Diner Reviews
  • ".. But based on all the recommendations I received, chose Prep Kitchen for a dinner out with friends.. And what a great choice it was! We were lucky enough to get there before 6:30pm so not only did we get the advantage of the meters ending their tolls, but we got in on the early prix-fit for $35 of appetizer, entree & dessert. The tempura beans & stuffed dates wrapped in bacon rocked. All the food choices were great, along w/ the sangria.. The chocolate dessert w/Carmel salted gelato was a great ending.. And SUPERB service. I would definitely eat here again."

  • "Prepkitchen Little Italy is a restaurant others should look up to. Aside from the apparently ever-changing menu with well-conceived dishes prepared to perfection, their level of customer service it a cut above the rest. You don't see this high level of service anymore; their attention to detail, friendliness, providing additional dishes on the house as a "welcome" dish and as an apology for the main course taking longer than they would like. Suffice it to say we were well taken care of, and left happy and impressed. Well done, Prepkitchen. Well done, indeed."

  • "Great Little Italy place if you do not want Italian. Great food and nice bar scene. A little noisy but does create a scene for fun."

  • "The farm to table food was well prepared. The steak was tender & flavorful, beet salad with avocado was excellent and bacon wrapped dates yummy. No problem finding something on the menu or cocktail list you'll enjoy The service was marginal for a place like this. The bartender was efficient but distracted talking to his regulars. While the conversation was entertaining, it wasn't professional. Forks on the table had food on them and needed to be returned. The sever forgot a drink order and then never to come check on us after the food was delivered. The hostesses were very efficient so that was a plus. Maybe we just had a bad night but I'd expect more on a Saturday @ 8 pm. It's worth a try as the food was very good."

  • "The food was good and our server was great and made some suggestions that were delicious. I was disappointed of the location of our table. What is the point of making a reservation when you receive a lousy table."

  • "Contemporary, simple and delicious food! Paired perfectly with the right type of cocktails and wine. Perfect spot for an evening with friends or a romantic outing! Love it, hope to be back soon."

  • "I come here often because the food is that good. And every once in a while I want a scotch with dinner. On more than one occasion I've had a 'friendly' talk with the bartender who metes out liquor like it's liquid gold. A normal pour should give you a satisfying amount of time to sip and savor. But these measly portions (at $18 each) are infuriating. Here's some math: Wine carries a 2x markup. But at $18, Prep Kitchen scotch carries a 4x markup. Stop insulting me."

  • "Another fabulous meal at PKLI. Starters of sushi, tartar and cheese board followed by bolognaise, short ribs and pork special. The short ribs probably my fav. Salted Carmel ice cream and gooey chocolate cake for sharing with a cheeky wee port to finish off..amazingly fabulous. Service was top notch, in my top 3 favorite places in San Diego."

  • "Great food and good service. Our server (wish I could remember her name) was so charming and helpful that we wished we could have had her dine with us. I clumsily spilled my wine and she, along with three others, literally leaped to our assistance. She even brought us a little carafe to replace the spilled portion! Nice location, we'll be back for sure."

  • "Food was very good...my husband and I shared the rare ahi appetizer special, cured meats & cheese board, caesar salad and seared ahi special for dinner and enjoyed all of it. The service was very friendly."

  • "The service, prompt and friendly. The entire family ages 17-84 loved the food. No one complained, because they were all busy savoring the appetizers. That was all our party of 8 ordered. Appetizers! We had plenty to eat sharing and tasting all their yummy appetizers. Will go and visit again soon!"

  • "Great place to celebrate college graduation and Father's Day. Intimate. Great food. The appetizers were the stars of the evening. Loved the bacon wrapped dates. The cutting board had a wonderful variety of things to nibble on and was big enough for 7 of us to share. Our waitress was really sweet and brought us a plate of beef tartare on the house. Very nice!"

  • "I made a reservation for 11:30 on a Saturday for brunch. We were seated in the main room next to the window, but it was a little cramped and noisy so we opted to sit at the bar. The staff were very accommodating and very attentive. The service was outstanding and the food was fabulous."

  • "I decided to pick this place to join a few of my girlfriends for a quick birthday happy hour and dinner at a new spot that we never been to. Let me go on record to say this was the best idea I came up with. We decided to get one of everything on the happy hour appetizer menu and we were not disappointed. Our waitress Natalie was extremely knowledgable and helpful the entire night. Letting us know how amazing the food was and made the experience more than we imagined. The pork belly appetizer was out of this world. And the patatas bravas I could eat all day everyday ! Don't lose your touch. This place is going to be around for a long time. Thank you Natalie for such great service and the food - we top our hats off to the chefs. "

  • "My girlfriend and I ate here after strolling through the Saturday Farmer's Market in Little Italy and our experience was perfect. Our server was engaging, passionate and extra friendly. I chose the Mussels and my girlfriend went with the salmon eggs benedict from the brunch menu and they were both spot-on. Our server told us about other great things to do in San Diego (we live in New Orleans) and even brought us a free brownie and ice cream desert. We spent four days and four nights in San Diego with eating and drinking as the emphasis of our trip and Prepkitchen ranks among the top of every restaurant we visited, even the much pricier ones. This place is simple yet amazing. It should definitely be on your list of places to go!"

  • "Delicious brunch, especially the sage & sausage scramble, good coffee, house made jams, wonderful service. Love the decor. Only problem is noise level/acoustics makes it a bit hard to converse. "

  • "Love that they are farm to table, everything was fresh and flavorful. However, vegetarian items are limited and not sure if the one entree was vegan or made with butter."

  • "Food was really good. I had the vegetable tagine and my husband had the pasta with uni butter. REALLY goo! The server was SO accommodating and attentive but never intrusive. Great dinner!"

  • "The overall crowd was a bit younger then we were but it never felt out of place. We had a reservation, arrived a few minutes late but we're seated right away even though the place was crowded. Waiter was very helpful, professional and never made us feel rushed. She was friendly but professional and we appreciated her attention to detail. Food was excellent. Properly prepared and nicely presented. Be sure to get reservations as it seems a very popular place."

  • "We are regulars at PrepKitchen. Last week we were surprised to be charged $16.50 for a martini!!!! This is crazy!! We dine out around downtown weekly and this is the most expensive martini and one of the smallest in San Diego. Our table ordered a couple of the short ribs and pork porterhouse. The pork was so salty I had to send it back. The waiter and manager were apologetic and offered me a different entree and complimentary dessert, which we really appreciate. I hope this is not a sign of quality of service going down hill. "

  • "The server (waitress) was friendly and very knowledgeable about the menu. When we couldn't decide between two dishes, she actually treated us to an appetizer version of the one we didn't choose so we'd know if we'd like it another time. That really impressed us! She also brought a taste of one wine to help make a decision. The bar looked like a good scene for the younger crowd, although we made an effort to sit as far from the noise of the music as possible. We were able to be far enough to easily have a conversation while eating. Definitely recommend this delightful spot."

  • "We were visiting San Diego and had learned about this hot spot. We were not disappointed. Salad, featured flatbread and roasted chicken entree were beautifully prepared and tasty. Wonderful wine recommendations as well. Highly recommend this Little Italy spot. "

  • "Like the other Prepkitchen locations and their Whisknladle partner restaurant, this restaurant treats customers right. You have a principal server, but all of them make sure you have what you need. The carage of (cucumber) water at the table is always kept fresh and glasses filled whenever someone notices. The food on this particular evening was running a little salty, but everyone finished their meal. The WNL burgers were a particular hit."

  • "Met some friends for brunch/lunch. I had the chicken caesar salad that was tasty with the right amount of punch in the dressing. My friends had the scrambles which they enjoyed. They liked being able to customize their toppings. Another had the french toast in a berry syrup which looked amazing."

  • "This was our first visit to Prepkitchen Little Italy, and the experience was almost perfect. Our meal began with two appetizers; bacon wrapped dates with chorizo and tomato sauce, and beef tartare. Both were outstanding. Our server, Mai, surprised us with a bowl of chicken soup, on the house, that would be satisfying as a meal in itself. Sadly, the main course of pan roasted yellowtail, with english peas, baby potatoes, spinach, and crispy onions, in a broth, just did not work. The potatoes were bland, the onions were out of place, and pan roasting the yellowtail is perhaps, not the best preparation for that fish. The entire staff is friendly, and our server, Mai, was terrific. Prepkitchen is worth a return visit."
