Diner Reviews
  • "Almost overly attentive staff are very eager to ensure your every need is taken care of at this sophisticated, and gastronomique temple. Table d'hôte menu choices make it difficult to test run the kitchen on a budget, so go hungry and willing to pay a full price. Delicious and detailed food awaits. And there's no doubt you'll see it - the lighting is the only real spoiler. It's so bright you feel like the show is over and they'll be putting up the chairs for the night at any moment. Subtle, more ambient lighting would make the experience feel more special and discreet - which is what it appears is the overall intention. Don't let that put you off though. It's a treat for fine dining and special occasions."

  • "It is such a pleasure to have a seafood-centric menu that has an appropriately seafood friendly wine list. The Australian truffles were a nice treat and all the starter courses were delightful. Look forward to something new every visit and was not disappointed."

  • "Only in Los Angeles would this be one of the top restaurants. The food is solid, but very little of it is memorable other than the salt cooked Santa Barbara Spot prawns. Service excellent. Bathroom cleanliness on this particular night was passable --- not what I expect when paying a few hundred bucks a person for dinner. While this is one of the best restaurants in Los Angeles, don't get your hopes up if you come from NY, CHI or SF. This is not Le Bernardin or Alinea standards. It is, however, one of the few sophisticated dining experiences in LA."

  • "Expensive restaurant which would be ok if the food was great. Unfortunately, the food here was not. Had the market tasting menu. Started off well with delightful amuse-bouches. Meal went downhill with the first course. Rubbery, tasteless sashimi. Followed by a too salty umi egg. Courses were uninspired and poor tasting until we got the halibut which was delicious. That turned out to be the exception to the rule as everything else disappointed. Not worth the price."

  • "Spectacular food and service. I was a little concerned that we would end up hating a dish and feel embarrassed but we loved everything."

  • "Fantastic meal at Providence! Great service, very accommodating to our needs, and of course, the meal was magnificient. Having been to Guy Savoy in Paris, this was worthy of the 2 star Michelin Rating. Thank you for a great meal!"

  • "Overall - my experience at Providence was good. The service was impeccable throughout dinner. Ambience was very good and the space was beautiful. The food was mostly excellent with beautifully crafted plates. There were two noticeable items I didn't like. I think their regular bread and focaccia had a very soft texture throughout - with a soft crust. I like my breads with a little more body and my crusts crunchy. The bacon brioche was very good. The risotto was very salty for which the staff apologized and discounted the meal by 30 dollars. Bottom line - impeccable service with very good food which could be better considering their price range."

  • "Continual jolts of surprising satisfying colors, flavors and ingredient combinations...what fun! The wine pairings intellectual and subdued, never upstaging but always enhancing each course."

  • "Menu was quite a challenge to decipher and we were not entirely sure what we ordered. Food was all delicious"

  • "A two star Michelin should -1: have my reservation on file. Went through hassle trying to get another and it was for a special birthday. Eventually turned out they had two reservations for us. 2: Not seat us at a table with a wet tablecloth. ( I would imagine that a Michelin evaluation would have cost it a star that night). The food, however, is a very special treat."

  • "Even though known as a fish/seafood restaurant, Providence is one of the absolute best spots in Southern California to have inventive, incredibly tasty vegetarian food (they even have a separate vegetarian printed menu that has no fish or seafood or meat). It is, of course, an expensive restaurant and, thus, perhaps more of a special occasion spot. But, no need to shy away from Providence just because you're a vegetarian. And, a vegetarian will not feel short changed at all. It seems to me that as much care and attention to detail goes into the vegetarian menu and food as with the fish and seafood menu and food."

  • "Fantastic food, excellent service, and perfect ambiance. Providence LA is THE place to go if you're a foodie with a discerning palate, and are up for a superb culinary journey."

  • "I suppose that to earn two Michelin Guide stars, a restaurant must charge absurd prices and serve ridiculously scant portions of largely unrecognizable food -- but served is a dizzying array of different "dishes", over many courses. By those metrics, Providence is hitting on all eight cylinders. The scallop taco, perhaps 2 inches wide and one inch tall, but presented in a block of stone a foot long and half a foot wide, with a narrow groove cut in the top to nestle the morsel, is a perfect case in point. Everything was tasty, but nothing was memorable or life altering, except the price."

  • "Inside joke for the night; title of review. The definition of fortified was given to us by the Som.; basically liquor added to the wine at a certain point of fermentation. This was basically how potent our enjoyment was of the dinner. Each dish outdid the last. I love how they don't compromise quality ingredients for molecular flare. Other places are so esoteric and intellectual about the foam and technique that you don't even know what you're eating anymore. I also love how visually pretty the dishes are. I took some pictures of the food just for the color combinations. The desert for example had lavender macaroons with beige basil thyme Madelines and a pear colored jelly on acacia wood, gave me ideas for decorating spare room."

  • "Excellent food, service, and wonderful attention to every detail from the beginning to the end. The four course option was perfect for us. We truly enjoyed our anniversary celebration this evening."

  • "Best of the best! The food is well prepared and laid out in a very artistic way. Total desires 3 M stars!!! Muffin to take home is a touching gestures for all the customers."

  • "This resturant offers several options to sample their fare. A four course selection, 9 course selection, and crazy as it seems even a 17 course marathon! You can also supplement course to add to the 4 and the 9 courses. Wine pairings are available as well. When we were seated, the options should have been outlined. This is my only suggestion. This because if you dont know and have not been before you would not know that wine pairings are an option on the menu. A wine list and coctail list was given first. The food is GREAT! The price is what would be expected for places of this quality: Mastro's, Belvedre, etc..."

  • "I have decided that a dining experience every season is a must. The thought, creativity and the precision in crafting the most beautiful culinary presentations is such a wonderful experience I never get tired of! I have dined here at least 5 different times over the years and it's always such an adventure! The service is excellent! The staff is so attentive and gracious! Providence is truly my favorite restaurant in LA!"

  • "Best restaurant in LA. Fabulous food; interesting but not show-off--and impeccable quality. Gracious (non-obtrusive) service, and you can actual;y hear your dinner partner talk!"

  • "The food and service are amazing as always! The tasting menus are perfect. I have never eaten a single bite here that wasn't delicious. Hands down the best restaurant in L.A."

  • "We had the four course tasting menu. I loved all the food. The service was great. I think the dining room could be a little updated."

  • "The entire dining experience was amazing! It began with the Classy cocktails and amuse bouche of ginger jello shots, and a couple more delicious starters. The first course was sashimi of fluke, then the seared scallops in tapioca and mint sauce, the main was perfectly prepared duck breast, and ended with tasty chocolate mouse dessert. There were also little surprises in between courses. Everything was exquisitely prepared, presented, and served. It's an experience to be remembered for a long time!"

  • "My husband wanted to go to Providence for his birthday this year as he has been a big fan of Micheal's for a long time. We decided on the "mini" tasting menu w/wine pairing - be prepared, this is not for the faint of heart. The mini tasting is about 9 courses, not so mini. The pace of the meal was a bit brisk at the beginning, but evened out as the meal went on. The food was amazing tho I can't even begin to remember what i had. Flavors and textures were mixed perfectly; the wine pairing was spot on. Ambiance too dark, almost claustrophobic, but I would take that over any loud, open cooking, trendy type places any day. The service was impeccable. The price, well, if you have to ask . . . . . .better start saving now, I'm glad I did."

  • "My boyfriend and I have been waiting for a special occasion to come here. We decided to come for our 3 year anniversary. They made us personalized menus for our Anniversary. The dine room setting wasn't a wow factor, it was so cold and plain. However, the restaurant is now undergoing renovations. I hated how the tables were so close to each other. The food, everything was great. I love the amouse bouche. Service was amazing and on point. I think we will come back to see the renovations."

  • "Everything was amazing. The only thing we regretted was having to get to a show and not having enough time to do the Chef's Menu! We look forward to our next visit."

  • "Having been greatly disappointed by another LA 2-star dining outpost, we came for a celebratory dinner with minimal expectations albeit hopeful based on our enjoyment of "Connie and Ted's" and the encouragement of one of "Trois Mec's" sous chefs (a "Providence" alum). In the event, our "Providence Chef's Table" Menu with Wine Pairing proved superb. The seasonal offerings were highly creative, intensely flavorful, and elegantly presented. The paired wines were spot on, and generously poured. Kudos to Cimarusti and his Kitchen Team for a memorable dinner, the likes of which we have only previously experienced in famous 3-star tables here and abroad. "

  • "Heard a lot about this restaurant and decide to visit it together with my parents. Our first trip to LA and restaurant was located at a nice neighbourhood. Ambiance was very good. We had the chef menu + wine pairing - consisting of 16 tasting dishes. All the food was outstanding and the wine goes very well with it. Our favourite was the Wangyu beef and it is the best we have ever tried. Highly recommended for special occasions and please reserve at least 4 hours if you are going for the chef menu. Special mention also goes to the waiters whose service was also outstanding. As our reservation was delayed for about 15 minutes, they make it up to us by giving us hand-made chocolates =) Overall, SUPERB and a must go if you are visiting LA."

  • "Not their fault. We thought they had a regular menu and a tasting menu. They only have have a tasting set menu. Just not for us. "

  • "We were put in the back room, which has no ambience, and is rather like an Airport Executive Lounge. The Chef Menu options gave us only 4, 9 or 16-course choices. We chose the 4 course. Some of the food was delicious, including the in-between delicacies, but my Salmon main course was very average. There was only one dessert choice in the set menu, and this was very rich. I didn't have the feeling at all that we had been at the No.1 restaurant in LA"

  • "Imaginative food at extremely high prices. Keep in mind that the portions are smaller than you might expect, and the unusual ingredients may not appeal to everyone. Ordering anything but the more expensive fixed price menus (i.e. $140 per person and up) might leave a strong appetite unsatisfied. We found the decor a bit tacky but the service was very good. The wine list is spectacular, and there are a number of excellent choices for less than $50. "
