Diner Reviews
  • "May try again but we asked for outdoor seating on Open Table and they told us they don't even look at those special requests from the computer. Steak way overdone and we had to sit inside."

  • "Portions needed to be larger for the price you pay. Also not good at making sangria. However, the food tasted good and was prepared well."

  • "We always enjoy dining in this historic building. The exposed beams and stone walls would tell an interesting story if they could talk. The food is always very good. My wife had prime rib which was excellent and better than the rib eye steak that I had, but there rib eye was also very good. We both had the cheese bisque soup and that was very good. We always like the pretzel bread that is served before dinner. We will come back to the Public Landing again and again. It is always a treat."

  • "We have been coming to the Public Landing for special occasions for many years. The food is always delicious and the service great. Save room for their famous dessert basket made of caramelized sugar and filled with a white chocolate mousse and topped with berries. The setting along the I & M Canal in the historic Gaylord Building in downtown Lockport can't be beat. In nice weather, outdoor dining is a delightful option."

  • "This was a very pleasant and relaxing eating experience, reasonable pricing, good food and drinks. We made a 6 pm reservation, arrived at 5:55 and was seated right away our waiter was very polite and knowledgeable Of the menu and specials, would recommend to all!!"

  • "We chose Public Landing to celebrate a family birthday, and what a great choice! When we first arrived--not all of us at once--the service was a little hit and miss, but picked up as more of us arrived. The food was terrific, and the service much better when we had ordered. We dined outdoors, and as a result, we didn't feel too self-conscious about our own noise. The guest of honor's dog was also welcome! We will definitely be back!"

  • "We were seated by a window indoors so we could enjoy the view of the patio while we ate lunch. Our server was excellent; she was efficient and helpful but never hovered over us or made us feel rushed. She was very friendly, but not overly familiar or chatty -- very professional. The spicy calamari was excellent, as were our very generous entree salads. I would love to go back for dinner sometime, because I the the setting is very romantic."

  • "We went to the Public Landing to celebrate my wife's Birthday and we were not disappointed. My wife had a Filet Mignon (Prime) and I had the Pork Tenderloin. Both meals were very good. Waiter was attentive and support staff assisted the waiter in making sure that we were served appropriately. Appetizers and Salad selection was somewhat limited, but enjoyable and fresh. Will return again for a dinner."

  • "Have only dined outdoors - it's one of the nicer alfresco dining experiences. Patio has a large tree, view of historic building housing the restaurant and generally the surrounding area is nice"

  • "We went to Public Landing to celebrate all our family birthdays together. It was a nice restaurant for a special occasion. Food was delicious and service was great. We chose Public Landing because of their gluten-free options. Those are hard to find. The whole family enjoyed their meals and said they will plan on going there again in the future."

  • "We hadn't been to Public Landing in a while (we used to go quite often). The menu has changed significantly since we were there last. The service was friendly and helpful, couldn't have been better....but the food? Just meh. We started with the appetizer trio (bruschetta, crab cakes, salmon carpaccio) which were good. We didn't receive the pretzel bread everyone else got with their salads. The mashed sweet potatoes (which were way too prevalent on the menu) were cold and looked unappetizing. The sugar snap peas (also listed as a side for way too many entrees) were tasteless. My turkey was ok, somewhat cold, as were my husband's crab cakes. We have to go back for a family party later this year - hope it's better than this was."

  • "The food and atmosphere was nice. Great day to eat outside. The food and service were good."

  • "Overall, the quality of the main course my wife and I had was mediocre. She had the small filet and it was totally lacking in taste. I had the crab cakes and was equally disappointed. They were equally without taste and generally flat. The sauce that came with them was of no help. Fortunately, the meal was covered by a gift card and we decided to not to make an issue. Otherwise, if it was cash out of our pocket, we would have complained."

  • "I generally hold lunch business meetings at Public Landing. It is quiet. Servers are not intrusive and try to be sensitive of their timing to break into the conversation. The food is always excellent and I can count on Public Landing to be a great place to build business relationships."

  • "Exceptionally beautiful setting. A wedding was going on outside the evening we were there, which made the scene even more special. Gorgeous patio to which you can bring your dog at any time to dine with you as long as your pet is well-behaved, which is an extra perk for the animal lover. Service was prompt and courteous and food was excellent with some less-common choices like duck, which my fiancé loved. If you love Illinois history and a nostalgic setting, along with great food and service, you will love this restaurant."

  • "My wife and I have always had great meals here. Requested the lobster bisque when making the reservation and sure enough, it was on the menu that night."
    Dined on 5/31/2014
  • "This is my favorite place to take my wife on special occasions. The steak is always cooked perfectly to our expectations and the staff are very attentive and make us feel welcome. Dining in the patio is a perfect way to enjoy summer."

  • "Public Landing is our go-to restaurant for special occasions. The food is outstanding, the staff is friendly and knowledgeable and we always find the drive worth it."

  • "We had reservations for four at six, and we were seated immediately upon arrival. We shared the three hors d'oeuvre sampler, with crab cakes and fried asparagus and it was superb. I had the salmon with garlic mashed potatoes, which was prepared to perfection. My wife had the sirloin steak, which was cooked to her liking, and she said it was moist and delicious. Our friends had lobster tails, which, judging from their empty plates, they also enjoyed. We had a lovely evening."

  • "We met with friends at this restaurant. Neither of us had been before and both of us had incorrect directions given by our GPS units. The building itself is located between a canal and railroad tracks and it's very appealing. We had reservations but our table was not ready for more than 15 minutes. The restaurant is quite nice inside but the noise level was very high. We each had something different to eat and we rated our meals just average. Because of the noise level we probably won't return. There is a patio outside that wasn't in use on our night because it was too chilly."

  • "This was probably my 10th time at Public Landing and my boy friend and I had a wonderful dinner complete with a scenic panorama. The only glich was having the main course delivered before I had finished my salad. I am not a fan of rushing courses. I will remind the wait staff on my next trip there. Otherwise, it was perfect!!!"

  • "Thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Great ambience and above average service. Server knew the menu well and for first-timers, it's important to have that guidance. Ordered the special of the night, sea bass. Thought the meal was tasty but portion too small. My wife and I will , and have, already referred others since our recent visit. Can't wait to return after the patio opens."

  • "Have been going to Public Landing for many years and the food quality is always excellent, no matter what we order. Salad portion and small plate sizes are large as well as the main entrees. Wait staff is attentive, yet not overbearing. The pretzel bread is amazingly delicious! Do not leave without trying one of their wonderful desserts, too! Daily drink specials are only $5.00. I've had the yummy Bloody Mary and the Margarita.. And their wine choices are always good, too. Fish is fresh and the salads tasty. Don't forget that the beef is tender and cooked to your specifications. We have had a bridal shower, there, too, so groups are welcome, too! A great restaurant in the heart of historic Lockport with a lot of charm!"

  • "This restaurant is Lockport's gem. The food phenomenal. Seafood special was fresh. Good cocktails. I had not been here in 6 years. I loved this evening out. "

  • "My wife's fish looked great but was only warm in some spots and ice cold in others as if it had been cooked in a faulty microwave. My pot-roast was dry, not very tender, lacked the flavor of a good home made pot roast. We were disappointed in the food quality for the price. "

  • "We were a party of four who chose the Public Landing as a place to dine before attending a concert at the Rialto Theater a few miles away in Joliet. Arriving at 4:30, we were seated (as requested) at a window table with a view of the small park adjacent to the I&M canal. The building is 175 years old, of typical limestone, and was charmingly adapted in part for this restaurant. The canal museum is in an adjacent area convenient for visiting before or after a meal. Our waitress was friendly and efficient. The wine list is not very extensive but that did not matter to us. Two members of our party had pork tenderloin, one had crab cakes and one had blackened cod with lobster sauce and a small skewer of shrimp -- all delicious."
