  • Romantic dinner at Primo

Primo has had years to perfect the ambiance, the wait staff, and the food presentation and it is a quality restaurant that is worth going to. However I have the opportunity to nitpick and so I will mention just two things. The floors are an old yellow pine and they do need to be refinished. The varnish is owing off. Definitely needs attention. The second has to do with the lobster and linguini dish that I had ordered. The lobster tasted fresh and wonderful but the linguini was very bland to the point of being tasteless. A very mild dish like lobster needs an accompaniment that has some flavor and pizazz. When we return I'll expect that that problem is solved.

with all the accolades and award notations, I would say the food is as expected. well cooked and seasoned, delivered in a timely manner, by attentive wait staff. The changing menu on-line is not always the menu you may see upon arrival. We received a nice amuse bouche deep fried crab cake with a remoulade as a welcome... thank you :-) The salad appetizer that included apples. .the apples were quite mealy. My duck breast may have needed to rest longer, as the au jus seeped everywhere on the plate (and a serer forgot my request for bread refresh at entre delivery) The duck fat fried fingerling frites were lost under the sliced breast, no discernible crisp to them, and rendered soggy in the pile-o-food on the plate. They deserved a more noticeable role in the meal having been touted as specially prepared. The Rigatoni and Italian sausage pasta dish was quite average except for the addition of greens, which quickly became a sampling of long grass as one chewed. The profiteroles were quite nice, gelato and caramel and chocolate, but three served a s a dessert portion was unnecessary except to justify the $11 dolce menu list inclusion. great attention to water glasses, removing plates, silverware, delightful staff (although the 'kid' that went on about the 'snout to tail' feeding the pigs with restaurant scraps .. 'pigs that we raise here' might need to review the intent of the restaurant to comply with laws on feeding swine foods that have not been re-cooked to 140 degrees for an hour before feeding. I realize the challenges of Maine in the Winter, and maintaining excellence. but the prices and descriptions and noted awards invite critical expectations. I expect to see 'seat pressed laurels with Winter sourced bitter greens' appear on the menu .... or maybe I already had it.

Overall our experience was terrific. There were three of us. We had two starters: mussels and chicken livers - both were FANTASTIC. Then we shared a cavatelli/mushroom dish that was terrific. We should have stopped there, as we were full enough, but no, we ordered three entrees, as well. One pasta - brilliant. One duck - brilliant and beautiful. One pork saltimbocca - good, but not nearly as inspired as everything else.

A good friend who had been to Primo gave us a gift certificate there as a wedding gift. Bold, given that we live in Cambridge, MA (3.5 hours south of Rockland, ME), but she knows us very well, and definitely made an excellent judgement call! We celebrated our first anniversary with dinner at Primo. From the before-dinner drinks at the copper bar, to the amazingly crafted appetizers and main courses (including a can't-get-fresher-than-this pork chop, just slaughtered from their farm the day before)....we were impressed. I had commented via OpenTable that we would be celebrating our anniversary, and in response, the restaurant presented us with a special mini-dessert.

I have eaten only twice in Primo. Yet each experience was sophisticated, enjoyable and memorable. The first time we stumbled on this place and loved every moment of it. It was a late summer evening and the upstairs window spot was perfect. Apart from regular chairs, there are divans next to the windows with comfortable pillows. Lovely ambiance. The next time we were there was on 30 October 2014. We drove 200 miles just to have dinner. Their fish and bread soup is fantastic. Another appetizer was pork/chicken sausages. As we went on, a lovely waitress brought us an exceptionally delicious, warm, flavorful butternut squash to be taken as a shot!! The scallop dish is fab. Desserts not to be missed. Primo is ridden with fab subtleties!!

This time of year there are no crowds, just a good number of diners, so we were seated in one of the dining rooms. Very nice, food great as was service. We will be back.

We had a tremendous meal the other night at Primo's. The food was amazing. The menu was so scrumptious we had a hard time deciding what to order. Wonderful service, great wine selection. We got there early so that we could walk around the gardens and I'm glad we did. They do an amazing job growing their own vegetables and it's definitely worth a look around. I can't wait to go back again.

A beautiful concept to create meals that use the freshest ingredients, locally grown produce, and interesting ways to prepare the dishes. Service was excellent and the restaurant is cozy. The bar area upstairs also looked like a great place to enjoy what this restaurant has to offer. Wine list is fairly heavily European-based and being from California we would have liked more variety and found the markup a bit steep. Portions are generous and presentation is beautiful. Only quibble -sometimes less is more. Sometimes having so many elements in a dish doesn't make it more appealing or enhance the taste of it.

No joke. Very good duck soup with wonderful filled tortellini. This must be my 4th or 5th review in the past year or so? And we just keep coming back. I hit notable wine list here only because I think it's a bit much. Lots of pricey wines. But then Primo is both notable and pricey. I dared to have the special bone in pork chop tonight. Huge. Excellent. A best ever chop. And she used hot peppers in the ragu. Again, excellent. And they're hot. Don't leave without a piece of that Lucifero cheese. And their cannoli are really, very darn good!

The old house the restaurant occupies is beautiful. Each of the rooms are laid out with generously sized tables, even just for two. You will blink in surprise at the first sip of your cocktail. Each that I tried had a perfect balance of flavors. Once the first course arrives, you will forget you are in a room much less a house. Every course was inventive, perfectly prepared, and presented by an expert staff. You do a crime against your own tastebuds if you pass an opportunity to dine here.

Im not sure why ithers left poor reviews this plce is great. Food is great and wait staff is super friendly. We had a great table by the window and they even gave my wife a free dessert for her birthday. It is a little expensive plan for over 100 for a couple but it's definitely worth it. Make sure you ask or wait for a good table because there are a few tables that are cramped together. Overall best experience in Maine so far.

From start to finish, this was a true foodie experience. Melissa Kelly does not disappoint. Every single item that we chose, from both the Bar Menu, and the Dinner Menu was superb. Perfect flavor combos with over the top ingredients. On top of producing a twist on oldtime favorites (Bolognese), creativity was a pure TEN! Orlando is fantastic - but the Mother Ship rocks in Rockland Maine.

Went here solo on advice of my cousin and husband who are foodies. I was wary as I am trying to eat more vegetarian but the menus she told me about featured so much meat. I was surprised to learn that the chef will make accommodations and adjust the menu! I had a fabulous butternut squash cannelloni with ricotta cheese that was out of this world! For appetizer the apple salad was great for the fall. And dessert was a plum and blueberry crostata with ricotta gelato-simply divine. Would go again in a heart beat. Worth the hour drive there from Palermo and then through monsoon rains on the way home!

I WANTED THIS REVIEW TO BE A PRIVATE NOTE TO THE RESTAURANT BUT COULD NOT DO SO BECAUSE OF THE WORD COUNT We have been to Primo's several times before (we live in Portland); and we were very much looking forward to this return visit. We brought visitors from London and reserved 3 weeks in advance. Unfortunately, our service was barely adequate with the receptionists bordering on rude. The food was also not up to standard. For a restaurant of this reputation and price, we very disappointed. I doubt that we will return for a long time if ever; and we certainly will not be recommending Primo to friends.

We always make a trip to Primo when we are in the area. Be sure to bring your wallet as the excellent meal also has an equal but fair price tag.

This was our first time at Primo and it was very good. We enjoyed the meal, the food and service was excellent. It was a special occasion for us so worth the money but not for us for every day dining! It would be tough to get out of there for less than 100 dollars for a couple. If your looking for a high end dining experience I suspect this is tough to beat. If you an average every day Joe there might be better options... :) We really enjoyed the "Farm to table" experience. I'd like to see more restaurants doing this and bringing the costs down.

Primo is a beautiful restaurant. Food ingredients are harvested from their own farm. Both our apetizers were really special. My husband had 5 crustinis with different toppings. My calamari had a sauce with capers, olives, tomatoes and cuscous. My husband's entree was almost a stew with fall vegetables and different cuts of beef. I ordered quail dish but did not enjoy it as much. We will include this restaurants we enclude every timr we visit Maine.
