Diner Reviews
  • "Perfect for a quiet evening out. The food is very well done standard New England fare. Shepherd s pie and the traditional turkey dinner were real favorites. Our sever truly contributed to our enjoyment Food is not sophisticated but rawly delicious."

  • "We went for lunch and the menu was very interesting as was the wine list. The food was very very good and there is nothing I would change. They offered sweet buns and breads which were wonderful, and they have a bakery in the same building! I would return and recommend this highly."

  • "This place is charming! It's historical, classic & warm & friendly. The butternut squash ravioli is a must! The turkey day dinner is outrageously good & large! Whenever we travel to & from Boston this is a definite!"

  • "Lunch at the Publick House continues to be our favorite place to meet up with folks from CT and MA. Reliably good food and service."

  • "was there for a conference, so a convenient place for lunch. waiter was very nice, food, meh. menus not very inspiring. Stale bread in the bread basket, my friend had a stale croissant for her sandwich. My fried haddock was nicely done, though."

  • "Cozy fire, good wine, great service, delicious salmon. Turkey dinner the real deal but order something else for a more special occasion"

  • "We had booked the Publick House one month in advance for a family get together. Despite the fact that the reservations a month in advance, upon arrival we had to wait while they 'put some tables together'. We were shuffled into a function room with stark white lighting, scratched tables and rickety chairs. I can only liken the experience as 'diner like'. If fact, there was a telephone in the room that was constantly ringing. The service was slow . The desserts came from the 'bakery' and were billed separately. The meal was OK but not worth the $30/meal -- cold upon arrival. The entire experience was overpriced, poorly managed and no atmosphere. I felt like a third class citizen paying first class prices. Would not recommend it."

  • "We always look forward to our visit to the Public House. Whether it be breakfast, lunch or dinner we enjoy a delicious meal and so enjoy sitting by the open fire during these long cold winter months."

  • "everything was top notch. Food, waitress , etc. We were pleasantly surprised when our waitress brought 4 complimentary cup cakes to the table. We were celebrating all 4 of our birthdays that week. We meet there every March for this celebration of friendship of more than 50 years. The other couple comes up from CT. and we are form Marlborough so this is a perfect half way point."

  • "The Publick House is always cozy and charming. Food is delicious and always consistent. Menu is all -American favorites, upgraded to gourmet goodness, but easily recognizable."

  • "This is a beautiful dining spot. A bit noisy. Plentiful delicious food. Great bread basket. Excellent cocktails. Difficult to maneuver our way through the building from the back parking lot through a wedding party to get to the dining room. Not a spot for children. Good for a special occasion."

  • "Classic New England Dining, the duck was fantastic, however, the veggies were cold ? Odd, but, this place will bring back a ton of memories if your New England native , if not, then you'll be jealous of us New Englanders !!"

  • "Average American fare. Limited menu. Everything comes with sauces or creams. Butternut bisque sounded good until I learned it was made with cream. The. evening's special, swordfish, was ordered by 2 people and it was so tough they both sent it back and ordered the salmon. The location was the best part of the evening because it provided a meeting place for 2 families coming from opposit ends of the state. The wait staff was also excellent."

  • "We live in NY and my sister is near Boston. The Publick House was perfect choice for a lunch. We all loved the pub-like atmosphere and the roaring fire gave the room a wonderful ambiance. Our servor was attentive and cheerful, food was tasty and the bread pudding yummie. My daughter would like the BBLT bread to have been toasted more but not a big deal. Thank you and we will do this again and thanks for the mid week coupon!!"

  • "We haven't visited the Publick House in a very long time, but for a friend's birthday we decided to take a Sunday ride and try it again. We all had a great dinner and the service was excellent."

  • "Party of 6 Slow service, maybe our waiter had too tables or the kitchen was slow. My steak was cold and I couldn't find my waiter to tell him about it. So, I had to flag down the hostess to let her know. They solved the problem to my satisfaction. It appeared that everybody else in the party had no issues. ."

  • "Being warmed by the original huge fireplace, eating a delicious dinner makes for a very enjoyable winter evening. We always look forward to this time. Our waitress was so focused on our comfort and satisfaction. She was very pleasant and that certainly adds to the enjoyment of our dinner. Thank you all. We always look forward to our next visit."

  • "Our meal was delicious and dining in front of the open fireplace on an evening well in the single digits added to the warm comfortable atmosphere. We very much enjoy breakfasts, lunches, and dinners here. Thank you Staff."

  • "Service was excellent! In a party of four, three of us had dinners that were very good; the fourth member of our party ordered filet which was very tough. That was unfortunate. Sticky buns were delicious!"

  • "Well known for wedding and special occasion gatherings, the Publick House is a gem for special gatherings or just to drop in and have a casual meal in their public dining or pub. Many private function rooms with their own character...you will NOT find the typical 4-walls function rooms here...especially with the converted barn reception area. My group gathered in their main public dining room and loved sitting in front of the large hearth fireplace. The service was WONDERFUL as was the food and cocktails. I can't visit this location enough and wished I lived a little bit closer. I don't think you'll be disappointed!!!"

  • "We return after many visits to the Publick House as it has a consistent menu of delicious food. My husband and I both had the turkey with the trimmings as it is always so fresh and made from scratch. our friends had duck and fish and chips. both were very satisfied with the entrees. The indian pudding we had was the best and served hot topped with ice cream. Another guest had a raspberry dessert which she enjoyed immensely. We will return for more meals served in a very historic place with authentic menus."

  • "A group of us go here once a year to get together because it is central for us. The fireplace, though beautiful, was soooo hot as we were one of the two tables right on top of it, so keep that in mind. Also, the wait staff kept bumping into my chair as they walked between me and the fireplace. The food is always good. Waitress was attentive, and the "Old Fashioned," though small, was very good. I had the lobster mac and cheese app and a chef salad ... both good. The others had the squash ravioli app and salad or french onion soup. Very good. The Indian Pudding that two of them had was declared "outstanding.""

  • "Lovely place for our family Christmas gathering. It was very busy the night we were there and the floor could have been cleaner near our table but the drinks and dinner were good and we enjoyed being there."

  • "Friends and I had our annual Christmas get together here. The inn is decorated so lovely for the holidays. The giant gingerbread house was awesome. Food delicious. The bread basked is to die for! Our waitress was super friendly and brought us more pecan rolls and butter without us having to ask. Dining room is quaint, we sat by a huge fireplace. Very enjoyable evening. If you don't have room for dessert (we didn't) stop by the Bake Shop on the way out. Lots of goodies to choose from!"

  • "We had a reservation for 8 and were easily seated due to poor weather and a half-full room. Service was painfully slow for no apparent reason. Management tried to assist but there was little improvement. Portions were large but really quite average from a taste/quality/presentation perspective."

  • "Six of us had dinner in front of the fireplace - no problem being warm! A couple of ducks (yum), lobster mac n cheese was a hit, as was the lobster Newberg. All in all everyone had a great time and it was festive for the holidays. Kimberly our server was great!!"

  • "Had duck, it was well done, dry. Came with sausage stuffing, very dense, too bready did not taste sausage. Date had salmon, not bad but nothing special. The breads were very good but main course was very disappointing."

  • "Very enjoyable evening except for having to wait over 20 minutes to be seated with a reservation. Perhaps the parties were booked for too short a time at that table. Otherwise, the service was excellence, the ambiance the best, especially with the red poinsettias for Christmas, and the food was very good."

  • "We took our mother/mother in law the the Publick House for her birthday. We got "bonus points" on that one! She loved the winter scene as we drove up....right at the front door/easy walk with her cane. It was obvious that she enjoyed the bustling of the patrons during the holiday season. Rooms were decorated lovely. She had chicken pot pie.....ate half (exactly half) and brought the other half home for the next day. The extra pecan roll went home with her....she was delighted! I had prime rib (love the horseradish sauce) and my husband had baked fish. The evening was a hit all around!"

  • "We visited while adult children were in town the week before Thanksgiving and again the day after Thanksgiving. First time was a Tuesday night and the service and food were exceptional. Our waitress was truly wonderful and attentive to every detail. On the second visit our waiter was visibly tired and it showed in his service. Nothing terrible, just forgot our bread basket and was slow to clear extra items off of the table after dinner (he took them away once we piled them up). These were my first visits to the Publick House in several years and I was very pleased with the food and ambiance. I will be back again--but maybe not the day after Thanksgiving!"

  • "The food at The Publick House was outstanding. The fried goat cheese with remoulade sauce was a good appetizer. The braised salmon with sweet potato side and rice was excellent. The wine list offered a good Malbec. The service was prompt and friendly. I would highly recommend this restaurant!!!"

  • "Enjoyed the Thanksgiving Feast. Great price. Dessert AND Coffee included. The cinnamon buns in the bread basket are delicious and still the same for over 50 years that I can recall. A gem."

  • "The Public House is our "mood elevator". At the end of a busy week, there is nothing better than going to the Public House for a delicious dinner. Winter is one of my favorite seasons to visit. The outside has lovely white light everywhere....it's like a winter wonderland! My prime rib was cooked to order and the butternut squash is the best anywhere (not overly sweet, just right!). My husband chose baked fish and said it was delicious. It's a good place to bring the entire family for a celebration or a lovely place to go for two. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!"

  • "We drove an hour for my wifes 57th birthday and it was well worth the drive. The food was excellent and our table right near the fire place was perfect. All 4 of us had something different and all four agreed that the food was delicious. I myself had the Lobster Pie in Newburgh sauce and it was outstanding. I wish I could remember our servers name, but she was very nice, never rushed us and just thought everything was perfect. Best part of the night--leaving and stopping at the bakery. I'm glad I didn't get my wife a cake in advanced as I'd never know who great the cake at this bakery was. Thanks for a great night."

  • "The setting is definitely charming, but there's not much beyond that. The service was inattentive and poor (we had to make simple requests for items such as water several times - some never delivered). The food was salt, meat, and starch dominated and the preparation was basic. Perhaps this was to be expected in a colonial setting, but the menu descriptions certainly led us to expect more. The highlight was the sticky buns and rolls which were delicious - I assume from the bakery downstairs. We probably should have just stopped there."
