Had our reservation and arrived on time. They put us in the smallest table they had and said "sorry, this is the only table we have available." We were cramped, pushed up against a window, and crowded in by another table. Will not return.

It is a cozy restaurant, with great food and service! We truly enjoyed it and the noise was not loud at all which was very pleasant. We've been several times and they never disappoint which is why we will come back again!

Decided upon this restaurant based on previous reviews and was not disappointed. Good choice for a first date. The pasta tasted fresh and the portion sizes were sensible, not too much nor too little. I didn't want to have to lug around food all night while being out on a first date. The restaurant setting was quiet and intimate, great for conversation.

This cozy restaurant, located in the West Village, was a great find. Very good service and the prices were not outrageous. The squid ink tagliatelle was especially enjoyable, as was the fried calamari which was light and not oily. If I lived in the neighborhood, I would be here at least once/week.

Excellent ambiance and service. Loved the music selection ... smart jazz that was just loud enough to create white noise between tables, yet allow easy conversation between those dining together.

  • You won't find better Italian in NY
    OpenTable Diner Since 2006
    Dined on 12/23/2011
The ultimate neighborhood Italian restaurant. Everything is as authentic as it gets. If you have ANY memory at all of eating a genuine Italian meal in a real Italian home, whether or not it was your own, this great restaurant will evoke that memory and make new memories for you. Let's face it, there are a LOT of really fine Italian restaurants in NYC. More than most cities. So, this is hard-earned praise - Portobello TRULY stands out from the rest. I've never been to an "Olive Garden," but it seems to me that this is what "Olive Garden" is trying to emulate in a sort of mechanical, mediocre way. But this is the real goods. Don't miss a chance to have an affordable, authentic and outrageously DELICIOUS meal at this Greenwich Village gem.

This was a very nice place to find in the village. We were late because of traffic but the owner was very accommodating. The special pasta of squid ink linguini with fresh calamari was very nicely prepared. The owner was attentive - checking to make sure we were enjoying our dinner while circulating the room. The room was open to the street and seemed like a nice feel of Tuscany in NYC. We will be back!

  • Awesome Italian food @ Portobello!

It was a gem find for Italian food. The food were delicious. We had crab & shrimp cakes for starter, filled with genuine crab meat that I even tasted a bit of shell. The portions were large, I could've just dine on them alone, yummm. Nonetheless, I had Ragatoni alla Francesco for entree and my friend had salmon; they were both equally delicious that we cleaned out plates. Simply and elegantly prepared that brought out the natural ingredients' taste. Services were quick and professional. Overall, it was a very pleasant experience at Portobello Restaurant and I highly recommend it to others. We'll definitely return when we're craving for Italian food or when in the Soho neighborhood.

I loved this restaurant, The atmosphere was great and the service, staff and food were absolutely amazing. They were very helpful and service was the most prompt and friendly I have seen in a long time. I can't wait to go back. The Frank Sinatra playing in the background made the experience so great for me..Thanks for the wonderful evening. Keep up the good work Portobello.

Showed up and there was no table available even though we were on time for our reservation. The restaurant was expecting a party of 18 people or so. Another couple walked into the restaurant after us, and one of the servers went into the basement, got a table, brought it up, set it up and let them sit down while we stood there waiting. Strange. I have no idea how the food is because we left. We live in the neighborhood but we will not be going back. There are a lot of restaurants in the Village, so we don't need to go to a place where they treat us rudely.
