Portola Kitchen is a place to gather with family and friends to enjoy the simplicity of rustic Italian-American cooking. Bringing you authentic cuisine, we use locally grown ingredients whenever possible, make our pasta in-house, and give our support to near-by wineries.

We believe the purity of our concept lies in the quality of our ingredients and the simplicity of our dishes. We are dedicated to bringing simple yet refined Italian-American cooking to our neighborhood and look forward to serving you and our community.

Along with our seasonal menu, we offer a full bar and a unique selection of California and Italian wines. Our menus are constantly changing, so the options for Dinner, Lunch and Brunch are endless. We also have a menu just for the kids.

  • "Dinner was really very good. The pasta with kale pesto was outstanding, as was the osso-buco and the duck sausage. Appetizers were good too. Service seemed frantic and yet it was very hard to catch the attention of the waiters, so service was spotty. At times really attentive and excellent, and at times frustrating (e.g., trying to get more water). And as with so many places lately, some sound buffering would be a great idea. In general, I'd like to go back. The food is worth the return visit. And of note, the manager was very nice, coming around at the end of dinner, making sure there was fresh coffee and asking how our evening went. That gains plusses in my book as well."

  • "We were satisfied with the food served. On a very busy weekend, our orders were taken in a reasonable time. The only problem encountered was that the bill was very slow in coming at the end of the meal. As people were waiting for a table, we were surprised that the staff didn't seem to be in any hurry to turn our table around. Our server more or less disappeared for about 25 minutes. I finally had to take our bill and credit card to the cashier myself. Nonetheless, we would return in the future."

  • "I have had lunch there twice. It was recommended to me as a "foodie" place. The food was either pedestrian or delicious/original. The shrimp louie salad and the cobb salad were simple, nothing remarkable. You can get similar anywhere, and I have had better. On the other hand, the Lamache gnocchi were incredible and the poached pear appetizer with bur rata was delicious and original. The chocolate boudin cake was wonderful also. One bad note, I was told that the brussels sprouts side was wonderful. It was awful, tasted of horseradish, inedible, and was served without the lemon and ricotta that the menu promised. I will go back and take friends, because of the wonderful items we had."

  • "Love this place for lunch. Service was way off for brunch: husband's drink was late, food was super slow and the side we ordered didn't come as listed. Willing to take a risk on Brussels sprouts eggs Benedict even though it ended up weird. Announced our Open Table reservation but it didn't get recorded so I got the stupid email from open table."

  • "Each time I go to Portola Kitchen, I find lots of interesting things on the menu. And each time, go away slightly disappointed. I had the Veal Parm this time and there was inexplicably a very spicy addition to (I think) the farro. My wife had a kale pasta that looked good, but the sausage was painfully spicy. We like spicy food, but this was spice in completely the wrong places. Like line cooks randomly adding things to dishes."

  • "I loved the ambience in the restaurant. It felt warm and welcoming, with delicious flavorful food. The staff was excellent, personable and attentive. I enjoyed the seating, it was comfortable and private, allowing us to chat at ease. The unique thing about this restaurant is that it had a cool, relaxed atmosphere with caring staff and great food!! I ordered the Kale & Shelling Bean Minestra soup, which was fresh and flavorful with the right balance of tomato, bean and kale and the pecorino romano cheese brought out the flavors very well. The fries had a wonderful tomato aioli dip that I loved and the pizza base was very tasteful and crisp. The dessert, which was the Valrhona Chocolate “Budino” was simply delicious and decadent."

  • "Our party of 4 all ordered veal piccata. The veal slices were all overcooked and burned on one side. Each plate had varying amounts of both a red sauce and a brown sauce. Both sauces were overpowering and completely disguised whatever taste remained with the veal which could have been cardboard for all we could tell. Pickled cauliflower and tasteless runny polenta accompanied the veal. I have been served much more appealing food in institutional cafeterias. This was our third and last try our local neighborhood restaurant. Our other two meals were spaced 3 to 6 months apart and were also disappointing. They were not as bad as this last one, however."

  • "We ordered cocktails which were good. That was it for almost an hour. The wine we ordered was out, so we selected another. But the second course didn't come for an hour. I was able to catch the waiter once, and he apologized, saying that 4 people were out and he would make sure to comp us for our inconvenience. When it finally came, it was a plain pizza and then dumped spinach leaves and prosciutto on it. It was the blandest pizza we ever had. About 15 minutes later our main courses came and we were again told we'd be compensated The bill included the wine which they were out of, as well as its replacement. By that time we just wanted to leave, and did not remind them of the promised compensation. We won't be back."

  • "The atmosphere is rustic contemporary, a little noisy but a fun spot for a date night. We were excited to find a spot like this on the peninsula because the options do seem sort of limited given the proximity to Silicon Valley. The food was very good except for our Skirt Steak. We specifically asked the waiter about the texture of it to which he replied "It's much better than our older version." That should've been a red flag and dragged down the overall impression of the food. Don't serve a main entree that is notoriously a challenging piece of meat unless you plan to master the preparation!"

  • "Since the founding Chef left we've dined twice at Portola Kitchen and both time have been less than satisfied. This last time I had the Torchio pasta with slow cooked beef and horseradish cream. No horseradish flavor as far as I could tell and the meat was under salted and lacking flavor not to mention the dish was poorly plated. My wife's roast chicken breast had been cooked over long, timing is the key to a chicken breast and somebody in the kitchen missed on this one. My Caesar Salad with extra Anchovies was quite good. Mike needs to get the kitchen working at the same level as it was under the original Chef if he wants the current concept to work, otherwise it's easy to drive to Mayfield, Parkside grill or eat at Los Amigos."

  • "How nice to finally have an excuse to visit beautiful Portola Valley. Visiting a friend in Portola Valley we stumbled on this neighborhood mall and this delightful restaurant. We would have driven right by and down the hill, back to all of the places we already know in Palo Atlo, but for it being on Open Table. Lucky us! We had a great lunch and a peek into this rarely visited (by us) area. We were intrigued and satiated, and will return just for a meal, despite not needing to be in the area. A meal here and you'll be looking for a home nearby. This is clearly where neighbors come to celebrate, visit and just have a nice meal. We're looking forward to trying more of the meals on their interesting menu."

  • "Just finished another great meal at Portola Kitchen. This is the fourth time and each time has been such a treat. The Tangerine and dandelion salad with ricotta salata was out of this world. A taste combination that I have never had before but thoroughly enjoyed. My daughter enjoyed the pumpkin and pear agnolotti which far exceeded her expectations for a vegetarian offering. The appetizers were so tasty we had to restrain ourselves. My entree was very good. Our server provided just the right mix of attention and service. The ambiance at PK is warm and inviting and the noise level was not bad at all, quite intimate. Strong wine list and fun beautiful and vibrant bar."

  • "Great local place my friend has raved about for months now. His reasons - neighborhood, comfortable, creative, friendly, charming - I understand all of them now. I finally went and enjoyed every interaction with their staff and morsel of my meal. The seasonal fruit plate is not only beautiful but full of unexpected flavors and experiences - chocolate persimmon, finger limes and pomegranate - YUM! My dining companions started with a simple and lovely salad. For dinner they dined on Osso Buco and a burger, and finished both! I can't say enough good things about my duck sausage with fig, the combination of those flavors was perfection for me. The service was attentive and friendly, without being overbearing. We will definitely be back!"

  • "This restaurant acquired a new chef which I'm open to, however, if you're a risk taken go for it; otherwise, turn around and walk-out. For examples, the pork osso bocco was very good the veal scaloppini was tough and had a gamey taste it was terrible. I can't remember when I've had such a awful entrée."

  • "PV Kitchen is a good local spot. We both had the beet & arugula salad and the veal scaloppine as an entree. We ordered small salads that to us we're actually larges but no complaint there. The veal, served with grilled veggies and polenta was flat on taste but a little salt brought out the flavors we were looking for. Service was a little on the slow side but the wait staff was very attentive as well as apologetic, and that goes a long way with us. We're looking forward to going back."

  • "When the first course arrived: tuna crudo, we knew something was amiss. Presentation just wasn't what it usually was. No subteley. Salad was much the same. The always wonderful sole had a new preparation which was dry and uninteresting. The problem: the wonderful chef, Guillone, who put the place on the map has left. We won't return and we be many others won't either."
