  • "If you have nothing on the menu but the truffle frites you've done what needed to be done!! I have never in my 33 years had frites this good!! Think crunchy, truffle goodness with just the right amoung of seasoning. The rest of the menu is pretty good as well. I usually only get the tuna nicoise salad because by the time I've looked at the menu I've stuffed my face with the frites but it is also one of the best nucoise salads I've had. When the weahter is nice this place is great for outside dinner and drinks. When you're in town please check this place out, you will not be disapointed!!"

  • "During our week long visit we made a regular thing of visiting Poste for dinner and breakfast. We loved the food and the friendly staff. The onion soup burger was amazing. The Brussel Sprouts and asparagus were fantastic side dishes. Breakfast has a nice selection and was cooked perfectly. The staff are friendly and helpful. The only negative issue was having a menu without prices handed to the female at the table. That is a bit old fashion and a little pretentious. Offensive to our female dinning companion."

  • "Poste is consistent with the DC dining experience -- you tend to find really good restaurants in hotels. It has great atmosphere, great staff all the way and they were extremely accommodating to a family with a six year old boy and a six month old girl. My only real qualm, if you can call it that, is the menu could have more depth. Washington restaurants are all trying to compete for the title of "Most Avant Garde Menu". You can take that a bit too far -- it's the old trees for the forest problem. They make very interesting dishes, some would say overly complicated, and then leave non-foodies to steak. They could do a simply grilled section for people, like my wife, who has food allergies. Still, it's a great place."

  • "The food was good, the service was so poor, it wiped out the fun of eating out. Waited 9 minutes for the server to come and bring water. We ordered iced tea and had to wait several minutes after it arrived for sweetener. No salt and pepper on the table, no server in sight, so we swiped them from an unoccupied table. They ran out of iced tea mid-meal and we waited a long time for more. They cleared my knife with the empty salad plate and neglected to bring another knife for me to use with my dinner. So I had to wait for a knife, while my food cooled off. No one eats out to be annoyed and aggravated; Poste managed to do both in the space of one badly served dinner."

  • "Terrible service. We asked for coffee and it never came but showed up on our bill. We were seated for 15-20 minutes before our server came to the table. We had to flag our server down and ask her to take our order! Food was fine but not worth the price or the amount of time we had to wait for it. Definitely never going back!"

  • "It was great. Service was quite slow at the start. We were STARVING. That was bad, but it came together quickly. The Bloody Mary bar was fun and tasty. When I made the reservation, I said we'd arrive in running gear & messy. When she called to confirm she said we could wear whatever we want and they'd take care of us. That was a great touch. We so appreciated feeling comfortable."

  • "First visit for 3 out of the 4 of our girls night out. Special salmon and black bass and mussels. All dishes fabulous. But, when we ordered more of the wine we had at the bar, we were told it was available but not chilled. Never heard that before! So, we asked our water to please put it on ice at our table. After we ate, we went back to the restaurant and ordered the same wine. Still no bottles were chilled! The bartender tried to upsell us to a white wine double the price! We balked and decided to go to another bar. But GM (sorry! Can't remember his name, but he started a year ago around cherry blossom time) stopped us at the door and soothed things over, but, visit marred."

  • "We were disappointed to find our table cancelled for being 10 minutes late at peak hour traffic time. That too without apology. However our waitress was very attentive and professional. She was the best thing about our experience as the food was mediocre at best - even though we ordered the plat du jour. It was cold and the vegetables burned. All in all a very disappointing experience which we are not likely to repeat. We are in Washington on a diplomatic posting and have been to the bar often before and after events in the area and always enjoyed ourselves. The meal did not live up to our previous experience at all."

  • "We stayed at The Hotel Monaco and wanted to take advantage of having such a highly recommended restaurant in our lobby. The atmosphere is contemporary with grays, wood, private seating, nice bar. The selection includes escargot, duck, offal, burgers, etc. We opted for the vole of mushrooms, escargot, an apple & parsnip soup to start. Each was well balanced and attractively presented. The entree was a pork chop, which to our taste was a bit overdone. A minor detail but noticeable when all else was nearly perfect. Service was professional and non-obtrusive. Drinks were mixed by a bartender with an experienced hand. Recommend."

The black bass was perfectly prepared at the peak temperature for its texture, with just a touch of light seasoning that brought out the flavor exquisitely. My wife had a skirt steak that also was just right, served with a mountain of some of the best fried potatoes ever. And the service could not have been better. And it's in DC! Who knew?"

The wait staff obviously was directed to diners known to the restaurant. From our experience, it appeared that If you are not known or a favorite of the restaurant you will wait and be made to feel more like an interloper than a welcomed guest. The food was good."

  • "Second time here, made reservation day of easily. Called and asked about corking fee (wanted to bring my own Burgundian wine) and they said it was $25, but when I got there the waiter said there was no corking fee. So good news for me. I had the oysters for an appetizer, not bad, but you can do better in the area. For the main course two of us had the Beef Burgundy, their signature dish. Meat melted in your mouth and was done to perfection with a great sauce. My only complaint were the onions, I'm not a fan of them in general, but they were a little under cooked for my taste. The third person had the steak and frites and loved it, I tried the steak agreed. Nice pink color to a middle rare - well seasoned and nice and tender. I'd go back."

  • "Our server took "inattentive" to a new level. We had to flag him down every time we needed something. Never asked us if we wanted wine with dinner, getting water was an effort...If he was especially busy, he could have apologized or communicated that to us. Finally the manager stepped in but too late to make it much better. On the other hand, the food was excellent. Had the black bass and recommend it."

  • "Being new to the District, my wife and I discovered Poste trying to escape from the cold and wind a few weeks ago, came in though the old post-office courtyard, not even realizing that Poste was part of the Monaco Hotel. Had a fabulous old fashioned (i.e. wonderfully good and traditional) French Dinner. The 72 hour brazed "cow cheek bourguignon" was amazing. So I decided to take my wife to Poste for our 35th Wedding Anniversary. I arranged with the pastry chef to make us a special cake with white frosting, red hearts all over, and white-cake with lemon custard filling: it arrived following our excellent entrees, and was perfect. My wife (and she's a serious and wonderful cook) said that the lemon custard filling was simply "the best!""

  • "We arrived a too early according to the host. Because the restaurant was so busy, they couldn't seat us. At the host's recommendation, we went to the bar and ordered drinks. As soon as our drinks came, the host came to tell us our table was ready. Paid for the drinks &went to the host stand - where we waited for another 10 minutes while others were seated ahead of us. Our friendly server told us the vegetable crepes were "phenomenal". They were not. They were good. The burger was also good. The cookies we had for dessert were dry & not flavorful. Maybe they were too busy that night, but that doesn't account for the food. Spring &Summer is the best time to go to Poste, when the chef uses fresh vegetables."

  • "We stayed at The Monaco for a wkend so we experienced their dinner and their brunch. Dinner-Scallops were perfect as were the Brussels sprouts. Service impeccable. Brunch-Eggs Benedict almost as good as my own. Server noticed they were overlooked before I had a chance to notice. Took them away and brought them back perfect. I will come back time and time again. I was especially impressed with the hostesses and the wait staff. Always smiling and helpful."

  • "Another great dinner at Poste...thought it might be a challenge given a shortage of the Black Bass, and the need for a Gluten Free, non red meat meal for my Gluten Free spouse--the staff was excellent and pulled together a tuna bassed version of that menu item, which was outstanding.   • "I took my fiance here for this birthday after dining at (and enjoying) Poste several times myself. The entrees and service left us disappointed. We were asked to wait even though we had a reservation and there were many empty but dirty tables within our view. We had a bottle of wine. The server was pleasant and knowledgeable about the wine list. She is the sole reason I gave service two stars. Oysters and Vol au Vent: The richness of the vol au vent and freshness of the oysters earned two stars. Entrees: Root Vegetable Crepes and NY Strip- The steak arrived much later than the crepes. It was chewy and flavorless. The crepes had an overpowering nutmeg taste with each burned and black. The mashed potatoes tasted strongly of horseradish."

  • "I ate there several times while at the hotel. Their mixed drinks are dynamite. The first night I had the chef's fish special which was phenomenal. The apple dessert was good but very small. The next morning I had eggs benedict which was nothing special and the potatoes were over seasoned with onion. They did not complement the meal. Another day I had the spinach and cheese omelet which was fantastic. The cheese was a creamy white cheese that really complemented the vegetables in the omelet. However, they served it with a green salad (salad with spinach?) The peanut butter cup dessert tasted exactly like sweetened peanut butter with chocolate syrup on top in a pie shell. It was disappointing and too simple."

  • "Poste is a nice place to eat - OK service, good food, terrific setting, but…it leaves you felling like you could have been to one of several restaurants who follow the template of OK food served with that "flair" that seems so common today (small portions, somewhat pricey, general average flavor). Because there are so many nice restaurants in DC now, Poste is one where I would consider going back to only if I had eaten at many others. My wife and I went for Valentine's Day and paid $85 per person for a generally OK dinner - you get my drift I think - you won't walk away hating it, but you will probably think I have had this meal before somewhere, leading to thinking why would I come back..."
