A word from Provence - Carrboro
Provence has seen only few changes over the last 10 years. And since the change of ownership in 2012 by Chef Baptist Knaven you’ll still find all of your classic favorites such as the beautiful Sole Meunière and Whole Fish baked in Rock Salt, as well as the Onion Soup and Lobster Bisque on the menu.
Chef Baptist came to the United States about 10 years ago and has earned his accolades in the U.S. at his very successful Mediterranean restaurant “Café Zito” on the North Carolina coast, until he moved to the Triangle and started working at Provence. Working with Felix Roux, a Provence, France native, gave him the edge in classic French cuisine and that is what his menu is based on.
Enjoy a casual dining atmosphere, inside or out-, with an impressive French and international wine selection. Enjoy our great seasonal salads and entrées, and choose from our all in-house made desserts like Pain Perdu and Chocolate Fondant.
Bon Appétit!

Diner Reviews
  • "This was the first time we went to Provence having recently moved to Chapel Hill from NYC. The dinner was delicious, the service was right on without being over bearing. The "house" that Provence is in was charming. We have been trying restaurants in the area and this was by far the best. Definitely on our "let's go back" list."

  • "One of the few French restaurants in the area, Provence is a landmark in the dining scene for the town nicknamed "Paris on the Piedmont". It is a rare white-tablecloth type of atmosphere (although the patio is less formal), and a nice opportunity to enjoy a romantic dress-up night out. Although parking is very convenient, it is a gravel lot so high heels are not really practical. The restaurant itself is small and intimate, occupying a former house. Nice wine selection."

  • "We got the fish sampler, muscles, salad and risotto. For 2 of us sharing everything it was too much food! Very tasty, but could use more garlic. I threw my no dairy policy out the window - impossible at the place with butter and cheese in most of the dishes. It was worth it! They do not do gluten free options."

  • "This restaurant is as good as it gets in my view. EVERYTHING about it is special. It is my restaurant of choice in this area when I wanted a evening of fine dining with excellent service and ambience."

  • "We had lunch here the other day and ordered the hamburgers, medium well. (Yes, I know, it's not French, but . . . one of us is gluten-free and they don't have much GF choice in their entrees) They came out raw in the middle. They tasted fine but were a bit on the greasy side, as were the fries. Stick to the croques (if you're not GF)."

  • "Escargot was much to heaviy garliced. The worst ever in my experience. Several of the mussels were empty. We like this restaurant a lot but this was the worst meal I have had there. Others in the party were pleased with their food."

  • "We went to Provence for my husband's birthday per recommendation of a friend. The wine list had some interesting options. Our salads were quite nice. The room is not what I'd expect for a French restaurant. It reminded me more of a Southern kitchen, but still it was clean, light, and airy. Our entrees were fine. All in all, we had a pretty good meal."

  • "It was a quiet, cool night perfect for outside dining - service was very good - three of the four dinners were excellent, one dinner (which was the special) was not special…….overall experience was excellent though!!! Enjoyed the evening!"

  • "Excellent service, had the pork chop and my wife had lamb chops, both were well presented and were very good."

  • "I always tend to order fish because, in the past, they offered the widest array of choice with often up to 5 different kinds, all fresh. But, they were out of the whole fish special, and no more sole almondine, for a while. Got the 4 sampler; less than impressed. Should have gotten the duck breast or the filet! Escargot with roquefort was outstanding though; as was the wine, until we ordered a second bottle of the white burgundy to learn they were out of that , too. Provence salad with dijon vinaigrette was awesome, too."

  • "In the Chapel Hill one asks: "what's the best place to go if you don't choose the Inn at Fearrington?" Provence in Carboro was on everyone's short list of 4-5 recommended alternatives. It is a pleasant small restaurant, friendly, with good food and, if the weather cooperates, an outdoor eating option. The menu is, as you'd expect, mostly French and the wine list is in the same category. The cooking is certainly above average, but not much that is memorable. The chef knows what he's doing, but one wishes for the extra something that would make the dishes memorable. Example: Tournedos done perfectly, but the sauce and the rest of the plate was only average. Vichyssoise good, but thin. I'd go back, but hope the chef keeps experimenting."

  • "Our family of 6 adults enjoyed a delicious, beautiful brunch at Provence on Father's Day. Our server was skilled, knowledgeable, attentive, fun, and did a great job in joining in the banter of our group. We were seated on the porch. Loved the location but the table was a bit small for 6 adults. Other than that, our experience was perfect!"

  • "We have been dining at Provence for many years and it has always been very special. It is our "go to" place when we have guests visiting from out of town or when we just want a delicious meal. The manager greeted and seated us at our table in the bar area, which I requested when making the reservation. It is quiet, cozy and beautiful with murals on all walls. We all ordered drinks, which were well prepared. The bread was wonderful as were our escargot baked in roquefort. The lobsters were delicious as were the rack of lamb and tournedos of beef. Grand Marnier creme brulee, tarte tartin and ice cream du jour were a great way to end the meal. Wines recommended were also very good and complemented our dinners perfectly."

  • "We went for my birthday and were pleased with the experience. The food is authentically French and, therefore, delightfully delicious. The mussels were fresh; the onion soup yummy; the whole fish, deboned by our table was a standout; and the creme brulee was the usual superb finish."

  • "My first time at Provence, wow, it was excellent!. I was so surprised to find this gem of a restaurant has been here for over 10 years. It is a wonderful dining experience, from the service to the food preparation and wonderful flavors. Brings me back to the great restaurants of Paris. The outdoor patio is a great environment with energy and relaxing at the same time. The drinks are well prepared and generous and the wine pairings are excellent recommendations. This is one of my favorites in all the Triangle. bon appetite !"

  • "Provence is a little cozy French restaurant with a nice décor and relaxed atmosphere. While it is a gem aesthetically, I am sorry to say we were sorely disappointed with the food and service. The French Onion Soup has no broth because it has way too many onions and too much cheese (we love the cheese, but too much is too much). A third of the pork chop I ordered "Medium" was actually raw and had to be sent back. Even re-cooked, it was still raw in some places (pork is not supposed to be eaten raw!). My husband's Filet Mignon was also undercooked. We saw our waitress ask other patrons if they would like some fresh ground pepper, but she did not offer us any, and never refilled our water and soft drink either. We will not be back."

  • "Just because a restaurant has tables outside doesn't mean I want to eat outside! This is NOT the case at Provence. The outside dining area is as beautiful as the inside. We love going early in the evening and sharing a bottle of wine and, in this case, two beautiful salads. One was the goat cheese and beet salad and the other was spinach/mint with pears and spiced pecans. Next we ordered two of the scallop on fried green tomato appetizers which are perfect for a small meal. It would be easy to follow this with a lovely cheese platter but we were full! The service is, as always, excellent."

  • "... and not sure why. Met a friend for lunch and we were each super happy with our lunches (one = salmon over rice, the other sauteed scallops served on fried green tomatoes from the local farmer's market) preceded by a bowl of tomato soup with dill we split. Service was excellent and the crowd sparse; we were there near the end of serving time for lunch and it's summer in a college town (best time to go out to eat). Will be back a lot sooner ... "

  • "The young waiter bordered on rambunctious and assured us he would take care of us. Didn't write down the order. Came back to clarify the white wine choice. Promised bread. Twice. Didn't happen. Soup brought but no spoons. Found Manager, got spoons. Forgot to bring the glass of red wine until I was half-way through the entrée. We asked for dessert menus, he brought the bill. Kid-unprofessional wait service in college town. Food was ample and decent. "

  • "The duck was tasty and presented nicely . Mussels given in appetizer portion was plentiful. Onion soup was awesome and very tasty. Resotto dish with two lobster tails was tasty over the sepia. "

  • "What a pleasant surprise it was to dine at Provence on Mother's Day. I typically don't enjoy "holiday" dining -- special menus, crowded spaces, etc., but Provence pulled it off without a hitch! Lovely on all counts -- food, service, ambience. I think I have found a new favorite restaurant. Bravo!"

  • "Our Mother's Day brunch was completely overshadowed by the poor treatment we received from the manager at the end of our meal. After waiting on the kitchen for our food between every course, the manager asked us to move to bar to finish our desserts because the restaurant was busy and they needed our table for another reservation. This restaurant was clearly overwhelmed by the Mother's Day and graduation weekend crowd, and the service we received suffered significantly as a result. The manager could have handled the entire situation differently and still made us feel like our business was appreciated and valued, but he instead chose to be dismissive, rude, and picked up our plates before we even knew what was happening. Bon débarras."
