Diner Reviews
  • "Pros: Excellent food. I split the Surf & Turf w/my mom (she had the Turf), and I had the Surf. The lobster was excellent. All around, everyone at our table enjoyed their food. Cons: It took 15 to get menus from the Maitre D', and another 15+ minutes for our server to get to our table. It wasn't very busy when we got there so I doubt that she was swamped with other customers. Also we had to ask several times to get water for my son, and she didn't have the kitchen divide our meal, even though she knew we were splitting it. Overall it was a great meal, but because of the poor service from not only our server but the Maitre D', we probably won't be coming back or recommending it to anyone."

  • "It seems like many of the nicer places around KC are closed on Monday night. Being a hotel restaurant means Providence is open on Monday night -- which works out nicely for those of us wanting a great dining experience at the beginning of the week. We had excellent service and enjoyed the sophisticated rustic feel to the room. Cocktails and food were all interesting without being too clever and highly enjoyable. Definitely plan to come back."

  • "We've been looking for a new spot for dinner before shows at the Music Hall, and we found a great one! Complimentary valet parking, walking distance to the theater, wonderful service and marvelous food. We'll be back!"

  • "Great food, great service, lively ambiance on a saturday night"

  • "The location is convenient for various events downtown. Will return, but will not have another filet. Will try something else."

  • "While we enjoyed the food, here, it isn't some place I would go out of my way to visit again. The food was tasty, but nothing made us go "wow". The s'more dessert that we were excited to try, though interesting with the lava cake component, paled in comparison to Renee Kelly's. The restaurant, itself, was fairly empty on a Saturday night with 2 huge events downtown, which was kind of surprising. The ambience was eclectic, but not off-putting. The staff was very nice. Oh... and parking was a nightmare because of the events, and valet was for hotel guests only. Fortunately, the valet let me park out front."

  • "I very much wanted to love this place... But it fell short of expectations. The service was mediocre, and the best part of dinner was dessert. It was a delicious s'mores inspired concoction that ended the experience on a good note, at least. Not terrible, but not great. There are plenty of Kansas City restaurants downtown that I'd rather dine at."

  • "We had a pre-opera dinner, and had some of the house specialties, which were excellent Our vegetarian in the group was well accommodated. We ordered European style--one course at a time, yet got out ij time for a 7:30pm performance. Soups were subtle, salads with freshest of greens, and the entrees--fro tamale to chicked--delicate and tasty. all presented well. A very nice wine list."

  • "Last minute dinner reservation to entertain clients. Restaurant was in a great location allowingour group to walk around the power and light district afterwards. It was a great change of pace after a week of Kansas City Barbaque. Not being a seafood lover, I was concerned that the menu would be limiting, boy was I suprised and delighted. Great menu and all guests had a fabulous meal and apps."

  • "We absolutely love The Providence before a nightly performance at the Kaufmann or elsewhere in the entertainment district. The menu is varied, the food is nicely prepared and presented, the drinks are wine are wonderful and affordable, and the service and staff are so friendly and caring. A really lovely evening experience."

  • "Dinner for four was delicious, service was fantastic, and it was altogether a delightful evening. The menu is inventive and interesting, with high-end versions of typical British gastropub food. Especially noteworthy was the sticky toffee pudding: unlike any I have had all over the UK and Ireland but delicious."

  • "From beginning to end of planning my party, the staff were professional, friendly, and very knowledgeable about all my questions. They communicated effectively, efficiently and timely with me on menu selections, questions, etc. It was like planning a family get together without the fuss!"

  • "Meat and cheese board - YUCK! Salmon was excellent. Tuna salad was very good. Carrot cake was awful. This menu is not nearly as good as the menu was for the restaurant previously in this location which I believe was also called the Drum Room. This is the second time we have eaten here. We will not be back. There are too many other locations downtown that have good food in all categories. it is unfortunate as we love the ambiance of the President Hotel."

  • "Came in for V-day dinner, they did not have lobster for Surf and Turf which is what both of us wanted. Got a Filet requested at Medium-Well, came out burnt and dry with almost no flavor. Food also came very fast and we were in and out in a hour. Also the sides were very small and not very flavorful. We ended up going somewhere else afterward for drinks and had to order some more food because we were still hungry. Overall price was too much for the quality and the amount of food served."

  • "We booked dinner at Providence on a Saturday evening prior to a show at Quality Hill Playhouse. I had been there once for lunch a few weeks earlier, thought the food was good and wanted to try dinner. In terms of the positives, our server Rita was very good and was able to strike the difficult balance between attentiveness and hovering. The food was subpar and a poor value. My wife's shrimp tempura was salty and otherwise bland - 3 shrimp and homemade potato chips for $19. My filet was prepared well but was very small, maybe 5 oz. There were a few green beans on top of very average garlic mashed potatoes - hard to understand $27. I was hoping Providence would be a viable downtown option but it came up short. We won't return.l"

  • "We dined at Providence for our Valentine's Day meal and will never return. The overall atmosphere was average, our table was very wide so we felt as if we had to yell to hear each other. In addition, the restaurant was very quiet and very bright so you could hear every word spoken around you. Music would have been an easy solution. From there, our waiter was awkward and did not make us feel welcome. Our food was overly priced and below average. We had the filets and were very disappointed to find tiny servings that left us hungry. All around, the food was NOT worth it's price tag."

  • "Went to Providence before an event this week. Restaurant was very quiet. Shared 3 starters, a salad, and dessert. The pork belly and the bison carpaccio were good - the salad and the smoked salmon were just okay. Enjoyed the sticky toffee pudding. Waiter seemed put upon and did not check on us - instead, had to flag him down when we wanted to order more food or another glass of wine. The dining room was practically empty, so service should have been more accomodating."

  • "Our food was excellent, the service was very attentive without hovering, but there was only one other person in the restaurant in a three hour period...perhaps due to sleeting outside. It was my first time there but I will definitely return, for both lunch and evening."

  • "Delicious, beautifully plated, modern take on comfort food in this elegant, historic hotel. Our waiter flawlessly guided us,recommending an amazing tomato bisque, a perfectly done meatloaf of lamb, pork, and beef, scallops, to lobster with butter knife tender filets. Home baked breads including a ciabatta and a raisin loaf. Our server led us well with perfect wines for our entrees. Though portions were not huge, the flavors were so distinct and enjoyable that the ability to savor all the flavors was a joy. Groaning, we did not skip the gorgeously presented desserts including must try unique versions of s'more molten cake and a most unusual, incredible carrot cake. Service was impeccable, gracious without being overbearing."

  • "Food scrumptious....everyone in the party concurred. Steak and salmon done to perfection...presentation of plates excellent....bread was absolutely delicious! The tomato bisque soup...was yummy!"

  • "The appetizer was really good, The Soup was excellent, the entree was average, the coffee was cold. The waitress should have checked it before bringing it to the table. Then w had to wait for a fresh pot before getting a hot cup. My husband's drink was not what he ordered and some lame excuse was given for that faux pas. Overall, we probably will not return. There are too many good restaurants in KC."

  • "Enjoyable! Blue Note salad could use a bit more pear for balance. Salmon was done to perfection and the winter grain risotto was creamy but toothsome--the only quibble is that the portions were diminutive. The Sticky Toffee dessert is perhaps misnamed but superb. The date cake was flavorful and candied orange peel served as the perfect counterpoint. Sixth Glass ice cream was a bit too subtle by comparison. Service was quick and attentive. The complimentary valet parking was especially appreciated as there was an event at the Sprint Center and lots were crowded. Recommended."

  • "I really wanted to love this place. But I did not. We were a party of 6 during restaurant week. The service was awful. Our waiter seemed like he didn't know what he was doing and lacked all basic skills of any server. With the price of the food, someone that inattentive and nonchalant is unacceptable. It took forever to even get our drinks. We ordered an appetizer, but our food came out before that because our waiter forgot. The portions were TINY. Smallest piece of salmon I've ever had. Way smaller than what I had at Bristol the night before for the same price. Salmon and short ribs were blah, but people that had steaks enjoyed them. Pros: Loved the restaurant being inside the hotel. Liked the ambiance. Will not come back."

  • "This was our second visit to Providence and somehow they just seem to miss. It was Restaurant Week and maybe they did not have enough staff for the crowd, but I would not call this a crowd. I don't believe the new renovation of the restaurant fits with the hotel style. The bar area seems nice and would come there for a drink. My husbands meal was overcooked, very dry. Soup was good but the rest of the food was not memorable. My husband ordered a glass of red wine to go with his dinner and they brought it out long after our food was served. I wanted coffee with my dessert but was never ask if I wanted tea or coffee. I always want downtown restaurants to do well but there are so many better options. I hope it works at some point."

  • "The food was wonderful. Their salmon appetizer was especially delicious. I had their filet and it was cooked perfectly and very tasty. Our waiter was just OK. One of our party ordered a specific scotch and when he brought it and said the brand. When my daughter corrected him and told him it was the wrong brand, he shoved the receipt at her and said, "This is what I put in. I don't know anything about scotch.". Then at the end of our meal we ordered coffee with dessert. We were wondering why our coffee didn't come out with the dessert and he said they were having a hard time finding coffee cups."

  • "Great place but not impressed with our server being put on the the floor with little to no experience with this price level of menu and just the basics for handling customers."

  • "My lobster bisque was the best part of this entire experience. My partner started with the Blue Note Salad consisting of good quality lettuce and reasonable blue cheese. The blueberries tasted like they had been frozen and were pretty flavorless. We tried the pork and the meatloaf. The pork was flavorless. The meatloaf was equivalent to the best Banquet Salisbury steak I have had. The dessert round was a bit better for me; the sticky toffee was good, but my friend's pear cobbler was a disappointment. The service was terrible. The only person that gave us any attention was the man that brought our plates from the kitchen (not our server). Whether this is standard for Providence I don't know and frankly i will never find out."

  • "Great food and wonderful ambience. The entire staff from maitre d' to server were fantastic and solicitous to our every needs. This was a Sunday evening meal that we had originally scheduled for previous days bur had to curtail because of the weather. Well worth the wait. The only thing that would have made it better would have been to reserve a room at the Hotel President, of which the restaurant is a part, and make a full romantic night of the experience."

  • "We dined here on New Years Eve and ordered their NYE 3-course meal, which was PHENOMENAL! The desserts were some of the best I've ever tasted. Would definitely visit Providence again!"

  • "Set in a hotel which opened in the late 19th century this restaurant bills itself as a "New American restaurant." From what I could tell that essentially means giving standard menu items fancy names and accompanying them with exotic sides. In other words, this place goes beyond the standard steak and potatoes fare. All items were tasty and this is likely to be one of the best spots in downtown KC. We visited on a very busy night so service was a bit slow and the waiter obviously impatient. Perhaps on a slower evening we might have been show more courtesy. I'd return for the tasteful wood ambiance of this downstairs restaurant."
