ProvisionsSuch a lovely experienceI was beyond amazed with the service the food the ambience. I sat at the Chet's bar with an open view to the kitchen. Everyone was super friendly and the food was fantastic. I'm a pescatarian and I haven't eaten meat in over 7 years but the chef was so kind and professional and proud that when he offered me a complimentary dish of their speciality ham, I had to try it!! We noticed that many diners were ordering pizzas and wondered how they could be any better than what we had. That's a tall order since Houston now has many, many good restaurants to choose from these days. But Provisions wins hands-down on food, especially since reservations are so easy and it's so close to my home. But it's impossible to resist the flavors. This is the only restaurant where I would consider eating two pizzas for lunch. The shrimp salad dances on your tongue, and the burrata makes me hope Provisions becomes a Houston institution, not a passing trend. The succint menu has several gems and what makes the place unique is the combination of flavors pairing food elements with side dishes. The ham of the day was exquisite and the dehydrated mustard enhanced its flavors. The pate de campagne was delicious, highlighted by the fresh bread, baked in house. Slices of hamachi were served mixed with a delightful vegetable mix. The sweetbread was undercooked and covered with breading which wwas largely unnecessary. The eclectic wine list covers all major varietals and wine producing areas of the world. The place's major drawback continues to be the high noise level. Server was kind, enthusiastic about the food, and attentive - she told me at the end of the meal when we were discussing the food that she was very proud to work there. That's what I love to hear. The food was outstanding--I had the pretzel epi, ham 'o' the day, lettuce salad, mussels, and the yuzu sherbert dessert. Everything was worth writing home about, as they say - the dessert deserves special mention for nearly knocking me out of my seat. The cocktail I had was also really delicious - I ended up in the bar while they got my table ready, and even though the bar was packed they still made sure I had a place to sit and someone taking my drink order. My friend was late to meet me due to traffic and the waitress was very accommodating to me, seating me and serving me a delicious cocktail (the improved Moscow mule). I also had the rosemary bread pairing which was delicious. The roasted artichoke and the cresta di gallo pasta were superb. The kale pizza was good but strong flavors so not my favorite of the evening. Carrot cake donut for dessert was fabulous. I believe the only complaint I have, and my date shares it with me, was that the vanilla tapenade was just too salty. I focused on it only because a friend who came in with a food critic months ago had mentioned it in particular as one of his must try items. Maybe not enough vanilla? I would recommend this place to anybody for special occasions or just looking for a new place to have a nice meal. They have an extensive wine list that everyone can find something in their price range. The menu allows for conservative foodies as well as those who are looking more adventurous. Two glasses of good quality Chianti Classico. Only downside was the cold draught on the right front of house seating.
