A word from Portofino Cucina Italiana
Portofino Cucina Italiana brings the spirit of Italian gourmet culture to Los Angeles. Just like the city it is named after, Portofino blends tradition and simplicity to make you feel at home the second you walk through our door.

Inside you’ll find a selection of Italian dishes and amazing Italian wines, some of which are difficult to find in the U.S. For me the spirit of Italian hospitality means taking the invaluable traditions and taste of my hometown and sharing them with you through elegance and authenticity.Continued

  • "We purchased a groupon deal for $49 which came with a 4 course meal and 2 glasses of champagne. Caesar salad: crisp lettuce, mild dressing, and sharp asiago cheese. Calamari: This definitely tasted fresh - none of the pieces were chewy and it was nicely breaded. Mushroom ravioli in a marsala sauce: The sauce was DELICIOUS - my favorite part. Chicken Ripieno - The sauce was nice and the fillings were good but the chicken was a little dry. Tiramisu: Super moist and delicious and complimented the champagne well. Overall, the food was great and the service was on point. We were given clean plates as soon as we finished each course. I would definitely recommend this place - especially if you can get a voucher!"

  • "Almost all the food we had in our 5-course groupon deal was delicious. It was served family style so we got to try a lot of items. The swordfish entree was amazing, but you might as well skip the bruschetta. The pasta was delicious, so was the cheese, but no need to get he tortellini - try something different. If this restaurant can get a few more people in its doors, it has the ability to catch on."

  • "FRI NIGHT WE TOOK ADVANTAGE OF A GROUPON SPECIAL TASTING FOR A FAMILY OF 4. WE ARE NOT STRANGERS TO THE HELP STAFF AND THEY WERE BUSY WHEN WE ARRIVED FOR OUR 7:30 RES HOWEVER WE WAITED 15 MIN FOR THE BALANCE OF OUR PARTTY TO ARRIVE. WE ORDERED A GOOD BOTTLE OF WINE AND THEN PROCEEDED TO EAT THE FIRST SALAD COURSE...AND THEN WAITED AT LEAST 20 MIN IF NOT LONGER FOR THE 2ND. COURSE TO ARRIVE. WE THINK THEY FORGOT US IN PLAIN SIGHT. MY HUSBAND COMPLAINED LOUDLY AND THE REST PROCEDED. FIRST TIME THE LAG HAPPENED."

  • "We had an hour for lunch and they got us in and out within the hour while attending to us throughout the meal. Bolognese sauce was amazing! I had it over the gnocchi. Also, the truffle fries were crispy and tasty!"

  • "I encourage diners to try the Tasting Menu for two at Portofino Cucina Italiana. The Tasting Menu is served "family style," which means each course (salad, appetizer, pasta, entree, dessert) is shared by the parties. Champagne is served at the end of the meal. My wife and I went to Portofino Cucina Italiana for Mother's Day dinner this Sunday. Although we made reservations, the restaurant was not busy when we arrived. Some may take this as a bad sign of poor quality of food or service (or both), but my wife and I had a wonderful dining experience. From the Tasting Menu, my wife and I had the baby beets salad, calamari, tortellini vodka, seafood stew, and affogato de caffe. The service was wonderful to boot. We will definitely be back!"

  • "They had yummy gluten free pasta as well as other gluten free options! Great menu, wonderful server. Very accommodating to my other food sensitivities. Great wine reasonably priced. "

  • "Went to this restaurant on a Saturday night (4/12/2014) and according to the waiter filling in as host, the restaurant was only missing one server which should never severely impact any establishment. This restaurant is small and on this particular night, relatively empty, so the lack of service was unreasonable. It took 10 min to get water and a menu, 12 min to place our order and a long wait for our dinner. The food was well below expectations for an OpenTable referral. The pasta was undercooked! Not al dente, UNDERCOOKED!! The sauce was bland. The waiter/host explained the food is prepared by the chef/owner which was more disappointing because I would expect him to take more pride in his business and product. WILL NEVER EAT HERE AGAIN!"

  • "We enjoyed our evening here. A quiet Monday early evening so we were the only couple besides one other gentleman. The service was excellent and the food was great. the bruschetta was awesome..... I could have had that with the yummy caesar salad a glass of wine and done. The steak was huge and just a little under cooked but that was a thick piece of beef! The truffle fries were tasty. A little less cooked would have been my preference but they were very nice. The desert was de-lish along with a glass of champagne. Over all it was a very pleasant nice. We would definitely go back maybe on a Friday or Saturday night with more people."

  • "Portofino has a 3 course dinner special for $19.95 that includes a starter, main course and dessert...almost too much food! The staff could not be nicer. They do need to refresh the look. It is old-fashioned, not "hip"."

  • "We tried this downtown L.A. restaurant because of a Groupon. Overall, the food was of a very high quality and well-prepared. The beet salad was fresh and dressed perfectly, and the fillet carpaccio flavorful. A standout was the penne alla Genovese. The sauce was so savory, we would have licked the plate if we'd been in private, and the pasta was perfectly al dente. The only disappointment was the NY steak. While very flavorful, part of the cut was so gristly as to be inedible. The meal finished off with a wonderful trio of crispy, creamy cannoli. We look forward to returning and ordering off the regular menu."

  • "We had a great time! It was quiet, probably because we went on a wednesday, but the ambience was nice. They even offered a child portion for my son!"

  • "Everything was good except the dessert was horrible. Tasted like they were pre made frozen possibly?"

  • "We found the restaurant through Groupon and enjoyed the food and waitstaff very much. We were close to a rather noisy group but we managed to still have a good dinner and conversation between ourselves, The food itself was a very nice surprise all of courses were prepared very well and delicious. We will be back."

  • "We ate here because we had a Groupon for the Chef's tasting menu. It sounded great, but totally wasn't. The food was so-so. Certain things were hard to chew, didn't taste right, or too cold. Plus the "champagne" was a sweet prosecco. Further, each course came out when we were still eating the one that came before it, after we had specifically asked them twice to wait a while before bringing the next course out. Very disorganized, and food wasn't good. DEFINITELY NOT GOING BACK THERE, EVER."

  • "Due to some online review, I didn't expect much service wise. However, the service (including the hostess, waiter, server, and bus boys) all provide very attentive service. In addition, the food was excellent and are very authentic Italian home cooking. Worth the drive to downtown LA. Just park nearby, the area is not the most desirable."

  • "Service was attentive (let me go home w/ a fresh piece of bread).Salad was slightly overdressed and chicken was slightly overdone, but nothing that I would put up a fight over. Get a window seat to watch all the local hipsters walking their dogs."

  • "Unfortunately, this place sits on the corner of a block downtown that goes dark at night and can be a little intimidating for those not comfortable with the area. Plus, the windows are primarily frosted over, so it can be difficult to see inside. But the place was terrific for a date night dinner. Extremely warm, welcoming, helpful staff and very good food. We had the carpaccio (lovely), split the spinach salad (excellent dressing with the just the right amount of goodies), and the NY steak (perfectly prepared) and brand-new-on-the-menu cod fillet (very light, well prepared). Definitely recommended for a great dinner out with friends and/or loved ones."

  • "The food WAS pretty good. It is a shame the waiter was no where to be found all evening. Our reservation was at 7:00 and we were not able to leave until 10:00. When we walked it it smelt weird. After waiting with water and bread (no butter for 15 min), we finally had to ask the bus boy to get us a waiter. The waiter finally came and took the order, he never showed up without us having to ask for him again. Even the bill we has to ask for. We will not be going back even though the food was very good."

  • "The food was good, but there was a lack a lack in the service which was very slow even if they were nice. Didn't like the ambiance of the restaurant."

  • "My family and I tried a chef's tasting. We tried several different dishes. They were all delicious. I will definitely come back."

  • "Mains were good, though I could tell my broccoli was obviously microwaved as it had warm and old spots."
    Dined on 11/15/2013
  • "The service here was, hands down, the best. Because we used a Living Social deal, our dinner was family style. However, the servers brought each course and plated our food for us at the table. The food was good. The only less desirable aspect was the location at night-- that part of downtown is pretty empty. However, it was worth the trip."

  • "Love their pastas. We did a family tasting menu, and there was plenty to share."
    Dined on 10/27/2013
  • "It was exactly what I was looking for, really a fine place for a date. The only thing that I didn't like was simply the area that the place was in; it was a little off color. Still, I enjoyed, my date enjoyed it, and I'm pretty sure we'll go there again sometime."
    Dined on 10/14/2013
  • "The food was good and the drinks were as they are suppoed to be, but overall, nothing to write home about. The biggest negative was that the place had an underlying unpleasant odor that almost caused us to leave when we walked in."
    Dined on 10/4/2013
  • "Small portions, but good food. We had to order more dishes than expected because of their small portions. But overall, all the numerous plates that we ordered were consistently solid and well prepared. Our waiter was also very approachable and nice."

  • "Need I say more? Our dog child sits it out in a gated patio while we dine with candle light. Love their Caesar salad and mushroom risotto- my husband enjoys their speghetti and meat balls. They are nice people."

  • "To start things off. When I arrived with my date, I was told that I did not have any reservations booked through open table. Odd, since I'm filling this out now. I offered to show the man my email receipt but he just acted as if he was doing me a favor. Order our food and wine. Portions are small compared to the price they charge. This isn't a five star fine dining establishment. I was here once before and it was completely different. They raised prices by half or more and killed the portions. Would not recommend after how I was treated."

  • "What a great place for lunch if you work in DTLA or happen to be in DTLA. Little Italian joint with scrumptious food. This place was great because the simple, good food matched the prices. Absolutely delicious tortellini with pink sauce with a light salad. Their Panini’s are yummy too. Our server was very attentive and friendly. Two thumbs up for sure!"

  • "I was not impressed by this restaurant. The $8 pizzas are microscopic, you need 3 for a mean, the gnocchi get badly dissolved in the mouth, the coffee is like (or a bit worse than) Starbucks."

  • "We were a group of four. Made a lunch reservation, which was not needed -- pretty empty. The guy at the reception desk ignored us because he was too busy on the phone. Message to manager: Train your front desk staff that they should never ignore guests. It's the first impression, and it said "we don't much care." Food was fine if unspectacular."

  • "I tried it because of the reviews. It took us a while but eventually found parking. The service is very good - the waiter is friendly. The food was good but not great but why should I complain, the prices are so reasonable. It was my first time there and the place has an old building smell - it's hard to describe... What I do want to complain about is the homeless people hanging out just outside shouting and making so much noise. There is nothing much the owners can do unless you want those homeless people start throwing rocks to the frosted glass which is the only thing keeping them away. A friend told me that I may have come at a bad day because normally, there are no homeless people but unfortunately, there was the time I was there."
