I find it hard to find good vegan food that focuses on plant-based food vs. trying to simply recreate non-vegan product, e.g. fake chicken, burgers, etc and/or is loaded with odd ingredients and lots of sodium. Pure Food and Wine had wonderful, veggie-based food that highlighted the plant-based ingredients and tasted refreshingly natural. I felt like I was paying a premium price to know that my food was vegan vs. some vegetarian/vegan alternatives elsewhere, but it was a nice alternative to what I can typically find so happy to pay."

  • "My boyfriend and I have been here once in the summer and then again for Valentine's day this year. In the summer, we were able to sit outside in the beautiful back patio (no street view) with trees and twinkling lights hanging above us. Unfortunately in the winter, that is not an option. Inside seating is still nice, though. The food comes in small portions but is surprisingly filling. I would categorize this as an upscale raw vegan restaurant that is very good for any special occasions. Definitely recommended."

  • "After reading reviews of this restaurant it became a must on our long weekend to New York from York in the North of England. We were not disappointed! The menu was amazing and the wine list impressive and delicious! I'd recommend it to anyone visiting NYC and will definitely be coming back when I return to NYC."

  • "Still one of my favorite vegan restaurants in the city - never disappoints."

  • "When I first went to Pure Food and Wine a couple of years ago, I wasn't that excited by the food. I came back because of a Groupon deal and I was so glad I did! In the time between that visit and this one, the food and service has improved greatly, and I now would call Pure Food and Wine one of the better vegan restaurants in Manhattan. The food is delicious and the service was attentive and friendly. My one criticism is the close-quarters dining with other people. I had to nudge my neigh bouts' table over to get out to the bathroom, which felt a little awkward. This is not atypical of dining in the city, but still counted against my overall experience."

  • "I heard all about this restaurant for a few years. As soon as we got there the noise level was unbearable. This lady had an obnoxious loud laugh.Everybody else was talking at a higher than normal level. Later I realize there was a bridal or baby shower in the back.We ordered our food. They were out of both dishes.I ordered sushi. It was ok. The person with me got the portabella sandwich. I nearly died when I saw the size of the meal. It was half the size of his palm. There was plenty of lettuce crowding the plate,The service was very good despite the unfavorable meal. I will try the restaurant again. Maybe it was a bad day for the restaurant and me.I"

  • "Tried and true, creative and beautifully presented dishes. Only dissapointment is over chilled pre-pressed juices"

  • "This is an incredibly fine restaurant. It doesn't matter if you are vegan, gluten-free, oriented towards organic or none of the above - the food is impeccably prepared and the tastes are outstanding. This is just great food!"

  • "This was an amazing dining experience. Every bite was delicious. I practically licked my plate clean! I am very picky when it comes to the standards of food. I cook, but I am no chef. When I go out to a pricey meal I want it to be much better than what I can cook. Pure Food and Wine exceeded my every expectation. I have never had Raw food and I am very pleased and will be back."

  • "whenever i come to new york and time permits i love to have dinner at 'pure food and wine' i own the cookbook and have made many dinners from the book coming to the restaurant, especially with friends gives me and them a chance to experience 'raw food' at its best and leave us all…always delighted!"

  • "The menu is always inventive and delicious. Cant wait to try the brunch menu. I would also highly recommend the drinks, as all were inventive and delicious as well."

  • "I stopped in for lunch, but rather than getting one of the prix fixe choices (which are all excellent), I struck out on my own, at least in terms of dessert. The raw tortilla wraps made of sundried tomato and sesame seeds were, as usual, mindblowing in terms of execution. The cashew milk "sour cream" was a nice touch to the guacamole-stuffed tortillas. I finished with a "moonpie" which turned out to be two layers of chocolate brownie (we're still talking raw foods, here!) sandwiching a vanilla "cream" layer, and then all enrobed in chocolate, so essentially a chocolate brownie/vanilla truffle. Delicious. I'm not even vegetarian, let alone vegan, but I love coming here for the wow factor. I don't repeat restaurants, but this one I do."

  • "the noise level was so high that we had to literally scream to hear each other! the food was good, but the noise ruined any pleasure of it. I ended up with a sore throat and a headache at the end of the evening."

  • "This restaurant is ok, but the food is nowhere near as good as other raw food restaurants. It's pricy, tables close together and too limited choices on the menu. There are so many other places in the neighborhood that are much better."

  • "Excellent service and fun energetic ambience with great music. The food was a mixed bag however. The sake based cocktails were marvellous, the main courses were good and bad. The curried veg suited being served at room temperature however the portabello mushroom dish did not. The latter also came with a tasteless horseradish cream and an overpowering smoky bbq sauce - it was all kinds of wrong! Such a shame as there were many plusses to our evening but if the main course is no good then no amount of good service can make up for it. We had not realised that the ethos was to serve food raw and cold, knowing this beforehand might have helped adjust our expectations (and choice of restaurant on such a cold night!)."

  • "There's no way around it. If you like a young, attractive and energetic milieu, and unbelievable 'pure' food and wine, and staff/servers with intriguing personality and character, this is the place. And so accommodating for such an 'in-demand' place. as an example, my two colleagues couldn't make our reservation, so I contacted an old friend, and met at the bar. We wound up staying there and sharing some plates at the bar, and it was absolutely no fuss with the staff. No problem with changing the plan. That is not often the case at other places in the city I have been in."

  • "Well the setting was impressive, nice ambiance. Tables are tightly placed. I don't mind paying high prices for good food, but with this particular restaurant please make sure you are not hungry because you will leave dissatisfied. The food is for show and art, not to fulfill. The prices are ridiculous for the amount of food that is served. I ordered curried vegetables and it was basically a baby portion of bland cauliflower with this hard "quinoa shell" to dip. Maybe that's how rich folks eat, but I rather more bang for my buck."

  • "Amazing, The food is fresh vegan fare. Delish an amazing. I highly recommend."

  • "Some dishes are a bit pricey for the size of serving; for example, $17 for what turned out to be a single, very small crepe appetizer was an unpleasant surprise. Food was tasty, service was attentive without being over-bearing. I would recommend to a friend with the caveat that they go for the experience of new flavors and not expect generous portions."

  • "I have been a fan of this restaurant for years. It is the best raw vegan food anywhere. It is the best food anywhere. Period. All organic."

  • "This place always feels new and exciting. The food never disappoints and warm, professional service is on a high level. The Cornbread pudding is a wonderful dessert-like appetizer. The Cauliflower Polenta and the Hen of the Woods are great main courses. The Classic Sundae is a five star dessert. This is the restaurant where I take guests who are stunned to find they really like the place even though there is no meat, fish, dairy or eggs."

  • "amazing amazing food! who knew vegetables could be so tasty in so many different ways! skeptical at first, but at first taste realized each bite was worth every penny. we ordered philly roll, pumpkin apple crepe(least fav. was looking for more textures besides mushy, soft apples, pumpkin and crepe), red watercress salad (phenomenal presentation, well balanced flavors), zucchini lasagna (nice, creative, refreshing), portabella mushroom (nice dish and flavors that helps retain the meatyness of the main ingredient), lettuce rolls (this is on the takeaway menu and my favorite dish from PF&W. it's so incredibly filling, rich and delicious- a must try!)"

  • "the food was very impressive, and i am an avid meat eater. never had raw vegan before, and the sundae was probably the best i've ever had. worth the splurge."

  • "Had the warm mulled wine (stronger than I expected but nice). We shared the food family style so that we could taste more items- started with the Philly rolls (sushi rolls) which were very good - it had cashew cream and the dipping sauce was also perfectly balanced. Entrees were the lasagna and hen of the woods (takeoff on a taco). The former was excellent especially the tartness provided by the sundried tomato paste and I would definitely try again, while the latter was ok. Desert was Rosemary olive oil cake and was to die for. We practically licked the plate clean. Overall enjoyed our dinner and service was good too - waitstaff was attentive without hovering and patiently explained the dishes. I would recommend this place."

  • "It was our second time here and was incredible as always. We went for a belated Valentine's day dinner and got the tasting menu. The food was excellent and the service was timely, but not too fast for such a large meal."

  • "I was hesitant about the raw vegan menu, but was willing to give it a try. As a meat-lover I expected to "settle" for something, but that was not the case. I was actually torn between a number of items on the menu, because everything sounded so good. My girlfriend and I split the sushi rolls to start which were very good and worth trying. She the portabella and hemp seed burger and loved it. I had the tortilla wraps, which were a little hard to eat and not exactly what I thought I was getting—but i was by no means unhappy, they were still good. If you are considering this restaurant, it's worth going at least once, just for the experience. We will, however, definitely be going back."

  • "Delicious food - and healthy too. The chips and guacamole are creamy and delicious. The salads are huge! I had the kale and radicchio salad and although it had quite an olive oil flavor, it was delicious and filling. Friends had the lasagna, veggie spring rolls, portobello burger. Everyone enjoyed their dishes. For dessert we shared the mallomar - yummy! Small, but a taste was all we needed. I love getting full on healthy food!"
