A word from Promenade Cafe and Wine
It's starting to look like Paris on the Prairies, as Winnipeg's French Quarter undergoes a renaissance all of its own. Linked to the city by a quaint pedestrian bridge, the area known as Old St. Boniface is thriving as the center of franco-Manitoban culture. And looking out at the neighborhood's lamp-lit streets from Promenade Bistro, you'd be forgiven for momentarily imagining the Champs-Élysées.
In a streamlined room set off by a large bank of windows on the banks of the red river with views of the Provencher bridge and Canadian Human rights museum.

  • "the French Onion and the Potato Leek soup of the day were both guilty of way too much salt. Spoiled both of these items. The Beef bourginion was also oversalted and did not have very much in the way of beef in the dish. My 100 Mile Chicken was tender and moist but lacked flavor. The Duck seemed to be the best dish of the evening. For a Friday evening was not very busy. Wondering if the food quality had something to do with it. Definitely not as good as we remembered from past visits."

  • "On our first visit the food and services was very good. However, on our second visit the food was cold and the service slow but friendly. On our first visit the restaurant was only half full while on our the second it was a full house. Not sure if good food and service is only provided when the restaurant is not busy. When we voiced concerns over the cold food the server said they could warm the meals or we could have one free dessert and our coffee at half price. As we had already waited close to an hour for our food this was not an option for our table of eight. After again expressing our concerns with our food the server once again had to go back to the kitchen and she then advised they would pay for the coffee."

This is not a complaint but I thought there were too many vegetable compared to the amount of the beef. I like beef but not to beef."

  • "Everyone enjoyed thier meal....only thing was.....by the time my husband ordered, it was assumed he would be having the 1/2 order of salmon but would have preferred the whole ....wasn't asked ( the rest of the table was having the 1/2 order). As well, a couple of us were sharing a bottle of white...and our server assumed we all would share, and one of us would have preferred to order a glass of red...but wasn't asked if they would like somethime themselves. Our server was very pleasant, and the space itself was very nice. Next time we'll try to come a little later, and get a space in the front room where the music is. Thanks for a lovely evening."

  • "We had a party of 15. The service was slow and we waited a long time for our food to arrive. The appetizers should have been brought out when others had salad but came just before the entrées were served. The room was too dark to read the menu and we all needed to use the flash lights from our cell phones to see the menu. The food was excellent. I liked the option of ordering half sizes with all menu items. I also liked the wine pairing they suggested on the menu for your choice of entrées. Bread and butter are extra but well worth it. The garlic butter is wonderful and the bread is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I would recommend the pork medallions in the brandy sauce as well as the French Onion soup."

You simply can't beat fine French cuisine...And the prix fixe menu was superb and an incredible value. It took a while for the waiter to ask and get us our first drink, which is unusual for Promenade, but it was smooth sailing thereafter."

  • "The options, while certainly not the full menu, were plentiful for a prix-fixe menu. An amuse-bouche came before anything else. My girlfriend order the lobster-and-smoked salmon risotto and i got the roasted red pepper bisque to start. Both were so good, we had to swap halfway through. She then got the salmon and i had the pork steak with pistachio crust. Dessert was a trio of confections, doubled on a single plate. I cannot say enough about the food. Truly among the best i've ever had the privelege of tasting. I've heard that the everyday breakfast menu is equally great"

  • "The entire evening (January 31) was perfect. Our waiter was wonderful! A young fellow with a lovely French accent. He was unimposing and attentive. Two at our table ordered wine; two did not. Not for a moment did our waiter make us feel awkward as so many do when you don't order alcohol. We shared three abundant and delicious appetizers - mussels, calamari, and a salad, as well as an order of bread. We could easily have stopped there but went on to order the salmon with Saskatoons, gnocchi, and a beef bourguinon. We made room for two desserts -they were each wonderful. Although every table was full, the restaurant's atmosphere was exceptionally calm and quiet. With regard to price, the quality of the food and service far exceed the prices."

  • "Food was fine. Worst service ever. With loads of empty tables, they sat our table, and ours alone, on folding bridge chairs. Each of 4breakfasts came out at a different time, so each of us ate alone, one by one. They made errors inthe orders, which then had to be sent back even after theyal came out separately. it didn't feel like a real restaurant, just a bit of a joke. I would never want to go back."

  • "First time dining at this restaurant and it was a great experience. Our cesar salad came in a timely manner and tasted great. The wine selection was superb and our server offered us a taste in certain sweet wines. We ended up buying a bottle and enjoyed Gavurtz very much. The presentation of the grilled steak in peppercorn sauce as well as pork tenderloin was pleasant and the quality was even better. Prices were reasonable. I would suggest a dessert menu as I had to walk to the front to view my selection. The chocolate creme brulee hit the spot and we ended up leaving very satisfied."

  • "my salmon did not taste fresh, my rice was tasty but gummy. my bfs food tasted of only butter. the salad was very tangy and boring. the amuse bouch was tasty but i dont enjoy shellfiish perhaps 1 could have been something else. desserts were very sweet and could have been a touch smaller. the bun with herbed butter was the highlight of the evening. the price was steep considering the food was only 'okay'."

The restaurant is a little dark at dinner time, which creates a romantic atmosphere, however, it was a little hard for some to read the menu. Overall, a great restaurant with a beautiful view of downtown."

  • "This is definitely a gem of a restaurant and it's breathtaking location cannot be beat in St. Boniface. All of the staff were super friendly and knowledgeable about the great selection of wines. The food was very tasty and very French. We had the Beef Bourguignon and the Bison Tourtiere Pie and both were great - super hearty and perfect for a chilly winter night. Their on-site pastry chef creates a whole showcase of desserts each week so we were able to finish off dinner with great flair too! The live entertainment on Saturdays after 8:30pm was a nice touch too."

  • "We had dinner here on December 21 with another couple. All of us had the fixed price four course meal, 2 of us had the wine pairings that came with each course. It was all delicious. The first course was a house made pate with picked red onions, grainy Dijon, some croustini,a and gherkins. Next was a lovely cream of roasted vegetable soup. The main course was salmon filet in a creamy horseradish sauce with a wild rice blend and green beans with red peppers. And dessert was an incredible warm caramel nut coffee cake that came with real whipped cream. The service was attentive and pleasant, and the courses were nicely spaced. There was also wonderful live music between 8:30 and 10:30 - flute and guitar playing mostly Christmas music."

  • "My girlfriends and I met to do our 27th baking exchange. Although the restaurant was busy, our server took good care of us, and accommodated all of our requests. Coffee and water kept flowing.My omelette was superb, and I was especially pleased that the kitchen remembered to replace the hash browns with the sliced tomato. My friend, who had the oatmeal, said that it was most substantial and piping hot, just the way she likes it. We will definitely be coming back!"
