Diner Reviews
  • "Great atmosphere! The perfect place for a special occasion. Salmon entree was amazing!"

  • "The place was great; had a funky vibe. Food was delicious, but not particularly memorable. How many different times can I have a $30 piece of fish in an oversized bowl?"

  • "Was really looking forward to dining here. Had heard great things. Obscenely overpriced for a limited menu of strange combinations. Chef would not allow for any adjustments. Very noisy environment. Not worth the money. Bar was crowded and seemed to be a popular place."

  • "The seating was correct. Having a reservation is highly recommended. Menus were a bit confusing and choices were rather limited. The entrees were all right, but not that fantastic. I have been to lesser restaurants and had food that was more proportioned and flavorful. I would not come here again. Definitely do not get the bang for the buck."

  • "The service I experienced during brunch on a Sunday was horrific. We had to wait ten minutes for our waiter to come back to our table after he introduced himself to us. After placing our orders we had to wait another 13 minutes for our drinks (which was just a bottle of Prosecco Served with the mixers. It shouldn't have taken so long for us to get this one bottle. It's not like the 5 of us each ordered some insanely difficult to make cocktail. Thankfully our food was good, even though it took 1) about 30 minutes for us to get it, 2) we weren't asked if we wanted ketchup and 3) we didn't get any syrup with our French Toast. The crazy thing is that the restaurant was half empty so there was no excuse for such horrible service."

  • "Great Salad Lyonaise, the frisée with Larson and the cheesecake dessert fabulous!!!"

  • "I went with a group of six, and the food and ambiance were amazing. However, our waiter forgot some of our drinks on a few different occasions, and disappeared halfway through the night. We asked to split the check five ways, and he split it by six. Realizing his mistake, he called me and asked us to come back so he could fix his problem! While I would return again because of the food and atmosphere, I was very disappointed in the service. Because we had a large party and gratuity was included, it seemed like our waiter took advantage of that and chose to focus his attention elsewhere. I hope this was an anomaly in this fabulous Chicago staple."

  • "By far the worst service I have ever had any where in the city. We had 9pm reservations for a party of 6 and did not get seated until 10:15. Food was average and the noise was so loud. Will never be returning."

  • "Two problems: (1) The noise level was unbearable and (2) the Service was excellent...too excellent. We were in and out in less than an hour (having had drinks elsewhere). Having been aware of the Pump Room for decades, I finally had the opportunity to dine there. It was a great scene for young adults who have hefty bank accounts. It just isn't the "old" Pump Room. Then again, things change."

  • "The Lobster was absolutely wonderful. Full of flavor and tender. Brett knew I was torn between the Scallops and the Lobster and recommended the lobster. He was right. Brett was extremely helpful and funny and made our night very special."

  • "The food was PERFECT. The pics online don't do it justice. Beautiful dining room and bar. Bad Service: Server waited several minutes in between checking on our table. She walked by several times serving other tables without so much as acknowledging that my date and I had a pulse. When I called her attention, she put up her finger and kept walking without even looking at us. It will be interesting to see if they call me to apologize."

  • "I had dinner with friends here and it was all I expected and more! I actually cannot wait to go back and I would totally take friends to this spot when they come and visit. Great drinks, appetizers, and entrees. Definitely worth my money! Ill be seeing this place again soon!"

  • "Great menu, but for the price point I feel the service could have been more adhere. My waiter often passed us up when our water was empty and when we needed attending to. He didn't seem all that busy... Wait staff was overall friendly, but they could definitely be more alert. Also, I had requested a lively seating atmosphere for my 28th Birthday dinner and was saddened when I was sitting facing a wall and couple towards the back. Get it together PUMP ROOM!"

  • "This is my third time at Pump Room and they never disappoint. I love the cocktails many of which have an interesting spicy-sweet combination. We really enjoyed the black truffle flat bread and the scallops. The service was a bit slow to get started as we had to wait 8-10 minutes before anyone came over, but it was prompt the rest of the meal. The lighting in the main room creates a perfect romantic ambiance."

  • "Great, trendy place to have dinner and a couple of drinks inside the Public Hotel. The dining section is set off from the bar, so it's not like you're sitting in a crowded bar having dinner while everyone else there is getting wasted. But on the other hand, the dining section is very lively and just as trendy/hip as the bar area. From the moment you walk in to the place, you know you're in for a real stylish, trendy dining experience."

  • "I did not expect the service to be impeccable, the food creative mix of favors which were perfectly prepared along with an artistic presentation. Delicious! Really nice evening."

  • "This is one of my favorite spots to have brunch. Great ambiance and great food. My top food recommendations would be the Challah French Toast, Toad In The Hole, and the Fried Organic Chicken."

  • "I and my party went to celebrate a life milestone and the Pump Room delivered. Most of us had the Jean-Georges Signature Tasting menu with wine pairing supplement. It was fantastic! The others had a la carte offerings and their dishes were wonderful too. It was a happening place, and a bit loud after the place was full, but a truly special experience."

  • "I recently dined at Pump Room and the service was awful and the food was lacking. I do not recommend this restaurant and will not dine here again."

  • "Overall it was a great experience. It is definitely fit for a special occasion. A little overpriced for the amount of food we received, specifically the lamb entree and especially since we asked the server what would be most filling because my boyfriend was extremely hungry. We would recommend it for a special occasion but not if you are really hungry."

  • "My boyfriend and I ate here ariund 9:00 on a Friday and the place was still busy with a nice dressed crowd. We loved their tuna tartar, tagliatelle/pasta and the carmalized beef tenderloin! All so good!"

  • "So many better choices in Chicago. Filled with people more interested in an instagram pic than actually dining. The waiter was HORRIBLE and it was so loud conversation during dinner was basically impossible. Food was adequate at best. Next time I will go to Tru-"

  • "The food was terrific though the staff was disinterested this particular evening. From the hostess who looked bored out of her mind to the waiters who didn't engage and smelled of cigarette smoke. Lighting was up way too high as well. Based on previous experiences here it was likely a one off off though one expects attention to detail here."

  • "We went for a 6PM reservation. Got there early about 5:20. Taken to a table when, the restaurant was virtually empty, around a corner in back to a round table that the couch didn't match the curvature of. Next to the waiters' closet. No view other than some other tables. All empty. Food and waiter were great but when ordering was told to order appetizer and entree at same time because the place was to get busy and this would assure our food delivery. Left the restaurant around 6:30. Meal complete. Didn't feel "special" to these folks but on the other hand I didn't complain about the table or the feeling that we needed to move quickly."

  • "We had a nice evening at the Pump Room. We got seated right away. It took our server a bit long to greet us but from then on out he was great. Our entrees were good but definitely on the small side. For that reason we both ordered dessert. They were excellent. This place was cool because while it was updated, you still got a little bit of the old school vibe through the patrons. We would consider this a special occasion place, the diners all come well dressed and the hosts and hostess looked nice as well. Why are the servers in gym shoes and jeans? That just felt odd to us. Maybe management is trying to keep it from feeling too stuffy? I didn't find it pretentious at all which was nice. We'd definitely go back again."

  • "For the last year, my role within my company was to attend the top 100 or so restaurants in Chicago. Sadly, the creativeness and delivery of product at the Pump Room missed for me and my guest on our visit and would land the restaurant somewhere on the lower end of quality and taste. We were going for the scenery and experience which was classy and lived up to expectations, I just think there's a lack of passion coming out of the kitchen right now."

  • "My husband and I came here the night before Valentines day. The atmosphere was warm and sexy, despite the large crowd, noise level was perfect. Loved the ambience. Started off with a Manhattan and a cucumber martini- perfectly balanced. The brocoli rabe and pepperoni flatbread was flavorful and light. I had the scallops with spaghetti squash for an entree and was very impressed. Seared and seasoned just the way I like. My husband got the tenderloin was extremely happy. Service is on point and well timed."

  • "We were celebrating a friend's birthday. The restaurant wrote "Happy Birthday" on the dessert plate. A nice touch! Service ver attentive and excellent food."
    Dined on 2/21/2014
  • "This Valentine's Day is the first we visited here, aside from the historical significance, the atmosphere and bar scene is great. The food is exceptional, we ordered both the prefix as well as the regular menu for comparison and we were not disappointed in anyway. However, the service was a bit slow maybe due to Valentine's Day and all but the wait staff was quite attentive, but it still turned out to be a three hour dinner. We would definitely come back for 2nds."

  • "Great place to grab a drink but that's about it. I don't recommend anything other than that. Food and service were just ok at best. Not worth the price compared to other restaurants in the area."

  • "We took family here for a late brunch to celebrate my son's Solemn Communiion. We had a great time and the the wait staff made sure we had a lovely experience. The food was great, including the Bubbly Experience."

  • "This restaurant was exactly what we wanted. Dinner was excellent! Started out with tuna tartare and beet salad, which were both delicious. My husband had short ribs which were fantastic and I had crab cakes which were scrumptious. My only complaint was that our reservations were at 8:30 but we were not seated until 9:00 PM. Fortunately we were not in any hurry!"

  • "Food was excellent - We had the restaurant week menu and the salmon appetizer was delicious as was the lamb chop and pasta entrees. Our server was very attentive. Prices are somewhat high on the regular menu, but I would still go back when it wasn't restaurant week."

  • "For $200 for two people, the only part that I was happy with was the cherry-yuzu soda and my glass of Viognier. We ordered four small plates and two entrees. I have loved JG restaurants in New York but almost everything we ordered was way too salty, the whitefish was overly fishy. Makes me think that a great JG menu is just poorly executed here."
