A word from Portobello Vegan Trattoria
Portobello works directly with several local farms to prepare an organic produce-driven menu informed by the Mediterranean tradition, but still uniquely Northwest. In addition to our seasonal menu we feature housemade pasta and Neopolitan-inspired pizza, have a full bar with craft cocktails, and yes, everything is totally vegan.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "We had the pleasure of dining on a Sunday Family Style dinner. The food was fresh and delicious. It was a complete meal. We'll actually more like two meals. I liked the idea of family-style vegan. Unique. Definitely recommend."

  • "Everything on the menu is mouth watering ( and I am a picky eater, too). Delicate, light, flavorful food in which no animals were harmed - the food fills your heart and belly with joy. The prices are very affordable too. I would like to be a weekly regular here. Too bad they are not open for lunch. It's so popular, don't forget to make a reservation."

  • "We love this place! I've had some of the best food I've ever tasted here, and I love hat the menu is seasonal. The only negative thing is that seating is very slow. We always get reservations, but then there is always a big line at the door of people with and without reservations. The person checking people in needs to answer the phone, figure out if the people without reservations can get a table, seat people, bring them water...and it always ends up frustrating people. If that were streamlined, I think all customers would be much happier!"

  • "not a restaurant you can just go to on the fly...must plan ahead. totally worth it though! who knew vegan could taste so good! and the margaritas were to DIE FOR!!!! thanks! p"

  • "Great good, lots of variety on the menu. Excellent service! My new favorite place!"

  • "As a lover of great food and people who have a feel for making great food, this place really had it all. Their 5 course Sunday meal was a creative, delicious and surprising treat, and I am not vegan. Makes you forget it is even vegan. Food for new times. Way to go!!"

  • "The gnocci & Ravioli were great and the staff were equal in quality, casual, friendly and attentive. Sweet little spot with warm atmosphere and design."

  • "A wonderful place for vegans who love to eat, we tried several items on the menu and were very impressed with the flavors achieved without animal products. They have a full bar and nice wine list."

  • "Cozy & intimate atmosphere with amazing food! We tried the mushroom risotto (safe choice I know but we weren't disappointed) and "scallops" (wow!). I would recommend both options. For dessert we had the chocolate mousse... So good! We definitely plan to try the other menu options next time we visit Portland. Overall it was a great experience and the perk is that no one had to die for such an amazing and satisfying meal :)"

  • "The food was amazing, I would definitely return. The only thing I would point out was the length of time between courses. We were not in a rush so this did not bother us however our dinner in total took about two hours for three courses. This is longer than we are used to but like I mentioned, we were having a great time so it did not hinder our experience."

  • "Dined here before and the food is very good. Bear in mind this is strictly vegan preparation, so achieving a "very good" report is remarkable. The Dine Around menu was a good combination of a couple of items from the regular menu coupled with an excellent mousse desert. The dessert rates a gold star for wonderful blend of tastes and textures without being heavy. On the other hand, the one drawback to a vegan meal is that the portion sizes, although appropriate, are not filling. So if one has a medium size appetite, she will be looking to nosh on something within an hour or two. One other thought--the wine prices are a bit high. The pinot gris, although excellent, was $11, which is way out of line with the restaurant market."

  • "The food and service were outstanding at this vegan gem. We had Caulifower Steak, Portobello Steak and the Beet Tartare, all of which were flawlessly executed. I'd recommend this restaurant to anyone - it shows that there really are no sacrifices involved in eating a plant based diet. My only regret was not ordering everything on the menu. I guess that means we'll just need to come back and work our way through it! With a glass of wine and leaving absolutely stuffed, the tab was right around $50 for two, which is great value for money. And did I mention the Beet Tattare ? Move over Borscht, these are the Best Beets Ever!"

  • "Chose to try Portobello Vegan Trattoria during Portland's Dining Month. Will return. Vegans and omnivores both loved the dining month three course meal."

  • "Very good vegan food. A special place. We will return many times."

  • "Could use muuuuuuuuch larger portion sizes. A tablespoon of ice cream?!?!"

  • "Had a wonderful dining experience here. Tried the three course Portland Dining Month option, and all three courses were delightful and flavorful. There were so many other things on the menu that we wanted to try, so we'll have to go back again soon."

  • "The atmosphere is rustic and classically simple; the food is fantastic, particularly the artisan cheese plate to start; the service was friendly, and prompt without being overbearing. Would absolutely recommend to anyone."

  • "Not a vegan or a vegetarian myself, my vegan friend invited me to dinner. I checked out the menu online, and saw a larger variety of options than I had expected. Ordered an appetizer to share and separate entrees. The food was amazing! I am recommending this restaurant to everyone I know. A delicious, healthy meal in a Portland restaurant can be difficult to find. You'll find it here."

  • "The food here is Fabulous! Seriously...really, really good - I am a total food snob, and a former chef. Service is also great..."

  • "The food is creative, tasty, and fun. The Sweetie Peppers are fantastic. We fight over the last one. With two vegans and two near-vegetarians in the house, we can't go wrong at Portobello. That said, you definitely don't need to be a vegetarian to enjoy the food. I think even a meat eater would rate it a solid 4+stars if they gave Portobello a try."

  • "We've eaten here once before and it was great; this second time, with guests, was not good. On the plus side: Wonderful staff, very friendly and accommodating, couldn't be nicer. Very nice, comfortable ambience, inviting and cozy. GREAT cocktails! Lots of gluten-free options. A "Scallops" dish made from mushrooms that was AWESOME!! A great beet salad that was fresh and flavorful. On the minus side: They ran out of two of their main dishes early in the evening, by 7:00pm. It was a shame as they sounded like the best items on the menu, and would have been our 1st and 2nd choices. Except for the above mentioned Scallops & salad, our entries (portobello dishes) and Starters were mediocre: not bad, but bland and ordinary; I expected much better."

  • "We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food and how good it tasted. The mushroom fries are magical and must be tried."

  • "Portobello is a nice vegan restaurant in Portland with attentive, friendly service. Good for dates or special occasions. The brussel sprouts and portobello steak were favourites. The cheeses are definitely worth checking out too! For dessert, the rum baba is spot on."

  • "My husband and I went to Portobello's this time to celebrate our birthday (yes we both have the same birthday), and thanks to the newly expanded dining room, we were able to make a reservation less than a week beforehand with no restrictions. The food was delicious, as usual and vegan to boot! The beet tartare is TO DIE FOR! We get it every time. The sauce for the ravioli was very tasty and had a slight twist on an original. The tiramisu was so yummy you'd never know it's 100% plant based. This is the third time we've gone there for dinner and are never disappointed. :)"

  • "This was my first visit to Portobello and I already can't wait to go back. The food is amazing. Between two people, we had an app, drinks, two small plate entrees (generous smalls), dessert and delicious coffees and it came to a little over $50. Not bad at all for great quality. I also appreciated that they offer a few "mocktails", mixed drinks without alcohol, as I don't drink. A must visit vegan restaurant in Portland."

  • "I booked a table here for a birthday celebration. from the start our server didn't seem altogether there. She was very nice, but didn't seem well trained in serving. We got wrong dishes and some things we ordered never showed up or we had to remind her several times. It was also difficult to find her when we needed to replace wrong dishes. The food was fine, but not spectacular."

  • "This was a truly delicious veggie dining spot! All of the dishes we tried were exquisite! Such a lovely evening!"

  • "We had a fabulous dinner and enjoyed everything. After too many disappointing meals and menu changes, I had stayed away for quite a while. But I'm happy to say they back on track. Everything we ordered (appetizers, main courses and desert) was delicious. We both agreed to return."

  • "I am not a vegan or even a vegetarian, but Portobello's offerings are so good I would be tempted to become a vegan if I could eat this well every night."
    Dined on 2/26/2014
  • "This is one of the tastiest vegan meals we have ever had. It was Sunday night so the menu was a prix-fixe. It was the third Sunday of the month, so it was also gluten free. The soup, salad, polenta, everything were exceedingly delicious. We highly recommend to all foodies."

  • "I was really excited about trying Portobello, but came away underwhelmed. I felt like I was on an episode of Portlandia: slightly smug, self-satisfied host and wait staff didn't give the place a terribly welcoming feel, and the whole evening felt a little cold and impersonal. We were put at a table way in the back of the restaurant, literally two feet from the swinging door into the kitchen. The waiter was slow to do anything, ignored us and then rushed us when it came close to closing time. She came and asked if she could remove our plates when we were clearly still eating, and then asked if we needed boxes a minute later when we were STILL clearing still eating! All this after being ignored when we wanted to order."

  • "Food always wonderful at portobello. I love their pizza so much that my wife and I order it to go at least once a week."

  • "1. We were sat very close to another couple (about elbows length, I could have reached over and eaten out of their plates) when I specifically put in the notes that we prefer a more private setting. The restaurant over all is pretty small and people are seated fairly close to one another. 2. The decorations and ambiance where really cool. The wall art fits the area very well. 3. My wife ordered a beet salad and finished the whole thing in 3-4 bites. I ordered a pizza that was more decently sized but still way too expensive for what it came with. This place is way overpriced but it might be worth it to check it out at least once."

  • "This is the first place I would take a non-vegan to try vegan food. Pizzas, pastas, amazing cheese plates, it's my favorite restaurant in Portland. Service was a little slow and the drinks took a long time, the bartender seemed a but overwhelmed, but otherwise it's great."

  • "The food was really excellent and we enjoyed our time for the Valentine's 4-course meal. The staff was friendly. However, we were seated too close to the couple next to us; that was distracting and made conversation difficult. In addition, the portions were smaller than we anticipated. Overall it was a positive experience and we would return."
