While PUBLIC’s cuisine is a fusion of flavors from around the world, the restaurant’s vibe is unmistakably Manhattan. Located on a tree-lined street in Nolita, this airy modern-minimalist eatery exudes sophisticated charm with details like library card catalogs, old-fashioned mailboxes, a large flowering tree and a cozy back lounge with a fireplace.

The Australasian cuisine inspired by Executive Chef Brad Farmerie’s London training and travels through Australia, New Zealand, and the East features a menu that “knows no ethnic borders.” The restaurant was awarded a coveted Michelin Star in the 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 New York Guides.
PUBLIC also received a myriad of awards for its design, including ‘Best Restaurant Graphics’ and ‘Best Restaurant Design’ by the James Beard Foundation.

  • "I ate at PUBLIC several times in the past, but my recent dinner had been terrible. Both the food and the service were poor at best. We ordered appetizers (which came within a reasonable time) but then had to waited 50+ minutes to get our entrees. And the quality of food and the preparation was not satisfactory. Last but not least right after our waitress brought us the check, she totally ignored us. Hence, after 30 minutes wait, I had to go to the counter and tell the host we wanted to pay and that our waitress had disappeared. With an arrogant attitude the host told me that she would have taken care of it. But no apologies, nor we were offered a complimentary dessert. This was my last time at PUBLIC"

  • "Public's atmosphere was very pretty with a lot of candle light and cool decor but the food was really disappointing. The handcrafted cocktails weren't very good either. Our expectations were not met. I always order gazpacho anytime it is on the menu and I expected to have a delicious version of my favorite. It wasn't bad but not great either. We tried everything...kangaroo, venison, lamb, oysters...all just ok. The best thing we had was the wine. The service was fair, friendly but not very attentive."

  • "My wife and I wanted to experience a Michelene star restaurant. We loved the ambiance, decor, the open air dining with a view of the garden across the street. We didn't have to wait since we book a reservation on open table. I ordered the lamb oso buco which was delicious, my wife the branzino that looked like a sardine but also had great flavor. My wife is very thin yet she was still hungry after her fish entrée which was totally appetizer size. The vodka spritzer was great!"

  • "I've been dying to try PUBLIC for quite some time. My first to attempts were shot because they were booked for weddings but, as they say, the third time was a charm. We were impressed the moment we were greeted by the hostess. From the exposed facades to the bathrooms we were finally able to say, this is the NYC dining experience we have always wanted. Simple yet elegant, great vision, and friendly without snobbery. Triple points for using a beam to hold up the tables instead of individual table legs. Food was awesome - scallops and venison are the way to go. One bite of the scallops and we wanted to meet the chef (we never care to meet the chef so this is a big deal readers). In short, you name it, and it was wonderful."

Add to that bartenders crafting cocktails with all fresh ingredients, off the beaten path wines that never disappointed and absolutely perfect service from the moment we walked though the door. WOW!"

  • "This was our first time to PUBLIC. The place is decorated very cool, and there is an air of snobbery throughout, starting with the two hosts. Our reserved table was not ready so we went to the bar. I had a cucumber margarita with cayenne salt and it was good. Seated at the table we quickly realized that this place isnt loud, its deafening. My wife and I literally could barely have a conversation. We started with the Kangaroo carpaccio ("how many places in NY serve Kangaroo?" challenged our waitress) and were let down. Resist the sales pitch and skip it. The lentil salad was delicious. We split the Lamb oso bucco and it was good, but not outstanding. Service also left something to be desired, too. We were surprised."

  • "I enjoyed eating at Public on a Friday night. The food was great value for the quality. My least favorite may have been the Kangaroo, which was interesting but not something I'd order again. It was a bit too smokey and served with a salad dressed in truffle oil, which is me is kind of a cop out. The mushroom ceviche, jerusalem artichokes and the anchovies were fantastic, however."

  • "I brought a friend; we had a tasting menu. I was looking forward to a fun, casual meal, with some quirky Australian game dishes thrown in for good measure. Instead, I was floored. Our server was not only charming but full of knowledge and expertise. Our sommelier Peter poured unexpectedly well-matched pairings—those flavors won't soon be forgotten. I noticed that there were some great values in bottles as well, as you'd expect from Australian wines. This restaurant really left an impression—the casual vibe and chic decor promises a great time, and delivers it, but Public also offers a substantial treasure of culinary thrills, and the kind of service that won't go unnoticed by those who know how to appreciate it. I'll come back for sure."

  • "My boyfriend and I went to Public to celebrate my birthday. Reception was great and we were at first very impressed with the atmosphere: nice decoration and nice music. Not many tourists, many different people. We ordered the 5 course tasting menu. The first two courses were great, in special the oyster over an exotic tasteful Japanese leaf. The Kobe beef was a disappointment: it was a little cold and we had a hard time trying to cut it and the toast beneath it with the knife they gave us. The following two courses (venison and the caramel pie) were great. By the end of our meal, there were a lot of people arround, many of them just hanging or sitting by the bar. Still not crowd."

  • "My fiancé and I went to PUBLIC on a Tuesday night for dinner. The atmosphere was lively, the bar crowded for a Tuesday and the dining room(s) pretty full. The restaurant was busy but not too loud- it was easy to have a conversation and chat with the staff. Great for a date night. The menu was intriguing which I guess you would expect for a restaurant with a Michelin Star. Our waiter was very knowledgable about the food and helped us pair wines with our meal. There was a bit of a mix-up with our first drink but it was easily rectified and the waiter apologized. The rest of the meal went perfectly... the bread was amazing (try the focaccia!) and the appetizers + entrees were delicious. Fantastic experience!"

  • "Delicious food in a beautiful room. The menu offers a wide variety of meats and fish, prepared in numerous styles. Even though this is modeled after Australian cuisine and ingredients, the flavors are from all over the world. My girlfriend had a perfectly cooked Venison Steak while I had Red Snapper in a red curry. The appetizers were the highlight of the meal. The Beef Tongue was perfectly cooked and generously portioned. My girlfriend loved the Foie Gras, which had a nice marriage of some unconventional flavors. Our waiter also brought us a few complimentary items. Not sure if that's something one should expect when they go, but it does spotlight the friendliness of the staff. "

  • "Our first Michelin starred restaurant in New York and sadly I could not wait to leave. We booked ages ago and were there at 7:30 but when we ordered were told the Sunday fixed price menu was not available, which was the reason we booked in the first place. They gave us a free plate of mushroom ceviche but it was so overpowered by the acid, there was no taste of mushroom at all. Our mains were very ordinary, again too overpowered by other flavours, and the lamb was dry and over cooked. Being Australians, like the lamb, I'd hate to think that's what New Yorkers might think is a good example of Aussie lamb. Generally though the service was very good."

She sipped champagne, and smiled everytime she took a bit of her trout and Chantrelles. My sister who is the pickiest eater to live, kicked her plate clean.   • "I went with my friend Saturday night with reservation. I immediately fell in love with their interior decor. We actually order the kangaroo carpaccio and it was good. I had the venison for main, it was a little bit saltier for my taste and not really thrilled with the sides that comes with it. Their focaccia and butter was amazing, my friend and I asked for second. Both of us got the dessert trio and it was a great choice we both get to try 3 desserts and don't have to feel too guilty about it. The cocktail menu was also great. I had a rum+ginger beer drink thing that comes in a camp cup. Heard the brunch is pretty good too so will definitely plan to come back for that."

  • "Me and a friend was recommended to eat at this restaurant during our stay in New York. Got an early reservation, and were happy with both how we were recived and the table. Very friendly waiter, but we feel she could be a bit more attentive. The sommelier was very nice, and gave us great wines to go with all our three courses. The food was great! We chose the burrata and beef tongue, red snapper and veal, chocolate devil food cake and granny smith cobbler. Will definetly come back on our next stay!"

  • "Chose Public for my best friend's birthday dinner. Our server was outstanding - warm, knowledgeable, the right level of checking-in. Even the bartender was friendly and attentive while we waited for our other friend to arrive. The starters (foie gras, mushroom ceviche, lentils salad) were unreal delicious and I look forward to going back for more. The mains (the duck, the ricotta cavatelli) were very good. Dessert was ok; we got the devil's food cake, the Stracciatella sundae, and the poached rhubarb. The rhubarb dish was the best, but they all seemed like a lame/messy/lacking ending to an otherwise outstanding meal."

  • "We got a tip from friends back home that this restaurant should be worth a visit. Very friendly staff and service was very good. The ambience and location are very nice. Starters varied, but in general well. Main course in general was disappointing. Especially the dish with duck was mediate at best. Far too much coriander in it and the potato’s just too dry. Deserts were OK. Not for kids as they served only one dish (pasta) and that wasn’t really a treat. Excellent wine tough. So for sure worth a visit, but not living up to expectations. "
