When it first opened in 2009, Prepkitchen La Jolla was the first in what would become a string of casual, farm-to-table style restaurants from the minds behind Whisknladle restaurant in La Jolla. Inspired by cooks for cooks, Prepkitchen serves artisanal, farm-to-table cuisine at an everyday-eats price at all three of its locations - La Jolla, Del Mar & in San Diego’s historic Little Italy.

Guests will enjoy a casual, intimate dining experience whether seated inside Prepkitchen’s quaint dining room or outside under a covered, candlelit patio. Prepkitchen serves lunch and dinner daily, as well as breakfast and brunch menus on the weekend, which includes happy hour priced mimosas and $1 coffee.

Very friendly staff at front & throughout restaurant. Service was very accommodating & friendly. Everyone was available & aware when we might need something. Their suggestions were great. Cheese & meat plate was a great start; all items explained very well which is nice, a few pickled items on the plate offered a nice touch. Everyone at the table of 5, took a bite from each others plates. It was all very good. My salmon was cooked to perfection with crispy skin sitting on top of a flavorful corn succotash. Beef tenderloin with leeks was another dish that stood out, again cooked to perfection. Don't miss the beef short ribs, so savory. Beer selection is just right. Staff are quite knowledgeable which is always a good thing. Nice vibe.

Food at this place is really good. The tempura green beans were awesome. There were lots of families and kids there which is really good. But because of it I would not recommend it as a romantic date spot, although it could have the potential of it.

Small place. They seated us at a table for two beside a party of 6 that thought they were in Qualcomm late in the 4th quarter of a game the Chargers had a shot at winning. So loud our waitress had to kneel down to our ear level and shout the specials at us. We decided to leave when a table farther from the rowdy self-absorbed folks opened up. Our waitress, Katie, and the staff were great in moving us to the new table. Two thoughts. First, running a restaurant is hard, hard work. Second, the yahoos at that table were the poster team for Ugly Americans. Any wonder other cultures have such contempt for us? If you need to shout, back-slap, and mock your friend's hair transplant, go to a sports bar.

The food was amazing! The nectarine & burrata salad was wonderful. However…the service was slow and inattentive (I asked three times for a napkin) and when our bill came we found we had been changed for something we did not order. When PrepKitchen opened we thought it was charming and reasonably priced; it is now on the verge of being pretentious and very expensive…what a shame.

Based on reviews was excited to try this place. Website menu was very appealing but found a very different one when we arrived to find just 2 fish option & no seafood, with lots of heavier meat choices. The waitress who was otherwise excellent, informed us that the menu was in "transition". Not quite sure what that means - but on a warm summer evening near the coast we were looking forward to some fish or seafood. With options limited to salmon steak-- not my fav, I opted for a salad with roasted beets and added shrimp for $6. It was yummy & hubby enjoyed his tagliatelle. The house sangria was nothing special. Would love to try this place again when the menu is more to our liking.

The location is nice, with a breeze and some umbrella coverage of the outside space. All staff were welcoming and helpful. The menu is fresh and the food was tasty. Occasionally we were waiting for a while, but if we flagged someone down, they were flagable and the response was immediate. The one downside was that while the tables weren't full, the kitchen seemed backed up. We got one pancake that looked perfect on the outside, but was raw inside. Getting a replacement took a while, and while the middle was perfect, the outside was overdone. So it seems the griddle was too hot. We had a lovely breakfast to finish up our trip to San Diego.

We are from out of town and with Father's Day and graduation weekend we wanted to find somewhere that took reservations for brunch. The food was good. We don't usually eat very big meals but the portions were not very big and the fruit bowl I thought we could share was very small. The food had good flavor.

Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu and helped my mom and I pick our entrees that were veg friendly. My dad and uncle got the WNL burger and absolutely loved it. Pleases both veg and omnis. Wish the beer list was a little more robust, only 750mL bottles for some of the less hoppy/IPA styles. But the place is small so I don't expect them to carry a huge variety.

When we walked over the restaurant, I thought we were at some outdoor sandwich shop. It was definitely a surprise to find the food very tasty and all home grown or organic. This is a beer and wine restaurant but they have great choices. I would go back again. Their Beet Salad was delicious and so was the roasted Chicken.

Perfection from beginning to end! We visited for Mothers Day dinner and my mom couldn't have been happier. Prep Kitchen is one of my favorite restaurants in San Diego and it didn't disappoint. I decided to make the reservations for 5:15pm so we were able to enjoy their happy hour that included $5 sangria and tapas. By doing so our dinner felt more like a multi course meal. It was so enjoyable to sit on their new deck patio and fully enjoy the sunny San Diego day. The service was amazing as always and I can not wait to return for lunch, brunch, dinner tapas & wine or any reason at all. Thanks PKLJ!

Prep kitchen just expanded their patio seating. I was in tshirt and shorts, but didnt find it cold at all due to the heat lamps. Food was great, their menu changes/rotates from time to time. Got the mussels, pork belly, and short ribs and were good portions for two people to share. Mussels came with this sweet sauce/soup mixure that didnt make the mussels taste salty at all. Short ribs were easy to cut into. Pork belly had crispy skin on the outside but nice chewy texture on the inside. Cant decide on my favorite dish.

We visited Torrey Pines from North Carolina on business and were delighted to find this outstanding locals' spot for dinner with my daughter and her boyfriend. Although we had reservations for 7:15, we were not seated until 7:45, after checking in 15 minutes early. The restaurant is small, but very intimate and perfect for date-nite or a private dinner. The farm to table food was absolutely excellent, the servers were highly attentive, the ambiance was very sweet and quaint. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience and would highly recommend Prepkitchen to visitors. Sorry locals, but this one will be hard for you to keep a secret.

Loved PrepKitchen! My parents are in town this weekend and it's hard to find restaurants for everyone because my mom and I love everything, but my dad can't eat any sugar or dairy and he doesn't like seafood. Came to PrepKitchen and everyone absolutely loved everything they had. We had a pitcher of sangria, the artichokes and mussels for appetizers, the WNL burger and a couple Mary's Chickens. I would recommend everything we had. It was all very delicious. Our server was also very knowledgeable and super friendly. All of it made for one of the best dining experiences my parents had while there were here in San Diego.

Prepkitchen was an relaxed spot to have my 30th Birthday dinner date with my boyfriend. We requested a table on their outdoor, covered patio, which was excellent. The tables are a bit close together because they are a pretty popular spot, but we didn't mind. I believe our server's name was Mathias & he was AWESOME! Get the Shrimp Salpicon as an appetizer - good for 2 to share. I also had them do a 1/2 Caeser salad to start, which had amazing dressing too. We fought over who had the better dish - Porter Braised Short Rib or Taglitelle Bolognese - the chefs really know what they're doing!! Great wine list too! And you HAVE to get the Warm Chocolate Budino for dessert. All around a new favorite!

So, Prepkitchen isn't a bad place to eat. It's a bit tiny, and in a weird location, but it's cute and adorable. Their brunch is -amazing-. Probably the best French Toast I've had in my life. The desserts are always tasty as well. The problem I have with Prepkitchen is their entrees. They aren't ever bad, but for the pricing of the menu, I never feel like I get my money's worth. Their burger, which by all accounts is a great burger, is not however an $18 burger. And I feel like that the several times I've gone there for a meal. This feeling that, it's good, but the pricing is off from what I seem to be eating. At least for lunch/dinner. Sadly, I'll probably be going elsewhere if it's not for brunch.

I took my girlfriend here for her birthday dinner. As dined at Whiskenladel before, I was expecting the same vibrant flavors that the owners of the restaurants provide. And I was not disappointed with the quality of the food served. The flavors were fresh and delicious. The only negatives included the limited bar menu with serving only beer or wine, no cocktails. In addition, the seating was a bit crammed as we sat outside on the patio. The server was very nice; however she seem to be a distraction in my conversation with my girlfriend. I would come here again for a lunch and beer spot, but not for a special dinner experience like I was hoping.
