A word from PUBLIC
While PUBLIC’s cuisine is a fusion of flavors from around the world, the restaurant’s vibe is unmistakably Manhattan. Located on a tree-lined street in Nolita, this airy modern-minimalist eatery exudes sophisticated charm with details like library card catalogs, old-fashioned mailboxes, a large flowering tree and a cozy back lounge with a fireplace.

The Australasian cuisine inspired by Executive Chef Brad Farmerie’s London training and travels through Australia, New Zealand, and the East features a menu that “knows no ethnic borders.” The restaurant was awarded a coveted Michelin Star in the 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 New York Guides.
PUBLIC also received a myriad of awards for its design, including ‘Best Restaurant Graphics’ and ‘Best Restaurant Design’ by the James Beard Foundation.

PUBLIC is owned and operated by design and concept firm AvroKO.

Second visit to public. Very fine food with some different options ( kangaroo anyone?). Great setting though we were a little cramped by the window. Good wine and cocktail list with friendly and knowledgeable staff who don't take themselves or a plate of food too seriously.

Public has a limited menu, which is ok if the food is interesting and good. This night, the menu was interesting. My grilled scallops were cooked well, but bland sitting on a bed of tired looking arugula (I think that was what it was ; it's VERY dark in the restaurant). I finally found the small dollop of sauce under the greens when I was on my second (of two) scallop. The pasta dish, even with the addition of lobster was just plain unpleasant. The presentation was ugly and the flavors just didn't work. On top of that, it was so dark that I literally couldn't tell if my fork contained lobster or cauliflower until I bit into it. My wife's fish tasted very "fishy" and the cocktails were uninspired and poorly presented.

My friend and I decided to go to a restaurant that served venison and i picked this one. We were both impressed by the food and the restaurant. We also found kangaroo carppaccio and a new dessert on the menu that night. Great place

A favorite place disappointed this time. I had friends visiting from Berlin, and wanted to share this gem with them. The food was wonderful as usual - especially the lamb, and I had looked forward to after dinner drinks and dessert. But we had to leave - the music was painfully loud, making conversation difficult. I don't remember this as a problem on prior visits; also the hostess and waitstaff did not acknowledge our concern with the volume of the music.

We had a reservation for 6pm and a show at 8pm. I figured that an hour and a half would be sufficient time to get though dinner without feeling rushed. I did not, however, expect to be seated at 6:25 when the restaurant was completely empty. When we sat down, I asked the waitress whether an hour would be enough time to get through dinner since we're 1/2 an hour behind. Instead of any type of "good customer service" answer, we got attitude. The food was solid. The fried oysters with shiso leaves were delicious, and the steelhead trout cooked perfectly, served over a bed of curried cauliflower puree, very well balanced flavors. However, I will not return. So many other restaurants with good service and food.

This was probably one of our favourite dining locations on our two week stay. We had the sunday special supper and were really blown away. The cocktails where also top class. The most impressive part for me was the branding and decor. As I mentioned to them on my tweet, it is probably the most exciting and well executed branding and interior I have seen for a restaurant, to date. Thank you for making our NYC experience memorable!

Fri night - 8pm. Mostly full place, great ambiance. Greeted courteously by maitre'd, who then tried to seat us on the empty top split level dining space even though there were plenty of tables on the "main" level. Not a restauranteur, but didn't get what that was all about?? Once seated where we wanted, service was top notch, from the bread bowl to the water glass. Always a plus point. Opinion on food was split. Vegetarian options were good. Paparadelle was subtle and hit all the right notes. Hubby thought the pork was a bit too salty. Didn't try the dessert. Wine list was comprehensive. Sommelier was helpful and knowledgeable.

Very nice waiter! The bar was a bit slow for a rather empty restaurant (6:30 dinner)... I had the tile fish red curry and "liked" but didn't love. I remember the food being more impressive on previous occasions so I was surprised. I will continue to support Public- it is a lovely establishment.

I don't know what to say about this place. The food is nothing special, and it's extremely expensive. My friend and I ordered oysters and a mushroom plate to share, both were lacking in flavor and presentation. Our server was somewhat annoyed with the fact that we didn't order much, and wasn't very helpful with suggestions, so that made for an uncomfortable dining experience. I wouldn't go back, the price, food and service was poor. However, the restaurant set up is very nice, which is the only good thing I could say about Public.

The three of us have traveled all over the world and seen many eccentric restaurants. It's a little odd when everyone at the table struggles to find a dish they might like. The one positive thing was that our waitress was very knowledgeable and helpful. The row of small oil lamps along the wall leave you with a cozy and romantic feeling.

This is my third time at Public and was not disappointed. Wait staff is very knowledgable about every dish on the menu and is able to offer alternate choices of preparation / ingredients for those of us with food allergies. I had the lentils as first course, which were amazing. The size was generous for at least 2 people. I had the salmon for my main dish. Size was on the small side but flavor was exquisite. I will definetly come back when visiting NY.

The food continues to delight! I had first eaten at Public when it opene years ago, and have dined here many times since. This time: We chose to share the scallops for the appetizer which was "Sumptuous." The venison for a main was cooked to perfection, and my dining companion had the Tilefish which was paired back to a grilled prawn in a curry broth. She had one word. amazing! Chose Public for a great experience. Matt out waiter was attentive and intuited our every wish!
