Diner Reviews
  • "Really wonderful cuisine; all five dishes we had were either excellent or truly outstanding. Best were two pasta options, for which half-size appetizer portions were available. Portions ranged from sane (the pastas, a tuna entree) to frustratingly gargantuan (the duck and scallop and swordfish dishes observed at an adjacent table). Our server was not able to help us select a wine, and promised assistance from a sommelier, but that guy never did show up. We did end up with a very satisfactory wine, but it was a special occasion and with assistance would have stretched for something more soecial. Bussing was erratic; at one point we were eating a course while three dirty plates remained on the table."

  • "Our dinner last Sunday evening was one of our best in recent memory. It was superb in every category. She had the swordfish, I had the pork Saltimbocca (described as the chef/owner's specialty). Sadly, our Maine vacation came to an end or we'd have been back for seconds. I recommend this place enthusiastically! If you go, go early to tour the grounds. Exquisite!"

  • "Primo is an exceptional dining treat: food, service ambiance. Though not an inexpensive restaurant, the phrase is, "You get what you pay for". At Primo you pay a lot, you get a lot. I'm an artist, not a stock broker, therefore very discerning about how I appropriate my funds. For me dining at Primo is an unbelievable, intoxicating experience not to be missed if one is able. Additionally, it's located in central coastal Maine, a gem in itself."

  • "Every summer we vacation in Boothbay Harbor and every summer we make our reservations way in advance to dine at Primo. The food is always fresh, creative, and consistent. The wait staff is very attentive, making sure everything is as it should be. We always enjoy our dining experience at Primo while visiting Maine."

  • "Our meal was everything we had hoped for and more! Holly was an amazing server who had great knowledge about everything good and great, pairings and just some good local tips. We loved the laid-back feel of everything, but appreciated the love and craft that went into our meal from start to finish. One of the best dining experiences we've ever had!"

  • "Over our years visiting Primo for intimate family celebrations, we have always been delighted with food and service. We are now vegan for health reasons and wondered if that could be accommodated. The Chef delivered an entree worthy of the most exclusively vegan friendly reataurants along with a presentation one comes to anticipate from the specials featured. The menu was varied eniugh to meet the preferences of meat, fish, or pasta lovers. It was an exceptional experience to ask about a soecial dietary request and be met with, "Certainly, let me ask the chef what she recommends." Highly recommended."

  • "We had an early dinner here last Saturday night, lovely gardens as you walk in. We were lucky enough to get Ed as our waiter, (we get to the Rockland area about once a summer and make it a point to try to get a reservation at Primo and had Ed as our waiter last year) Ordered a Spring Blossom house drink, been thinking about that since last year. I had the deep fried Squash Blossom stuffed with mozzarella and anchovy for an appetizer and the Rouget (or red mullet stuffed with crab on a bed of corn) Both excellent dessert was the Pistachio pudding with creme brûlée topping. Ed recommended a nice white wine with the fish and all the staff made it a memorable evening."

  • "We loved our first meal at Primo. The food was creatively presented, fresh and tasted wonderful. Our server, Kevyn, was helpful and unpretentious. We'll definitely try the Tucson Primo when we get home."

  • "Food: Fresh, well prepared, creative and interesting! Very competent and friendly wait staff. This is a restaurant that you want to go back whenever you get a chance. We drove one hour to go there and it was worth it."

  • "The service was excellent, ambience beautiful and food outstanding. We have also visited the restaurant in Tucson, Arizona and I must admit that I am more fond of the east coast restaurant in Maine. It is sure worth the visit. Make sure you make reservations!"

  • "Everything we'd heard about this place -- food, service, ambience -- was true. Don't miss the Zeppole for dessert (fresh fried donuts that make the best beignets seem like lead weights)."

  • "This restaurant should be more concerned with the customer experience. We were finally seated at 8:30pm for an 8pm reservation for which we arrived 20 minutes early. We weren't offered drinks or an apology. The menu is limited and the restaurant is very loud. We had much better meals and service at other restaurants during our stay in Maine, which is unfortunate since Primo came highly recommended. We will not go back."

  • "There is not much bad one can say about Primo. We had a really lovely evening. Although the menu changes each day, highlights of our meal was the Chicken Milanese and the stuffed zucchini blossom."

  • "The food was fabulous as always. Our waitress was wonderful and attentive but there seemed to be a lot of new staff and the food runners were serving to the wrong tables and not serving all meals at the same time. But overall I would highly recommend and I will be going again!!!!"

  • "Myself and my wife both felt the food was great however we were sat upstairs and it was way to loud for a romantic night alone. I would go back however I would definitely asked to be sat downstairs in the formal dinning area."

  • "4th time here. We come to Maine once a year, for a week, and would NOT miss having dinner here. The food is extremely well thought out and prepared."

  • "We visited Primo for our 30th anniversary. The farm to table concept provided exceedingly fresh and interesting fare. The selections were not your average dishes. Staff were incredibly knowledgeable, responsive and professional. Cocktails were delicious and incorporated local herbs. Beer and wine selections were well chosen and the staff's recommedations demonstrated great familiarity with them and how to pair them. Our food was overall outstanding. The sirloin we chose was not cooked to order, but was close and still delicious. The waiter immediately offered to take it back, though we declined for overall timing of the meal. Dessert was comped, however and an additional (heavenly) dessert added so the staff did well in making things right."

  • "the food was amazing, creative, unique, delicious, memorable but the service was slow. Too many long moments in between servings, lack of attention. Our waiter was training a new waitress. I cancelled our second reservation later in the week. We'd go back but will wait for our next trip north."

  • "This place turned out to be something really special! This is one of those places you may remember forever. Food, presentation, the interior, service and wine were all out of this world."

  • "Our dinner was a celebration of my son's and daughter's anniversaries; they, their spice, and my husband and I were a "sixtop." I'd requested a round table, since it enhances general conversation greatly, and that request was honored, and the anniversaries were acknowledged (subtly, as is our preference...with HappyAnniversary written in chocolate on the dessert plates.) Benjamin, our server, was a delight....friendly, personal, professional, totally helpful ( as were his "acolytes" who teamed to bring all the plated meals simultaneously from the BUSY,AMAZINGLY COORDINATED kitchen of which I caught a glimpse. The food was PERFECT in creativity, taste, beauty, as always. We have done this for over five years and will return! THANKS!!"

  • "This place is beautiful. It's just outside of the city in an old lovely house set on a farm. Probably over 90% of the menu is local, and quite a bit of it comes from the farm in the back. It's like a New England old world version of Blue Hill in NY on a smaller scale but with the added advantage of the proximity to the sea. The food is not terribly innovative, but everything is well executed, thoughtful, and flavorful with beautiful presentations in a charming setting."

  • "I ordered the lamb and it was undercooked and not that interinesting. Others at the table were underwhelmed."

  • "We heard about Primo on Tony Bourdains show on Maine, and made a point to visit this trip! It is amazing - each dish was an adventure with layers of flavors adding so much depth. Highlights for us include the porcini-crusted striploin (best steak of my life to date) and the duck entree. Appetizers and dessert were amazing as well - I am now obsessed with making a baked Alaska! Service was friendly and efficient and servers were knowledgeable about the food! All in all is definitely in my top 5 restaurant experiences! We will be back!"

  • "We scheduled the day to end up in Rockland, Maine for a 6 o'clock seating. It was our wedding anniversary. The pre-arranged flowers were on the table, site in the dining room was perfect. The wait staff was super friendly and not pushy. They knew the menu and the wine list and offered recommendations when asked. This is the second time we have dined at Primo so our expectations were high and they were exceeded. Lovely presentation, unique combinations, fresh produce, excellent timing of the meal and save room for the freshly prepared on site dessert. Everything that we had hoped our dinner would be. Primo is a great farm to table dining experience. We walked the on site farm/gardens after dinner."

  • "Maybe it was us but our experience was just so-so. For the price (high) we expect great tasting dishes. My duck was cooked as per asked but had little taste and nothing to enhance it. My wife's chicken was very good tho. Need some little flowers on the table to make it seem nicer."

  • "Even in June, our tourists have arrived. It's a 2-hour round trip for us, but that won't stop us. Excellent foie gras. Their pastas as a secondi are a must to split and share. Their wine list is very good, if a bit pricey. But so is Primo, it's that good. They seemed to have hired new waiters though. Experience and maturity always works well, but they're very polite, very attentive, and efficient. We both had fish this trip, salmon and halibut, and my wife kept to her bread and fish soup appe out of devotion and love for it."

  • "We've been to Primo-Rockland a couple times and have consistently been delighted by the food and the service. The appetizers and entrees are really interesting--with a variety of complementing ingredients that make for great dishes. Presentations are imaginative without being ostentatious. We look forward to our next visit."

  • "Downtown Rockland, Maine -- and many midcoast towns are now chockablock with fine restaurants -- but Primo remains, well, primo. We hadn't been there in many years until this past Saturday night, and the wait was worth it. The staff is (somehow) simultaneously casual and professional, and the food is superlative. The bread-and-fish soup has to be among the best seafood soups/chowders I've ever tasted. The grilled chicken livers (both of these are appetizers) beats anything you've ever thought of, when it comes to c. livers. Ditto the entrees. Fabulous wine list. Lovely surroundings. What is there to say? If you haven't been to Primo, get thee hence."

  • "We celebrated an important wedding anniversary with you last Saturday and were delighted with everything. Beautifully prepared delicious food, a wonderful atmosphere, attentive servers and marvelous special additions to the dinner (a seafood bisque topped by a small stuffed pastry shell and scrumptious home made chocolate at the end of our meal) made for a marvelous evening. Everything was perfect. Barbara & Joseph S."

  • "My boyfriend took me out to an amazing dinner here at Primo. With an Italian and Mediterranean inspired menu, we had many tough options to chose from. There are 4 acres of kitchen gardens and livestock located on premises that supply the restaurant with the freshest ingredients. We started out with a brick oven pizza with fresh eggplant, basil, and mozzarella cheese. The crust was cooked to perfection and the taste of the ingredients were just so fresh. I knew this was only the start to an amazing night. Primo has an extensive and finely chosen wine list as well as artisanal breads, homemade pastas and gelato. This Restaurant was by far one of the most amazing places i have ever been to. Our server"
