While PUBLIC’s cuisine is a fusion of flavors from around the world, the restaurant’s vibe is unmistakably Manhattan. Located on a tree-lined street in Nolita, this airy modern-minimalist eatery exudes sophisticated charm with details like library card catalogs, old-fashioned mailboxes, a large flowering tree and a cozy back lounge with a fireplace.

The Australasian cuisine inspired by Executive Chef Brad Farmerie’s London training and travels through Australia, New Zealand and the East features a menu that “knows no ethnic borders”. The restaurant was awarded a coveted Michelin Star in the 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 New York Guides.
PUBLIC also received a myriad of awards for its design, including ‘Best Restaurant Graphics’ and ‘Best Restaurant Design’ by the James Beard Foundation.

  • "Even better than my last visit, the Australia/New Zealand sourced ingredients make for a gastronomic extravaganza. Our server was fantastic - very knowledgeable and delightful, and my overseas guest was very impressed. A very extensive wine list with good choices below $50 make this a Michelin-starred restaurant that is lighter on the wallet than most, and much more relaxed too. Can't until my next visit."

  • "My sisters birthday so we thought a good restaurant, a great night. It was 50/50 nice/disappointing. Sunday supper was original but the taste of 2/5 rounds was not good. Strange combinations. Too sour. And too raw. We dine in different restaurants bistro/Michelin star. But this tasted like they thought they were kings but in fact were farmers... The waiter Joey forgot to serve us wine, brought the bill without asking if we'd like coffee/thea. Really strange. The cocktailbar nextdoor was ok."

  • "There's a lot to recommend this restaurant. The setting is beautiful and the food is outstanding. The tables are a little close together but not so much as to be a real problem. The only issue I've noticed after two visits is the service, particularly at the start. This time we were left for over 10 minutes with no menus or wine, just glasses of water. Even after chasing our waitress it still took a while before things started moving. It's inconsistent with a restaurant of this class and they really need to sharpen up."

  • "My girl friends took me here for my birthday. We didn't reveal it was a special occasion, so not sure if they would have done anything, but the food was tasty. The waitstaff was helpful in recommending dishes and wine. Other than a bit of a wait with my reservation, while half of the restaurant was empty, we had a pleasant experience."

  • "I was somewhat underwhelmed by my dinner however others in my party seemed happier. I had the Red Snapper,which was an odd mix of flavors and a tiny portion of fish with lots of potatoes.The duck looked good and the cauliflower soup was excellent. The smallest desserts I've seen, don't think about sharing, at least not the chocolate cake! The staff is well meaning but very young and inexperienced..The place itself is charming and well designed. Nice for a romantic evening."

  • "We had high hopes for this dinner reservation as it was recommended by a close friend who loves her food. Unfortunately there must have been a change of chef! The atmosphere in Public is great - very vibrant and I loved the atmosphere. Unfortunately the food left us feeling disappointed. It was very over flavoured and my veal was tough. The majority of the waiting staff were attentive and polite although unfortunately one member of front of house made us feel unwelcome. I would struggle to recommend this restaurant given the high price for below average food."

  • "For expats that may be missing Aussie/ NZ, or if you want to sample some Australian or New Zealand wine/ food - Public is a good start. I took some work colleagues here, we steered away from the Aussie/ NZ options as we wanted to focus on local wine and produce. We enjoyed the scallops, pork, wine and chocolate dessert. On a minor downside, I had the duck, which was cooked perfectly, however the potato sitting underneath the duck was too salty. I also had the cheese plate, I would've liked the server to have explained what cheeses were on my plate. In saying this though, I think Public is a good venue to take work colleagues as it has a great selection of food and wine with a great atmosphere."

  • "Ate at Saxon & Parole the day before, which I can highly recommend. Public was equally good but the ambiance was a bit better because the noise level was more conducive for conversations. Waitress was fabulous. Not only was she very knowledgable about the menu and the wine, she had a great sense of humor. Food was incredible, especially the lentil appetizer."

We had the curried cauliflower soup and fried oysters to start; Sea trout and pork tenderloin for our mains and a cheese plate for dessert. We also had a bottle of the "invisible man" Cab-Shiraz wine -- highly recommend everything we had!"

  • "Snowy-chilled night outside and the staff made us feel warmly-taken care of on our anniversary evening dinner, the night before Valentine's Day. The sea trout and risotto and pork loin and belly were incredible. And the staff were lovely as ever, with a great Semillon (Brokenwood 2007) recommendation from Paul the sommelier. Excellent, as usual."

  • "I took clients to Public last Saturday; I'd been wanting to go for a long time, more so since in 2014 they qualified again for a Michelin star (6th year in a row!). The wait staff was very gracious and attentive, and appetizers were really good - sardines especially were amazing. But we waited a very long time for our entrees (they showed up with bowls of soup for all to compensate for the wait, which was cool on their part). But entrees were less than impressive - chewy and hard, they seemed somewhat overcooked. The restaurant was quite packed on a Saturday night witha few large parties which might explain the lenghty service and mishap with entrees. I'd still give it another try based on the wait staff friendliness and overall ambiance."

  • "The decor is charming and warm, altough if you are looking for a romantic set-up, you might find yourself a bit close to your neighbors. That said the food was great and I advise you to try the scallops, and the dessert flight (why settle for one, when you can taste three?). The service was perfect and they even took the time to read my comments (online reservation) and adapt to itl. To finish, try the cocktails, if you like them witrh a kick!"

  • "It was our first time to Public, on a snowy Monday night which helped us to book last minute. The restaurant was calm (probably because of the weather), we took a drink at the bar (nice but small cocktail list) and then headed to our tables. The food defined as Fusion is really good, and innovative. This was a really nice place, maybe a bit pricy but I guess that's because they got a star from Michelin guide in 2013."

  • "There were 6 of us and we each had a great meal. It's a very interesting menu, the food was beautifully presented, and the blend of flavors was wonderful. The service... superb! An attentive waiter who really seemed to enjoy his job, and knew just when to be at the table and when to leave us alone. The sommelier was on it! ....very friendly and very informative. The interior design is intelligent and cool, and the lighting was perfect. So fun to go to a restaurant where you know a real effort is being made at every level."

  • "The atmosphere was very good the food was tasty, maybe a little salty at time but overall a tasty experience. Make sure you order the Hama Hama oysters! The wine list by the glass is not bad either. The jury is still out on the deserts which didn't absolutely knock me out. The wait staff was attentive and friendly offering as much help as possible.   • "My girlfriend and I chose PUBLIC for our 4 year anniversary. We were warmly greeted at the door, coats checked, and sat within 2 minutes. We were offered two different tables in various areas - the fireplace and by the garage door. We chose the garage door, the fireplace felt a bit tight. We were greeted by 2 glasses of sparkling to cheers for our anniversary. We had the mushroom ceviche - perfect combination of textures and flavors - really a highlight. We also had the grilled scallops, good. For entrees we had the roasted duck with bok choy and fried cassava - really great flavors and the duck was cooked perfectly. Also shared the osso bucco, a bit dry unfortunately, but still good. Overall great service and dinner was enjoyable."

  • "We had our New Years Eve dinner at PUBLIC and absolutely loved everything about our experience there. The decor is very industrial chic. The lighting in the restaurant is beautiful and gives it a very warm feel. This is definetly a great spot for a romantic dinner or group. Most importantly, the food was amazing! My boyfriend and I are both self-proclaimed foodies and this was right up our alley. For the appetizer, I had the foie gras and he had the oysters with caviar. Both were insanely delicious. For the main course he had the red snapper and I had the rack of lamb. My rack of lamb was so perfect I think I stopped after each bite to say how amazing everything was. If you want great food in a fun/beautiful setting come to PUBLIC."

  • "We went as a group. Service was good. The ac was blowing on us all night. They said they would turn it down but never did. Food was just ok. The bacon sounded good but it was way too salty. Main dishes were inventive but nothing special. The wine list was awful. Too many Australian wines. Great space though."
