A word from PUBLIC
While PUBLIC’s cuisine is a fusion of flavors from around the world, the restaurant’s vibe is unmistakably Manhattan. Located on a tree-lined street in Nolita, this airy modern-minimalist eatery exudes sophisticated charm with details like library card catalogs, old-fashioned mailboxes, a large flowering tree and a cozy back lounge with a fireplace.

The Australasian cuisine inspired by Executive Chef Brad Farmerie’s London training and travels through Australia, New Zealand, and the East features a menu that “knows no ethnic borders.” The restaurant was awarded a coveted Michelin Star in the 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 New York Guides.
PUBLIC also received a myriad of awards for its design, including ‘Best Restaurant Graphics’ and ‘Best Restaurant Design’ by the James Beard Foundation.

PUBLIC is owned and operated by design and concept firm AvroKO.

Fri night - 8pm. Mostly full place, great ambiance. Greeted courteously by maitre'd, who then tried to seat us on the empty top split level dining space even though there were plenty of tables on the "main" level. Not a restauranteur, but didn't get what that was all about?? Once seated where we wanted, service was top notch, from the bread bowl to the water glass. Always a plus point. Opinion on food was split. Vegetarian options were good. Paparadelle was subtle and hit all the right notes. Hubby thought the pork was a bit too salty. Didn't try the dessert. Wine list was comprehensive. Sommelier was helpful and knowledgeable.

Very nice waiter! The bar was a bit slow for a rather empty restaurant (6:30 dinner)... I had the tile fish red curry and "liked" but didn't love. I remember the food being more impressive on previous occasions so I was surprised. I will continue to support Public- it is a lovely establishment.

Great idea to combine the old building with the modern design. The concept of the sunday supper is interesting and gives the opportunity to discover new taste. The loud music might be disturbing. We enjoyed!

The three of us have traveled all over the world and seen many eccentric restaurants. It's a little odd when everyone at the table struggles to find a dish they might like. The one positive thing was that our waitress was very knowledgeable and helpful. The row of small oil lamps along the wall leave you with a cozy and romantic feeling.

This is my third time at Public and was not disappointed. Wait staff is very knowledgable about every dish on the menu and is able to offer alternate choices of preparation / ingredients for those of us with food allergies. I had the lentils as first course, which were amazing. The size was generous for at least 2 people. I had the salmon for my main dish. Size was on the small side but flavor was exquisite. I will definetly come back when visiting NY.

The food continues to delight! I had first eaten at Public when it opene years ago, and have dined here many times since. This time: We chose to share the scallops for the appetizer which was "Sumptuous." The venison for a main was cooked to perfection, and my dining companion had the Tilefish which was paired back to a grilled prawn in a curry broth. She had one word. amazing! Chose Public for a great experience. Matt out waiter was attentive and intuited our every wish!

All of the dishes were good overall. What stopped them being great were items that were not good at all. For example, I had the venison which was beautifully cooked. It came with a very tasty pesto coulee which complemented the meat well. But then there was some sort of bean side which was incredibly bland.

Suggested this to an out of town date who is a foodie (someone recommended to me). Great spot - excellent food, nice ambiance, really great service - server was very obliging helping me find a glass of wine I liked & gave us a "sample" of a dessert because we were too full to order something! That's kind service, way to get a repeat customer. I had the trout, which was almost as tasty as arctic char (a favorite) - vegetables were perfect, my date had the duck, which was delicious too. Only downside - tables very close to one another, but they accommodated my request for a table that only had people on one side.

Called a few days ahead, since one of our party is vegan. Was told it would not be a problem. Server pointed out a couple of appetizer options, but when asked if the mashed artichokes could be prepared with olive oil rather than butter, she said the kitchen did not do that. Only with butter and cream. (Maybe they make a whole batch at once, rather than preparing them to order.) The salads were good, but not spectacular. The twice cooked duck was more like leftover duck warmed over. The poached rhubarb was simply raw and quite sour.

I ate at PUBLIC several times in the past, but my recent dinner had been terrible. Both the food and the service were poor at best. We ordered appetizers (which came within a reasonable time) but then had to waited 50+ minutes to get our entrees. And the quality of food and the preparation was not satisfactory. Last but not least right after our waitress brought us the check, she totally ignored us. Hence, after 30 minutes wait, I had to go to the counter and tell the host we wanted to pay and that our waitress had disappeared. With an arrogant attitude the host told me that she would have taken care of it. But no apologies, nor we were offered a complimentary dessert. This was my last time at PUBLIC

Public's atmosphere was very pretty with a lot of candle light and cool decor but the food was really disappointing. The handcrafted cocktails weren't very good either. Our expectations were not met. I always order gazpacho anytime it is on the menu and I expected to have a delicious version of my favorite. It wasn't bad but not great either. We tried everything...kangaroo, venison, lamb, oysters...all just ok. The best thing we had was the wine. The service was fair, friendly but not very attentive.

My wife and I wanted to experience a Michelene star restaurant. We loved the ambiance, decor, the open air dining with a view of the garden across the street. We didn't have to wait since we book a reservation on open table. I ordered the lamb oso buco which was delicious, my wife the branzino that looked like a sardine but also had great flavor. My wife is very thin yet she was still hungry after her fish entrée which was totally appetizer size. The vodka spritzer was great!

I've been dying to try PUBLIC for quite some time. My first to attempts were shot because they were booked for weddings but, as they say, the third time was a charm. We were impressed the moment we were greeted by the hostess. From the exposed facades to the bathrooms we were finally able to say, this is the NYC dining experience we have always wanted. Simple yet elegant, great vision, and friendly without snobbery. Triple points for using a beam to hold up the tables instead of individual table legs. Food was awesome - scallops and venison are the way to go. One bite of the scallops and we wanted to meet the chef (we never care to meet the chef so this is a big deal readers). In short, you name it, and it was wonderful.
