A word from Public House - Chattanooga
Several years ago, I decided that my future in the restaurant business would most likely not remain in the realm of fine dining and gourmands, but would rather lean towards the style of restaurant that I found myself frequenting most often - places that provided consistency and quality at a price that was fair for the quality of the food and experience. Public House plays to the comforts of good, solid food, while applying the principles of premium food products to a more casual setting. You will find all the fish is delivered from Foley’s in Boston, high quality steaks and a rotating selection of vegetable sides that are true to the region and season. You’ll also find a really good hamburger and fish sandwich, along with fun snacks and small plates that pair well with cocktails, beer and wine.

Diner Reviews
  • "The scallop appetizer and the carpaccio appetizer were the favorites. Service was very attentive and professional."

  • "Food was tasty and several good options on the menu. I had the pork tenderloin which was excellent."

  • "We totally enjoyed the food and the service. Very nice place and will definitely be coming back soon"

  • "Overall our dining experience was good. I will probably dine here again. However, we both had suggestions. I ordered the Pork Tenderloin. I felt the chutney was too strong for the pork. The tenderloin had a nice flavor but was completely overpowered by the chutney. My partner had the trout. It was very dry and was a little too fishy smelling for her taste. We were told that the trout was fresh but it did not taste fresh. The wine was good and the server was friendly and knowledgeable."

  • "The food here was delicious. Everything was perfect, from the wine, to the appetizers, to the main course. It is an upscale dining experience without being too pretentious. We had our kids with us, and there was even something on the menu to please them. Great experience!"

  • "Drove up from Florida on our way home to Chicago. Public House was great with excellent food. Pickled veggies so good. Great fun children's menu."

  • "We sat on the veranda in downtown Chattanooga by ourselves (they had closed it earlier, but our waiter let us sit outside). Excellent and knowledgeable service. Some interesting menu items with some great flavors both traditional and risque. Loved it from start to finish and highly recommend to other either visiting Chattanooga like us or even to locals that want a trip downtown for something different."

  • "Staff was super, the food was great. Our whole dining experience was outstanding."

  • "I recently took someone out on a first date and the Public House was my first choice. We were seated promptly, the food was delicious, and the service was good. Not a whole lot else you can ask for."

  • "I was visiting Chattanooga from Atlanta with my 13 year old niece. I had the fried chicken and to die for Mac n cheese. She had the cut with a fork steak. Then we finished off by sharing the peanut butter pie like eating a Reece's Peanut butter cup in a pie. The service was wonderful and can't wait to visit Chattanooga again to eat here again."

  • "This was our second time at the Public House, and as before, the service was great and the food was good. I tried the pot roast this time and my husband had the pork tenderloin, and both were fine, but not outstanding. For those dishes, it wasn't really worth the money we spent. Now, the praline caramel carrot cake is a different matter! Wow, it was wonderful, and so huge that I took half home. My husband loved his whiskey chocolate cheesecake, too. So thumbs up for desserts!"

  • "Great restaurant, excellent food, 50/50 chance of getting great service from server."

  • "Good atmosphere, location, menu variety. Relatively small lunch menu which I prefer with a good variety so you get the feeling they perfect each dish. I ordered the Braised pot roast, green beans, and the soup of the day. Great taste and temperature on each. The service was friendly but not intrusive. Will definitely use again as a meeting spot or date night getaway."

  • "Food was some of the very best and reasonably priced for such high quality. Dining room noise level was very loud due to a large party seated in a 3 or 4 table confit, they had to talk very loud for the person on the other side of the room to hear. They should have been seated in private dining room."

  • "The Public House should be on everyone's list when they visit Chatanooga. The food was excellent and the service was superb."

  • "Food was solid if a little uninspired - hit all the trendy notes (beets+goat cheese, brussels+bacon, etc.) without making any particular exciting preparation in any of them. Good neighborhood place, solid food, burgers cooked to perfection, but in the food, missing the small touches and personality flourishes that make for an exceptional food place. Cocktails solid but not excellent, too. Our server Will was super friendly, helpful and attentive, though the staff as a whole is surprisingly uninformed about the building - would've expected them to know a little about the history of the space but nobody seemed to know. Really big portions!"

  • "Overall we had a great meal. Well presented. Wife had shrimp and grits. Said they were the best she has ever had.y filet was cooked perfectly."

  • "The service was over the top also very quite. The pimento cheese is a great starter and everything is bought locally. Big plus."

  • "We ate here the day after Valentines. The restaurant is very nice inside and it has a romantic feel. The food was good. My husband had the duck confit, which I tasted and loved. I wished I had ordered it. I had the prime rib. I ordered it rare and it was cooked perfect. The one thing about it I didn't care for was it had been marinated in their house steak sauce and the meat was very sweet. If I had known the steak sauce wasn't on the side but used as a marinate I would not have gotten it. But it was ok. The mashed potatoes were wonderful, really good. All in all in was good. If we go back I'll defiantly not get anything with their house sauce on it, to sweet."

  • "We were a party of six, including a teen and a tween. Although the lunch menu isn't extensive, especially on Saturday when a daily special isn't offered, we all found dishes we like. We enjoyed a bottle of Malbec, very solid for its price point. The burger and pot roast were a big hit, and my younger boy really liked the gumbo which was the Soup of the Day. The Brussels sprouts offered as a side were a big hit, half of us ordered them and all three of us thought they were great. I think the Public House puts a lot of effort in to the side dishes they offer and that really helps the dining experience. Service was acceptable, but I've definitely had better at this restaurant. We'll definitely visit again."

  • "Public House always provides high quality, consistent food and service. Menu highlights for us are always the pimento cheese, the New York strip steak, and the grits. Best food around."

  • "My wife and I recently celebrated our Valentine's day at Public House on Feb 15th. This was our 2nd visit. My wife has celiacs (wheat gluten allergy). Originally, we had a great waiter who was intent on making sure we enjoyed our evening and who brought the chef out to talk to my wife about dining options. This time, our waitress told my wife there were only two plates on the menu that would work for her. When my wife dug further, there were other entrees that were GF, but paired with non-GF sides. So after much questioning, she was able to get something she could eat, but had to fight her way there. The food was exemplary, but the service soured the experience. Hit and miss if you have special dietary needs."

  • "Maybe it was the locally provided fresh meats and vegetables. Maybe it was the mastery of the chef. Maybe it was the genius of the owner. Or the spectacular service. Public House has it all. Don't miss it."

  • "My fiancé and I made a Valentines day reservation for 930 pm, but we got there a little early. We were not familiar with the building and entered through "The social" entrance. I think we looked like lost tourists, so a nice member of the wait-staff promptly walked us to the host station on the other side of the restaurant. They could not get us a table at time we showed up, but super friendly and said they would get us a table as soon as one opened up. We went back to the Social and the bar staff was excellent and attentive. We ended up getting a table about 15 minutes before or reservation time. The service was top notch; efficient and friendly, the food was great, but not quite equal to the value paid."

  • "I took my wife here for a Valentines Date. We Came a little early and had drinks at The Social bar before coming in for our meal. Both at the bar and the restaurant the staff was very friendly and helpful. We started of with the Quail and grits which was phenomenal. In fact my wife wanted that just to be the dinner. I had the prime rib which was a special they had and my wife had the fried chicken with homemade hot sauce, both of which were excellent especially the hot sauce for the chicken. We also shared a plate of garlic green beans which was pretty fantastic. This is a really calm and mellow place to eat. We will be going back to try some of there other enticing dishes."

  • "Public House has become one of our favorites lately. With a great cheese tray and a wonderful service group, we are loving it. Put that with some amazing food (Yes, the best burger I have ever had!) and we have a great night every time."

  • "Went there for Valentines Day 2014. Here are my thoughts on our evening there: Difficult to find- not well identified and entrance did not pop out "here we are". Layout and atmosphere was very good. Service was great! Drinks were very good. Salad (Caesar) was sub par Soup was pretty good. Appetizer was excellent Prime Rib was not very tender, and nothing special. Duck Confit was good but could have been better. We enjoyed the experience overall, but it didn't rank in our top Chattanooga spots. Would have expected it to be stepped up a bit on Valentines Day."

  • "Great food and service. Our two kids (ages 8 and 10) also loved the food which is really saying something."
    Dined on 2/8/2014
  • "What especially struck me was the prompt service. The food came more quickly than I usually expect, but we didn't feel rushed. The roast beef was fork tender as promised; the wine sauce was a bit rich for my taste (but I ate it all). My wife's pork tenderloin was done medium as she requested; the accompanying grits were creamy and delicious.. It was a generous amount of pork; I had the leftovers the next day for lunch. The creme brulee was among the best in town."

  • "For both my wife and myself, this is one of our top 5 restaurants in Chattanooga. Always a pleasure to go. If it is your first time, you must get the pimento cheese and fried pickle appetizer."

  • "I went to Public House hoping for just the right environment for a romantic birthday dinner. Public House delivered! The service was good, our waitress knowledgeable and friendly, and the food was great! Public House also excelled in its intangibles. The room, lighting, decorations, and location were all just right. We were treated to an elegant and relaxing atmosphere for our dinner."

  • "This restaurant met all our requirements for a satisfying dining experience! The beef carpaccio was an excellent choice to start our meal, along with a good bottle of Cabernet. My dining partner loved the pot roast cooked in a deep, rich, thick broth...yum. My trout was a perfect sauté, and the accompanying butternut squash was a good compliment. Banana pudding dessert with a twist provided smooth, sweet end to great meal. Our server was friendly, attentive, and his menu suggestion were right on target with our preferences. Thanks Public House!"
