Diner Reviews
  • "In good weather, the outdoor seating area is amazing. First time I've been to this restaurant and the food was very good. Excellent menu selection and service."

  • "First visit for dinner. I got there a little early and sparked up some conversation with the staff at the bar. They were very helpful to make recommendations from the menu. Great meal and good atmosphere while having a conversation with a dear friend."

  • "When I am in town for meetings at GWU, I often have business lunches here. This time, we had a slightly larger group and reserved for dinner. The place was packed, creating a lively and happy atmosphere. The service was excellent, food terrific. The atmosphere encouraged lively conversation. My only complaint is that it can be a bit pricey--but for a high-class meal, in a casual environment, where you feel well taken care of, it's worth the splurge."

  • "I have been going to PP since the day it opened and love it's no fuss style, simple and delicious food. The owner is always welcoming and friendly, and even when I show up without a reservation, he always seats my group, and never at some hole in the wall table. As an old customer, it's important to feel appreciated."

  • "Could be the best ever -tender and melted in your mouth. On a Monday night so no way to judge what it is like normally but staff was very attentive, risotto special with shrimp was excellent and chop recommendation was perfect. Will go again!"

  • "Had a very lovely and enjoyable dinner. Food was excellent as well as the service. My husband had the tonnarelli con cacao e pepe which he loved. A simple dish but well done."

  • "One of Washington's best. We dine here a dozen times a year and it is always an enjoyable experience."

  • "We recently dined here prior to an evening at the Kennedy Center. The food was very good, the service was friendly and attentive, and the ambience was pleasant. The mixed salad was plentiful and fresh with a light dressing which I liked but my guest found a bit too acidic. Among us, we had gnocchi with a rabbit ragu, risotto, and chicken. The gnocchi was my favorite and the risotto was quite good. The chicken was interesting but perhaps a little too exotic for some tastes--especially in an Italian restaurant. The chocolate cake was good as well as was the cappuccino. Overall, we really enjoyed our meal and will definitely return."

  • "So, here I am again at P Piatti - with my daughter who is a local student. Ordered 2 pastas. Waiter was convinced that what my daughter wanted did not exist (although she had had it just weeks before) and I ordered my usual. First - portions were smaller than usual (a small mound of pasta in a big white bowl) second - my pasta was dry and the sauce seems to have congealed. Her pasts was swimming in a sauce so thin that you could see the water at the edges of it. Besides being visited by the clueless waiter once initially to drop bread and the second time to drop plates - we were at a "self service" event. Not up to standard - no need to visit again"

  • "We had not been to Primi Piatti for several years and really enjoyed our meal there. The food was excellent, the service attentive and the ambience charming. We appreciated that the ambience allowed for good conversation without competing to be heard among other guests. Great location that should a real find for visitors to our city. We will return again soon."

  • "This restaurant has been around for a long time and it's been consistent with good food and service. The fish of the day and the veal were tasty and well-prepared."

  • "Primi Piatti can always be relied upon for good cooking in a pleasant atmosphere. Seafood and pasta here are delicious. While I love fried calamari, this dish will disappoint here and the pricetag will stun as well. Service is wonderful and makes for a lovely visit."

  • "Upscale. .. I would say fancy. Waiters and staff all over the place. The food came out lightning fast and it was delicious. Pizzas were delicious, and the gnochi was so good. Sauce was rememberable."

  • "Overall good food, but over priced. Btw-they charge for still water which we were not told when given option on sparking or still. I was very disappointed with the wine list-the only Italian pinot grigio they had by glass was $16-I tried the CA option which was terrible as was the sauvignon blanc. I finally settled on a red blend which was nice. My food was good-I had a shaved zucchini salad which was wonderful and a shrimp with sundried tomato and fennel starter (but never found the fennel-when asked waiter told me it was in another dish but was listed on menu in this one), My boyfriend got a pizza with arugula and prosciutto which was delicious-."

  • "This restaurant has been around awhile so it's not on the radar of most people now. But the service is first class, the staff has the old school charm and manners of the past, and the food is high quality. The pastas are homemade and very flavorful. They will make you any Italian dish you want if it's not on the menu. They really strive to make you feel comfortable and tended to. It's really a great place to do business, have a quiet meal, enjoy a romantic dinner, get a group together."

  • "We had not been to Primi Piatti in many years, and then only for lunch. We met friends there on a Saturday night and we were all pleased with the atmosphere and service. After sharing fried calamari, we ordered the insalata mixta, beef ravioli, and the evening's pasta special, fettuccine with shrimp and asparagus. Most dishes were very good, except the latter was way too salty, a common problem at many Washington area restaurants. We finished with a chocolate cake and decaf. While the food was passable, the service and atmosphere made for a very pleasant evening."

  • "Primi Piatti is, as always, an enjoyable dining experience! Seafood risotto on Saturday evening was amazing; full of seafood and perfectly cooked risotto with 'not so over the top' sauce! My fellow diners (all five) were very pleased with their meals!"

  • "Really enjoyed Primi Piatti. Fresh bread and Italian wine was a great start. I loved the option of a zucchini salad and it was really good. My daughter did not like her arugula salad:-( All entrees were great! Veal chop special, risotto special and orecchiette. The most unique was the risotto...it was finished tableside by stirring the cooked risotto and mushrooms in a huge parmesan rind...the flavor this added was amazing. For dessert we had cappuccinos and hazelnut torte. Cappuccino was excellent, torte was just good."

  • "I love Italian food so I picked this place as my birthday dinner spot for my husband and I. The appetizers weren't very tasty, but the entree's were DELICUOUS. The service was good but a little confusing. I won't be back."

  • "The food is decent and maintains the same quality, it is nice for lunch, specially when the weather is nice. But there has been so many more good restaurants. Recommend for lunch."

  • "The owner-chef must not be spending enough time in his kitchen. Non-descript pork cheek sauce on pasta, very average individual size pizza for $16. Pretty tasteless zucchini parmesan appetizer. Avoid the wild boar, which sounded great on the menu. Very sweet somewhat slimy sauce with chocolate and raisins served over a small buried portion of polenta for starch. Our first 3 choices from the wine list were unavailable, so ordered the least expensive Chianti ($39). It was terrible, no flavor or character at all To their credit, when we complained about the wine quality our waiter immediately offered to replace it with another bottle, and we then drank the Asti Barbera which he recommended, ($46), and it was quite decent."

  • "My valentine and I ventured out into D.C. without a reservation that busy night. We accepted our mistake and moved along calling each restaurant that caught out eye, hoping for no more than a 60-minute wait. We finally succeed with Primi Piatti. I ordered the Orecchiette con Rapini (Orecchiette w/ rapini flavored w/ pancetta, garlic, hot pepper & a bit of aged ricotta cheese), very tasty. takes the gold medal by ordering the Fettuccine al Nero con Grancho e Scampi (Black ink fettuccini with Crabmeat and Shrimp flavored with Garlic, Olive Oil and hot Pepper). Even tastier, and both meals were undeniably freshly made. The only real downer was the check, a bit steep honestly, but we still walked away satisfied with our selection."

  • "We had a guest speaker in town to take to dinner, but it was a snow day. A number of restaurants were closed downtown, but we had reservations at Primi Piatti and we kept calling them to see if they were open. They did not notify us that they were closed, nor did they change their voicemail message to indicate they were closed, so we walked over there and found it complete dark. Luckily, District Commons answered their phone and were able to accommodate us. I was very disappointed that they did not do anything either before or after to apologize for not being open. I hope next time when they know snow is coming they take their reservation book home and call people to let them know they'll be closed or at least change their message."

  • "My wife and I went there for Valentines Day. Everything went like clockwork. The food was excellent in quality and appearance. The owner was on the floor and fully engaged. Service was too good.... We had anticipated spending an hour and a half to two hours enjoying our meal and each others company, but found ourselves served and finished in under an hour... Other than feeling a bit rushed, there was absolutely nothing to complain about."

  • "Too often you get in the rut of the sam places for business lunches. Primi Piatti switches it up in style. The food is excellent, there are unique wine selections, and the bar area provides a great dining experience."

  • "Primi Piatti is a bit of a throwback to a time when "good" restaurants were comfortable and reasonably quiet places in which to meet and drink with friends and associates while being taken good care of and, as a bit of an afterthought, to enjoy a decent meal at decent prices. Service is attentive and comfortably measured; no server introduced himself or made himself part of the table conversation. The wine list had good choices at good prices, along with some pricier special offerings. The home-made pasta was heavy and probably overworked before it was cooked. Vegetables could have been better with a lighter hand on the garlic. Bread sticks were snappy and good. I'd go back, but not with a foodie in tow."

  • "I work south of there where there are few restaurants within walking distance. Primi Piatti is a reliable restaurant with a diverse menu and not ridiculously expensive. I had a flavorful piece of rockfish over lentils - just right. And a healthy portion of ensalada mista - light on the dressing just perfect for my palate. I like because you can talk without shouting across the table."

  • "The options on the restaurant week menu were both delicious and ample (a hard combination to find). The bucatini was a slightly firm for my taste but I wouldn't say under cooked (lets call it al dente plus). All the meats at the table were cooked to a great texture and the sauces did not overpower the meats' flavors. The staff were friendly, timely, and attentive; our water was never empty and empty plates were gone within moments of being emptied. If I was planning to impress someone (a date, a client, a recruit, etc.) this would be on my short list of places to go."

  • ". no child chairs. It's a business lunch spot, but I had requested one In open table reservation When I called that day to alert a 15 minutes delay , the woman said "we got you" But at arrival the owner , who knows me, was almost upset that I was asking and said "he had never seen one in restaurant" but they were "preparing something". The waiters that know me , they set us up in a banquette in corner in back That actually worked well I was treating my 15 mos. old god daughter and her parents for DC restaurent week , who was impeccably dressed and quiet and well behaved, as always actually. We ended enjoying the meal; and waiters since they know me treated us and Baby well But the owner nice a lesson in class."

  • "I went to this restaurant on a post-Christmas date. It was very intimate and the service was great. The pasta was fresh and the food was tasty. It appeared to be authentic Italian cuisine. Also, they have a great selection of wine and daily specials."

  • "Primi Piatti had delicious food a nice wine selection and very solicitous service. We ordered the peppery balsamic soaked pear wrapped in prosciutto and served with creamy burrata cheese. Delicious! We then split two entrees: the gnocchi with duck ragout, which was very rich and flavorful, and the seafood risotto which included lobster, shrimp, scallops and calamari. Again well seasoned, cooked perfectly and very full of flavor. We finished the meal with the panna cotta and the nougat desserts. Decadent but not too rich. Portion sizes were generous and plating was well presented. The ambience was quiet and calming, and the location was great. The staff were very attentive and friendly, and we never felt rushed. Look forward to returning!"

  • "This was the first Italian restaurant that pioneered oven baked pizza. I am happy to say that their pizza still taste great, especially the gorgonzola one. I also enjoy greatly the bucatini spaghetti Roman style. Great restaurant decor also. I thought the menu price was higher than it should be but I guess operating costs in DC are not negligible. Love the place!!!"
