  • Primo is relatively expensive
    OpenTable Diner Since 2010
    Dined on 8/14/2010
Primo is relatively expensive for Maine. It has a broad menu which changes daily and a nice selection of specials all in the mid $30 range. Appetizers and desserts are about $15. The wine list is very extensive and relatively expensive, but includes a good selection by the glass. Desserts were OK but somewhat anticlimactic after having ordered both an appetizer and an entree. A little self discipline in ordering would, in this reviewers opinion, make for a wonderful experience and not break the bank. Do order one of the entrees, but then choose between an appetizer or a dessert, not both. You would probably find a glass of wine to your liking and that gives each diner the option of a good pairing with the meal. Primo is worth a

The food was fabulous, the service excellent and the ambiance made our evening a most memorable one. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a great evening out!

Primo was outstanding. We went to celebrate my husband's birthday - party of 6 total with our two young children. Really enjoyed touring the grounds ahead of time - restaurant uses a lot of their own grown produce. Hit of the meal was the chicken entree- best chicken I've eaten in years (also, produced on their farm). Everything was delicious, service very good and ambiance terrific. Would definitely return next time we are in Maine!!!

Primo was recommended by a friend. We had a great time in the main restaurant, only I wish I had known about the antipasti bar upstairs as we may have preferred to eat there. It's less expensive, more casual, and our son is a vegetarian and he would have had more choice.

I was interested in Primo because the resturant was featured on Anthony Bordain (a great episode if you have not seen it) on the Food Channel. The food and service were excellent - everything was fresh and carefully prepared. Breads and deserts were fabulous. Well worth the drive and expense. The resturant is set up in a converted victorian home which is lovely but not great with the acoustics if you have more than a party of four.

Primo has always been one of my favorite restaurants in Maine. Food has always been superb, emphasizing seasonality and regionality. Unfortunately, their service has suffered, possibly due to the restaurant's popularity. We came in for an 8:30 pm reservation (through Open Table) and were not seated until 9 pm. Without any apologies (or any birthday greeting for that matter - as this was a birthday dinner celebration), the server took our orders and after being asked to put a slight chill on the wine, disappeared for 15 minutes. Once the dinner service began, things picked up. I would gladly dine in Primo but something needs to be said about the lackadaisical, uninvolved service.

Wonderul! All dishes were beyond expectation. The freshness of the on property grown I ingrediants made already wonderful dishes something truly unique. They also did a good job with our 12 and 15 year olds by letting us split entree and salads and bringing them in beautiful preparation. Worth the journey to Rockland, ME! We had for years wanted to savor Melissa Kelly's food again (had sampled it at the Beard House while she still had her Old Chatham Sheepherding Restaurant). The appetizers, mains and desserts that all four of us sampled (all different) were all superbly and creatively prepared, using fresh, mainly local ingredients. Crust on wood-burning stove pizza was so light and crisp. Amazing duck, served with an incredible carmelized roasted turnip...local cod perfectly cooked served with an orzo lobster version of mac and cheese...pastas (meat and seafood varieties) were also outstanding. From the amuse-bouche to the sweet tidbits offered at the end (including a passion-fruit marshmallow)...all surperb!!

Primo is an amazing place. My boyfriend and I drove up from Boston and it was well worth the drive. Wow! We got to Primo a bit early and roamed the gardens. It was amazing to see all of the fruits and vegetables that were going to be used in our dinner. The restaurant was in an old farm house and was cozy and quaint and very romantic. The meal was amazing. So fresh and flavorful, every flavor complemented itself against another. It was such an amazing and magical meal!

This was our second time at Primo having been inspired to make the trip by CT Magazine. Although aspects of the meal were wonderful (a duck dish ... fried, stuffed squash blossoms) I was surprised that three of our dishes were over salted. We had a perfect meal at Primo four years ago. An exceptional experience at a restaurant that promotes local provisions, both purchased and home grown/raised. The quality of the ingredients are outstanding...and they are prepared in ways to let them show. Every dish we had was perfectly cooked (the best halibut...incredibly moist with a seared crust). The flavors are both complex and harmonious. Seasonal items are apparent in the long list of special offerings. Service was attentive, well informed and very attuned to responding to our requests. Reservations are almost mandatory, any day they are open...though they do offer some specialty sections that are available for walk-ins... If you have the opportunity..go to Primo.

Primo was completely amazing, a real treasure in Rockland. The food was innovative and exquisite--the best of the fresh vegetables and seafood available in the area. The service was also professional and made me feel very welcome. I dined solo, but I never felt neglected. The main waitress (they work in teams, I think) even went to the bartender and specifically asked for a sommelier recommendation for a wine to accompany my swordfish; I got an amazing glass of Spanish white wine that wasn't listed on the menu. Take time to walk through the gardens; they're both beautiful and inspirational if you like to cook. I only wish it were closer to my home!
