The location, space, lounge and overall ambiance is great. We had the fondue which was a fun treat. Unfortunately our, entres were less than par. Once was overcooked with nice flavor and the other was good pretty well, but had ZERO flavor

The view of Mears Park is nice, as is the decor of the restaurant. The menu was not as extensive as I would have liked. Appetizers-cheddar biscuits were good, crab cakes had too thick of a coating on the outside. Entrees- daughter had the filet, which was good, husband' s steak was not as good. I had the salmon and it was undercooked. The main complaint I have with the food is that it was not hot. The food arrived at the table barely warm. I would have a hard time recommending this restaurant to anyone, as there are several other great dining establishments within St. Paul and surrounding areas.

We were seated and then waited for 20 minutes before anyone brought us water or menu' s. We ordered our drinks and that took another 20 minutes. Once we decided to order our food mine came out and was very good, my wife's steak came out and she ordered it meduim rare and it came out well done. Needless to say our waitress didn't say a thing or offer to comp anything. She didn't even ask if we wanted second drinks or anything. We had to ask for everything that we needed. She would walk by and not say a word as food was there and my wife's was not, not very attentive. So, we will give this place another chance but it is overpriced for the portions you get and drinks are average. We do like the location of this restaurant.

Public is a fun spot in Mears Park. The food is good and wait staff was friendly, but slow. The restaurant has a lot of energy and was very noisy by the time we left at 7:45 on a Saturday night. My husband and I are vegetarian and although we found nice choices to share, there weren't many options. If they could add a few more vegetarian options, we would love that. I was also a bit disappointed that the only bread option was the jalapeño biscuits for $6.00. They were tasty, but I missed having some kind of bread basket.

Overall we enjoyed our night out, but the high temp in the restaurant really made it hard to enjoy what was a great meal otherwise. Our server said their ventilation system wasn't working. Unfortunate to sweat through our whole experience! Cheese fondue was good, but accomaniments we're far under portioned. When we asked for more bread we were given 2 more slices which still wasn't enough. Short rib and filet were awesome. Worth the trip, but maybe wait until the air is fixed.

Nice addition to Lowertown and a good option in between crowd-type, food and prices of the Bulldog and Heartland. Lovely wine and inventive drink selections. Apps offered a good variety and deep flavors. Salads were crisp and refreshing while entrees were decent, however the steak eaters in the group noted that the steaks were forgettable. The best item of the night was the banana cream pie - don't miss it. Trendy, warehouse atmosphere that made it extremely hard to hear/talk w/companions.

We would have been much happier if the price point on the entrees were $5 less. The food was good but not great and the portions were small. The pork chopped was cooked perfectly and tasted fine but was served with a very skimpy salsa like salad and nothing else. Rather high at $24 for something we could have made at home equally well. The lobster linguini had a lovely flavor and lots of lobster but the lobster was hard and the portion was ~ 1 cup, again with nothing to go with it, not even bread. Nothing was offered for free. It's a fun place, the food was good, not great, but overpriced and skimpy. I haven't finished an entree in years, but I did here. $126 for 1 cocktail, 1 beer, 2 glasses of wine, 2 entrees, 1 appetizer ($6) and tip.

Thought about trying something new, but should have walked next door. Everything but the scallop ceviche was a miss. Bones still in the undercooked salmon, cold roasted cauliflower, watery and underseasoned beet salad made this experience a one shot deal for now. Service was slower than we'd like, but I understand that it's new. But when you're offered pepper, only to have it never come to your table, that's another thing. Nothing wow'd me here and I think you can get better and more unique dishes at Heartland or even Barrio. Total disappointment, and I'd avoid until the kinks are clearly rooted out, which may take some time.

Our service was quite good, and the setting is really quite nice. Beyond that, however, it was a really lackluster dining experience. First, the cocktail at the beginning of the meal was totally unbalanced and just tasted "off." Whiskey, pear, lime... but all you could taste was lime. As for the food, it was odd that they were out of a menu entree by 7:45 PM, but that's not the worst thing in the world. But the food itself was just... fine. The cioppino was okay -- squid a little rubbery, and it all looked like rather a mess, to be honest. It tasted fine, but the flavors again could have been more balanced. And while I'm not one to quibble about portion size usually, this was rather a meager portion for the $25 price tag.

Great location, interesting atmosphere, but very aloof waiter. The waiter took more time figuring out what kind of water we wanted instead of getting our drink order. The muscles were bland and not cooked enough, crab cakes we're more like french toast with crab -- it had too much breading - the crab flovor was lost. The ribs were served cold w luke warm sauce. Lobster linguini was overcooked . The chippino was served w/very little to no broth. We ended with drinks downstairs which was very enjoyable, banana cream pie was very good. I would try it again I think it's more of a burger / salad restaurant and needs to relax a little on the service not so stuffy they need to work on getting drinks out faster and food cooked correctly.

My husband works at Securian, down the road from this restaurant, and enjoyed three memorable lunches there. When we had a free night away from the kids, he made reservations at Public Kitchen + Bar as a special treat. "You wont believe how wonderful this place is!" he kept saying. After a dinner of crab cakes, salads, chicken ravioli and lobster linguini (All to die for, buy the way!), we headed to the bar on the lower level and sipped our cocktails surrounded by exposed limestone and brick, gilded-framed artwork, and furniture that we'd like to bring home! A few days later I needed to take a friend out for her birthday, and once again we aimed our car to Mears Park, to Public Kitchen + Bar!

Don't be fooled by the few menu items. At first glance you see common American items like a Noyes Burger, Short Ribs, Pork Ribs, and Beet Salad. However the chef prepares these up excellently. I ordered BBQ Pork Ribs and my Wife had the Beef Short Ribs for a special occasion and it was so delicious we refused to share. We started out with some tempura calamari which was also delightful. The batter was light like tempura is supposed to be and the dipping sauce was a perfect match. I really found a gem on the cocktails list in the New-Mahattan drink. I will definitely be going back for that drink. I checked the place out a few days earlier to see if it was good enough for a date night. Try the burger. Bourbon Bacon says it all.

This is a great idea -- the room is very well done, the service is very good, and the prices are "not bad." But the missing ingredient is in the kitchen. Almost all of our food was bland and lacking in flavor. Take the beet salad, for example. It's as if the chef decided he didn't want anything to mask the flavor of the beets, so he/she did nothing to them. No salt, no butter, hardly any dressing -- just the bland beets (and they weren't that good ones to start with). The standards at neighboring places (like Heartland, for example) are much higher. The kitchen crew at the Public will have to get hopping if they want much return business.

First off the atmosphere is great, the lounge is a great spot to have a drink, the service was great. The was the one downside. We had the lobster linguini and beef short ribs. The lobster linguini was so salty my wife couldn't eat it, I traded her and ate that. It was very salty. The beef short ribs were fine tender but nothing special. I will probably be back but may give them a few months to work out the kinks, I will definitely be back to have a drink. The atmosphere for that is great.

We've eaten dinner here twice and lunch once since it opened. The staff couldn't have been more helpful. They all really knew the menu and offered helpful information. The building is spectacular. We've eaten on the patio twice (once for lunch and once for dinner with the dog) and in the dining room once for a celebration. We have also stopped in the lounge for an after dinner cocktail. If you like banana cream pie, do yourself a favor and try this unique and delicious version of an old time favorite.

Restaurant service is first impression of a place right? First tried to sit us in inferior table tops with several booths open. Dead at 7pm friday. Lounge service for individual drinks good. Ordered bottle of wine. Waitress Didn't offer cork or initial tasting, had no idea what I was talking about when I asked for one, ignored my request, and this was after it took her ages to open the bottle. No excuse for naive staff instruction. Ordered the: beet salad, romaine salad, crab cakes, mussels, bourbon burger med. rare, scallop ceviche and Stra/rhubarb crisp. Most of the food was great. Dessert was dry, not helped by stingingly small scoop of ice-cream. Waitress wouldn't give straight answer on mussel portion size. Is main course size.
