A word from Provence - Carrboro
Provence has seen only few changes over the last 10 years. And since the change of ownership in 2012 by Chef Baptist Knaven you’ll still find all of your classic favorites such as the beautiful Sole Meunière and Whole Fish baked in Rock Salt, as well as the Onion Soup and Lobster Bisque on the menu.
Chef Baptist came to the United States about 10 years ago and has earned his accolades in the U.S. at his very successful Mediterranean restaurant “Café Zito” on the North Carolina coast, until he moved to the Triangle and started working at Provence. Working with Felix Roux, a Provence, France native, gave him the edge in classic French cuisine and that is what his menu is based on.
Enjoy a casual dining atmosphere, inside or out-, with an impressive French and international wine selection. Enjoy our great seasonal salads and entrées, and choose from our all in-house made desserts like Pain Perdu and Chocolate Fondant.

There are also four dining tables in the bar. I would not call it classic French food but there is a French flair and many French wines.   • "Inside is kind of formal with white table cloths... but it still felt somehow not intimate at all. The outside patio looked much nicer, but it was a too hot to sit outside. The onion soup I had was delicious. I also had lobster over risotto - the lobster was salty and a bit overcooked, but still tasted alright. I disliked the sepia risotto - it had cuttlefish in it, I think. It wasn't creamy, so the texture was strange, and I honestly found the black color (I think from the ink) to be disconcerting. There was also unexpectedly shrimp in the risotto even though it wasn't in the menu. Dessert (ice cream in puff pastry with ganache) was tasty, but difficult to eat - the ganache was very hard. Staff was very nice - no complaints about service."

  • "I have been dining at Provence since it opened (which is longer ago than the current website indicates). The food has always been excellent, but in the early days the wine selection (especially by the glass) was terrible for a French restaurant. The new management has solved that problem, and there is now a fine selection, by the glass and by the bottle. They have also wisely kept some old favorites (two preparations of escargot, the fish prepared in salt, the fish mixed grill), but added some new ones (a fine seared foie gras appetizer and a wonderful lobster risotto). And the use of local vegetables definitely showed in the salad."

  • "My husband and I had Saturday brunch at Provence. It's a sweet little "French style" restaurant, right in the middle of Carrboro, NC. The courtyard is an awesome place to people-watch and the interior is cozy and European. Our server was fantastic and the food couldn't be better. The escargots, crepes, and quiche were all delicious, and the wine list was good as well. The location is across the street (diagonally) from Weaver St. Market, so it's a nice place to eat before grocery shopping. We will return!"

  • "We decided to have Saturday Brunch/Lunch at Provence at the last minute. We were very happy that they were able to accommodate us on short notice. Under the new ownership the dining experience and the food have been getting better and better every time we visit. Now being open for Lunch and Brunch on the weekends is wonderful. The food is quintessential French or Mediterranean bistro and its great. Scallops and smoked pork belly for me, chilled wild mushroom and truffle soup for my wife - yum. Smoked Salmon Benedict and Crepe with brie, pear and spinach - fantastic. And Oh..the beignets with chocolate sauce and raspberry coulis are to die for!"

Our waitress (I think Kim) was incredibly knowledgeable about the menu and very professional. Pierre, the manager, checked on us several times during our meal.   • "One of the few French restaurants in the area, Provence is a landmark in the dining scene for the town nicknamed "Paris on the Piedmont". It is a rare white-tablecloth type of atmosphere (although the patio is less formal), and a nice opportunity to enjoy a romantic dress-up night out. Although parking is very convenient, it is a gravel lot so high heels are not really practical. The restaurant itself is small and intimate, occupying a former house. Nice wine selection."

I threw my no dairy policy out the window - impossible at the place with butter and cheese in most of the dishes. It was worth it! They do not do gluten free options."

(Yes, I know, it's not French, but . . . one of us is gluten-free and they don't have much GF choice in their entrees) They came out raw in the middle. They tasted fine but were a bit on the greasy side, as were the fries. Stick to the croques (if you're not GF)."

The room is not what I'd expect for a French restaurant. It reminded me more of a Southern kitchen, but still it was clean, light, and airy. Our entrees were fine.
