Diner Reviews
  • "The selection and food quality were excellent, even in the summer when it is less busy. The servers were pleasant and attentive. The atmosphere has a simple elegance (despite some patrons wearing shorts and very casual clothing)."

  • "The professional atmosphere and "business casual" setting is appreciated. The buffet is always interesting with multiple choices and an extensive salad bar. The servers seem to know everyone in the room."

  • "Asked for a table by a window for the view and least noise as am elderly guest had challenges hearing. Also picked a time when there would be few other guests. We arrived first and were placed by window. With the rest of the tables empty the next guests were seated next to us and asked that the curtains be drawn - ridiculous! Server rarely checked on us. Guests at next table were loud and should have been seated elsewhere."

  • "If you go here for brunch, be prepared to not eat anything else for the rest of the day! There is so much amazing food that you will eat until you physically can't take another bite! I would highly recommend it!"

  • "Nice variety of foods including shrimp, fried chicken with papaya, salads, hand carved roast beef and a wonderful assortment of desserts made this a good choice for our party when we did not want to wait a long time at a table after graduation at a restaurant that did not take reservations. The ballroom setting did make it seem a bit institutional/conference/cavernous rather than a smaller restaurant setting would have. Overall-a good setting for dinner on a very busy Blacksburg weekend. The live music was a nice touch-unfortunately we were seated in the hall-brighter with a window, but not accessable to music. "

  • "We were there with a group of 10 for our son's graduation from Virginia Tech. The Ball Room was set up for a buffet, which was very good. Everyone enjoyed it and has a lot to eat! The prime rib was exellent!"
    Dined on 5/16/2014
  • "Was not told beforehand that this was to be a fixed-price buffet- Not worth it and had we know it was to be a buffet we would have made a reservation elsewhere. By the time we arrived of course it was too late to make alternate plans as it was graduation week-end. "

  • "Great service! Love that it wasn't crowded so the ambiance was more private and quiet! Great way to celebrate my graduation! Loved it!"

  • "went there for Mother's Day buffet. MUCH better than the Christmas buffet! Very, very good! Highly recommend!"

  • "The food as usual was very good. Unfortunately all other categories fell short. The service was average at best with college students replacing the typical, professional staff. This alternate location was okay if you were attending a wedding or a seminar rather than a family gathering for Mother's Day! I will ask in the future if the brunch is being moved from Preston's dining area and if so, will not make reservations in the future. I was well aware that the per person cost was increased and was more than willing to pay the amount but I expected something extra for that added charge. I was surprised that each mother did not receive even a flower or a small gift! "

  • "We had dined at Preston's last year while visiting our Granddaughter at Virginia Tech, and decided to take her and her boyfriend there for dinner this year. We had a wonderful evening at the restaurant. The food was fabulous, the service was great, and we enjoyed a wonderful visit to campus...."

  • "We ate at Preston's prior to a concert at the Moss Art Center. They were offering a special for the concert and I had received an email advertising it. The concert menu included a wonderful arugula salad then a choice of 8 different main courses from Filet to Salmon to Short Ribs. We had the Filet and Short Rib which was perfectly done and with creative sides! Dessert was included as well. We were in and out in about an hour. Delicious and great wine! This will be our place before any concerts! All reasonably priced too! "

  • "Our office has dined at Preston's for Hoilday lunches as well as busienss meetings/lunches and never have we been disappointed. The food is excellent and the choices are varied. There has never been a time that the food has been below our expectations. The service at this visit was not up to its usual as we were seated by the hostess and the server took our drink order and brought our check but did not offer refills this is not the normal from our past dining experiences. Great and we will return whenever the opportunity arises."

  • "We had a 1:30 reservation. We were not seated until at least 2:15. There were plenty of open tables and food, there must not have been enough servers. They said they had a computer problem. The food was decent, but there was not much of a selection. Roasted lamb and pork both dry. Shrimp cocktail and quinoa salad both very good. Dessert seemed out of a box, not home made. Being Easter brunch they were set up in a large function room instead of the normal restaurant. I would not go again for Easter brunch."

  • "I made reservations for my family to have Easter brunch over a month ago. Most of the food items were very good and there was plenty of variety. The seating was horrible and made our experience less than enjoyable on a major family holiday. We were seated directly in front of a main access door to the kitchen, and had to endure the constant noise of wait staff going in and out of the kitchen directly in front of our table. The poor waitress told us that other guests had refused to be seated in her section as a result. The restaurant had moved all the seating to a large banquet room and made a very poor choice of placing the table we were sat. They should gone with a few less tables. This pretty much ruined our family experience."

  • "I was surprised that this very large restaurant had such a small menu and did not offer any pasta or rice. However, the wine selection and food were quite good. The high ceilings and restaurant size made conversations "carry" easily since there were not many diners - another surprise since it was a Friday evening during high school Spring Break, and the hotel was sold out."

  • "We have eaten at Preston's on a number of occasions and find the service and ambience to typically to be excellent. The food served on this occasion was very good but just slightly below what we are used to, particularly the buffet selections. We will return again."

  • "We love to enjoy Preston´s because of the excellent quality in its service and food. Although, we would appreciate a different variety of desserts, we have been enjoying this buffet since 3 years and we found almost the same desserts every time we go. Maybe we are too into sweets and we expect something different but pecan pie, apple pie, mini cheesecakes, cheese cake, a kind of hot bread and chcolate cake are constants. Wish you could change this variety and surprise us the same way as with the rest of the wonderful food. Suggestions: pastries, ice cream, chocolate truffles, lemon pie, crepes Thanks!"

  • "Preston's does not usually have many customers unless there is a conference there- so it is a good place for a quiet buffet lunch."
    Dined on 2/19/2014
  • "I e-mailed Preston's that we were celebrating my son's 21st birthday and wanted a special desert for lunch. They delivered perfectly-portioned, decadent chocolate cake slices with strawberries and a birthday greeting! The lunch service was spectacular, in spite of a busy, full restaurant. We were very pleased with the wonderful experience!"

  • "Open Table lists only this restaurant in Blacksburg. That worked fine for us for two reasons: (1) Preston's was the restaurant at the conference center/hotel where we were located -- so convenient, and (2) it's darn good food and service. There were two in our party. Over the three days there we tried several dishes: chicken thighs, steak, pork belly, mix of appetizers. All of the food was prepared well; the kitchen allowed us to substitute sides; the service was excellent; the wine list provided good choices. All in all, a solid restaurant in a college town."

  • "We really enjoyed our dinners of duck confit and crispy chicken thighs. Brad, the sommelier, did a great job picking a wine that went well with both our dishes. The chocolate bread pudding was excellent. A bit of a cross between bread pudding and warm chocolate brownie."

  • "The lunch buffet was delicious and the restaurant accommodations made a group lunch meeting easy, enjoyable, and effective. The service and people were great."
    Dined on 2/7/2014
  • "The menu is limited but offers enough variety so that everyone in our diverse group found a meal that they were happy with. The items are prepared in interesting ways. The duck confit was excellent Serving sizes are perfect. The wines offered by the glass are mediocre but drinkable. The service is very friendly and helpful. This is definitely worth going to again."

  • "I continue to enjoy dining at Preston at the Inn of Virginia Tech. So far I go there almost every Sunday except the days I am out of town. It almost becomes my "religion" every week!"

  • "This is a favorite spot to go after church when we have family in town. The price is great and the food is DELICIOUS! They always have a carving station with prime rib available AND a chocolate fountain. YUMMY!!!"

  • "We arrived 40 minutes early for a 7;00 p.m. reservation. There appeared to be (not certain) open tables but the specific table reserved for our 4 people was busy. We were seated at that specific table at about 6:50. I just wondered if we were required to wait for that one specific table, maybe not, but if we were you might consider reviewing the policy. It was a busy night and our waiter did a good job. I"m sure the kitchen was really busy The Chicken was excellent/."

  • "The hostess needs training. She kept us in a long line while she escorted diners to their seats . She should have handed diners off to a waitress for seating."

  • "This is the 2nd year in a row our family (party of 12) has celebrated Thanksgiving by dining at Preston's. The food is delicious and there is a large variety of food to try. The buffet line moves quickly and the servers are fast. I also appreciate that they have a separate table set up with food that the little children prefer (corn dogs, chicken nuggets, etc.)."
    Dined on 11/28/2013
  • "I've now been to Preston's several times for 'special day' brunches. Those where they push through a large crowd, such as Thanksgiving and Mother's Day, have only lunch items offered. For days with smaller draws, such as Christmas, the offerings include a waffle and omelette bar in addition to lunch items such as prime rib and turkey. The true brunch buffet offering both breakfast and lunch items (and a huge dessert bar) is far superior. The dates where only lunch is offered have nothing special. On a positive note, with reservations seating is quick and there are always small tables set aside with kid-friendly foods."
    Dined on 11/28/2013
  • "We had no service and had to bus our own table. Is not worth the high price to do that."
    Dined on 11/28/2013
  • "The quality and variety of choices on the lunch buffet cannot be beat. It is the best business lunch venue in town The servers are friendly and professional. They always feature a special chef's offering. Preston's is the best!"

  • "What is going on with my fellow Open Table users. We so depend on honest ratings for first time visits to our restaurants. The food was average at best, overpriced and the servers were all underclassmen with little or no professional skills yet Preston's is rated 4 star?"

  • "Had several wonderful dining experiences with out grandson who attends VT. He has a huge appetite and Preston's provided everything to satisfy his appetite. We will visit Preston's when we return."

  • "Set within the Inn at VA Tech, Preston's offers a limited menu, with only six entrees, but they are very well chosen. You can view the menu on line. Try the smoked trout appetizer with a glass of NZ Sauv. Blanc. Loved the Duck confit- really a Duck cassoulet that was tasty and hearty and paired nicely with a glass of Malbec. A piece of crispy Duck skin made for a nice treat capping the confit. The Cajun spiced Sea Scallops were perfectly cooked with a mild cajun spice that did not compete with the scallop taste. It pairs nicely with the oven roasted brussel sprouts and a delicious cornbread pudding. Too full for dessert we did have coffee, which was fresh and hot, but less inspired than the meal preceding it."
