My parents came in town to visit me and I wanted to take them somewhere special. They are big wine drinkers (not in the alcoholic sense) and so I took them to a place with a 20+ page wine list. The Sommelier was so impressive, and yet did not make us feel dumb while talking about the wine. The food, ahhh the food was amazing. For the first course we shared many dishes, all of which were delicious. For our entrees we got different fish dishes, all of which were like nothing we had ever tasted before. The one issue I had was that our waiter was a little "sassy" about some of our basic requests. However, I have been to Proof many times before and the service has been impeccable. If you are in DC, you MUST eat at Proof.

I came here with my wife for our one-year anniversary while we were visiting DC, and we had a great meal. We shared the quinoa salad, the gumbo, the halibut, and the swordfish. Everything was excellent! I particularly liked the gumbo, while my wife's favorite was the halibut. Our server was very friendly and helpful, and we were glad the place did not feel pretentious, as many fine dining restaurants do. The wine list is extensive and a little pricey, but they had several reasonable by-the-glass options. Overall, we had a good experience at Proof and would return if in the area again.

It would be nice if there were someplace to go for dinner where people didn't show up in shorts and sneakers. I suppose given Proof's location it can't be that place but I can dream. I can also dream that that the chef will think a little harder about how the food he serves is produced and take foie gras off the menu. It is SUCH an inhumane product. (Yes, I know about the pig's head on the menu.) And THAT is the reason I won't be recommending Proof to any friends.

This was my second time dining at Proof and on both visits the food was simply fantastic. Soft shell crabs are in season and the chef here is taking full advantage of the seasonal favorite. The meat and cheese platters and choices are amazing and the wine list has a broad cross section of price points so that having a bottle of wine does not break the bank (or expense account). My one real criticism is that the wait staff is very nonchalant. Really they are lukewarm at best. Given the amazing food offerings at the restaurant, you would think the staff would display more enthusiasm for the food and the customers. But they really do treat you as if they are doing you the favor by waiting on your table. This needs to change.

The sweatbreads were amazing and one of my favorite dishes. The halibut was also very good. The disappointment was the coconut dacquoise. It was too sweet and the mixture of fruit compote and other flavors did not really meld well together. Proof is known for its wine list and I enjoyed the selection as promised. The noise made it hard to hear at times and I decided I wish I had braved a slight bit of heat to be outside.

Consistently excellent service - the fact that we see the same servers time and time again is an indication that the restaurant must be doing something right! Food was superb on this visit - softshells crabs and beef carpaccio were standouts. Panna cotta with blackberry sauce was an excellent summer dessert choice. Very nice wine selection.

Me and a group of friends were trying to try all of the Washingtonian's list of best restaurants in the area, and to sum up Proof for us: PROS: 1. Dessert is where Proof actually excelled. Wonderful taste AND texture of the cakes. 5 star for desserts. 2. The hostesses were VERY kind and welcoming. CONS: 1. Waitress attentive at first, but seeing we needed time to order abandoned us and we had to flag her down later. 2. Seated next to the cash register was not pleasant and despite us all being in our 20s we didn't appreciate the "hip" atmosphere of being squished next to strangers. (Could hear an ENTIRE first date conversation next to us) 3. Noise level is pretty loud but we did go on a Friday. 4. All our meals were good, but forgettable.

We are a family with 2 vegetarians, and finding a nice restaurant which has more than the typical veggie pasta dish is extremely hard. Proof had so many options on its menu it was hard to make a decision! All were beautifully executed, original, and had wonderful flavor and texture. And the carnivores in our party were very happy as well! Service was also excellent, from the valet guys (who were truly awesome), the hostess and manager, and the server who was well informed and personable but not intrusive. Very nice dinner. We are sure to return!

My husband and I really enjoyed our meal at Proof. Fish was done wonderfully and the sticky toffee dessert was out of this world. The sommelier was helpful and informative. They promote themselves as wine centric and that's no joke. They feature a large, layered, and intriguing wine list that happily has great options for both bottles and by the glass. The wine list can be pricey, but an adventure awaits if you are so inclined. The menu when we visited for dinner offered a decent selection and what we ordered was well executed. The service was professional and attentive, and featured a visit from the very helpful and approachable sommelier. Overall a very enjoyable experience, especially if you are a wino as I am.

I have been there several times and the experience has always been good. This time the waiter was very snooty and rude which made the entire experience unpleasant. I would think twice before going again. Before this week I would have offered an unqualified recommendation. Now I'm not so sure. Seemed like maybe the waiter thought he was doing us a favor by allowing us to dine there. My mom is picky about her restaurants and I was really hoping she would enjoy her birthday dinner there. Instead we spent about $500 and left feeling like it was a disappointment.

Extraordinary high-end restaurant, with nothing usual about any of the food. Wine list is extensive. Wine steward was very knowledgeable. Food was terrific and service outstanding. Prices are not for the faint of heart, however. Be prepared to pay a lot, but get a lot for the money in skillfully prepared and well-presented everything -- from beginning to dessert and after dinner drinks and wines.

Upon arrival to our table, the server, who has now come to the table three times but never greeted us had to be asked if he was our server and if he had a name? He never smiled and acted as though he was not happy to be at work let alone "take care of our group". We spent nearly $800 and gratuity of 18% was added to our table of 6. Unfortunately for him, that is all he received, and I almost always tip 20%. The efficiency of the food and the flavors were excellent. The sommelier was very knowledgeable and we enjoyed the three bottles she suggested very much. I have been in the service industry for years and know it is not difficult to be friendly and engaged with your guests, especially when they are spending that kind of money!

After-theater dining, though kitchen closes I believe at 10pm [we were given appropriate notice]. Sicilian red wine was served at >70 degrees, had to have it cooled down. Odd for a restaurant with a wine focus. Citrus butter lettuce salad was delicious--pungent and fresh. Cheese selection nicely done. Cookies for dessert were slightly dry and really more a share-able portion than for an individual. Prices are rather high. Overall I prefer Cork on 14th St NW in Logan/U St corridor -- more distinctly-flavored food and a superior price-performer.

We've eaten at Proof numerous times. Food and service have always been superb. Not so last night. Our male server obviously didn't get his role in Night of the Living Dead. He was brusque, cold, and borderline rude. Food was delicious. Two great bottles of wine. While we were having our second round of tapas (six in total), we asked for another plate of Lavash. He said a second plate is $3. We said you're joking. He walked away. The manager backed him up, saying the Lavash is very expensive to make and this is restaurant policy. We just spent well over $200 for three of us. Comp the damn bread. Proof antagonized three loyal diners. Work on your people skills. The manager was plain rude.

Made reservations a few weeks in advance. Wanted to change them the day before to a little later but nothing available. Was looking forward to having dinner at a busy, happening restaurant that people were talking about. Walked in and the place was practically empty. The menu was different than what I saw online so pickings were slim. Everything was pricey which would of been ok if the food and ambience measured up, but they didn't. The goat cheese honey with flatbread was tasty. The gnocchi was medicre. The mushroom with mozzarella was not good at all. I had high expectations and was not impressed. Won't go back.

Proof is a very popular restaurant, so make sure you plan in advance if you want a table after 5:30. I started with a lemon drop martini, which was average, then moved on to the potato gnocchi, which was delicious. Followed this with the duck breast with risotto which was tender and nicely flavored. The sticky toffee dessert was more than enough for two. Very sweet, but oh so heavenly if you like caramel! My problem was that I ordered dishes with too many carbs. Only suggestion would be to add more green salads to the menu. Our server was attentive, but not overly so. He gets 5 stars for not saying "absolutely" once!

Went after theater. Service was attentive. Got charcuterie plate and a few appetizers. Food incredibly good, and just the right amount of food. The server had warned us the the charcuterie platter was THE BOMB. Really generous and well worth the price. Simply delicious. We got the quinoa, green peas, and gnocchi appetizers. Just delightful. All of it. Only negative thing is that the wine list is really not all that accessible (in the price sense) to the average diner. Wines are far too expensive, and there are too many of them to ponder. Even the glasses of wine come in three price points based on the size of the pour, and the medium pour (6.5oz) is around $13. Still, the food and competent service made up for most everything else.

Food was good, not great. What ruined my experience was the lack of affordable wine(under$100). Wine selection is very extensive, but lets get real. Anyone can find a great wine for over $300 a bottle! We spent including tip over $200 a person for our 3 course dining extravaganza. That this place is rated #8 in the DC area is incredible. Do your self a favor and skip this place if you are planning on having wine with your meal. Lot's of other great choices to pick from. That is, unless you have an expense account, where no one cares how much your spend is.
