Diner Reviews
  • "Everything was delicious, but the table was in the middle of the noisy, noisy room and it dampened the enjoyment of the evening"

  • "Prairie Grass is unique in that it appeals to virtually every diner. The food is perfectly prepared. The menu can please both vegans and carnivores. Most everything is "the best you have ever had", as my crispy duck was the best I've ever eaten and my Amish blue cheese salad was the best salad I can remember. The bar builds a righteous Dark and Stormy. The wine list is filled with good values. And all this from a place that is genuinely kid friendly. There is no other place like Prairie Grass Cafe."

  • "We never go wrong for lunch or dinner here. The regular menu is full of attractive offerings and there are always a couple of specials to perk it up. We long for old favorites, corn fritters especially. We often order the pate with apples and prunes and have even ordered it to take home for our guests. Some soups are sensation. For very good day-in day-out lunch fare, a great place, a nice mix of families and business people. The service is invariably quick and friendly."

  • "The menu had a wide range of choices and we were both pleased with our choices. The service was excellent, but the noise level at mide-day made conversation for this "older" couple impossible."

  • "Everything was very good; except the noise level....really hard to have a good conversation with friends unless you are sitting in the back area and hope you are not near a large group."

  • "We always enjoy dinning here as the food is very delicious. The wait staff is very efficent and pleasant. Definitely will return in the near Future..."

  • "Open, nice decor, feeling of connection to outside and nature adds to the comfortable environs of the restaurant. Had brunch with son, his wife and family and it is a great place for that. Nice variety of quality food, unique choices and all well prepared. Love their ancho sausage."

  • "Prairie Grass has become a favorite restaurant for my family and friends. The menu is varied and always delicious, and the service is impeccable. We've been there for brunch, lunch, and dinner and been disappointed."

  • "Ordered fllat bread special which came with a hair on it! Filet ordered Medium came very rare, remade a new one and it came rare second time and the third one was the second filet cooked medium well. Manager came over after second was delivered only to tell us that it looked fine in the kitchen and could be the lighting? Overcooked it back in the kitchen for the third delivery. Biggest surprise was the attitude of the Manager. Didn't seem to really care if we were satisfied and when the bill came - took off the price of the 2 deserts but left the price of the filet and flatbread on it. When we questioned the waitress about this she went back to him and he took the price of the filet off. We watched him roll his eyes in disgust!"

  • "We were there during the week. My friend had the burger which she said was very good. As I have before, I had the crab cake appetizer which were not only different than they had been previously but they lacked flavor- even the sauce which was supposed to be an aioli had little flavor. Other than sandwiches, the prices for the main courses are high."

  • "From the moment you enter, you know this will be a great experience. You are warmly greeted, and escorted to the best available table in the house. Every salad is interesting and fresh--check out the salad specials. The cocktails are definitely worth a try--I had a variation of a Manhattan. The lamb sausage and phyllo strudel were delicious. I try to dine here every 2-3 months and I always have a great experience."

  • "We always enjoy Prairie Grass. Unfortunately, they are not serving their special brussel sprouts all summer. WHAT? If I can grwo them in my garden, I do not know why they cannot have them on the menu. Otherwise, great restaurant, consistently good food and service. "

  • "The noise level was intolerable. When speaking with the manager, he offered nothing, not even an apology. We told him we would not be returning do to the discomfort we experienced. He basically said, too bad! At the table next to us, a couple picked up and left after about 5 minutes. When a new party of three women were seated, they immediately asked to have their seats changed. The noise bounced off the walls and ceiling. We could not talk with y The couple across the small table from us without screaming. We left with headaches"

  • "the waitress was overwhelmed by too many tables i asked for no garlic on my fish. if she had take 1 minute to talk to me about what i would like , maybe fresh, thyme, lemon, salt ,pepper, olive oil, it would have tasted like something. i find it difficult to believe that a chef can only use pesto or garlic and nothing else. Needless to say the halibut was dry and tasteless and went home to my dog. the restaurant can do it, if the staff takes a minute to listen to the guest. i was disappointing as i know you can make a good meal."

  • "Tucked away in an office building it has all the elegance of a self standing fine restaurant and it is! The food and the choices and the ambiance are all lovely. We had a terrific meal and even when it got busy it was quiet enough to hear our dinner companions. Nice job!"

  • "Two for one on Wednesdays! Burger with blue cheese is so tasty and delicious. No bun, grilled tomato and onion plus potato wedges. What could be better."

  • "Second time here, same reaction. Limited menu and wine list, standard choices, nothing to get excited about. My wife did really like her flank steak but my boneless chicken disappointed. Still wondering why so many love the place. Service was excellent which saved the evening. Sorry."

  • "Always a good meal at Prairie Grass. Their hamburgers are large and delicious and quite filling. Many other choices on the menu offer a wide variety of comfort foods. Service is excellent and the ambiance very nice."

  • "We had 7 people celebrating a late Mother's Day this past Sunday. The food and service were excellent. They must have filled our water glasses 10 times, which is a small thing, but was appreciated. "

  • "Prairie Grass is a real gem of the North Shore. Tucked away on the east side of Skokie Blvd (between Dundee and Lake Cook Road), it's got a great breakfast/lunch menu with more than just the original fare. We had poached eggs on top of crusted portabello mushrooms, sauteed whitefish, salmon crepes, and a lovely salad (with apples and walnuts), all equally delicious. I highly recommend this restaurant!"

  • "I was with a party of 7 and the service was excellent. I read the reviews and was concerned about our dining selection but after being there, no one should be concerned. Consider this restaurant in your options. "

  • "Very briefly, the crowd is decidedly middle aged, the food is good to excellent, the atmosphere is vibrant but the service is very lacking. The waiters, did not see any waitresses were pleasant enough but seem to operate at their own speed. We went in and ordered and appetizer, 2 drinks and a main course and it took over 40 minutes to get our main course served after we ordered it, overall we were there slightly over 2 hours. That said everyone is very nice and the food is very good so I will give the place another try."

  • "Lunch was ok. Burger was cooked as specified and it was pretty good. Service was slow. Took a long time to get drinks, place order, get check. He apologized because it was so slow. Took an enormous time to get the bill picked up --- and really most people had left by that time. I have been here numerous times and it is always just mediocre. "

  • "Good food, well prepared. The only downer was the table we were seated at. Just my wife and I were seated at a rather large, cavernous feeling table in the rear corner of the room. I would make a point of requesting another table, even if it meant a short wait next time. Service was friendly and professional. "

  • "We took out of town family members who absolutely raved about their meals. The telapia and creamed spinach is wonderful. So is the whitefish. The strip steak was also wonderful. The duck too. "

  • "Met up with 3 friends for lunch and had an excellent experience. Pasta, tuna sandwich, fish & chips and salad were all fantastic. The only negative is the noise level. All of us have fine hearing but at the peak of the lunch hour you truly cannot hear normal conversation at your table. All the hard surfaces just reflect the noise of all the conversations going on in the restaurant. It's very distracting and could be easily reduced with some soft wall hangings, area rugs or acoustic treatment on the ceiling. It's not a problem at dinner, maybe less "business" being conducted? Server was busy and we had 3 different people bring food to the table, which necessitated them asking who had what..."

  • "Met a friend for dinner here. I was surprised by the inside because the restaraunt is in an office park. It was very pleasant. The food was outstanding. Had tuna and halibut and it was delicious. Ordered a Cosmo and it wasn't great but they had a decent wine list. Service was good. Will definitley return. "

  • "We had a wonderful experience at Prairie Grass! The service was great and so was the food! We started with the vegetarian spring rolls. They were very interesting and tasty. Our table orderd some salads and soup. Next we ordered our main courses. A few of us ordered whitefish.... prepared wonderfully and delicious. Someone ordered the crispy chicken which was great too!! We tried many desserts including a delicious chocolate cake, mango ice cream, some sort of carmel pie all yummy!! What a wonderful evening!!"

  • "Prairie Grass is my go to restaurant and there is a reason. The food is consistently excellent, the service is always good, and there aren't that many excellent choices on the North Shore. I have eaten here for lunch, brunch and dinner, and the menu is outstanding for all meals."
