A word from Provence - Carrboro
Provence has seen only few changes over the last 10 years. And since the change of ownership in 2012 by Chef Baptist Knaven you’ll still find all of your classic favorites such as the beautiful Sole Meunière and Whole Fish baked in Rock Salt, as well as the Onion Soup and Lobster Bisque on the menu.
Chef Baptist came to the United States about 10 years ago and has earned his accolades in the U.S. at his very successful Mediterranean restaurant “Café Zito” on the North Carolina coast, until he moved to the Triangle and started working at Provence. Working with Felix Roux, a Provence, France native, gave him the edge in classic French cuisine and that is what his menu is based on.
Enjoy a casual dining atmosphere, inside or out-, with an impressive French and international wine selection. Enjoy our great seasonal salads and entrées, and choose from our all in-house made desserts like Pain Perdu and Chocolate Fondant.
Bon Appétit!

Diner Reviews
  • "The food was delicious, but some of the food and coffee was not very hot. It is always a treat to go here, I know a holiday is a hard time for restaurants. "

  • "My daughter and I love Sunday brunch at Provence on warm days. Outdoor seating is highly recommended and I suggest requesting this on your reservation as those tables are popular. The food is lovely and the outdoor seating is adorable. There are numerous tables on a lovely gravel patio as well as a few on the front porch. The tables on the porch are very cozy though they are a bit small and might feel uncomfortable to a larger individual. "

  • "The restaurant is in an old house on Weaver Street. It is decorated nicely, the tables are not too close, and it has a lot of charm. The escargot in butter and herbs (not the cheese one) and the raddichio and beet salad were delicious. The fish of the night was cooked well, but over-seasoned (way too salty) and there were not many vegetables on the plate. The filet mignon was decent, and we were too full for dessert but they looked delicious. The waitstaff was attentive and helpful. We would definitely return if we were staying in the area."

  • "Provence does a wonderful job on their lamb, and I always look forward to a great meal there. They began our meal with a delicious mushroom soup sample, and I would recommend it highly. The service could not have been better and we throughly enjoyed out time there."

  • "They were out of their featured dish and ice cream for all desserts We had a 7pm reservation Wait staff inattentive and very slow"

  • "Food was very good. After serving us, our server forgot about us. We were unable to get his attention. Finally another server noticed we had been sitting forever with empty plates and crossed utensils and asked if she could clear our table, and we said yes, thanks, and please get our check from our server. Our server came and apologized for forgetting the second glass of wine I had asked for and said he had two new tables as an explanation. The owner was flitting around the whole time and did not notice our situation and did not respond or notice when I tried to flag him down. It's unfortunate that such a small restaurant with so few tables can lose track of a table like that. This used to be my favorite restaurant for a special occasion."

  • "This was our first Sunday brunch visit and enjoyed it very much. The restaurant owner promptly seated us and our waitress Allison gave us attentive care. My Potato-Leek soup was marvelous and I opted for the Rattatoille Omelet while my wife enjoyed a delightful Shrimp salad. We always enjoy food prepared with the French technique. The bar served generous glasses of wine and champagne. Somehow our reservation through OpenTable wasn't recognized and we had to call the restaurant to obtain our Dining credit the next day."

  • "So glad that Provence is now open for lunch. We had delicious salads. Great place."

  • "Comfortably charming with that little something that sets it apart. White tablecloths and a posy of flowers on each table are part of the charm. Particularly enjoyed the scallop appetizer. The salad was fresh and delicious and lightly dressed to perfection - so very, very good! Bread basket was tasty and fresh from the oven. The chocolate orange dessert is more chocolate than orange and good if you favor chocolate desserts; the almond crust is delicious. Today we ate lunch. I look forward to dinner very soon."

  • "Disappointed after being a patron for many years. Salad had greens that were so tough they were un chewable. Both of us left more than half. Lobster was nearly impossible to get out of shell made a mess of clothes trying to do so. Service just so so."

  • "Quiet atmosphere. Small restaurant with an intimate feel. The manager, Pierre, clearly takes pride in the ambience. He greeted our party and showed us our table and offered to take our coats. The waiter was very patient with us as we waited for the rest of our party to show up. The waiter made very good and descriptive recommendations. Contrary to other reviews, the staff was NOT inexperienced college students. They were all very cordial and professional. The food was wonderfully prepared. We ordered the fish baked in rock salt. The waiter brought it table-side and delicately cleaned off all the salt and separated the fish from the bones. Pierre makes excellent suggestions for wine pairings with dessert!"

  • "The owner is very active in the business and seems to take pride in making this place something special. Pricey but good quality. Service is perfect. Very nice to have a vegetarian option. The Fish is very high quality and perfectly prepared. Nice for a special occasion."

  • "Pleased to discover Provence is now open for lunch and has a reasonably priced lunch menu. I am a huge fan of crepes, so that is what made me decide to give it a try. The setting is lovely. A small cottage with two cozy dining rooms. White tablecloths, nice windows, bright. The crepe entrée allows you to pick from a variety of fillings (make sure to ask the cost of each filling). I had spinach, brie and pear, which was absolutely delicious. Also had red pepper soup, which was excellent as well. The only thing that was not as tasty as I had hoped was the apple tart for dessert. Found it to be a little dry and wished it was served warm and that the crust was a little more flaky rather than so dense. Can't wait to go back for more crepes."

  • "We enjoy Provence for its creative and delicious food dishes certainly, but also for its pleasant staff and location. We have introduced and reintroduced many friends to the restaurant, and they have returned to it to enjoy just as we continue to do so."

  • "Enjoyed. A lovely birthday brunch with my daughter on Saturday. We were treated quite well and our food was well prepared. Regrettably, there was a bridal lunchroom in the adjoining room and our service was spotty. Management was aware of the problem and did apologize for the rather haphazard service. Having been to Provence before I know that they can do better in this area. We will return."

  • "Dining in Carrboro's "Provence" is the next best thing to being in a little village in the Vaucluse, having a delightful meal in a cozy room with just the right amount of attention from the service staff and furnished with beaucoup de charme."

  • "This is one of our favorite restaurants. We have been many times and the food, service and experience is always of the highest quality. Even the fresh bread is special. I can recommend any of the menu items - we've tried most of them. As a final point, we're having a dinner/party at Provence for 20 people on the occasion of my wife's XX birthday. Cheers."

  • "We really like Provence for special occasions such as Valentines. Never a disappointment....always superb. Delicious fare, great service, nice atmosphere and quiet. This time we enjoyed beet salad and scallops first courses, and sole and filet mignon entres, and Pain Perdu dessert. All were fabulous. Highly recommended. Only downside is limited/crowded parking."

  • "Decor looked so-so for what you pay. Didn't like how on Valentine's Day they forced us to purchase an appetizer with our dinner. (They jacked up the prices so an appetizer was included in the price of any entree.) Food and service were very good though and I would go back to eat there again for special occasions. Probably when weather is warm though. Inside decor is drab and seating is crowded. Did an excellent job cooking our fish and the fish was really fresh. So rare to get really fresh fish at a restaurant anymore."

  • "We have been here twice recently. The food is superb and the service is polished and professional. The brunch is totally decadent and 100% wonderful. This place is definitely in our rotation."

  • "Located in a small, refurbished house, the venue lacked any ambience. We had to ask to be reseated because of drafty ventilation as did another group. The wait staff were slow and sparse. Worst of all, the food was totally unremarkable. There was no bread selection, it was served room temp and without butter (really...for a French restaurant?). The menu was limited. My fiancée's flounder was edible but I've had much better at home. The coup de grace was the filet mignon. The serving size was larger than expected, cooked as requested but lacked any intrinsic flavor. The side dishes were too small for the entrée. The desserts were fine and presented very nicely but didn't leave me with a pleasant taste given the price of the meal."

  • "Good menu and wine list. A little pricy but overall good."

  • "Not only was this an excellent meal, especially the fish, but we could also hear each other without strain. Our waitress Carisse (not sure I've spelled this correctly) was perfect; she knew when to join in and when not to, had a charming sense of humor, boned the whole fish perfectly and with a flair, and she was willing to give honest opinions about the food and wine when asked. Provence is fortunate to have her on their staff and will be missing her when she gets her nursing degree. The Chef was available and I asked him about my choices and he encouraged me to pick what I was leaning towards and it was excellent. One wonders why it didn't make the N&O's list of best restaurants in the Triangle just out."

  • "Provence is one of our favorite restaurants. Sitting around on a Saturday morning and thought why not brunch. Didn't have "brunch" items but soup (tomato for me and French onion for my wife). Great way to start on a cold day. We both had mussels for main. Delicious. As always, the bread was great as was the service. Great last minute idea."

  • "I have been meaning to check this place out for awhile. Out of town guest and a birthday! The food was classic French. Nothing super innovative, or surprising, or amazing. But everything was well prepared, the service was competent and friendly without being overbearing and stuffy. Restaurant is in a former house, which gives it an informal vibe. I had the lobster bisque, the escargot with roquefort cheese and the foie gras. (yes, I know…) For some reason I always prefer the appetizers. My only criticism is that the host could smile more."

  • "Waitress was nice, but not very good. She couldnt answer questions about the wine list, but she did ask the maitre d' to assist us. We ordered mussels and escargot as apps from the prix fixe menu to be followed by duck confit and sole. We asked to be given time between courses so as not to be rushed. The mussels were amazing, the escargot was inedible - I literally spit it out. Our entrees were presented after a nice wait. However it was obvious that they spent that wait under a heat lamp. The confit was dried out, we had to ask for extra sauce. Also, I was given trout instead of sole, again all dried out. The waitress initially insisted it was sole. I had to convince her otherwise. Very disappointing. They apologized but we wont be back."

  • "Serviceable lunch but nothing to exclaim over except the relatively high price. Under done and mealy French fries accompanied an overdone burger with too much garlic seasoning. I expected an excellent apple tart and got an expensive serving of tasteless apples with a crust. I may give the place another try but not for awhile."
