Diner Reviews
  • "While the food was good though a bit pricey, there was no music on the weekends, service perfunctory and no vibe. Valet parking is as pricey as the food."

  • "Great place to go for brunch or dinner. Restaurant is bright and airy, and has a clean and comfortable feel. Service was great - our server was knowledgeable about the menu but not pushy when it came to helping us choose our entrees. Burrata appetizer was on the smaller end, but very tasty. We had the short ribs, scallops and pork chop. All delicious. My only complaint was that they had some greens on top of the scallops which were confusing and hard to eat. Loved the bacon with the scallops though. Dessert was a deconstructed sundae with popcorn and salted caramel ice cream - so tasty!"

  • "Although a beautiful place the appetizer portions are so skimpy and the entree portions are appetizer like in appearance. The short ribs were incredibly small and quite expensive."

  • "Went here based on article in the FT, so a little wary, but what a place, possibly the best meal I have had this year anywhere in the world. Just brilliant. Wish I lived in Chicago ....."

  • "My wife and I celebrated our anniversary here on 6/28/14. I called ahead and asked if a message could be put at the top of a menu and they said they could make that happen, when we checked in we we're welcomed with a "happy anniversary" from the host and hostess, when our waiter came by he gave us a "happy anniversary," the menu's contained the message as requested, and at dessert we were brought a dessert with "happy anniversary" written in dark chocolate syrup around the rim. So needless to say the level of service, the staff making the night special, and the attention to detail from the first phone conversation through the entire dinner was outstanding. The food was very good as you would expect, and the atmosphere was relaxing."

  • "Having not been to the new Pump Room since its transformation, my daughter and I made reservations for her birthday not sure what to expect. I will get to the punch line and describe our evening in a word: splendid. The room is gorgeous. The tasting menu, just $95 with wine pairings was a six course work of art. The service was professional and attentive. The shortcomings of our primary waiter who seemed more concerned with his own affectations than our experience were more than backstopped by his runners and bus crew who were truly outstanding. This is a NYC caliber dining experience that just seems to work in Chicago. Well done. Highly recommended."

  • "Our waitress was outstanding - very friendly and attentive! And the ambience of restaurant was great. I wish the food was as good. My wife's salmon was undercooked and "mushy" in a couple spots. My sea bass was pretty dry and lacked flavor. I will say our prosciutto flatbread appetizer was spectacular! Next time we might just stick w entrees."

  • "Obviously NOT a place for lunch! Don't get me wrong, the food was fabulous! Although a lot of people walking thru hard to get a refill on iced tea. Only five tables were occupied , a chicken sandwich took 45 minutes after ordering. Main room closed but you could get a glimpse of the glamorous decor. Have been there for drinks when the room was bustling."

  • "Great food .. Service is good but just slow for food to come .. That is mean the kitchen problem not the waiter and waitress problem .."

  • "Service was horrible. Had a reservation and it took an hour after reservation time to be seated. Hostess was rude."

  • "Would be a great spot for drinks -- food was good, not outstanding for the price. Smaller portions almost require an appetizer + entree."

  • "The service was outstanding and the food was so good too! A wonderful experience. Great ambiance for people watching. Soo chic and fabulous without being gaudy."

  • "I went on a Gilt deal and was really unimpressed. It's the Pump Room...and I was down right disappointed. Everything was okay, but nothing to write home about. Our waiter then disappeared on a us at the end of the meal."

  • "I thought this would be a good option for a weekend with family (historic and cuisine that's not too crazy for parents) but did not have huge expectations beyond that due to speckled yelp reviews. It turned out to be perfect. The food was outstanding, the service was extremely attentive and helpful, and the ambiance can't be beat (classy but still lively). They also have a lot of round tables (even for 8 people) which is perfect for catching up with friends and family."

  • "Best dinner in several years, unlike any other offering n the city. Only challenge is the noise which makes normal conversation impossible."

  • "Went for lunch. The ginger margarita is life changing! We were told by the server that they has the best burger in Chicago - they do not. I enjoyed my side of broccoli better. Wasn't bad but was expecting fireworks after the "sell". 3/4 of us got the burger and all felt the same... great drinks, pretty good food."

  • "I took my wife here for our 27th wedding anniversary. We had a great waiter named Eric. He was very knowledgeable about the menu and food. He took care to ask about food allergies and made great recommendations. Everything was great and Eric noted the anniversary and made the evening special. He did a great job and represented the establishment well. We wanted to see the place where many entertainers, celebrities and athletes had eaten in the past. It is a good spot. We will be back."

  • "We had a Gilt City deal, so maybe that was the issue, but the service was pretty terrible. I would hope our server did not discriminate because we had purchased a deal, but then again, i would hope that wasnt normal service because it was unacceptable. My boyfriend said it was one of the worst dining experiences he's ever had, and save for the food I'd agree. Our server was so inattentive, and we probably spent 2 hours waiting and 40 minutes actually eating. The food was great, but i was using the Gilt to check it out, and the bad service overrides the good food."

  • "Great menu choices, attentive waiter who was charming but not intrusive. Food was delicious and portions were just right. Would highly recommend this for a special night out. In the beautiful Gold Coast neighbourhood - perfect for a late night walk after your meal to take in the old Victorians and tree-lined streets."

  • "This restaurant is absolutely beautiful, but the food and service are inconsistent. We had eight people. In order to provide good service, we had several servers, but they didn't coordinate with each other so ongoing orders like more drinks or additional sauce weren't communicated to the primary server and went undelivered or took too long. One of our entrees was delivered cold and was sent back to be heated. Our primary server wasn't told and we didn't get the heated entree back until everyone else had finished their entrees. The entree was not "comped" and no attempt was made to make amends. The beef, lamb and chicken entrees were delicious, the desserts were terrible. I had the same mediocre experience with 10 guests before."

  • "The Pump House was my dinner choice for my birthday weekend. Great choice. We all had the sample menu with the wine recommendations. Everything was fabulous. The food and pairings were great and generous. The waiter was friendly and informative, the environment was modern but comfortable. I would highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "Dined at the Pump Room while visiting Chicago. The ambiance was fantastic, and the service was perfect. The truffle flatbread was a bit salty and lackluster (for a truffle flatbread), but the lentil soup was fantastic. Craft drinks are noteable. Nice vibe, vibrant nightlife scene. "

  • "Went to Pump Room for a 9pm dinner last Fri, but they clearly didn't have a table to match our res. We were told to wait in the lounge and get a drink, but no one was able to take our order for 20mins. Finally had to get our own drinks at the bar -- asked for their sour cherry old-fashioned, but the bartender had no clue what we were talking about and made us "regular" old-fashioneds with soda water. By 9:30pm, we had already asked the hostess TWICE about our table. Decided to order a flatbread while we waited, but 10 mins later, it arrived at the table next to us! We were seated at 10pm after speaking with the manager. We received no apology from the manager; our waiter, Eric, was wonderful but not a reflection on the restaurant."

  • "The Pump Room at the Public Hotel is a fantastic restaurant. The service is done by the whole team, so you have all the attention you could want. The servers are friendly and knowledgeable - the decor makes it look as though the place could be snobby but the servers make sure it isn't. The beet and arugula salad was divine, until about the last ten bites - too much yogurt and balsamic on a salad that was so refreshing on its own. The tuna tartare was amazing and putting it on avocado made it creamy and wonderful, but I didn't understand the strong vinegar soup that surrounded it and made the dish get soggy. Why overpower such a great dish as tuna tartare? Overall, the food is fantastic - they just need to do a little less to it."

  • "Great place, solid food, drinks are average, service good. Ordered steak tartar, short rib, and scallops- all so tasty! The luxurious set up and elegant touches makes for a romantic place for two or a hip trendy place for a group!"

  • "This was our first time at the Pump Room since the hotel and restaurant went through a total remodel. It's beautiful, the service was excellent, and the food was outstanding. We enjoyed dinner so much, we decided to return the next day for brunch... and once again were thrilled with the experience. The portions were perfect for me and my husband to share, allowing us to sample several different dishes. We walked away 100% satisfied and did not feel overly stuffed. We look forward to returning and trying more dishes. "

  • "Lovely room, great attentive service, and some terrific and original menu items. We ate on a Friday night in energetic scene with lots of girls in black dresses. Extremely loud. Great for kicking off a weekend of partying. Not so great for relaxing "after a long week" supper. "

  • "Not only is the ambiance a complete bore, but the food was tasteless . We had a chicken sandwich I am sure was microwaved, a carrot salad with zero taste and never even was offered desert. The wait staff is not well trained. We were seated at least 10 minutes before we were approached, I asked for the champagne list and was told the "by the glass menu was all they had"' I asked if he could ask again for a bottle menu after another ten minutes he brought it. After the initial pour ,which was not to me to try, we had to ask them to refill. I was entertaining out of town guests and was embarrassed that I picked such a lousy restaurant ! This pump room is absolutely nothing like the one of old. "

  • "We went for my friends birthday. I had called them a month in advance and asked if it would be ok to bring 1-2 sparklers that they could stick on our friends dessert. At the time they had told me it would be completely fine. When I got to the restaurant I confirmed about the sparklers and was again told it was no problem. 2 min later the hostess said the manager would not allow it anymore even though they had told me it was ok at first. Very disappointed bc it was the one thing my friend had asked for. Luckily our waiter was nice enough to stick them on anyway. The food and our waiter were perfect and I have no complaints about that. Probably won't be back for a birthday celebration though."
