Diner Reviews
  • "Such a warm, romantic setting with an incredible view of the Sandias. Try to get there for a stunning sunset view. The service and staff are outstanding, knowledgable of the wine list and so professional (but friendly). Prairie Star is one of our very favorite restaurants."

  • "Restaurant had been up and down over the years, but my brother and our wives all agreed that this visit was one of the best in recent memory. Great food and a very comfortable dining venue. Hope that this is an indication of things to come!"

  • "A favorite and our usual choice for special occasions. Always excellent wine recommendations from a very knowledgeable sommelier who knows and remembers our tastes."

  • "one of the best preparations of salmon, trout, and chicken we ever experienced"

  • "This is one of our favorite places to dine but it didn't measure up to our visits in the past. We invited visitors from Florida who had fond memories of Prairie Star when they lived here. Unfortunately, all but one of the dishes were sub par - two of the steaks were badly overcooked. While both the manager and server were very helpful and apologetic, our dining experience was ruined as the others had to wait while our food was redone."

  • "This is our favorite restaurant! and for the first time we were very disappointed in the service and food. The food was luke warm, the reduction was congealed and the waitstaff was slow, forgetful and not what we were accustomed to. We will go back because we love this place and hopefully we will have one of our favorite servers next time."

  • "service was very slow, didn't have dessert ordered so waiter said he would give a glass of port, never received the port but was billed for the dessert"
    Dined on 3/29/2014
  • "Food was good, but dinner for two took over 2 hours, which was way too long. Staff may have been busy? The view/ambiance makes this restaurant. Get dinner at sunset. More restaurants are expanding their gluten free menu, but this restaurant hasn't picked up on this yet. Still, I think they would work with someone."

  • "Good selection on the menu and the food was really good and well displayed on the plate. The salmon was done just right - not dry at all. Great selection of wines with descriptions to aid in choice. Service was excellent and timed perfectly - we didn't have to rush eating at all. Water glasses kept filled without having to request more water. Always a great place to go as the atmosphere is so peaceful and the view is great. Will definitely go back again and have also invited friends to try it out."

  • "We watched the sunset hit the cliffs on the mountains and turn them bright pink, as we savored our wonderful wine. The food was excellent, as always and the ambiance can't be beat for a romantic dinner."

  • "Prairie Star has always been a wonderful place to dine and if you have a coupon it greatly helps. The menu could be bit more varied as could the salad selections and the dining room tends to get noisy as more of the tables fill up."

  • "As always, food was great. They have a great chef!"

  • "The Prairie Star is far and away my favorite restaurant in NM. It is set on an incredible scenic setting with views of the golf course, Rio Grande Valley and Sandia Mountains. The building and decor is very New Mexican and the food is outstanding and the staff is very polite and helpful and the overall feel is very relaxing."

  • "I was not impressed with 2 scallops for $39.00. My granddaughter had a small pizza and the sauce was very spicy for her. Also not much cheese on the pizza. Not kid friendly (no menu for children). My daughter's sirloin was just ok. The desert was good. I guess, that for the money I spent, we could have gone to any number of other restaurants with better tastes, ambiance, and a lot less cost. The one sweet wine I ordered you were out of. Did not have a very happy experience except for our family and friends socializing for the evening."

  • "We hadn't been here in a few years because of distance etc. but we will be back soon. It was always good but this visit was outstanding in all areas and probably the best fine dining experience in the greater Albuquerque area. I think fine dining establishments are few and far between in ABQ anymore. They used to be plentiful but with the loss of places like Cristobal's and the like this isn't the case anymore. The whole package was outstanding and our waiter Samuel only made it better."

  • "Our Server was very, very, very, quiet and at times he DID NOT announce himself to the table and startled us. He also did NOT offer 'specials' until we asked him. This was NOT a comfortable evening with our guests having him be our Server. It was quite intimidating...... I forgot his name though."

  • "This restaurant is a gem, unfortunately it is a 45 minute to an hour drive from the city. The wine list was extensive and fit everyone's palate. The menu was small however everything was impeccable. The servers were calm and attentive and we did not feel rushed to a table. It was nice to enjoy the bar area with the fireplace. Unfortunately the reservation was a little too late to see the view of the mountains."

  • "Both the food and the atmosphere are pretty bland. Service that night seemed confused and not sure who was doing what. Not professional"

  • "We like to go to Prairie Star for special occasions. We make a reservation and go early to get a table next to the window so we can look out over the golf course and the Sandia's. They have a nice wine list and the food is always excellent. The portions are not big but that leaves room for dessert! My husband & I got the "catch of the day" which was a large sea scallop and piece of ono. It was so good and flavorful. I got creme brulee for dessert and it was the best I've ever tasted. The service was good. Our waiter was attentive but not annoyingly so. Plan on spending some time there when you go, it is not a place for a quick meal."

  • "Prairie star has become one of our favorite spots. Excellent food, service and ambiance. I had the portobello mushroom ravioli. It was delicious! My husband had the elk medallions. Done to perfection and very tender. Add a bottle of wine & a great view and you have a wonderful evening."

  • "Gracious, elegant yet unpretentious, spectacular vistas, and four-star or better food, what else could a jaded foodie want? The attentive and unobtrusive staff highlighted the specials, brought water and an assortment of beads accompanied with a slightly tart raspberry puree and butter. We nibbled while considering the well conceived menu. My top sirloin was tender, juicy and and prepared precisely as requested. It sat upon a polenta cake and was surrounded by grilled asparagus -- a wonderful presentation. My partner had grilled salmon and praised it lavishly. The vanilla bean creme brulee was perfect: a compelling contrast of velvety smooth custard and caramelized burnt sugar topping. Dinner for was $105. Money well spent."

  • "Great ambiance and a good menu for Valentines Dinner. Perfect setting for special occasions with great views and a quite, romantic environment. The Sea Bass on the menu was cooked perfectly, but the desert was OK considering the price of the meal. The service was above average, especially for such a busy night and was consistent from start to finish!"

  • "I was told that they do not accept the Entertainment Card on Saturday nights????? They said they tried to call me regarding my notation that I would have the card....the day of the reservation. Very lame. Our table was not ready when we got there and a couple ahead of us left in a huff after they were told 4 times that their table was almost ready. We, of course, got their table, so it was good for us. After we were seated, we saw that 3/4 of the tables in that room were empty, so I don't know what their process is??? Prairie Star is notorious for their good food and bad service, so I was aware of that going in. The view of the mountains and the golf course from the restaurant are spectacular. So that doesn't change. Food WAS good."

  • "Our dining experience seemed a bit rushed since it was Valentine's Day and the restaurant was extremely busy. My sea bass was overcooked and the saffron sauce was underwhelming. My husband's tenderloiin was perfectly cooked and melt-in-your-mouth tender. The first course and salad were terrilfic but the red velvet cake was dry and lifeless. We've dined at Prairie Star on other nights when they weren't so busy and have always had an excellent meal. I think they were'nt quiet up for the volume of guests that night."

  • "I made my reservations on line and requested our favorite server. Even though she actually doesn't work there anymore, they had called her in to work as they needed extra help for Valentines weekend. Staff is always very professional and the atmosphere is romantic. I ordered the duck plate and was very disappointed. It was not at all what I expected it to be. The duck was very fatty and tough and was a small portion served on top of macaroni with a sauce and asparagus mixed in. I would not recommend this dish to anyone. I sent mine back and ordered the salmon and it was superb. Our server was quick to fix the problem and management stopped by our table to apologize as well. We highly recommend this fine dining restaurant."

  • "We've gone to Prairie Star for years and have never been disappointed. It's an upscale restaurant with incredible soups, sauces and entrees. Pricey, but we've had Valentiine's Day dinners there for over 20 years now and always pick this restaurant for our special occasions."

  • "My husband and I really enjoyed our experience at Prairie Star. He started with winter squash bisque and I had the golden beet salad. Both excellent. He had the elk medallions for main course and I had scallops. Both very good but his portion on elk was very small, particularly for the price. In contrast my scallop portion was huge. Finished with pineapple tamale, which was delicious. The atmosphere was great. Romantic and wonderful view. Our waiter was great. When he realized he forgot to bring us our second glass of wine, he apologized and then brought them to us on the house. We will definitely be returning."

  • "I dined here many years ago and the experience the last few times was less than acceptable so I never went back. I started to hear good things about th place again so decided to give it a try. So glad I did. The servers are true professionals. the meal was prepared exactly as ordered and came out quickly. Extensive wine list including one just for single glasses. we had the Filet and the sirloin both were cut with a fork perfect. It was quiet, the prices were right, not too expensive. We'll definitely go back."
