Unique menu items that should appease whatever you're in the mood for. A little pricey, but well suited to its neighbors (Barrio and Bin wine bar). Great service and an amazing lounge downstairs in the evenings.

Love the huge arched windows looking out onto Mears park. Service was attentive and informative. Specially priced wine and champagne list for Restaurant Week was a nice touch. Nice decor and excellent renovation of the space. Food was very good to great. Salad was excellent. Biscuits with honey butter and jalapeño jelly delicious. Duck confit and black truffle pasta were great. Pork chop was seared and seasoned just right, generous portion, maybe a touch overdone. Empanadas were tasty but dough was too thick. Maple cheesecake was delicious. Chocolate molten raspberry cake was decadent. We were overstuffed and satisfied at meals end. Could not completely finish desserts. We added calamari appetizer to start and it was very good.

10/19/14 Brunch: Omelette of the day was ordinary which is not acceptable at a restaurant of this caliber. The eggs benedict were fine but a little more Hollandaise would have been appreciated, it is such a good sauce.

The place looks great and service was good, but the crab cakes, salad, and calamari we ordered were pretty bland. I hoping this gets better because we really would like to see another great place to eat succeed in mears park.

My wife and I dined at Public on 10/16/2014 and had a very good experience. The waiter recommended a wine for my wife and offered a taste, which was nice. There was a mix up and an extra glass of wine was poured, and they let us have that. I had the Filet, which was very good, with my last bite being a bit fatty, but just fine. Pretty good soup and salad. My wife enjoyed the burger which she said was very clean tasting, if not a little bland. The banana cream pie was also a good dessert. Overall, no issues with the meal, some nice service, and everything was generally above average.

My friends and I found the food, server, and ambience to be very good. However, the portions were very small (estimate ~1/4 cup of grits, 2 thin carrot and 2 asparagus pieces, and a small portion of short ribs) for the price of $26. It was our first time there, so I would at least give it another try.

We went on a Monday night so the restaurant was not busy. SERVICE WAS GREAT, food was excellent. Portions were on the smaller side but extremely flavorful - I had salmon which was excellent. Friend had scallops which she said were wonderful - they looked great. Guys had short ribs which they both enjoyed. Started with tomato soup for one, french onion for two and a salad - all were great. Noticed other reviews mentioned noise - it's a louder space, we had a booth and it wasn't busy so it was fine.

As usual the food was fabulous. We all had filet mignon and it was cooked to perfection. For some reason my friend's granddaughter did not finish her French onion soup; Imdo not know whether or not she is a fussy eater. It looked fine to me. We all loved our desserts and salads as well.

Ok this is a special place. The dining room and bar and lounge are like a movie set of movie you want to be in. Huge ceiling - humungous round windows like from blade runner - exposed ceiling - exposed brick - beautiful people - welded tin curtains - post apocalyptic blade runner meets restored warehouse. So cool. The menu is a great mix of favorites with an unexpected twist to them. The Calamari is fresh and crunchy and enough for 4 people. The mussels were tasty. Goat cheese salad was creamy and bitter with crunchy peppercorns. Pork chop was tasty but on the smaller side. Banana Cream Pie is out of this world but should be renamed "Banana Torte". It is a layered dessert with a pretzel crust and layers of bananas and walnuts.

The overall ambiance was nice, the staff was great (very friendly and not pushy as we sat for a good 2 hrs between drinks to appetizer to dessert) but when it came to our meal I think some of us where a little disappointed in portion sizes for spending a little over $200 (Mussels and Scallop ceviche absolutely tasty, Lobster pasta was a small serving as well as the short rib, Banana Pie amazing, Breadpudding was hard and tough to cut into, we named it bread meatloaf) we all left talking about how we might have to stop for something to eat afterwards. Possibly the server could have mentioned getting extra sides etc. Sadly I will not be back and from the sounds from the rest of the table they would all agree.

Went here for the first time. Service was very good. It's a beautiful space, overlooking Mears Park. Felt like the food was average or slightly better. May have had higher expectations after seeing the pricing. And it wasn't just me, but half of the party said the same thing. Went down to the lounge for a drink after dinner. I'll definitely try it again but won't rush back to do so.

My favorite feature is the huge windows overlooking Mears Park. Our dinners were fabulous-- Scallops, beet salad, lobster linguini and banana cream pie. Their take on all the dishes is very thoughtful, innovative, beautiful and entirely delicious. Only negative is how chilly it is by those gorgeous windows. I will dress warmer next time. Since Public has only been open for a two months, we were expecting some rough edges. There were none. We had a booth, the last in the line of booths, and that may have helped minimize noise. The service was perfect -- knowledgeable, friendly to just the right degree--and the food was terrific. Calamari--never had it so tender and delectable, and the serving was plenty for apps for three. Cioppino--rich sauce, lots of great seafood. Likewise for dining partners' meals. Kudos to the owner, chefs, and staff at Public! We'll be back. Soon.

A friend of ours recommended we try Public Kitchen, she hadn't even been there herself! She had heard from others how great of a place it is & shared it with us. We were so happy we went there! So we highly recommended it back to her! The whole area where it is located, in St. Pau,l is just lovely. Beautiful views outside and many other cute places near the restaurant. St. Paul is such a wonderful city and this restaurant makes you appreciate it that much more. We will definitely go back, whether it be for cocktails, lunch or dinner. Take the time to go to their website..it's wonderful to read the history of the area and of their amazing establishment. It's open our eyes on St. Paul and we have lived in this area for over 25 years.

This was my first time to Public and I really liked it. I had the grilled cheese with beef brisket and it was amazing, the beef was very tender, the bread was grilled perfectly. Someone else that I was with had the soup salad combo and it was not enough food. But maybe that's ok because then she had room for dessert! The open layout is great and the bar is huge! A good selection of wine, beer and drinks, including Rush River which is relatively local from River Falls, WI. The downstairs looks like a great place to go in the evening, I'll definitely be back!

Gotta try the biscuits with jalapeño jam. And find something with the bacon jam! Our server was attentive, knowledgeable, fun and helped us accommodate a food allergy in our group. Nice new addition to the downtown Mears Park scene. Beautiful inside, but we opted for the outdoor seating recently on one of the last nice days of summer. Very nice row of restaurants lining up there, each with its own twist on outdoor space. Meals were good but not great. Service was slow, but we were in no hurry. I decided to try this new restaurant for my husband's and mine 19th Anniversary dinner after reading about it in the Pioneer Press Food Section of the paper. The food was good. I had the chicken ravioli and my husband had the burger. We both shared the crab cakes for an appetizer which were deep fried and a little too brown for our taste. The service is one area they could work on. Our waiter was slow and inattentive and just dull. When making the reservations on line they asked if there was anything they should know and I did mention that it was our anniversary but did nothing with this information. Why ask it? We told our waiter it was our anniversary and he did mention our dessert was on the house which was a nice surprise.

Met some friends for brunch...other than one little hiccup with the menu - a great time was had by all. Food was solid, good, interesting. I ordered sausage and biscuits, which I grew up eating and rarely find in Minnesota...execution was good. Could have used some more heat but I would guess for the Scandinavia crowd it would be perfectly peppery. Service was friendly and attentive but not too much. We sat for a good hour with drinks before ordering and never felt rushed.

The view of Mears Park is nice, as is the decor of the restaurant. The menu was not as extensive as I would have liked. Appetizers-cheddar biscuits were good, crab cakes had too thick of a coating on the outside. Entrees- daughter had the filet, which was good, husband' s steak was not as good. I had the salmon and it was undercooked. The main complaint I have with the food is that it was not hot. The food arrived at the table barely warm. I would have a hard time recommending this restaurant to anyone, as there are several other great dining establishments within St. Paul and surrounding areas.

We were seated and then waited for 20 minutes before anyone brought us water or menu' s. We ordered our drinks and that took another 20 minutes. Once we decided to order our food mine came out and was very good, my wife's steak came out and she ordered it meduim rare and it came out well done. Needless to say our waitress didn't say a thing or offer to comp anything. She didn't even ask if we wanted second drinks or anything. We had to ask for everything that we needed. She would walk by and not say a word as food was there and my wife's was not, not very attentive. So, we will give this place another chance but it is overpriced for the portions you get and drinks are average. We do like the location of this restaurant.

Public is a fun spot in Mears Park. The food is good and wait staff was friendly, but slow. The restaurant has a lot of energy and was very noisy by the time we left at 7:45 on a Saturday night. My husband and I are vegetarian and although we found nice choices to share, there weren't many options. If they could add a few more vegetarian options, we would love that. I was also a bit disappointed that the only bread option was the jalapeño biscuits for $6.00. They were tasty, but I missed having some kind of bread basket.

If you've read other reviews about this place, you already know that the heating/cooling system isn't working properly yet, so be prepared for it to be very warm inside.
