  • "We were looking for a nice (but not $$$) place to go with kids. I was intrigued by the fact that they had a vegan menu as well has items to please the meat eaters. The peanut stew and the bread and butter app were very good. I had the vegan ravioli and that was not good. I think the rest of my family had beef and chicken dishes. Very pleasing to the eye and tasted good but not great - I was expecting more. The s'more dessert was great but they need to have a gelato option for younger diners. My 8 yr old was not going to eat avocado jalapeno gelato! One other thing, the lighting would change color every few minutes, pink, blue, green. I understand trying to be innovative but this was kind of bothersome. Service was nice & and attentive."

  • "We found this restaurant on Open Table. I had the chef special pork chops with apricot glaze, maple/bacon Brussels spouts and rosemary fingerling potatoes. My wife had the shrimp corn chowder and the wedge salad. We finished the meal with the "s'more" desert and glasses of port. The food was amazing, it had a great view of public square and while it was cold that day, when the outside seating is open it would be a great location. It is more open bright energetic than a quiet romantic restaurant - open high ceilings. I highly recommend."

  • "Excellent food for the price - most dinners are under $30 and you'll be hard pressed to find better food for that price elsewhere downtown. Menu appears to change and rotate through the year which is a good indication this chef likes to design dishes. I'd rate the food 4 to 4.5 stars but considering the dollar value it makes it a great place. This isn't a quiet place - conversation noise level is high - but not overly loud to the point you have almost shout. Service was fantastic and we were attended to frequently but not obtrusively."

  • "Went to Pura Vida with a work group for lunch; it was fantastic as always! The peanut stew is always a hit; and the salad special of the day with grilled salmon and an almond brittle was excellent. The brittle was a great replacement to a traditional crouton. Keep up the great work!"

  • "Enjoyed the dinner; exceeded our expectations. Food was excellent, perfectly prepared fish, interesting and flavorful sauces. Only downsides, it took awhile to get the bill handled, and providing some bread for the table would be nice. The place is loud; don't expect a quiet little corner for conversation."

  • "We dined before a concert at the Q and the restaurant was full. The food was fantastic. Chef does an excellent job of pairing complimentary tastes to make a meal memorable. The bibb wedge salad with the house made bacon is the best wedge salad i ever had. That night they had heirloom pork chops that were locally sourced, they were perfectly cooked to the temperature i asked and the slightly sweet fruity sauce made them special. The only reason we didn't give the service 5 stars was the bar service was relatively slow (but in all fairness the restaurant was packed)."

  • "Pura Vida has a creative menu and at two visits, one lunch and one dinner, everything I tried was delicious. The African peanut stew is really tasty. Also the vegetarian pot pie was very good. My date had a lamb special that he said was excellent---best meal he'd had in a long time. It's not a vegetarian restaurant, but they have many vegan and vegetarian options-even a separate vegetarian menu. The decor is simple and modern. The front is all glass windows, overlooking Public Square with outdoor seating for warmer months. Overall a great place that I'll definitely visit again."

  • "Went for lunch for the second time. The only difficulty we had was in deciding what to order. The menu is filled with delicious sounding, imaginative choices. So far we're 2 for 2. I'm a vegetarian and typically, finding something on a menu is easy because it's either a salad or one of a few veggie friendly selections. In addition to the great regular menu, there is a vegetarian/vegan menu that is bigger/better than any I've seen. Oh, and every meal we've had so far was extraordinary."

  • "I love this restaurant! Great location on Public Square. Can't wait to visit in spring or summer when outdoor dining is an option. Large number of vegetarian & vegan options. The food and service were excellent and the wait staff was very knowledgeable. The African peanut stew is outstanding. My wife and I have eaten here three times and she has ordered it every time for an appetizer. The menu changes with the seasons so there are always new menu items to try. The crispy polenta was very tasty and the presentation very artistic. The vegan big Mac came to the table plated in a similar box as it's namesake version. Nice touch! The dining room ambience is very warm, hip and inviting. Definitely on the top of my downtown go-to list!"

  • "As a vegetarian I am not used to being overwhelmed with options when I go out to eat. At Pura Vida I had to ask the waitress to give me another minute while I pondered my options. We started with the chickpea jar which I would recommend to everyone. The hummus was that lovely smooth texture as opposed to grainy. We did have to ask for more bread (which we promptly received). Dessert was chocolate trifle. And here was my biggest issue with the meal. Cake served in a small jar. Raspberry sauce served outside the jar. Difficult to combine the two. Overall a lovely meal. Would go back."

  • "I enjoy hosting lunch meetings at Pura Vida. Parking can be a bit of an effort in challenging weather, but any other time, it is simply a nice walk to a wonderful destination. The lady at the door is warm and inviting. The service is prompt and interested in their diners' culinary experience. Brandt has something special here. The food is well seasoned without masking the essence of the item being seasoned. The atmosphere is energetic and when I leave, I am left wondering when I can schedule my next lunch meeting there."

  • "Besides a delicious conventional menu, PV has a vegetarian menu to die for. And veggie or carnivore, the African Peanut soup gets raves all around. Dish presentations are original in many cases. Service was excellent. Valet parking just feet East on Euclid makes access to PV's Public Square location quick even in the nastiest of weather. The parking valets are very accommodating, too."

  • "While our server was knowledgable and polite, it seemed that she was the only server working the 7 occupied tables. Service was kinda slow. The menu was sometimes difficult to understand. Example: it was advertised as vegan chocolate cake but then it also said chocolate milkshake. So what is it? Cake or a milkshake? None us us really loved our main course or the dessert."

  • "My boyfriend and I went to Pura Vida during Downtown Restaurant Week. We were greatly pleased. The ambiance is cool and eclectic. The service was fast, friendly, and helpful as we asked for recommendations on which appetizer to choose. My boyfriend told our server to surprise him with the dessert choice. She gave him the s'more hand pie and he was not disappointed in the least. I ate from the vegan menu and he the regular. The African Peanut Soup was incredible! As was the pot pie. My dessert was the vegan chocolate cake and milkshake. My date enjoyed his Ohio chicken and corn chowder. The portions were the perfect size. Food was hot and exquisitely presented, not to mention delectable. We will be coming here again!"

  • "A large group of us when to Pura Vida for lunch. The atmosphere was great and the food, as always, was phenominal! This is a great location since it's pretty much "across the street" from our place of business. It was a very cold and windy day, so it was nice to be able to stay close to work. The only negative I would say is, it was a bit cold inside that day. However, it was very cold outside and we were seated by the windows, so it's understandable that it was cold where we were seated. We've had the server we had that day before. He's very knowledeable about the selections and always has great recommendations. I will always recommend Pura Vida to anyone asking about places to go for lunch and even dinner."

  • "We had dinner at Pura Vida for downtown Restaurant Week, so they had a special menu. Well, two special menus -- a regular one, and a vegan/vegetarian one. I can't complain about anything we had -- I really enjoyed my corn and shrimp chowder, and my husband had the peanut stew which was also very flavorful. We both thought the best thing we ate was the tomato and corn spoon bread that came with my salmon. Overall it was a satisfying meal, and if we are downtown and need a place to eat I would suggest this place, but I wouldn't make a special trip to eat here again. I admire the fact that they offer multiple vegan/vegetarian options, but with so much variety, I felt that the vision behind the food got muddled."

  • "Our party of 8, including a one-year old had a great time on a Saturday night. Staff attended to all our needs pleasantly and effortlessly. That included trying to sweeten the ice tea for my very southern mother-in-law. It was restaurant week so we had a fixed price menu available. Selections were quite good including salmon, chicken, ans short ribs. The shrimp and corn chowder was exceptional. Deserts were quite tasty. Can't wait to try again in spring. The restaurant is right on Public Square which should really shine in warmer weather."

  • "I've been to Pura Vida a few times since it opened and I fall in love with something new each time. A group of friends was going to a concert at HOB and we thought we'd start our night here. WOW! It was the perfect decision. Two of my friends are vegans and they wouldn't stop talking about all the choices on the vegetarian menu. As a carnivore I ordered the short ribs from the standard menu. They were out of this world. We all had nothing but high praise for pura vida afterwards. Our server was eager to make sure we were happy, but not in an overkill 'in your face' way. The drinks were poured just right. And the food was outstanding. A great representation of a great city."

  • "We went to Pura Vida because we had heard about we had heard about their separate vegan menu. It is difficult to find a traditional restaurant with many vegan options. This menu had so many options and the food was incredible. I had a pot pie with root vegetables in a mushroom gravy with puff pastry. My husband had African peanut stew and udon noodles. For dessert... chocolate cake that was the texture of chocolate fudge mixed with moist cake and a tiny chocolate shake."

  • "We went here to celebrate my daughter's birthday. One of our group also can only eat gluten free. Two of us prefer vegetarian or seafood meals. Everyone loved the food. The gluten free menu was exciting and thoroughly enjoyed! The soup was out of this world wonderful. The presentation lovely. The meat meal was great. We hope to come back and I highly recommend this to anyone who wants a culinary adventure. (Note: We also chose this restaurant because they support local farms/business.)"
