While the food was delicious and the service attentive, I was not impressed. We were in and out of the restaurant in an hour. We tried to take our time choosing our drinks appetizers and main course but we were ultimately rushed out the door. Unless you have told your server that you have to plans following dinner, there is no need to be rushed. We won't be back

Overall, experience was pretty good. Once we paid the bill, however, our waiter was never seen again. Place was not nearly full so we were not keeping a table from getting turned, so we stayed to visit with friends a bit longer. Waiter never refilled water carafe, or asked if we were interested in coffee or an after-dinner drink. Like the space and ambiance. Great bar area downstairs that we’ll have to check out sometime.

A beautiful space and good service, but menu and cocktail list needs tweaking. I had to send my cocktail back and ordered something else…the first one had so much ginger, it overpowered the other ingredients. Everything we ordered for food was good, but overly salted….and I love salt! Even the banana cream pie was salty (served with a pretzel crust).

I was hesitant about going to Public because of the mixed reviews. Our visit was quite good. The food was much better than we anticipated - we had really great filets and ribs, plus unique starters (the ceviche and the jalapeño + cheddar biscuits) which were also good. We had a few craft cocktails (strong, good but not great) and a bill of over $130 with tip. Not sure if it was worth it on value since the plates were very small, no real sides to speak of with the entrees. But what we had was good, and our server was attentive without being too pushy.

Outstanding service, and great food for a reasonable price. I had a fantastic 8 oz Filet for only $29, which included sides, and my wife had the Lobster Linguini which had a fun presentation and tasted delicious. Overall, highly recommend this relatively new restaurant in downtown St. Paul.

Friend and i each had Short ribs: outstanding! She had Salad with citrus vinaigrette: delicious. We shared a Creme Brûlée: unexpected citrusy, absolutely fabulous. Neither one of us was full, just kind-of satisfied. My husband had Lobster linguine: delicious but small portion. About 1 generous cupful. He also had the Asparagus side dish: $8 for 12 small thin spears. My normal sized man had to ask for crostini, because he was still hungry. Our server was knowledgeable, personable, subtle and kind. Loved her.

Initial service was good. But when the entrees arrived my ribs were barely lukewarm and the asparagus was cold. Took 15 minutes for replacements to be served while my dinner companion finished his meal. Their excuse was that they were unexpectedly very busy. No matter how busy you are, you do not serve customers cold food. Not worth the money.

This was our first visit and we did like the ambiance. Three of us in our party love steamed mussels which we ordered for an appetizer. They were cold, tasted old and dry with a nasty fish flavor. We told the waiter and he did take it off our bill which was very nice and smart. Out of the 4 entrees that we ordered the braised beef short ribs and the beef filet were very good. The chicken ravioli and the lobster linguini weren't bad, but not that good. The ravioli were so small and not very warm. No special offers for the birthday girl. The chocolate molten cake was dry...first time that has ever happened to us. A couple of us are "foodies", so it was just OK for us.

Waiter was HORRIBLE! Told him we were in somewhat of a hurry as we were going to a concert. Waited an hour for meal, then only brought 3 of 4 dinners, had to wait another 10 minutes for the 4th (chicken). Saw other tables who came in after us being served LONG before us. Waiter took 2 of our drink orders, ignored others and walked away. Chicken was rubbery, other meals were OK, but small. Will never return!

This made so many lists of "best new restaurants," and I have no idea why. The prices looked very reasonable, but that's because the portions are so small. My small wife can never finish a dinner out, but she did here, and was still hungry after she ate. Really overpriced. And they charge extra for bread??!! Talk about tacky. A real bait & switch. Wines -- whether by glass or bottle -- are ridiculously overpriced. Was talked into trying a locally brewed gin in my martini, then saw it cost me $11.50. Ridiculous. Totally overpriced. If this is typical of some new trend in restaurants, leave me out of it. Not a good addition to Saint Paul's restaurant scene.

The restaurant had good ambiance, but the portions were ridiculously small. Everyone at my table just kind of looked at their plates in dismay. We couldn't even initially determine if this was our meal our not because the size of the entrees. Our food came out lukewarm to cold. This is one of those restaurants that you leave feeling hungry because they didn't give you enough food for way too much money. They will only get by for so long on their ambiance. Even after having our entrees comped, I dropped $53.00 on a few drinks and a tiny salad. Very disappointing experience. We all left the restaurant feeling hungry.

This new restaurant is beautiful, the wait staff are friendly hospitable. I found that the wine list is very good but they need more wines for purchase by the glass & the bottle prices are spendy. We ate upstairs in the dining area and shared our dishes; which were the mixed green salad, beet salad, lobster linguine, cioppino, seasonal fruit crisp and a bottle of wine. All the servings were appropriate in portion size, but I feel they price could be lowered. I could taste an anise flavor in the lobster linguine which was appealing to me. The cioppino was excellent! I would order in again, great flavor, seafood was cooked properly along with two slices of toasted banquette. The seasonal fruit crisp was disappointing, the crisp was doughy.

I should have been warned when the server did not suggest how the restaurant usually prepared nor asked my preference. Despite the cross-hatched burn marks, the modestly thin, twenty-four dollar chop, elevated, perhaps deceptively, upon a spicy slaw, was served at room temperature. Why did I not ask it to be reheated? It would have been over-done. The side of grits, lacked the distinctive flavor promised by the menu, and, again at six dollars was served in container shaped to emphasize the appearance of volume. If it walks like a chain...

The Pork chop was amazing and the presentation of all of our meals was beautiful.Even though I had asked not to be, we were seated near the bustling kitchen and thought that it was going to be way too noisy but we were able to carry on our conversation around our table with just a few times that it became too loud for us to hear each other.

This was our first time dining here and it was a good experience. Our waiter was courteous and friendly and deserving of a very good rating but there was other servers who were disruptive and a little rude. Space is laid out nicely so that there is not a bad seat in the house. We had the biscuit appetizer and it was not very good. Or rather I should say it was pretty plain and not what I would expect for a place like this. However, the salad and 2 entries were very good. Overall, this a place we would certainly visit again.

Went for restaurant week and am always considerate of that fact, but good places should be spot on every time. Neighborhood is nice and trendy--parking hard to find, but free in the PM on the street. Decor is standard industrial--exposed brick, cool looking bar. Service is what made this place really weird. I didn't feel any of the staff, with the exception of one young hostess, who was warm or friendly. Our male server often quietly stared at us, offered no suggestions of what might be good, didn't know what wines to suggest. He awkwardly offered water (3 types: "sparkling, ice cold, and ambient"). Food was just okay--bad lamb empanadas, dry duck confit, but dessert was delicious. Must try the maple cheesecake with toasted marshmallow.

Pros: Great room, greeting upon entering was top notch. Service was impeccable. Cons: Started with mussels, they smelled and tasted funky and the broth was totally bland and uninteresting. My wife had the potato Gnocchi and said it was good. I had the Lobster linguini and it was one gelatinous mess at the bottom of a bowl. I could stick my for into what was there and pick the entire entree up in one hunk. It tasted old and looked like it sat under a heat lamp for a few hours. Pretty bad.

Food very flavorful but very slow service. Nearly 45 minutes between salad and entrees. We were with good friends so time passed easily but a free glass of wine would have gone further than the waiters' multiple apologies. Pork chop was over cooked but good flavor, tapas appetizers were bland and doughy, duck confit was excellent. Filet was perfectly done and very tasty. Love the space (it's gorgeous) and will return but we hope the quality comes way up.

Public Kitchen is a gem of a restaurant in Saint Paul overlooking Mears park. The food was delightful and service was extraordinary. The waitress and manager kept us well informed when one of the appetizers had run out and the cooking time for the next batch was 10-15 minutes. we were not in any rush so we waited for the appetizer. It was worth the wait...you gotta try the jalepeno/cheese biscuits served with jalepeno jelly and sweet butter.

The ambiance and historical location was great! Really decent food but wasn't blown out of the water and portions were good for women but most men I know would be disappointed. It was restuarant week so maybe the portions were intentionally smaller and the it It was loud and I expected that from reading comments so not a big deal!
