Diner Reviews
  • "Chief can't be beat. Always amazing flavors! Wonderful view and atmosphere. Staff couldn't be more gracious or helpful."

  • "Overall we had a nice dining experience for our anniversary. The ambiance was top-notch. Service was very friendly albeit a little on the slow side. The food overall was fair. I ordered a sirloin that had a taste I did not like and sent it back. The waiter was nice enough to take it off my bill without my asking. The mushroom soup and salad before the meal was not great, and I would not order either again. Overall, we love coming here because of the atmosphere and will be back again sometime in the future, but the food has taken a turn for the worse."

  • "Prairie Star is one of our favorite restaurants. Service is impeccable and the food is outstanding...always. Our meal was absolutely delicious."

  • "Prairie Star Restaurant is highly recommendable for dining experience. The Star also provided excellent ambience as well as a comfortable atmosphere in both the lounge and dining room. The appetizer, entree and dessert were exemplary as was the service. Hope to return very soon."

  • "Dined there for our 40th wedding anniversary. Great seating, great food, fun wait-staff. An overall joy. They made a special night better."

  • "We opted to sit in the bar since the dining room isn't anything special and so we would be the only patrons. Service was good (had to be, once again we were the only customers). Food was okay. $29 for 3 scallops and a half a cup of rice won't bring me back. My husband ordered a burger, no pink. There was definitely some pink but he said it was pretty good nonetheless. Like the title, dinner was just okay...."

  • "Picked this place for a 32 year anniversary dinner and drove an hr from where we live to go there. Dinner portions are small and pathetic. It's all about presentation at this place, not quality or quantity. Yes everything looked real pretty but looked way better than it tasted. 4 scallops on a bed of rice with some greens and green sauce that tasted like I was eating my fresh cut lawn. My wife's filet was sized for a child. More like a medallion than a filet. Spent $149 (including tip) and left hungry and disappointed. The two entre's, 2 salads, 2 margaritas, one beer and desert is what we paid $149 for. Won't ever be back and won't refer to anyone I like."

  • "Once they had figured out who was serving the table we had a great time. Good food and friendly service!"

  • "Problems with service. The waitress did not write down our orders and there were several mistakes. She brought us utensils for the soup appetizer when we ordered calamari. Our entrées were cross served. The most serious was the steak I ordered medium rare came medium well done. It was a good piece of meat for the price, but it wasn't cooked to order. Service has slipped since our previous visits. Orders should be written down. It needs work."

  • "This was the third time we've celebrated our anniversary at Prairie Star and this was one of the more impressive times. The food was excellent - the elk medallions were outstanding and the lamb enchiladas were exceptionally flavorful. The breads were also addictive. A table-for-two at the window is the way to go if you want to enjoy the view the most. From what we could tell, there were at least three couples celebrating anniversaries the same evening."

  • "The setting is very nice. The service was spectacular. Our server was very attentive and gracious, as was another gentlemen - perhaps the manager. Most of the food was very good - we had the brie appetizer and the beet salad. Both were great. We shared the salmon and it was ok - not great. A bit salty. Was cooked well though. All in all, we would definitely go back."

  • "Prairie Star Restaurant is our favorite restaurant. We are long time residents in Albuquerque and have known the history of the Brooks home and the transformation into our favorite place. While we do not dine out frequently Prairie Star is our place of choice. I think the only time we did not celebrate our anniversary in the past 13 years was when our anniversary fell on a Monday when you were closed. Our favorite server is Dennis. He is an accomplished server and we ask to be at his station especially on our anniversary. We had a lovely time, the food was outstanding and the service was impeccable."

  • "Just dined with my daughter and boyfriend hoping for a good outdoor dining view of the Sandia Mountains at sunset. It was a perfect evening accompanied by a very nice live music group. Humming birds galore! Each of us enjoyed our meal including a shared a bottle of wine. The menu includes something for everyone. I especially enjoy ordering from the chef's favorites section."
    Dined on 7/18/2014
  • "Start out on the patio with a view of the Sandia Mountains accompanied by hummingbirds. The appetizers are good and the margueritas excellent. Then go inside for dinner as the sun sets on the Sandias. Dinner will be remarkable. Be sure to order wine and don't forget the dessert."

  • "We were a party of four. It had been a number of years since we had dined at the restaurant -- it is a 45-minute drive from where we live. However, the Wednesday night 3-course dinner intrigued us and, oh, we were so pleased. The food was to perfection, the wait staff was attentive but not interferring, and the views overlooking the golf course toward the Sandias were spectacular. A lovely evening and well worth the drive."

  • "We had dinner on a Wednesday with another couple. We all thought our food was good and well prepared. My husband and our friend had steak and remarked it was delicious, I had the quinoa squash and my friend had chicken. We were all happy, the location is great, the view can't be beaten."

  • "This was our first visit to Prairie Star and now we understand the mixed reviews. The ambiance was great with beautiful views. Our server was nice, but seldom seen. The waiter working the other half of the room was very attentive. The food, however, was inconsistent. We love brie, but their appetizer was odd-the cinnamon was overwhelming. Soups and salads were OK. The filet ordered medium rare came out well done-it shouldn't have made it to the table. The new filet when it arrived after everyone else was done was very good but the rice pairing was bland. The lamb enchiladas were great. The New Mexican ice cream dessert was really good and the chocolate cherry dessert was outstanding-we'll go back to sit on the patio and just eat that."

  • "Prairie Star is the choice for our anniversary dinner and we always come away delighted. The food was excellent, my filet was truly rare and butter knife tender. My husband had Ono and it was better than what he had in Hawaii two weeks earlier. We were seated by the window and the view is breathtaking. Although the dining room was full it was quiet and intimate. Our waiter was informative and personable and just seemed to be there every time we needed anything. It is expensive but so enjoyable and so worth it. Oh, and the little chocolates that come with the bill . . . I could eat a dozen of those babies."
    Dined on 7/10/2014
  • "I was hoping for a little less activity in the dining room: babies, a large party, two anniversary celebrations. The service was really good, so that made up for it, and we really enjoyed the food. I recommend the lamb "enchiladas" -- delicious!"

  • "Two of us had eaten here quite a few years ago and felt the quality had declined, so we were delighted to experience a meal that was excellent for everyone. Two of us had the catch of the day, wild-caught salmon, and it was served precisely as requested, cooked just enough not to be raw inside. Another had the sea scallops with watercress puree, which were exquisite, and the fourth had the Niman ranch sirloin and pronounced it excellent. Portions were ample but not excessive. My husband pronounced his martini, an important indicator for him, perfect. We will be back soon."

  • "Not your everyday, fried food restaurant. Special foods, wines, and waitstaff."
    Dined on 6/13/2014
  • "I always forget how good Prairie Star is. The menu has a relatively modest set of choices that doesn't change a lot, and no one dish seems to stand out above the others. But everything there is done amazingly well. Steak and grilled asparagus were fantastic, and I don't even like asparagus! It's not particularly cheap ($130 for 4 of us), but definitely worth the trip whenever possible. I don't understand why this place isn't always packed to the gills--it must the the slightly out-of-the-way location. Since Casa Vieja closed, I'd have to give this restaurant the nod as the best place to eat in the Albuquerque area, at least anywhere north of Vernon's. We will happily be back."

  • "Our party of six generally fared well, but one entree was incorrect requiring a short wait for the correct meal to appear, and the Tuna entree was fairly tasteless and tough for Ahi grade tuna. The other entrees were all very good."

  • " Only way to describe the food and atmosphere enchanting!"

  • "This was our "go to" celebration restaurant when we lived here the first time (1981-92). Since we've returned we find that this is still an excellent choice for a celebration. The food is aways excellent, service good, great view, good wine--what else could you want? I gave it only 4 stars because there are a couple of other restaurants in town now where the food is a little better, but I don't think anyone would be disappointed in selecting this restaurant. There is also a lovely patio overlooking the golf course with a view of the Sandias that is a wonderful spot for pre dinner drinks if the weather cooperates."

  • "We came a bit early for our reservation and were seated immediately at a cozy table by the window. The view was great. Watched hummingbirds flit about the three feeders and a pair of Canadian geese escorting their 2 young over the grounds. The meal was exceptional. The sirloin steak benedict was exquisite; melted in your mouth like a fine piece of tenderloin. The trout was light, flaky, and tastefully seasoned. The price for appetizer, salad, entree and dessert was more than reasonable on the prix fix menu. There was not a bite taken that wasn't top-notch. Kudos to the Chef and the very highest compliments to the wait staff. We just loved it and will always return. "

  • "Prairie Star is one of our favorite restaurants. This Mother's Day Brunch was no exception with great food and great service. "
    Dined on 5/11/2014
  • "It's always a pleasure dining at Prairie Star. Saturday night before Mother's Day was especially good with the best prepared trout I've ever had. Enjoyed delicious brussels sprouts on the side, and there was no problem with my request to substitute sauteed spinach for potatoes. The signature romaine salad is always the perfect starter. With the stunning view of the Sandia Mountains reflecting sunset and great cuisine, Prairie Star is a wonderful place to dine for dinner. "

  • "The view of the Sandias was outstanding. The wine list was interesting with a lot of good choices for ordering by the glass. The special I had was something from a cafeteria with breades and fried trout. The grilled chicken was a better choice. The waiter was inattentive and did not clean the table while we were deciding on desert. We may try again but not for a while . "

  • "Wouldn't have gone to Prairie Star had I not wanted to hear the band playing on the patio. And I won't go back without some similar incentive. Nothing special to report in the food I had. The first glass of wine was on the verge of turning. But there is a picture postcard view of the Sandia Mountains looking across the golf course and the bosque."
    Dined on 5/9/2014
  • "The view provides a great backdrop for a romantic dinner or birthday celebration in a quiet atmosphere. Also a special place to visit with friends and entertain out of town guests while enjoying a special dinner."

  • "Started with the foie gras french toast which was very good. Mummy had the NM Lamb "Enchiladas". The were also quite good. Lamb confit cooked in red chile. All the flavors blended well you could still tell you were eating lamb. Instead of a corn tortilla, the lamb was stacked between two crepes. I had a wagyu burger. Could have used a bit more maytag blue cheese, but the burger was cooked to a medium-rare perfection. Juicy and nicely seared on the outside. Dessert was the turtle cheesecake as Mum loves caramel. She also had a glass of Malbec which she enjoyed as recommended by our waiter. Nice view of the mountains in the early evening. Quite a few humming birds playing/eating/squabbling near the feeder on the patio. We dined inside. "

  • "The potato leek soup was too thick, not enough leek taste, and not hot enough but the entree was presented well and very tasty. Personally, I prefer whole wheat bread and rolls and never tough the white bread in the basket."

  • "The Prairie Star is simple, elegant and scenic. It is unpretentious and naturally beautiful. The food is elegant and tasty. We no longer live in New Mexico, but my wife and I always eagerly look forward to dining at the Prairie Star during our return trips there. "
