We visited Maine for a wedding and a guest told us we MUST stop by here and we're glad we did. We had a late night reservation and ended up dining at the bar because we didn't want to wait that long for our table. We're glad we did, the bartenders were great. Had wonderful recommendations and the food was fantastic.

Everything about this restaurant is special. There was nothing about this place that we did not enjoy, especially the food! We celebrated my wife's birthday and the staff was so accommodating. She even met the famous chef, Ms. Kelly. We are from SC, but we will come back.

  • Good, Not Great
    Disappointing

For the past several visits we've been a bit disappointed. This week one particular dish was stellar - beet ravioli with poached lobster had all of the flavors and inventiveness that made Primo a star from its inception. For the rest of our party, most of the dishes were underwhelming. In particular, the shrimp and grits with monkfish was pretty, but plain and without distinction other than a fiery spice that was overpowering. Stick with their classics and you'll be very satisfied - farmer salad, cavatelli, pork saltimbocca, cannoli ...

We arrived about an hour before our reservation in order to spend some time in the bar for the Thursday oyster special and fantastic cocktails. The burnt orange Negroni was especially tasty. Our table was ready with perfect timing as we finished off our second doz. oysters. Our server did a great job of recommending wine and the food was great!

Everyone always says "Oh, you have to try this place!" when it comes to any restaurant outside the megachains of family dining establishments littering the horizons. While many of those are "good," few of them are "great." Being a fairly traveled person, those are the expectations with which I entered Primo. What I experienced was shock that amounted to accidentally finding out what a glass of cold water feels like while chewing strong mint gum. The food was, in two words, shockingly exquisite. In several words, crafted, well-chosen, well-prepared, well-plated, satisfying, and well-paced. I consider myself a foodie and it was the first perfect meal I've had anywhere since moving to Maine 3 years ago. Thank you, Primo.

We had to wait for our table endlessly (and we weren't the only ones)! Means, with a reservation for 08.30 pm we got our starters eventually at 9:50 pm. The place was overcrowded totally using virtually the last inch to pack guests in. The food was nice, however, for an Italian who was with us not eatable. If they offer "grandma's dishes" they should cook them that way! In fact, the awards presented on the walls are pretty outdated. For what we eventually had payed and gained in return, we can't recommend Primo at all.

My wife and I were on vacation in Maine from Texas for ten days and our son (a chef) recommended that we try Primo. It looked gorgeous, the service was exceptional but the loud table conversations eventually distracted me from the wonderful food. Climbing down off of my soapbox, we had an excellent oyster appetizer cooked two ways. Fried on top of diced potatoes and roasted in a harissa sauce. We also tried a special of poached oysters, the liquor then was used to make the sauce with tasso and bitter greens that went over fantastic spinach linguine. We split a perfectly cooked filet of halibut in a lobster sauce. Dessert was Espresso crunch bar and was marvelous!

I have been trying to get to Primo for five years!!! But the timing had never worked until now. We had read many articles about the farm to table premise for the restaraunt. The experience was everything we had imagined - from the abundant gardens, the comfortable atmosphere, impeccable service, and the outstanding food. The depth and combination of flavors were amazing. We would highly recommend this resaraunt to anyone looking for a special evening.

Unless you live there...you cannot find it at night in the rain or if it is dark outside ..there is NO decent light to illuminate the place. The parking lot is too small and narrow. Then..the swordfish was too spicy for me..our wait staff who cleared my plate must have told the server who then asked what was wrong with the fish...very uncomfortable for me to respond . I felt like I was a child being scolded my parents for not cleaning my plate. The server then told the maître de or someone because then she offered us free Prosecco ..more liquor is NOT the answer. I should have looked at the spices in the dish..so I accept that issue. A complimentary dessert would have been a better compensation. The gal who sat us was very cold .

The Food is some of the best in Maine - imaginative, well presented and delicious. It is in old house so it has a cozy feel with walls, halls and stairs. Unfortunately it is located on a busy state road and diners cannot see the nearby ocean or extensive gardens from the tables

This is my second time to Primo while vacationing in Maine, and it continues to be incredible. I ordered a Nectarini (nectarine bellini), scallops (with pea puree, sweet corn and tomato salad, fried avocado), and the quartetto for dessert (including a whoopie pie to end all whoopie pies). Simply awesome. In addition to the food, the service is equally special. I immediately realized that our waitress was the same waitress we had three years ago, and she is wonderful. She's very friendly and helpful at explaining not just the ingredients but how they work together.

Was here celebrating our honeymoon. Had to wait over 20+ minutes for a glass of wine. Ordered it before our appetizers arrived and didn't get it until my entre was served. That was a bit disappointing and a manager never came over to apologize. Our server did come over 2 separate times to let me know she was checking on the wine. Not sure why it would take so long but definitely not how I imagined our meal to go. Nevertheless, the food was good.

Chef Kelly menue selections and overall quality in terms of flavors/seasonings and aesthetics was excellent. The four of us as foodies enjoyed our experience. We toured the farm gardens and hot houses prior to dining. The noise level was less than expected and the restaurant was at capacity. The relatively small dining rooms have great ambience and tend to keep the noise level down. Service, as expected, was excellent with a very food knowledgable waiter.

Wonderful window table, outstanding service, and well presented, ample and tasty food to boot! A real gem and favorably comparable to anything in the mid-coast area! We loved it and will come again I am sure! Reserve early as reservations are hard to come by as this is the "in" place to dine and for good reason! Our only caveat is price. We knew it was pricy and that was not unexpected, but compared to several other similar type and quality places, the dining experience stands up well, but the price premium is at least 25% more at Primo. It does nothing to diminish the experience, but they are not the "only" place to go for such a value and experience and even spend a more reasonable amount to boot! Go and enjoy - we did!

Service was exquisite but some of the mistakes made here for a high end fine dining restaurant just wouldn't float in NYC and we had better meals at the Norumbega Inn with former CIA Instructor Phil Crispo and at Francine's (though service at Francine's was a little harried and off). The areas to wait at Primo was standing room only - they need to add additional seating to the porch area since bar area is tight and busy with waitstaff. Bread was VERY burned on the bottom -- how does that even leave the kitchen? Duck was medium rare as ordered but surprisingly tough to cut (it should have been like butter) and less flavorful than expected. Kitchen's solution to an onion allergy was unimaginative since "every sauce of ours has onions."

If you're within an hours drive of Rockland, Primo is must visit. We started the meal with the quail, fois gras, oysters and a couple of fresh salads. Everything was on the mark. Tasty, Delicious and flavorful. The quail was especially spectacular. We then had a primo with 2 different inhouse made pastas that were cooked to perfection al dente and accompanied with tomato based ragu and home made ricotta. Moved on to fish dishes with tuna, scallops, snapper. Everything was cooked to perfection. The farm to table freshness and preparation was spot on. Desserts where delicious too. banana cream tart, creme brulee and afogato with beignet like donuts were fresh and fluffy.

My husband I have dined at Primo in Maine 3 times and 1 time in Orlando. Melissa Kelly's food in two words - sheer perfection! We have dined in many fine restaurants and her food stands heads above the rest. We vacation in Maine often and would never think of not including one evening at Primos. Its the hightlight of our vacation.. Last year while in Orlando visitning our daughter we insisted on taking them to Primo for their anniversary. My daughters comment was "now I know what all the fuss is about this place is fabulous!"

We have dined at Primo on numerous occasions and it has consistently been excellent. The building and grounds are very nice. The food is spectacular. The menu changes and it is always difficult to make a choice. I had an octupus salad as an apertizer this last time and it was superb. My wife had rabbit as an entree and I had duck. Both were excellent. Portions were just right and the presentation was perfect. The service was very good although i prefer the waitress not engage in conversation with us and our guests. I hesitate to say how impressed I was with Primo, which is an absolutely first class operation. Not just great food, but great service with the large staff engaged in a smooth ballet of service despite the full restaurant. The next morning, before leaving the area, we returned to see the extensive gardens surrounding the restaurant -- "farm to table" here is a matter of feet, not miles. Why do I hesitate to say how impressed I was? I want to be able to get reservations in the future despite Primo's reputation and popularity. They recently changed their hours to be open for dinner Monday nights, usually a slow night for restaurants, and the place was packed. Primo is outstanding.

We took our son there as an early birthday present. We three are serious foodies and had heard about PRIMO for several years. It was a lovely introduction to the restaurant to drive into one of their parking lots past the vegetable, flower, and herb gardens and little chicken coops, each coop with it's own little house and ramp. Lights out around 7:30 pm. :) We ordered together, choosing three starters and three main courses so that we could try six different dishes. Every single one was superb. It was the best meal I have ever had. Next year my son and his wife are taking us to PRIMO.:)

Primo has a stellar reputation for its outstanding food and ambience. The only flaw was we were rushed. Arrived for a 5:45 reservation, and were ushered out the door by 6:45. Our server was delightful, it was the "clearer" who hovered and immediately cleared the plates, even asking if we were finished when there was food remaining. In retrospect, perhaps we should have stopped her, but didn't expect that at Primo...

My husband and I ate at Primo for my birthday celebration in August. I have always wanted to go, and this was our first visit! We loved it more than we dreamed! The place was packed but we cozied into our space at the bar and felt very comfortable and welcomed. The food... So fresh, so local, so seasonal! Squash blossom stuffed with goat cheese and lightly fried, served with squash ratatoullie from the same plant... Mouthwatering! Service was friendly and spot on, we wanted for nothing and felt like we were being taken care of. Thank you Primo for giving us a wonderful and memorable experience! We will be back (and tell our friends)!

Was here two years ago and loved it then, but the food was even better this time. Wine list featured some hard to find cult wine favorites. Food was inventive and delicious, and our server was superb. Would recommend this highly to foodies. Very fresh and local ingredients. A perfect a Maine experience.
